The former UPA government<a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/vodafone-back-to-square-one-112031700019_1.html"> retrospectively amended a</a> law to tax Vodafone, after the Supreme Court said that Vodafone is not liable as per ‘existing tax laws’. In the last six years, the arbitration has been dragging on at a snail’s pace. In the meanwhile, yet another Supreme Court decision has made Vodafone question the logic of continuing in India, amongst many hurdles. A few days back, its CEO Nick Read said that if Indian government does not provide a relief in the aggregate gross revenue (AGR) case--- it might<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/vodafone-writes-off-book-value-of-indian-operation-ceo-flags-liquidation-risk/articleshow/72031766.cms"> consider liquidation</a>. Indian government is in no mood to relent and has given three months to Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea to clear its dues. Vodafone was asked to pay up ₹44,150 crore to the department in piled up AGR dues after it lost a case in the Supreme Court last month. This hit has made Vodafone Idea posted the highest-ever quarterly loss by Indian company at ₹50,000 crore. Should the company fall, it could set yet another dubious record as largest-ever non-performing asset or a dud loan. As per an<a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/lenders-fear-vodas-rs-1l-cr-turning-into-npa/articleshow/72063199.cms"> Economic Times report</a>, banks have an exposure of as much as ₹1,00,000 crore to Vodafone. These loans are in trouble as most of them lack securities and guarantees. Neither of the two promoters – Vodafone and Kumar Mangalam-led Aditya Birla Group— are keen on infusing equity. In fact, their stock is being sold at the price of hot cross buns -- ₹3 per share with a face value of ₹10. If Vodafone Idea is unable to pay up its lenders, it has assets to fall back on, say experts. “I think the assets, including the network and spectrum are definitely very valuable, so it would not come to a situation where surrendering should be required,” Kunal Bajaj, an independent telecom analyst told Business Insider India. Whether the asset will be able to offset the loans, deferred spectrum payment (not including AGR dues) it owes to the government and the tax claims if at all – is yet to be seen. These are the stocks to watch out for during the trading session today: Reliance Industries Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries said it had completed the sale of about 10% stake in its retail unit to a clutch of foreign investors for ₹47,265 crore. Since September 25, the company has sold 10.09% stake in Reliance Retail Ventures (RRVL) to private equity firms Silver Lake Partners, KKR, GIC, TPG and General Atlantic, as well as sovereign wealth funds, Mubadala, ADIA and PIF. Vodafone-Idea Post the completion of the much-delayed merger of Bharti Infratel and Indus Towers on Thursday, Vodafone Idea (VIL) received cash consideration of ₹3,760.1 crore for its 11.15% shareholding in Indus. The shares of Vodafone-Idea ended flat on Thursday. Infosys The Infosys subsidiary, Simplus has collaborated with Salesforce for a vaccine management cloud solution. The solution has been built on the Salesforce Platform in support of Salesforce Work.com for Vaccines as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. The shares of Infosys ended 1.22% lower on Thursday. Mphasis IT firm Mphasis subsidiary, Mphasis Consulting, has acquired UK-based Datalytyx for up to £13.3 million (about ₹130.4 crore). The acquisition is expected to provide access to strengthen Mphasis next-generation Data GTM Strategy and provide higher value partnership status with Snowflake and Talend for cloud-based data services, a regulatory filing said. The shares of Mphasis ended 0.50% lower on Thursday. Syngene International Syngene International announced that it had signed an agreement with Deerfield Discovery and Development Corporation (3DC) to collaborate for five years to advance therapeutic discovery projects. The shares of Syngene International ended 0.86% lower on Thursday. Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed penalties of ₹10 lakh and ₹5 lakh on Muthoot Finance and Manappuram Finance respectively for norm violations. The central bank has penalised Muthoot Finance for non-compliance with directions issued by RBI on maintenance of loan-to-value ratio in gold loans and on obtaining a copy of PAN card of the borrower while granting gold loans in excess of ₹5 lakh, contravening RBI norms. Manappuram Finance has been fined for non-compliance with directions issued by RBI on verification of ownership of gold jewellery The shares of Muthoot Finance ended 1% lower on Thursday, whereas Manappuram Finance lost nearly 2%. South Indian Bank South Indian Bank announced that the Marginal Cost of Funds Based Lending Rates (MCLR) for multiple tenors had been revised from November 20. One-month MCLR at 7.95% and one-year MCLR at 8.2%. The shares of South Indian Bank ended 4.14% lower on Thursday. Aarti Industries HDFC Mutual Fund reduced its stake in Aarti Industries from 7.08% to 5.08% on November 17. The shares of Aarti Industries ended 0.31% higher on Thursday. Apollo Hospitals Apollo Hospitals and Tata Medical and Diagnostics (TataMD) have collaborated to introduce TataMD CHECK diagnostic test (Feluda) for COVID-19 in India. Apollo Hospitals along with its subsidiary Apollo Diagnostics will offer the Tata MD CHECK testing in the national capital region (NCR) from the first week of December and thereafter it will be rolled out across all major metros in the country. Route Mobile Route Mobile announced that the chairman and non-executive director of the company, Chandrakant Gupta has resigned from the position of chairmanship of the