German automaker <keyword id="6361865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Volkswagen" source="Orion">Volkswagen</keyword> will kick off its electrification journey in India with the launch of its electric car ID.4 later this year as part of its global efforts of mass electrification, a senior company official said on Thursday. The company, which unveiled the ID.4, expects the Indian passenger vehicles market to grow 5-7 per cent this year while it is targeting 10-15 per cent growth for itself. <br /><br /> "Our first step to the electrification journey in India begins with the ID.4...," Executive Director Sales International Operations, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Michael Mayer said here at the Volkswagen annual brand conference. <br /><br /> He said the ID.4 is being brought in as part of the company's global efforts of mass electrification. <br /><br /> It will be launched in the Indian market later this year. <br /><br /> Globally, VW is leading in the electrification journey, he said, adding, as part of the company's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement 2030, it is continuing efforts in various spheres, including the development of charging infrastructure that's key to acceptance of EVs, recycling of batteries, digitalisation and connectivity solutions. <br /><br /> The company is offering different products from ID.2 to ID.Buzz globally targeting several segments of customers, Mayer said, adding that globally, VW's electric vehicle (EV) sales grew 21 per cent at around 4 lakh units in 2023. <br /><br /> "This is not the end of the story. It is our goal to take this success to other markets," Mayer said. <br /><br /> However, he added, "This would be a phased approach, wherein we will strengthen our current portfolio on the basis of brand positioning for the market." <br /><br /> "India, needless to say, continues to be a key market for Volkswagen. But can it match the hype of VW's last big reveal: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-id-buzz-volkswagen-electric-bus-minivan-2024-interior-2022-4">the ID.Buzz minivan</a>?</p><p>That model caused quite the, ahem, buzz when it made its debut in 2022 as a battery-powered reimagination of VW's iconic bus. It's unclear whether Volkswagen's next car will make as big a splash, mostly because Volkswagen has given little indication about what it'll be. </p><p>VW has only said that it'll reveal a camouflaged version of <a href="https://media.vw.com/en-us/releases/1722">"the newest member of its all-electric family"</a> and also announce what the model will be called. </p><div type="image" title="The Volkswagen ID.Aero show car." height="1194" width="1795" msid="96720133" hostid="261" sizebytes="70552"></div><p>But we can make a guess as to what Volkswagen has in store. </p><p>Last summer, <a href="https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/volkswagens-first-fully-electric-sedan-world-premiere-of-the-id-aero-8031">the brand revealed the ID.Aero show car</a>, a concept version of its first fully electric sedan. Volkswagen is set to reveal its next electric car at CES — here's what we know so far

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="14314752" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="herbert-diess" source="Orion">Herbert Diess</keyword> has been ousted as <keyword id="12153707" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="volkswagen" source="Orion">Volkswagen</keyword>'s chief executive three years before his contract ended.</li><li>He had often clashed with the powerful council representing workers, per the Financial Times.</li></ul><p>Volkswagen's chief executive Herbert Diess has been ousted after little more than four years in the role and three years before the end of his contract.</p><p>He was the architect of the German carmaker's multibillion-dollar push into electric vehicles and wanted to overtake <keyword id="11900744" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> as the world's number one electric car producer.</p><p>Diess will be replaced in September by Oliver Blume, the chief executive of Porsche, which is part of the VW Group.</p><p><a href="https://www.ft.com/content/f73ee239-8c2a-4344-b042-2d78c646506b">The Financial Times reported</a> that Diess had often clashed with the company's works council, which represents workers and accounts for half the seats on its board.</p><p>Daniela Cavallo, who leads the council, said it wanted to ensure that "job security and profitability remain equally important corporate goals in the coming years. Our focus as an employee organization is clear: all our colleagues must be involved. Today's decisions pay tribute to this."</p><p>Diess had privately said VW had an excess of about 30,000 staff, The FT reported.</p><p>Earlier this year, the group released the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-id-buzz-volkswagen-electric-bus-minivan-2024-interior-2022-4">ID.Buzz, an electric version of its iconic Microbus</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/volkswagen-electric-pickup-truck-f150-chevrolet-2022-4">Insider reported</a> that it could launch an electric pickup truck to rival Ford's F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet's Silverado EV in the US.