<ul><li>Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea customers can now get their mobile numbers recharged by visiting an ATM.</li><li>Reliance Jio partnered with nine banks, allowing its users to recharge their number at over 1,10,000 ATMs across the country.</li><li>Airtel users can also visit Big Bazaar and Apollo Pharmacy to recharge their mobile numbers.</li></ul>India is currently under a 21-day nationwide lockdown to control the spread of Coronavirus in the country. To help its customers who usually visit a store to get their mobile number recharged, Jio has partnered with nine banks, allowing its customers to recharge their mobile using the bank’s ATMs. Now, Airtel and Vodafone Idea also announced a similar service. While Airtel partnered with only two banks, its customers can also recharge their mobile from Big Bazaar and Apollo Pharmacy. Reliance Jio which launched four years back was called a disruptor with their low tariffs, but that is no more the case. But it may end up costing you more in the long run. First off, while Airtel and Vodafone Idea offer 365 days validity, Jio is offering only 336 days of validity, which is 29 days less. Jio users will have to do an additional recharge of one month to get the same validity. Additionally, Jio offers limited free voice calls to only Jio numbers. In its annual plan, the telco is offering 12,000 off-net minutes or non-Jio minutes. Airtel and Vodafone Idea have no such restrictions and offer unlimited voice calling to any network. The end of discounted data era The fast and quick growth of Jio came from its ‘value’ offerings. Jio was able to gain 50 million subscribers within 83 days by first offering free services as part of its trial and then at highly competitive prices. It became the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/mukesh-ambanis-reliance-jio-becomes-the-largest-telco-by-revenue-and-subscribers-as-industry-shows-signs-of-recovery/articleshow/73667566.cms">largest telco</a> in the country with 369 million subscribers in January 2020. Other operators were forced to revise their plans to compete with Jio. However, the Mukesh Ambani-led company has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/reliance-jio-may-still-have-the-cheapest-plan-on-offer-as-airtel-and-vodafone-idea-have-a-lead-on-telecom-tariffs/articleshow/72335722.cms">increasing</a> its prices along with other telcos over the past few months and has also started charging for non-Jio calls. With this, the company is no longer offering the cheapest plans in the telecom segment. Jio had even proposed a massive hike in data prices last month, signalling the end of discounted data era. Reliance Jio vs Airtel vs Vodafone Idea best 3GB data per day plans

New Delhi, Apr 17 () Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have extended the validity of pre-paid mobile plans till May 3 for those users who could not recharge their account due to the lockdown imposed to contain Covid-19 spread. The extension in validity altogether benefits around 12 crore customers. It will enable customers to continue getting incoming calls even if they are unable to recharge their account till May 3. <ul><li>With over 130 crore Indians in lockdown, telecom companies could have benefited as mobile data usage was expected to increase.</li><li>However, as the lockdown forced recharge vendors to shut down, over 66% users who depend on them were unable to recharge their mobile numbers.</li><li>Additionally, the number of new mobile users also fell drastically, further dampening the mood in the telecom sector.</li></ul>As a majority of Indians work from home, the telecom sector was poised for a comeback as everyone expected data consumption to go up. While that did happen, the sector also lost out on a large chunk of business - as prepaid recharges from physical outlets went down. In the last one month, recharges were down by 35%, according to an Economic Times <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/lockdown-triggers-35-slump-in-mobile-recharge-volumes/articleshow/74998587.cms?from=mdr">report</a>. This is a big blow to the sector as it was touted to be one the few that was poised to gain as the entire world has shuttered down due to Coronavirus pandemic. “Telecom companies which are already bearing the brunt of the AGR (aggregate gross revenues) tussle should see some relaxations and should expect to see an improvement considering there is a surge demand in data and internet-dependent media,” Rajosik Banerjee, Partner and Head – financial risk management, KPMG in India told Business Insider India. Why did the recharges fail? While online recharges are common amongst the educated middle class, a large chunk which is a part of the mobile ecosystem is away from banking and purchasing online. More than 66% of India still depends on <keyword id="9013267" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="offline-recharges">offline recharges</keyword>, according to an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/telcos-plan-contactless-sim-sale-to-boost-customer-addition/articleshow/74973795.cms">Economic Times</a> report. With the lockdown forcing recharge vendors to shut shop, millions of users who rely on these shops are unable to recharge their mobile numbers. As a temporary relief measure, Vodafone Idea and Airtel have extended the incoming calls validity of nearly 200 million subscribers from low income groups and those who don’t have smartphones. Apart