It’s still three months for the telecom major <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> India's $1-billion IT outsourcing contract to expire, and its current tech vendor <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> is fighting a tough battle to hold on to the huge contract. This is because Vodafone is said to be considering some options, including branching out some portions of the contract to other service providers, three people aware of the matter told ET. 
 
One of IBM's largest telecom contracts in Asia, the contract is set to expire in June end, which is why the company is aggressively chasing a renewed contract even if they have to sacrifice some margins. 
 
"Even if <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/it-services/IBM-inks-deal-with-VMWare-tries-to-bolster-cloud-credentials/articleshow/51096444.cms" target="_blank">IBM</a> does retain most of the contract, the renewed deal will come at the cost of margins. They are being forced to fight on price as well," said one of the sources. As of now, Vodafone hands out $190-200 million of annual business to IBM. 
 
When contacted via email, an IBM spokeswoman said that the company "does not comment on rumour and/or speculation nor do we comment on client confidential contracts".

IBM is battling hard to save Vodafone’s $1-billion outsourcing deal

It has an edge since it’s the only Indian IT company with greater market share in healthcare than in manufacturing. <div type="image" title="Copy of Copy of IT market share to grow goldman sachs" msid="77864275" hostid="261"></div> “We see TCS as one of the largest beneficiaries of these trends given its wide array of services and capabilities, geographic presence, wide client base, consistent strong execution and ability to work remotely at a large scale with c.450K employees,” said the Goldman Sachs’ report dated August 28. Riding the increased reliance of businesses on digital technology, working from home also cuts down costs like transportation and infrastructure expenses, allowing companies to expand their margin and get a bigger bang for their buck. How Indian IT companies will ride the third wave of outsourcing Demand already exists. History also supports the conclusion that the Indian IT industry is normally a late cycle beneficiary of global changes in technology. When the first wave of outsourcing occurred in 2000 after Y2K — a computer program bug that was expected to cause havoc as the year changed from 1999 to 2000 — the Indian IT sector grew faster than 40% from a small base and minimal global penetration to Indian IT companies becoming market leaders, according to Goldman Sachs. And, again, after the 2008 GFC when the Indian IT industry grew at more than 15% for three to four years before growth returned to high single digits. “This happened both due to a shift to cloud based infrastructure and the higher use of automation tools, forcing Indian IT firms to look for new ways to sell IT solutions, shifting from labor cost arbitrage to business transformation through digital technologies,” explained the report. This is compounded by the fact that India is currently home to the largest pool of digital skilled employees in the world. <div type="image" title="snapshot-1598933384850" msid="77864293" hostid="261"></div> “We believe these digitally trained employees at Indian IT firms are likely to drive overall revenue growth, which would be the key reason for their increasing relevance amid the requirement for digital-at-scale solutions,” said Goldman Sachs. <div type="image" title="pjote chart" msid="77864307" hostid="261"></div> However, not everything is as rosy as it appears Even though businesses are looking to become more digital, recurring revenues for IT companies have been falling as compared to those vendors which specifically provide software as a service (SaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). In order to address this risk, Goldman Sachs argues that Indian IT services companies will focus more on signing large contracts that look after a client’s entire IT function. These companies also have the option to sell their solutions on a vertical-specialised platform — one that focuses on a specific industry — to increase stickiness of revenue. “Both of the above approaches require more fixed-price and outcome-based contracts with higher risk-reward,” said the global investment firm. Examples of this strategy being applied already exist with Infosys’ deal with Verizon in late 2018 and TCS’ deal with Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) for $1.5 billion in February earlier this year. TCS, Infosys and HCL Tech have the most to gain from post COVID wave of outsourcing

There is an opportunity for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=software+exporters+">software exporters</a> in India as about $250 billion worth of deals in the sector are set to be renewed over the course of next 36 months. 
 Several outsourcing contracts worth at least $1 billion each from companies such as US retailer Gap and <keyword id="120748" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="British-Telecom">British telecom</keyword> firm <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vodafone+">Vodafone</a> are coming up for renewal in the next one year. 
 