</p><div type="image" title="Volkswagen ID.Buzz." height="1406" width="1874" msid="93076673" hostid="261" sizebytes="189278"></div><p><keyword id="11897862" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword> has acknowledged the company's achievements and told <a href="https://www.ft.com/video/1bf5c3d6-fdf1-4a24-975e-c58aa5bb0d1a">The FT</a> in May that Volkswagen had made the most progress with EVs other than Tesla.</p><p>Last month Diess told workers at the company's Wolfsburg headquarters: "Elon must simultaneously ramp up two highly complex factories in Austin and Grünheide [near Berlin] — and expand production in Shanghai. That will cost him strength. We have to seize this opportunity and catch up quickly — by 2025 we can be in the lead."</p><p><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/company/press/volkswagen-to-overtake-teslas-battery-electric-vehicle-sales-crown-by-2024-finds-bloomberg-intelligence/">A study by Bloomberg Intelligence</a> expects VW to double production to more than 2 million battery-powered vehicles by 2024, overtaking Tesla, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-will-lose-crown-biggest-electric-car-maker-2024-study-2022-6">Insider reported last month</a>.</p><p>Volkswagen aims to produce about 700,000 electric car this year, but is about half the number Tesla expects to make. </p><p>In Europe, however, the German company has about double Tesla's market share in EVs.</p><p>Hans Dieter Pötsch, the chairman of Volkswagen Group, said of Diess: "Not only did he steer the company through extremely turbulent waters, but he also implemented a fundamentally new strategy."</p><p>Blume, who will continue to run Porsche as well, joined VW in 1994 and held management roles at its Audi, SEAT and Volkswagen divisions before moving to Porsche. Diess is a rare outsider and joined from BMW in 2015.</p>

The boss who wanted Europe's biggest car maker to overtake Tesla in the EV race is pushed out the door

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12153707" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="volkswagen" source="Orion">Volkswagen</keyword> could bring an <keyword id="12025775" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-pickup-truck" source="Orion">electric pickup truck</keyword> to the US market. </li><li>VW of America CEO Scott Keogh said the idea presents "the chance of a lifetime."</li></ul><p>Volkswagen could launch an electric pickup truck to rival Ford's F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet's Silverado EV in the US — if the brand's North America chief gets his way. </p><p>In an interview, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Scott Keogh said he sees a battery-powered truck as a huge opportunity for the German brand to stake its flag in the hot American pickup market. </p><p>"I think it's the chance of a lifetime in this segment because electrification gives you a reset moment. It gives you a chance to bring some, let's say, alternatives and some new ideas into this great segment," said Keogh, who oversees Volkswagen's operations in the US, Mexico, and Canada.</p><p>"It's something we're actively looking at, but nothing to actually report now."</p><p>Excitement around new compact pickup trucks like Ford's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-maverick-truck-hybrid-review-price-mpg-hyundai-santa-cruz-2022-1">Maverick</a> and electric models like the F-150 Lightning proves there's an opportunity for Volkswagen to introduce its own battery-powered contender, Keogh said. The brand already sells a gas pickup outside of the US. </p><p>A few major players — Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, through its Ram brand — have historically dominated US pickup sales, but electrification levels the playing field, Keogh said. In the nascent electric-pickup segment, everyone faces roughly the same challenges when it comes to scaling up production, he said. </p><p>Keogh also reckons that new electric options could shake up deeply ingrained consumer preferences and brand loyalties.</p><p>"I think a buyer would historically say, 'I buy F-150, I buy Ram, I buy Silverado.' Now they might be saying, 'I'm going to buy an electric one,'" he said. "That reset moment gives a competitive chance to come in, whether it's Rivian or whether it's us."</p><p>If it ever sees the light of day, Volkswagen's pickup would compete against an increasingly crowded field of electric trucks. Ford's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-electric-f150-lightning-truck-production-doubled-amid-demand-2022-1">F-150 Lightning</a> goes into production this month, while Chevrolet's Silverado EV is set to launch next year. On the pricier end of the spectrum, GMC and Rivian, a California startup, have already started deliveries of their upscale models. </p><p>As automakers around the globe embrace battery power, the Volkswagen Group, which sells vehicles in the US under the Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Bugatti brands, is pouring billions of dollars into efforts to develop and manufacture electric models. By 2030, the Volkswagen brand <a href="https://media.vw.com/en-us/releases/1668">aims</a> for 55% of its US sales to be electric, aided by its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/volkswagen-vw-id4-awd-affordable-electric-crossover-suv-review-2021-12">ID.4 crossover</a>, upcoming <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-id-buzz-electric-volkswagen-bus-camper-rv-2022-3">ID.Buzz van</a>, and future SUVs.</p>