board. Sandip Kumar Gupta will replace Chandrakant Gupta as the chairman of Route Mobile. The shares of Route Mobile ended 2% higher on Thursday. Zee Learn L&amp;T Infra Finance has increased its stake by 1.26 crore shares via off-market transfer from security trustee &amp; appropriated against outstanding loan amounts on November 18. Vodafone Group Plc on Monday said that its lenders have given their consent for the merger of <keyword id="6375231" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indus-towers">Indus Towers</keyword> and Bharti Infratel. On September 1, Vodafone Group had announced that it had agreed to proceed with the proposed merger. "The agreement to proceed was conditional on consent for a security package for the benefit of the Combined Company (the "Security Package") from Vodafone's existing lenders (for the Euro 1.3 billion loan utilised to fund Vodafone's contribution to <keyword id="9830239" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-vodafone-idea-ltd">the Vodafone Idea Ltd</keyword> rights issue in 2019). This consent has now been received," the company said in a statement on Monday. The parties will now approach <keyword id="4195801" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-national-company-law-tribunal">the National Company Law Tribunal</keyword> to make the merger scheme effective. The parties are working to complete the transaction expeditiously, it added. Kaleidoscope Innovation designs microsurgical instruments, devices used in minimally invasive surgery, drug delivery devices for ophthalmic therapies and user-centric wearables. Tata Motors down 1% Tata Motors shares lost 1% during the morning trade on September 4, despite the company winning an order from Energy Efficiency Services to procure 250 electric vehicles. Tata Motors will supply 150 Nexon XZ+ electric compact SUVs for the government use. However, EESL will procure Tata Nexon at ₹14.86 lakh each, ₹13,000 cheaper than its ex-showroom price. Maruti and Hero MotoCorp only gainers in the auto industry Maruti and Hero MotoCorp were the only gainers in the auto industry despite the volatile market. The shares of Maruti were up 2% whereas Hero gained nearly a percent. Jubilant FoodWorks open 2% lower The shares of Jubilant FoodWorks, the food chain which operates Dominos and Dunkin Donuts in India tanked 2% after the company posted a consolidated net loss of ₹74.47 crore for the quarter ended June 30. The company’s revenue from operations declined 59.07% to ₹388.41 crore. At 7:50 am the SGX Nifty was trading 0.92% lower pointing towards a red start for Nifty50. On Thursday, US stocks plunged, as a steep sell-off in tech shares dragged down the market. Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 2.78% lower. The Nasdaq Composite Index sank 4.96%. Here’s a list of stocks to watch for in trade on September 4: Vodafone-Idea After news reports surfaced suggesting that Verizon and Amazon may invest over $4 billion in the company, Vodafone Idea clarified to its investors, while it constantly evaluates various opportunities as part of corporate strategy, there is no such proposal currently before its board. The VIL filling came after BSE sought clarification from the company on Thursday over a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/amazon-verizon-may-give-voda-idea-lifeline-11599102122521.html">media report </a>suggesting that Verizon and Amazon could invest over $4 billion in Vodafone Idea. The board will also meet today to consider a fundraising proposal. The shares of Vodafone-Idea ended 29.80% higher yesterday. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited State-owned HAL has proposed to offer 5.02 lakh shares to the eligible employees of the company at ₹950.95 per share. The sale of shares will remain open from September 4 to 9. The shares of HAL ended 4% higher on September 3. Infosys IT services major Infosys is all set to acquire US-based product design and development firm Kaleidoscope Innovation for up to $42 million. Kaleidoscope Innovation designs microsurgical instruments, devices used in minimally invasive surgery, drug delivery devices for ophthalmic therapies and user-centric wearables. The shares of Infosys ended 1.21% higher on September 3. ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, SBI and other banking stocks The shares ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, SBI and other Banking stocks might react to the apex court decision today. The Supreme Court of India has adjourned hearing in the loan moratorium case till September 10. The court directed that accounts, which were not declared as non-performing assets till August 31 this year, shall not be declared NPA till further orders. The shares of ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, SBI ended nearly 2% lower on September 3. Future Retail The stock-exchanges revised Future Retail price band from 10% to 5%. The shares of Future Retail closed after hitting a 10% lower circuit in the past two days. The company is also slated to report its first quarterly earnings today. Tata Motors Government-owned Energy Efficiency Services has placed an order to procure 250 electric vehicles from Tata Motors and Hyundai Motor India. Tata Motors will supply 150 Nexon XZ+ electric compact SUVs for the government use. EESL will procure Tata Nexon at ₹14.86 lakh each, ₹13,000 cheaper than its ex-showroom price. The shares of Tata Motors ended nearly 1% higher yesterday. Jubilant Industries Jubilant Industries reported a net loss of ₹3.1 crore in the first quarter ended June 30 as against a profit of ₹9.6 crore in the same quarter last year. The revenue declined to ₹94.3 crore as compared to ₹151.8 crore in the same period last year. The shares of Jubilant Industries ended nearly 3% higher on September 3.