Therefore, home-grown software exporters such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tata+Consultancy+Services+%28TCS%29+">Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)</a> and <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> are preparing themselves to grab the deals from incumbent multinational rivals such as IBM and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hewlett-Packard+">Hewlett-Packard</a> and increase market share over these companies. 
 
Data from outsourcing advisory ISG suggests that at least six such deals will expire in 2016 and another nine deals with a total contract value of at least $500 million each from customers such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Arcelor-Mittal+">Arcelor-Mittal</a> and <keyword id="195234" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="BAE-Systems">BAE Systems</keyword> will also come up for renewal during this period. 
 The increasing number of contract expirations each year directly results from specific market trends. “We've seen the number of outsourcing transactions increase dramatically over time. At the same time the average duration of contracts has declined. As a consequence, contract expirations are occurring at a faster rate," said <keyword id="267192" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dinesh-Goel">Dinesh Goel</keyword>, partner and India head at ISG. 
 
Even as IBM and HP are expected to strive to renew these contracts, India's top outsourcing firms fancy their chances, having already grabbed significant market share from their multinational rivals over the past five years. 
 
According to another ISG report, Indian IT firms increased their share of the market to 27.1% during January-June, from 23.6% a year ago. This again came at the cost of European rivals such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Capgemini+">Capgemini</a> and <keyword id="327292" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Atos">Atos</keyword>. 
 Executives from both Indian and multinational firms are focusing on <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword>'s $1 billion contract with IBM which will expire early next year. It is being reported that preliminary discussions to renew the contract have already been started. 
 
"There is no question that incumbency isn't what it used to be - the non-incumbent win rate on competitive restructuring and renewal deals stands at over 60%," said Goel, adding India-heritage firms have been the significant beneficiaries of this trend as a winning provider. 
 
Indian IT firms have aggressively snatched large contracts by adopting tactics such as heavy upfront payments while bidding for large billion-dollar outsourcing deals and also using price to undercut rivals. 
 
At a time when investors are worried about the economic slowdown in China triggering a global meltdown and with technology spending set to drop at least 5.5% this year, India's top IT services firms will chase these upcoming deals even more aggressively, executives said.

The contract has been signed with Tata Power Company Ltd (TPCL) and engineering major Larsen &amp; Toubro (L&amp;T) while defence public sector undertaking Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) will also be part of the project. Biocon gains 5% Biocon shares gained nearly 5% after its subsidiary along with Mylan NV, launched an insulin glargine injection Semglee in the US market. The company said ‘Semglee’ has received final approval from the US FDA and has an identical amino acid sequence to Sanofi’s Lantus, a drug that is used to control high blood sugar. Future Retail tumbles 9% Future Retail shares tumbled 9% after the Government Pension Fund Global, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds sold 95 lakh shares at ₹158.61 per share. The Government Pension Fund Global fund held 2.28% stake in the Future Retail at the end of June. Top stock movers — ONGC, Future Retail, Bharti Infratel, Escorts, RIL, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Biocon, L&T, BEML and more

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vodafone">Vodafone</a>, one of India’s top telecom operators, is now in talks with the software major <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Vodafone-Indias-CIO-quits-ahead-of-1-billion-deal-renewal/articleshow/48453930.cms">renewal of a $1 billion outsourcing contract</a> that will expire in June next year. 
 
The mobile network operator outsources services like management of application development and the network services in the IT sector. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IBM">IBM</a>, which is trying to retain the deal, is also planning to sell its data analytics solutions to Vodafone, as published in an Economic Times report, adding that companies like Wipro, TCS, Infosys and <keyword id="43217" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra">Tech Mahindra</keyword> are also under consideration for the deal. 
 