Volkswagen of America CEO says an electric pickup truck represents 'the chance of a lifetime'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Of the over 700,000 EVs sold in the US in 2022, none could be fully accessible to wheelchair users.</li><li>EV batteries' are under the floor, which is a challenge for making the cars accessible.</li></ul><p>Electrification has been center stage of any car conversation lately, and sales of electric vehicles have<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicles-accounted-global-auto-sales-could-quadruple-2030-report-2023-1"> increased</a> significantly. And yet, if a wheelchair user in the US wants to be part of the trend and buy a fully accessible EV for personal use, they won't be able to find it. </p><p>The EV industry, despite its speedy development, is still young and it hasn't produced enough car models to cater to every need. More specifically it comes down to size and money. </p><p>"Inches mean miles when you're in a wheelchair," Kevin Frayne, director of advanced mobility solutions at <a href="https://www.braunability.com/us/en.html">BraunAbility</a>, a manufacturer that converts cars to make them accessible to wheelchair users, told Insider. </p><p>To be fully accessible to wheelchair users, a car needs to have floor space that allows maneuvering, a large door opening, and a ramp on the side to facilitate getting into the car. That's why minivans are usually the platform of choice.</p><p>Full-size vans, given their size, could also do the trick. "But what users want is normalcy in the driveway," Frayne noted. "They don't want something gargantuan that doesn't fit in their garage." </p><p>Electric minivans for personal use are not a thing in the US yet. Volkswagen's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-id-buzz-volkswagen-electric-bus-minivan-2024-interior-2022-4">ID.Buzz</a>, which has already launched in Europe with a short wheelbase, is expected to launch with a long wheelbase in the US in 2024. And even that one, according to Frayne, is not as big as he would like. </p><p>EVs present another tricky challenge. To make vehicles accessible, manufacturers like BraunAbility often both raise the roofs of the cars, and redesign the floor structure, to lower it and install ramps. "And where are the batteries in EVs?" Frayne jokingly asked, "They're under the floor!" </p><h2><strong>A price problem </strong></h2><p>With time, engineers will likely solve the batteries' challenge, but another problem is that, as cute as the ID.Buzz is, it's likely not going to be that cheap. </p><p>On average, electric cars are still <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-vs-gas-cost-charging-loan-maintenance-study-2022-5">more expensive</a> than gas cars. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-prices-electric-vehicles-elon-musk-supply-chain-model-x-2022-6">Tesla Model X</a>, which is one of the largest EVs on the market, has a starting price of over $100,000, which would come <em>before </em>the conversion price, which can range in between $15,000 and $30,000, according to Frayne. </p><p>"Disability and poverty often go hand in hand. Some people say that disability is both a cause and consequence of poverty," Maria Town, president and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities, told Insider. "People with disabilities are going to be less likely to be able to purchase an EV until the prices for these vehicles come down." </p><h2><strong>Charging infrastructure </strong></h2><p>Once made accessible, EVs could benefit wheelchair users greatly. </p><p>Being able to charge your vehicle in your own home, for instance, could save a wheelchair user a trip to the gas pump, which is often difficult to navigate, not to mention that electrification goes hand in hand with automation, and autonomous vehicles "could really be an equalizer for disabled people," as Town pointed out. </p><p>But charging infrastructure also has to be built with accessibility in mind, Town said. </p><p>"EV infrastructure in many ways is being retrofitted onto our existing fuel-based automotive infrastructure," Town said. "Disabled people know better than most that retrofitting often leaves a lot to be desired. Have you ever been in an older building that's been retrofitted with air conditioning and you're like, ah, this doesn't work all that well?" </p><p>Last year, the US Access Board, released a technical <a href="https://www.access-board.gov/tad/ev/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">document</a> with design recommendations for accessible electric vehicle charging stations across the country, and automaker Ford announced it has developed a <a href="https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2022/07/20/ford-trials-robot-charging-station-designed-to-give-disabled-dri.html#:~:text=Now%2C%20Ford%20has%20developed%20a,from%20inside%20their%20electric%20vehicle.