Airtel and Vodafone Idea have more than doubled their entry-level mobile rates in the last 2-3 years to Rs 199 that comes with 28 days validity. State-run <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> was the only player that added new subscribers and led the market in terms of new net customer addition, according to a monthly subscribers report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Friday. According to the report, BSNL added over 2.94 million mobile subscribers in July. Bharti Airtel lost 1.69 million mobile subscribers which was highest among its peers. Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio lost 1.41 million and 758,000 mobile subscribers, respectively. Overall, the telecom subscriber base in the country declined marginally to 1,205.17 million in July from 1,205.64 million in June. North East, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, UP East, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh telecom circles recorded decline in mobile customer base post the hike in mobile services rates. The wireline or the fixed line connections segment increased by about 1% to 35.56 million in July from 35.11 million in June. Reliance Jio led the fixed-line segment with addition of over 480,000 new subscribers. It was followed by Bharti Airtel which added over 136,000 new subscribers, VMIPL 12,413, Vi 11,375, Tata Teleservices 3,971 and Quadrant added 12 new fixed line customers. BSNL was the biggest loser in the segment. The state-run firm lost 134,000 fixed line customers and its sister concern lost 56,454 customers. The broadband customer base in the country increased to 946.19 million at the end of July from 940.75 million in June. Top five players accounted for 98.42% of total broadband connection in the country. Reliance Jio led the chart with 488.63 million <keyword id="23252277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-customers" source="keywords">broadband customers</keyword>, Airtel with 284.03 million, Vodafone Idea with 126.72 million, BSNL with 29.61 million and Atria Convergence with 2.26 million. A likely single-digit majority in the House will complicate the process," Capital Economics wrote in a separate note on Friday.Additionally, Republican legislators may fear negative bond market reactions if tax cuts are pursued, as traders have grown increasingly concerned about rising US debt. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped sharply after Trump's victory as the market priced in higher interest rates, higher government spending, and higher inflation under Trump. There's also room to doubt Trump's push for deregulation, a promise that has helped drive financial stocks higher. Capital Economics said that Trump had made the same claims of massive deregulation in 2016, with little long-term impact on the market. Finally, the research firm said it considers Trump's tariff and immigration policy to be net negatives for the economy. Tech companies seem like a clearer beneficiary since the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) should be less hostile to their interests.For all the optimism in markets, some strategists are branching out from stocks.Jim Thorne, who's the chief market strategist at Canada-based wealth management firm Wellington-Altus, said in commentary that he's most interested in gold and bitcoin, which some have referred to as the yellow metal's digital doppelgänger.The world is awash with cash, making scarce assets like gold and bitcoin more valuable, and Thorne also noted that global economic growth is slowing. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Money market funds won't save the stock market from a painful decline, Bank of America says. </li><li>A 25-basis point Fed rate cut won't change the behavior of savers, according to the bank.</li></ul>The $6 trillion in money market funds will not save the stock market from a painful decline.A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-outlook-2024-6-trillion-cash-buy-the-dip-2023-12">common component of the bullish thesis for stocks</a> over the past year is that trillions of dollars of sidelined cash are set to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-outlook-money-wall-drive-stocks-july-record-highs-2024-6">flood the stock market </a>once the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, putting downward pressure on the juicy, risk-free 5% yield most money market funds offer.But <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/bac-stock?miRedirects=1">Bank of America</a> says not so fast, offering two structural reasons money market funds won't be the catalyst for a continued bull rally many investors expect.First, a measly 25-basis point interest rate cut from the Fed likely won't change the behavior of savers, as a cash yield of closer to 4% would still be a lot better than near-0% rates offered from 2009 through 2021.An interest rate decline of hundreds of basis points wouldn't do the trick either, according to the bank."Historically, MMF [Money Market Fund] AUM growth y/y is typically positive unless front-end rates &lt;2%," Bank of America rates strategist Mark Cabana said in a note on Thursday.According to Cabana, for money market funds to see negative outflows, the Fed would need to cut rates by at least 300 basis points, and that's not scheduled to happen anytime soon."Fed cuts will see MMF inflows slow but remain positive unless rates near zero," Cabana said.The December 2025 target for the federal funds rate is just above 3%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.The second issue is that even if the Fed were to substantially cut interest rates and spark a wave of redemptions from money market funds, that cash probably wouldn't flow into the stock market.According to Cabana, bonds would be the big beneficiary instead because money market funds compete mainly with checking accounts that offer near 0% yields rather than stocks."If MMF outflows happen cash likely to move into higher yielding fixed income, not equities. MMF to equities = bridge too far," Cabana said.Stock market bulls should ultimately retire the idea that trillions of dollars of money market funds will help buoy stock prices, the analysts said."MMF cash should remain sidelined from a risk taking perspective," Cabana concluded.