from this, telcos also partnered with leading banks to allow users to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/here-is-a-list-of-bank-atms-that-allow-you-to-recharge-your-jio-airtel-and-vodafone-numbers/articleshow/75006459.cms">recharge their mobile numbers at any of the 1,10,000 ATMs in India</a>. While this should help users who know which recharge they want, a bulk of Indians who could have used the extra freetime to use social media and streaming extensively, is a lost opportunity. Like in the case of basic needs, the supply and distribution chain has been broken for the telecom sector - in spite of increase in innate demand. Massive decline in new mobile connections due to lockdown While the telecom sector has been allowed to function during the lockdown, retail offices have been shut down. Due to this, there has been a massive decline in the number of new subscriber additions in March as well. The report also notes that telecom operators have been able to add only 5,00,000 new users during March. This is down from the 2.5-3 million users who are added per month on an average. To address this issue, Vodafone Idea is <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/to-add-user-nos-telcos-weigh-sale-of-contactless-sims/articleshow/74976777.cms">reportedly</a> working on a new digital customer acquisition process. This will allow users to take a new mobile connection from their homes. Mobile recharges are the latest victim of the lockdown, down by 35%

Companies like Airtel, Vodafone Idea and state-run BSNL have already announced similar extensions. While the private companies have extended the incoming call validity till May 3, BSNL has extended the validity till May 5. Unlike Airtel and Vodafone Idea, Jio to offer free incoming for all subscribers Airtel extends validity for over 30 million low-income users Airtel had earlier announced that around 30 million subscribers have not been able to recharge their prepaid mobile numbers. This extension was provided to help low-income users. "Keeping in mind their connectivity needs, Airtel is extending the validity of these accounts till May 3, 2020. All these customers will now be able to receive incoming calls on their Airtel mobile numbers even after the validity of their plan is exhausted,” the company said. Vodafone Idea extends validity of over 90 million feature phone users Similarly, Vodafone Idea announced the extension of incoming call facilities to 90 million low-income feature phone users. This means that smartphone users will not get the validity extension. “With this special initiative for low-income feature phone users, Vodafone Idea customers can now continue to remain fully connected with their dear ones and access relevant, latest updates from local authorities,” according to the company. Reliance Jio to extend validity of all users Reliance Jio on the other hand announced the incoming call extension for all its users. The telco has said that the extension will not be limited to any particular group and will be provided to all its users who are not able to recharge during the lockdown. "This will not only benefit low-income users but also benefit everyone who is unable to do a recharge during these challenging times.” Jio said in a statement. Reliance Jio users can receive incoming calls till lockdown ends without a recharge

New Delhi, Apr 17 () Reliance Jio on Friday said that most of the mobile recharge outlets will be available from April 20 onward, and customers who have not been able to recharge their account during the lockdown will continue to get incoming calls on their phones.The company on March 31 had announced that users will continue to receive incoming call even after expiry of the prepaid account during the difficult situation developed due to spread of coronavirus infection."Majority recharge outlets will be available starting 20th April," Jio said, adding that customers can do recharge through online payment platforms, bank ATMs and also through associate programmes.The company has come up with JioPos Lite app which its customers can download and recharge account of other subscribers on the network. The customer who recharges the account of others will get commission of around 4 per cent.Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel have also come up with similar cash back or commission-based recharge service through app.These two firms have announced extension of prepaid validity till May 3 for customers who have not been able to recharge their accounts.Around 9 crore customers of Vodafone Idea and 3 crore of Bharti Airtel will continue getting free incoming calls till then.The government announced nationwide lockdown starting March 24 till April 14. It has been further extended till May 3.State-owned telecom operators BSNL and MTNL extended the validity period of their prepaid mobile services till April 20 and offer Rs 10 additional talktime even after zero balance.Telecom body COAI pegged the value of benefits announced by telcos for low-income users at over Rs 600 crore and said the government should support further extension of benefits through universal service obligation fund where more than Rs 51,500 crore has been lying unused. New Delhi, Mar 31 () Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio on Tuesday offered its users 100 minutes of free talktime and 100 free SMS till April 17, 10-times more than its rival have offered as help to the distressed during nationwide