&amp;text=The%20technology%20could%20enable%20disabled,robot%20does%20all%20the%20work." target="_blank" rel="noopener">prototype robot </a>charging station that drivers can operate via their smartphone. </p><h2><strong>'Let's not make accessibility an afterthought' </strong></h2><p>The challenges of making EVs accessible are nothing that the industry has not faced before, according to Frayne. </p><p>"We've been working on it for a couple years already," Frayne said, "And electrification is not gonna be a switch that's thrown overnight." </p><p>But, "let's not make accessibility an afterthought," he added. </p><p>For now, a good transition car that can be made accessible is the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-hybrid-toyota-sienna-takes-on-honda-odyssey-chrysler-pacifica-2020-5">Toyota Sienna</a>, a hybrid. </p>

Electric cars could be a gamechanger for wheelchair users, but there aren't any for them on the market &mdash; here's why

The truck starts at $39,900 for the most basic Work Truck model. The RST First Edition, which hits the market later in 2023, starts at $105,000. </p><div type="image" title="The Chevrolet Silverado EV." height="1875" width="2500" msid="90943580" hostid="261"></div><p>The star of the show was the Silverado EV's ingenious bed, which features a large pass-through to the cab, allowing people to haul objects that are almost 11 feet long. </p><h2><strong>Deus Vayanne</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Deus Vayanne." height="1640" width="2187" msid="90943582" hostid="261"></div><p>Austria-based EV startup Deus debuted a "production-oriented concept" of its inaugural model, the Vayanne. The company claims its supercar will put out a positively outrageous 2,200 horsepower and 1,475 pound-feet of torque. For comparison, the $3.3 million Bugatti Chiron <em>only </em>offers 1,500 horses or so. </p><div type="image" title="The Deus Vayanne." height="1875" width="2500" msid="90943584" hostid="261"></div><p>The Vayanne, according to Deus, will have a top speed of 248 mph and can hit 60 mph in less than two seconds. </p><p>Impossibly low to the ground and sculpted, the Vayanne also looks the part. Deus says its rear is inspired by the infinity symbol. The Deus Vayanne is limited to 99 examples, and deliveries are set to begin in 2025. </p><h2><strong>Kia EV9 concept</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The Kia EV9." height="1370" width="1827" msid="90943585" hostid="261"></div><p>Kia took the opportunity to show off its EV9 concept, which previews a large SUV to slot above the compact <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kia-ev6-electric-suv-battery-pack-cooking-2022-4">EV6</a>. Boxy and imposing, the EV9 concept looks like a futuristic take on Kia's popular Telluride SUV. </p><p>Kia says the EV9 will have more than 300 miles of range when it hits US dealerships in 2023. We hope the SUV looks a lot like this concept when it comes to life, but some of the EV9's most interesting design elements — like its suicide doors — probably won't make it into production. </p><h2><strong>Indi One</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Indi EV Indi One" height="1571" width="2095" msid="90943586" hostid="261"></div><p>You'd be forgiven for not being aware of Indi EV, given the sheer number of electric-vehicle startups trying to make a name for themselves at this very moment. </p><p>Los Angeles-based Indi was founded in 2017 and kicked off preorders for its first model, an SUV called the Indi One, at the auto show. Here's how Indi is different from other upstarts: It included a powerful computer in the Indi One that it calls the "Vehicle Integrated Computer." </p><div type="image" title="Indi EV Indi One." height="1667" width="2500" msid="90943587" hostid="261"></div><p>This, Indi says, will allow people to play video games, make video calls for work, use social media, and do other things normally reserved for a regular computer. Despite coming from a company — and a country — that's never sold cars of any kind stateside, they blend right in with the electric and gas SUVs on the market.</p><div type="image" title="The Vinfast VF9." height="1688" width="2500" msid="90943590" hostid="261"></div><p>It'll undoubtedly be difficult for a new brand to break into the American market. But the large VF9 hits a segment that has barely any electric options at the moment. There are several compact and medium-sized electric SUVs to choose from, but only a couple with a third row like the VF9. </p><p>To keep costs down, Vinfast is having customers lease their batteries for a monthly fee. The company guarantees it will replace a vehicle's battery if its capacity drops below 70%.</p><h2><strong>Volkswagen ID.Buzz</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="The Volkswagen ID.Buzz." height="1459" width="1946" msid="90943591" hostid="261"></div><p>The Volkswagen ID.Buzz doesn't arrive on US shores until 2024, but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-id-buzz-volkswagen-electric-bus-minivan-2024-interior-2022-4">we got an early glimpse</a> at the funky minivan in New York. And we can report that it looks great in person. 10 Things in Tech: Apple debuts new products