Requesting anonymity, one of the two people familiar with the development said, "It hasn't given out the request for proposals to these vendors as of now. But they will in coming months gauge their capabilities and decide whether any of them can provide best value for money and could deliver end-to-end services, besides taking Vodafone IT to the next level." However, there was no response from Vodafone in this regards. 
 As per the industry experts, Vodafone will prefer to renew the entire deal with IBM, but it is evaluating all options as the company is not in a situation to chop-up the agreement the way <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> recently did. 
 
Sanchit Vir Gogia, chief analyst &amp; CEO at Greyhound Research, said, "Bharti Airtel is leveraging these newer delivery models to better manage cost and time spent on servicing existing infrastructure and applications. Telcos globally are exploring, so should Vodafone." 
 
For IBM, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel+">Airtel </a>contract was a landmark deal in terms of size and was also the first IT outsourcing order from India's telecom sector. Apart from Vodafone, IBM will be trying to renew an outsourcing deal worth $800 million-$900 million with India's third-ranked telco Idea Cellular, which comes up for renewal in 2019-20.

Vodafone India has a new ally in IBM for a whopping $1 bn deal

As per a recent revelation,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vodafone+india"> Vodafone India</a>’s chief information officer <keyword id="312129" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anthony-Thomas">Anthony Thomas</keyword> has tendered his resignation informing the firm about his plans to pursue other opportunities. As per the media reports, the move came months ahead of the expiration of Vodafone and <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> pact. 
 
Requesting anonymity, officials have revealed that the $1-billion outsourcing contract between Vodafone and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IBM+">IBM </a>is set to expire in a couple of months and talks are on to renew the deal. 
 
An official email has also been sent to all <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vodafone">Vodafone </a>employees on Wednesday confirming Thomas’s exit from the company but the name that will replace Thomas as CIO is yet to come up. 
 
The mail sent to the employees reads, "Anthony Thomas, chief information officer, India, has decided to pursue career opportunities outside Vodafone. His last day at Vodafone will be September 15, 2015." 
 
The spokesperson, however, didn’t comment on the matter yet. 
 
Thomas joined Vodafone in April 2012 and played a key role in creating a new centralized IT structure within the company during his tenure. During his stint at Vodafone, the company also rolled out several new technology initiatives including the company's micro-financing service m-pesa and also a new data warehouse. 
 
Prior to Vodafone, Thomas had worked with companies such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Citigroup">Citigroup</a>, Ernst &amp; Young (E&amp;Y) and Intelligroup Inc.

The billion dollar contracts are becoming rare and it is a tough fight. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+IT+companies&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian IT companies</a> such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TCS&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TCS</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=infosys&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Infosys</a>, etc are back in the renewal of contracts battle and are eying deals worth $100 billion. 
 
The renewal contracts for 2016-17 will pour in from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=deutsche+bank&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Deutsche Bank</a>, UBS, Mitsubishi and Vodafone. 
 The research and outsourcing advisory firm ISG stated the renewals are of prime importance for <keyword id="6357549" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-IT-companies">Indian IT companies</keyword> because big customers like AstraZeneca, Lowe's and JPMorgan Chase are going for insource software projects, making big billion contracts rare. 
 As per ISG, large technology customers such as British utilities firm National Grid, <keyword id="6357341" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deutsche-Bank">Deutsche Bank</keyword>, UK's Network Rail and Japan's Mitsubishi currently have billion-dollar engagements with clients such as IBM, CSC, Hitachi and Carillion, all of which will come up for renewal. 
 
"The competitive intensity is going up in the industry and hence the pressure on pricing levels will continue. The scope and construct of the deals are also changing with infrastructure delivery models becoming hybrid (mix of cloud and on premise) quite frequently," said Dinesh Goel, partner and India head at ISG. 
 
It is noteworthy that Infosys is on a momentum as it reported three consecutive quarters of outperformance. 
 
"Our deal wins have improved dramatically and we are approaching $800-900 million a quarter in large deals. That's more than double of what we used to do," Infosys’ <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vishal+sikka&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Vishal Sikka</a> had stated recently.