Covid-19 lockdown.All JioPhone users will continue to receive incoming calls post validity of their pre-paid vouchers in recognition of the difficulty some users may face in recharging.In a tweet, the company said: "10x benefits to JioPhone users when it's needed the most - 100 minutes of calls &amp; 100 sms complimentary".JioPhone users will continue to receive income calls post validity, it said with tag line 'With love, from Jio'.With sources of livelihood shut, thousands of migrant workers fleeing cities for their hometowns soon after the unprecedented 21-day lockdown a week back to contain the spread of coronavirus.Migrant daily wagers have been left with no source of livelihood as the lockdown shut businesses barring those classified essential services.Mobile phone service provides have come to the aid of such by offering extended validity of recharge vouchers, that would allow free incoming calls to continue through the lockdown, as well as some free talktime.Bharti Airtel on Monday announced an extension of the validity period of more than 8 crore pre-paid connections until April 17 and a credit of Rs 10 in talk time. For a Rs 45 recharge voucher, the Rs 10 talktime translated into just over 6 minutes of calling at the standard tariff of Rs 1.5 per minute.Vodafone Idea Ltd too on Tuesday offered a matching benefit but only to low-income feature phone users only.Jio has a substantially high percentage of users that recharge online but those who did through physical retail stores had faced issues due to the current lockdown.For such subscribers, Jio has provided alternative channels to recharge, such as UPI, ATM, SMS, Call, etc, it said.Jio said it is going the extra mile for its JioPhone users and is providing 100 minutes of calls and 100 SMS free, anywhere in the country, till 17th April 2020. Candy, who has spent his entire career at IBM, was appointed to the role in February, after helping build the unit for six years. Here's an edited version of the conversation.Dua: What's the purpose behind IBM iX? Candy: If you look at any industry, whether it's retail, CPG, banking, automotive, and if keep on peeling back the layers on the onion of what those organizations need to do in today's world, you reach this core right at the heart. And whether it's a revenue growth challenge or a decline in certain markets, the core challenge most organizations have got is around around culture and ways of working. For us, the focus is design and how design impacts business. We use the expression digital reinvention rather than transformation, because the viewpoint is that many organizations and most industries have got to fundamentally reinvent their business models, and experience needs to be at the heart of it.It's far broader than just spinning up some new websites and mobile apps. It comes down to the products that you're looking to launch, the ecosystem of partnerships and relationships that you put in place, and how you use data. So there's a much more holistic view that we would take to the reinvention of business and the role that design plays in the reinvention of business.Dua: So do you think of yourselves as being different from agencies?Candy: Yes. We don't use the word agency because it's very narrow and is associated very much with traditional <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>. And there's a far broader set of problems that organizations have to deal with in today's world.Agencies have done amazing stuff over the years on advertising, brand, and helping organizations manage messaging and interfaces for their products and services. But now they're trying to shift more into organizational change, process change, data and building technology platforms at scale because life starts to go beyond the campaigns and microsites and mobile apps. Today, it's fundamentally about how technology and data play a role into actually driving and launching new products.Dua: Why is IBM iX poised to better serve the needs of brands today? Candy: If you're a tobacco company, and you're launching new electronic vape vape products, that's a direct-to-consumer model, and very different than how they've operated in the past. The core of that business model is then driven by the technology platforms that they've got in place.You need someone that can engineer those technology platforms, has system integration skills and the right backend systems. Agencies are trying to build up some of these capabilities, but they've always been the lifeblood and the DNA of an organization like ours.We're not arrogant enough to think that we're the answer to every problem that they've got. But you need somebody who's able to help you think through business models, apply creativity in problem-solving and the experiences that you're building and also somebody who can bring together an ecosystem of different partners.And it's not just about the consumer angle, or supporting brands interacting with consumers. The tools that brands put in the hands of employees is as important, because most people will experience a brand through the people that we touch, whether that's in call centers, physical stores, an airplane, a train, or in a taxi. So it's also important to enable those people to deliver a better experience as well.We see a huge opportunity in helping businesses reinvent and be more successful through actually applying technology, data and amazingly designed experiences to both the <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> as