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Dozens upon dozens of <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Electric-cars">electric cars</keyword> are set to flood the market in coming years. </li><li>New EVs are coming from startups like Lucid, Rivian, and Canoo, along with legacy OEMs like <keyword id="6355174" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ford">Ford</keyword>. </li><li>By 2023, everything from supercars to offroad pickups will have a battery-powered option. </li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cycling-boom-us-streets-infrastructure-bike-lanes-history-united-states-2020-12">Gas-powered cars have ruled the roads</a> for more than a century - but <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> are about to have their day. </p><p>Today, climate-conscious shoppers can choose from dozens of partially or fully electric models. But the number of EVs on the market is set to skyrocket in coming years as startups mature and as traditional automakers double down on the growing space. </p><p><keyword id="4581" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="general-motors">General Motors</keyword> alone plans to have 30 electric models in showrooms by 2025. And several other automakers have issued <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/promises-carmakers-have-made-about-their-future-electric-vehicles-2020-1">similar pledges</a> to phase out gas guzzlers in favor of zero-emission cars. </p><p>Analysts at McKinsey &amp; Company <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/automotive-and-assembly/our-insights/the-road-ahead-for-e-mobility#">estimate</a> that carmakers will launch 400 new battery-powered models through 2025. But plenty of interesting new EVs will be on sale much sooner than that. </p><p>Check out some of the coolest EVs hitting the market by 2023 - along with their expected arrival dates - below.</p><h2>Audi E-Tron GT (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="Audi E-Tron GT" height="1668" width="2500" msid="81617802" hostid="261"></div><p>Audi has talked up the E-Tron GT for a while now - and it showed off a concept version in "Avengers: Endgame" - but finally <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/audi-e-tron-gt-electric-sedan-performance-horsepower-specs-2021-2">unveiled the real thing</a> in February. </p><p>It starts at roughly $100,000 for the base model, which puts out 469 horsepower and has a range of 238 miles. The $140,000 high-performance RS version generates 590 horsepower and hits 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, Audi says. </p><p>The car hits US dealerships this summer. </p><h2><keyword id="6355119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="bmw">BMW</keyword> i4 (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="BMW i4." height="1668" width="2500" msid="81617803" hostid="261"></div><p>BMW may be a bit behind the times with its "i" prefix that, once upon a time, was attached to anything techy. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-i4-ev-sedan-range-specs-horsepower-2021-3">the i4</a> still bodes well for BMW's electric future.  </p><p>The German brand's first electric sedan, the i4 will have an EPA-estimated range of 300 miles and will put out up to 530 horsepower, according to BMW. There will also be a performance model. </p><p>The i4 goes on sale this year. </p><h2>BMW iX (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="BMW iX" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617804" hostid="261"></div><p>BMW is also developing an X5-sized electric SUV that's set to enter production in late 2021 and arrive at dealers in early 2022. Delivering more than 300 miles of range and 500 horsepower in its top trim, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bmw-ix-electric-suv-first-look-photos-specs-details-2020-11">the iX</a> will be BMW's flagship EV. </p><p>In Germany, the SUV will start at roughly $92,000, but there's no word on US pricing yet. </p><h2>Bollinger B1/B2 (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="4 Bollinger Motors B1 3 4 studio" height="1498" width="2000" msid="81617806" hostid="261"></div><p>Michigan-based EV startup Bollinger Motors somehow managed to develop a cutting-edge electric truck that still keeps things old school.