Here's what they had to say.<h2 id="8462fb98-a7b3-4420-a992-312fa3d5f99a">BMO's Brian Belski</h2>For BMO chief investment strategist Brian Belski, his big concern is that he's betting against fewer people in the market as overwhelmingly bearish sentiment just a few months ago has now flipped bullish."In May/June, when you had a lot of bears or those that had been late to jump on the bull parade all of a sudden switch their forecasts and kind of chase markets up, which is pretty, I mean pretty, pretty, pretty classic," Belski told Business Insider.He added: "I just think that too many people are bullish again."Though it sounds counterintuitive, Belski is worried about the stock market moving significantly higher, not lower, from here, because that would set up a prime environment for a sharp pullback down the road."I don't want to see a super spike now. I think the faster the market goes up right now, that would worry me," Belski said.And with many investors feeling bullish about stocks, the market is more vulnerable to a sell-off if there's a macro surprise that badly misses estimates."From a sentiment perspective, we're one bad macro data point away from a pullback," Belski said.As to what that macro data point could be, a surprise surge in inflation, a really bad jobs report, or a big miss from Nvidia all come to mind for Belski.<h2 id="664aaf94-29d7-4cd0-8675-f7ebca4f3a49">Yardeni Research's Eric Wallerstein</h2>Eric Wallerstein, chief market strategist at Yardeni Research, told Business Insider that there are two tail risks that could halt the stock market's advance that should be on investors' radars.The first one is rising geopolitical tensions."Let's say the Middle East blows out, Russia-Ukraine, China-Taiwan, like just the overall geopolitical scene is much more tense," Wallerstein said.On top of that, populist movements and nationalism are gaining popularity in countries around the world, and that's not great for a globalized economy, according to Wallerstein. "That just leads to a world with less strand and less growth," Wallerstein said.The second risk is, similar to Belski's concern, a 1990's type melt-up in the stock market."The idea is, valuations expand and you kind of get a blow off top, because the market gets too ebullient, and then that creates the conditions to get a bear market," Wallerstein said.And the Fed could pour gasoline onto the fire if it cuts interest rates aggressively, according to Wallerstein."If they do cut that much, which is such an extreme path of policy, I think that blow off top becomes increasingly likely, and it's definitely something we're worried about," Wallerstein said.While riding a bubble on the way up isn't a bad thing, it's the sharp and quick downturn that often follows a bubble peak that could lead to a period of significant underperformance for investors.<h2 id="5ae1cfb1-3240-4f20-86f9-151f36be49a8">Carson Group's Sonu Varghese</h2>Sonu Varghese, global macro strategist at Carson Group, told Business Insider that he has been "thinking about rising risks for a few months now.""We still like equities and haven't changed our overweight, but we've increased our exposure to diversifiers like long-term treasuries and low volatility equities," Varghese said.Varghese's more defensive portfolio posture is driven mostly by what a policy mistake from the Federal Reserve could look like.With the inflation fight largely over, and labor market trends broadly weakening, "policy is too tight," Varghese said."The risk is that the Fed doesn't act aggressively enough to arrest the labor market downtrend, and instead follows a gradual approach to rate cuts that leaves them further behind the curve. Which also means they'll have to do larger catch up cuts later on (a re-run of what happened in 2022, but from the opposite side," Varghese explained.While he sees no risk of an imminent recession, he said the risk of a recession will rise within the next six to 12 months if the Fed falls far behind the curve."That could potentially impact equities - bad economic data will likely be traded as bad news by investors," Varghese warned.To be clear, all three of these strategists are sticking with stocks and still have a bullish view of what lies ahead for the market.But even they worry about the neverending list of potential risks.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Stifel warns of a sharp stock market correction by year-end, with the S&amp;P 500 potentially dropping 12%.</li><li>Chief equity strategist Barry Bannister said high valuations and speculative investor behavior are a concern.</li></ul>Investors should prepare for a sharp and quick correction in the stock market before the end of the year, according to Stifel.In a note on Thursday, chief equity strategist Barry Bannister of Stifel warned that the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500">S&amp;P 500</a> could trade 12% lower in the fourth quarter."Our instruments tell us to expect an S&amp;P 500 correction to the very low 5,000s by 4Q24," Bannister said.According to Bannister, there are a number of factors that are giving him cause for concern, including the idea that investors are exhibiting the type of behavior that is present during bubbles and manias."Just as countries that go rogue become almost un-investable, investors caught in the grips of a speculative fever become almost un-analyzable," Bannister said.For one, Bannister is concerned about current stock market valuations, which are approaching a "near three-generation high" based on the S&amp;P 500's price-to-earnings multiple of around 24x.In addition, the sharp outperformance of large-cap growth stocks relative to value stocks is approaching the same peak seen in February 2000 and August 2020, which both served as a warning of an imminent bear market.On the labor front, while Bannister admits that rising labor supply via increased immigration has supported economic growth, with US GDP growing at a rate above pre-pandemic trend levels, overall labor demand has been fading."Fading labor demand is now symbolic of recession risk," Bannister said.Bannister highlighted that the non-farm payroll 6-month diffusion index just crossed below a "recession trigger level."<div type="image" title="Chart of recession indicator flashing" height="735" width="1113" msid="113533833" hostid="261" sizebytes="98074"></div>The diffusion index helps measure the breadth of job gains or losses across all economic industries.Shifting to the election in November, Bannister said the typical "pre-election juice" for the economy is likely to fade towards the end of the year, as election promises from both sides of the aisle retreat and reality sets in that it's hard to pass significant legislation in what could be a divided government."Pre-election juice for the economy may recede at year-end, causing stocks (which anticipate the future) to dip ~4 months in advance, and that is 4Q24E," Bannister explained.Finally, Bannister said that many investors are not appreciating <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-crash-opposite-scenario-meltup-risk-fed-rate-cuts-2024-5">the risks of a bubble in technology stocks,</a> akin to what happened during the dot-com craze nearly 25 years ago. "It takes one generation to forget the dangers of a bubble, and it is Groundhog Day versus the 1990s Tech Bubble; in reality 'new tech' isn't even 'new' and today's low Equity Risk Premium appears to us to lock-in a weak S&amp;P 500 next-10-year compound annual real total return close to 3% real and 6% nominal," Bannister said.