well as the consumer base. And we have a very equal focus on both of these areas.Dua: Can you share some examples of how you're helping brands through challenges like these?Candy: So we've been working with BP for about two and a half years now on a digital change program. We're working with them on the ideation of new products and services but also new experiences that they want to put in the hands of their workshop staff and consumers. And we're rapidly iterating on those ideas, by having the workshops and the end consumers involved in that design process all the way through. At Vodafone, we're helping them build an acceleration hub. The company has moved a bunch of their people into these agile squads, focused around different threats, use cases, problems that they want to solve for consumers or employees. We're helping them drive new design thinking-based approaches, agile ways of working into these multidisciplinary teams and effectively coaching them in the new skills and new ways of working to drive those outcomes faster. A lot of the work we're doing with companies like BP, Orange and Vodafone is helping them not only take an idea through to execution, but also helping them scale it onto the enterprise level.Dua: But creativity hasn't traditionally been a focus for tech companies like IBM and other consultancies. Is going down the acquisition route the only way to go?Candy: In certain markets where we've wanted to accelerate because of growth opportunities with clients or because of a cultural fit, we've made acquisitions. But actually building a creative and design culture in a company is far broader than just making a few acquisitions. We have built that foundation over the last five years within the company through several ways.We have made a huge investment in organically building a design culture and the practices of design within the company. We have a corporate-wide design function and have invested in real estate, building studios to put in place methods and approaches. We've built out our design thinking practices. We've now trained over 140,000 people in the company around design thinking. We've also brought in a huge number of creatives and designers into the organization.Dua: There are enough proclamations of the agency model being dead. What does the advertising model of the future look like?Candy: The industry still has still got some evolving, growing to do. I look at some of those award categories and the type of work that gets awarded and I ask 'really?' What has actually changed? How has that delivered shareholder value for the company? How has it actually changed the lives of a customer or business partner? What sustainable impact has it had on society?We have got to start thinking more about the role that digital experience and design and creative play in actually helping reinventing business models. We need to be looking at how tools make our lives a little bit easier, helps you get home a little bit earlier, takes friction out of your life. I don't think the industry is quite there yet.Dua: Do consultancies have conflicts of interest with multiple clients in the same industries?Candy: It's fascinating that in the agency world that's always been the mindset. But that rule, that concept of if I work for one company and industry, I'm not going to work for any of the others has never been in the DNA of consulting organizations.We may sign a contract with a client in a market where the commercial terms that they want us to adhere to are pretty strict. We have situations like that, especially in the intellectual property ownership space. But we lay it out in the commercial terms and contracts that we will be very careful around IP ownership and the Chinese walls, but not to the point where we just cut off an entire business line.Dua: What is the one thing you're doing that agencies aren't?Candy: There's a whole bunch of stuff that agencies do that we don't do, and things that we have no intention of doing because we don't believe that's where the world's going. One thing we're focusing on is how we apply emerging technology to solve problems.We have a partnership with Apple, where we're working with them to transform experiences for enterprise. Earlier this year for example, we launched something called Core ML with Apple, which is the ability to run AI services locally on the iOS device.In terms of an application, think about an app for mechanics fixing bank ATM machines. You take off the cover of the machine and are looking inside, and are able to fireup your app. The camera is then able to basically diagnose problem using AR effectively and deliver advice back to the mechanic on what to do. So the technology can make jobs easier, improve productivity and improve experience.Dua: What are some technologies that you're bullish on?For us, the application of emerging technology, blockchain, AI, and some of the stuff that we're doing in the media space are things we're excited about. When you look at that programmatic media space, do we want to get into programmatic media buying? No we don't. We actually think that whole space is ripe for reinvention and transformation and some of the technologies like blockchain combined with analytics and AI will actually transform the whole industry.That is a more pressing problem that we need to help the world solve. It kind of goes back to purpose, and IBM's single purpose to be essential, essential to how the world works.