</p><p>The firm plans to sell an SUV, the B1, and a pickup, the B2, that have utilitarian looks, exposed rivets, and manual switches of offroaders from a bygone era. But the vehicles still pack a modern punch - Bollinger says they'll produce 614 horsepower and 668 lb-ft of torque. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bollinger-ev-startup-suv-pickup-b1-b2-updated-design-2020-12">B1 and B2</a> cost $125,000 and deliveries are set to begin in 2022. </p><h2>Cadillac Lyriq (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="Cadillac Lyriq" height="825" width="1102" msid="81617807" hostid="261"></div><p>Cadillac is set to become GM's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gm-bullish-outlook-plans-to-take-on-tesla-with-cadillac-2019-1">flagship electric brand</a>, and its first EV is just over the horizon. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cadillac-just-unveiled-its-lyriq-electric-car-2020-8">Lyriq</a>, unveiled last summer in concept form, will be one of the first vehicles to use GM's Ultium battery tech when it hits US dealerships in 2022. </p><p>Details are still scarce, but GM has said the crossover will come in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, and that it will deliver at least 300 miles of range. It will cost between $75,000 and $100,000 to start, GM said. </p><h2>Canoo pickup truck (2023)</h2><div type="image" title="Canoo pickup truck" height="1080" width="1440" msid="81617808" hostid="261"></div><p>EV startup Canoo's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canoo-ev-pickup-truck-first-look-features-specs-2021-3">upcoming pickup</a> is unlike anything on the road today. The pod-shaped truck features a host of useful built-in features like fold-out work surfaces, a bed extender, power outlets galore, and a customizable rear seating area.</p><p>Canoo is targeting the truck at businesses, but it's also positioning it as the ultimate adventure vehicle. Various camper shells and roof racks will be available once the truck hits the market. Preorders will open up in late 2021. </p><h2>Ford F-150 Electric (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="2021_F 150 Raptor_05" height="1511" width="2500" msid="81617809" hostid="261"></div><p>The Ford F-150 isn't just the best-selling pickup truck in the US, it's been the nation's most popular vehicle overall for more than four decades. And come 2022, it's getting an electric version. </p><p>Ford has already teased the F-150 EV with gimmicky stunts like a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXFHgoon7lg">video</a> showing a prototype towing a freight train loaded up with 1 million pounds. The Blue Oval has said the F-150 EV will be powered by a dual-motor setup but hasn't released many details beyond that. </p><h2>GMC Hummer EV (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="2022 GMC HUMMER EV 002" height="1477" width="1969" msid="81617811" hostid="261"></div><p>GM resurrected the Hummer name for its much-hyped electric pickup truck, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gmc-hummer-ev-electric-pickup-truck-photos-features-specs-2020-10">2022 GMC Hummer EV</a>. GMC calls the model a "supertruck" and says it will offer 1,000 horsepower and 350 miles of range. The $112,595 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2022-hummer-ev-edition-1-coolest-features-gmc-electric-pickup-2020-10">"Edition 1" model</a> will be available to reservation holders this fall, with a handful of other trim levels to follow. </p><h2>Lucid Air (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="Lucid Air exterior_3" height="1620" width="2160" msid="81617812" hostid="261"></div><p>The Air will be the first production vehicle out of Lucid, an upstart EV maker that's staffed by former <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> engineers and run by the man who led Tesla's Model S project.</p><p>With an EPA-estimated range of up to 517 miles and a base price of under $70,000, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucids-ceo-rawlinson-electric-sedan-suv-crazed-market-2021-3?r=tl-sub">luxury sedan</a> takes direct aim at the Model S. And it appears to have Elon Musk and Tesla shaking in their boots. The same day that Lucid announced its base sedan would cost $69,900 after federal tax incentives, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-model-s-price-cut-lucid-unveils-air-2020-10">changed the price</a> of the Model S to undercut it by just a few hundred dollars. </p><h2>Lucid SUV (2023)</h2><div type="image" title="Lucid Motors Project Gravity_3" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617814" hostid="261"></div><p>Taking a page out of Tesla's playbook, Lucid plans to build a crossover following the launch of its debut luxury sedan. </p><p>Lucid hasn't said much about its future family-hauler, dubbed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-motors-project-gravity-electric-suv-available-2023-air-ev-2020-9">Project Gravity</a>, but claims it will offer loads of interior space and will "redefine the luxury SUV." But the German luxury brand plans to start building a battery-powered version of its best-selling model, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-macan-suv-electric-confirmed-2019-2">Macan crossover</a>, by the end of 2022. An electric Cayman and Boxster are on the way as well, but Porsche has no plans to produce a zero-emission version of its flagship 911 sports car anytime soon. </p><h2>Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="2021 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo._21" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617816" hostid="261"></div><p>The electron-powered Macan is still a long way away, but EV buyers who desire nothing less than an electric Porsche with some utility and ample cargo capacity may find what they're looking for in the upcoming <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-4s-turbo-s-cross-turismo-ev-wagon-ebikes-2021-3">Taycan Cross Turismo</a>. </p><p>It's the station wagon version of the brand's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-4s-review-0-60-price-range-ev-electric-2020-11">Taycan sedan</a>, and Porsche gave it a bit of extra trunk space, more ground clearance, and standard all-wheel drive. The Taycan Cross Turismo starts at $90,900 and hits US dealerships this summer. </p><h2>Rivian R1T/R1S (2021)</h2><div type="image" title="Rivian R1S" height="1120" width="1494" msid="81617817" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-rivian-ev-startup-amazon-backed-tesla-challenger-2021-2">Rivian</a> is a California-based EV startup that has been developing vehicles since 2009 and has emerged as one of the most promising Tesla rivals. It's set to start delivering its first R1T pickups and R1S SUVs this summer. </p><p>The upstart is taking aim at the outdoorsy crowd with its high-end vehicles that will offer a range of up to 400 miles, up to 750 horsepower, and innovative features like a "gear tunnel" that can fit a slide-out camping kitchen. </p><p>Base versions of the R1T and R1S are due out in 2022 and will start at $67,500 and $70,000, respectively. </p><h2>Tesla Cybertruck (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="Cybertruck" height="696" width="1235" msid="81617818" hostid="261"></div><p>According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the long-anticipated Cybertruck has been fully developed and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-elon-musk-engineering-finished-deliveries-maybe-this-year-2021-1">deliveries may start in late 2021</a>. However, he said, the more likely scenario is that mass production will begin in 2022. </p><p>The polarizing pickup, unveiled at a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-pickup-trucks-coolest-features-2019-11">splashy event</a> in 2019, will have a 500-mile range and a 0-60-mph time of under three seconds in its top configuration, Tesla says. It will have a built-in bed cover, a slide-out ramp, and a bulletproof body made from stainless steel. </p><p>Tesla says the Cybertruck will eventually come in single, dual, and triple-motor versions and will have a starting price under $40,000. </p><h2>Tesla Roadster (2022)</h2><div type="image" title="Tesla Roadster." height="1604" width="2854" msid="81617819" hostid="261"></div><p>Elon Musk said the upcoming Roadster would be the "fastest production car ever made, period," when it was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-tesla-roadster-2017-2017-11">unveiled</a> in 2017. Tesla promises that the supercar will be capable of speeds exceeding 250 mph and will have a range of 620 miles - more than any EV on the market today. It'll make the sprint to 60 mph in a blistering 1.9 seconds and hit 100 mph in 4.2 seconds, Tesla says. </p><p>But for it to do all of those impressive things it needs to get here first. Tesla initially said the $250,000 "Founders Series" Roadster would arrive in 2020, but Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1354869981146738693">said</a> in January that production would need to wait until 2022. </p><h2>Volkswagen ID.Buzz (2023)</h2><div type="image" title="VW ID Buzz concept" height="1667" width="2500" msid="81617820" hostid="261"></div><p>Volkswagen made a splash in 2017 when it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-volkswagen-microbus-coming-2022-2017-8">announced</a> plans to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-microbus-launching-in-2022-will-have-big-updates-2018-1">bring back its iconic Microbus</a> as an EV. It's not known exactly what the van will look like when it hits streets, but VW did build a concept vehicle (shown above). </p><p>We don't know all the details of the ID.Buzz quite yet, but the carmaker said it will be based on the same EV platform that underpins VW's ID.4 and ID.3 models. </p><p>Although the ID.Buzz was initially slated to hit the market in 2022, Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh told <a href="https://www.autonews.com/cars-concepts/vws-keogh-id-buzz-reactions-been-huge">Automotive News</a> in January that the project has been pushed to 2023. </p>
