It’s still three months for the telecom major <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> India's $1-billion IT outsourcing contract to expire, and its current tech vendor <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> is fighting a tough battle to hold on to the huge contract. This is because Vodafone is said to be considering some options, including branching out some portions of the contract to other service providers, three people aware of the matter told ET. 
 
One of IBM's largest telecom contracts in Asia, the contract is set to expire in June end, which is why the company is aggressively chasing a renewed contract even if they have to sacrifice some margins. 
 
"Even if <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/it-services/IBM-inks-deal-with-VMWare-tries-to-bolster-cloud-credentials/articleshow/51096444.cms" target="_blank">IBM</a> does retain most of the contract, the renewed deal will come at the cost of margins. They are being forced to fight on price as well," said one of the sources. As of now, Vodafone hands out $190-200 million of annual business to IBM. 
 
When contacted via email, an IBM spokeswoman said that the company "does not comment on rumour and/or speculation nor do we comment on client confidential contracts".

IBM is battling hard to save Vodafone’s $1-billion outsourcing deal

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vodafone">Vodafone</a>, one of India’s top telecom operators, is now in talks with the software major <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Vodafone-Indias-CIO-quits-ahead-of-1-billion-deal-renewal/articleshow/48453930.cms">renewal of a $1 billion outsourcing contract</a> that will expire in June next year. 
 
The mobile network operator outsources services like management of application development and the network services in the IT sector. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IBM">IBM</a>, which is trying to retain the deal, is also planning to sell its data analytics solutions to Vodafone, as published in an Economic Times report, adding that companies like Wipro, TCS, Infosys and <keyword id="43217" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra">Tech Mahindra</keyword> are also under consideration for the deal. 
 
Requesting anonymity, one of the two people familiar with the development said, "It hasn't given out the request for proposals to these vendors as of now. But they will in coming months gauge their capabilities and decide whether any of them can provide best value for money and could deliver end-to-end services, besides taking Vodafone IT to the next level." However, there was no response from Vodafone in this regards. 
 As per the industry experts, Vodafone will prefer to renew the entire deal with IBM, but it is evaluating all options as the company is not in a situation to chop-up the agreement the way <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> recently did. 
 
Sanchit Vir Gogia, chief analyst &amp; CEO at Greyhound Research, said, "Bharti Airtel is leveraging these newer delivery models to better manage cost and time spent on servicing existing infrastructure and applications. Telcos globally are exploring, so should Vodafone." 
 
For IBM, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel+">Airtel </a>contract was a landmark deal in terms of size and was also the first IT outsourcing order from India's telecom sector. Apart from Vodafone, IBM will be trying to renew an outsourcing deal worth $800 million-$900 million with India's third-ranked telco Idea Cellular, which comes up for renewal in 2019-20.

Vodafone India has a new ally in IBM for a whopping $1 bn deal

As per a recent revelation,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vodafone+india"> Vodafone India</a>’s chief information officer <keyword id="312129" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anthony-Thomas">Anthony Thomas</keyword> has tendered his resignation informing the firm about his plans to pursue other opportunities. As per the media reports, the move came months ahead of the expiration of Vodafone and <keyword id="10875" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IBM">IBM</keyword> pact. 
 
Requesting anonymity, officials have revealed that the $1-billion outsourcing contract between Vodafone and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IBM+">IBM </a>is set to expire in a couple of months and talks are on to renew the deal. 
 
An official email has also been sent to all <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vodafone">Vodafone </a>employees on Wednesday confirming Thomas’s exit from the company but the name that will replace Thomas as CIO is yet to come up. 
 
The mail sent to the employees reads, "Anthony Thomas, chief information officer, India, has decided to pursue career opportunities outside Vodafone. His last day at Vodafone will be September 15, 2015." 
 
The spokesperson, however, didn’t comment on the matter yet. 
 
Thomas joined Vodafone in April 2012 and played a key role in creating a new centralized IT structure within the company during his tenure. During his stint at Vodafone, the company also rolled out several new technology initiatives including the company's micro-financing service m-pesa and also a new data warehouse. 
 
Prior to Vodafone, Thomas had worked with companies such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Citigroup">Citigroup</a>, Ernst &amp; Young (E&amp;Y) and Intelligroup Inc.

Vodafone India’s CIO quits ahead of $1-billion deal renewal

There is an opportunity for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=software+exporters+">software exporters</a> in India as about $250 billion worth of deals in the sector are set to be renewed over the course of next 36 months. 
 Several outsourcing contracts worth at least $1 billion each from companies such as US retailer Gap and <keyword id="120748" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="British-Telecom">British telecom</keyword> firm <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vodafone+">Vodafone</a> are coming up for renewal in the next one year. 
 
Therefore, home-grown software exporters such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tata+Consultancy+Services+%28TCS%29+">Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)</a> and <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> are preparing themselves to grab the deals from incumbent multinational rivals such as IBM and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hewlett-Packard+">Hewlett-Packard</a> and increase market share over these companies. 
 
Data from outsourcing advisory ISG suggests that at least six such deals will expire in 2016 and another nine deals with a total contract value of at least $500 million each from customers such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Arcelor-Mittal+">Arcelor-Mittal</a> and <keyword id="195234" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="BAE-Systems">BAE Systems</keyword> will also come up for renewal during this period. 
 The increasing number of contract expirations each year directly results from specific market trends. “We've seen the number of outsourcing transactions increase dramatically over time. At the same time the average duration of contracts has declined. As a consequence, contract expirations are occurring at a faster rate," said <keyword id="267192" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dinesh-Goel">Dinesh Goel</keyword>, partner and India head at ISG. 
 
Even as IBM and HP are expected to strive to renew these contracts, India's top outsourcing firms fancy their chances, having already grabbed significant market share from their multinational rivals over the past five years. 
 
According to another ISG report, Indian IT firms increased their share of the market to 27.1% during January-June, from 23.6% a year ago. This again came at the cost of European rivals such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Capgemini+">Capgemini</a> and <keyword id="327292" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Atos">Atos</keyword>. 
 Executives from both Indian and multinational firms are focusing on <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword>'s $1 billion contract with IBM which will expire early next year. It is being reported that preliminary discussions to renew the contract have already been started. 
 
"There is no question that incumbency isn't what it used to be - the non-incumbent win rate on competitive restructuring and renewal deals stands at over 60%," said Goel, adding India-heritage firms have been the significant beneficiaries of this trend as a winning provider. 
 
Indian IT firms have aggressively snatched large contracts by adopting tactics such as heavy upfront payments while bidding for large billion-dollar outsourcing deals and also using price to undercut rivals. 
 
At a time when investors are worried about the economic slowdown in China triggering a global meltdown and with technology spending set to drop at least 5.5% this year, India's top IT services firms will chase these upcoming deals even more aggressively, executives said.

With more than <a href="https://adage.com/article/news/consultancies-rising/308845/">$3 billion in revenue</a> and 10,000 employees across the globe, IBM iX is one among the pack that has quickly established itself as a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-ix-is-cutting-out-ad-agencies-by-bringing-clients-in-through-consultancy-2017-4">force to be reckoned with.</a>Business Insider recently caught up with Matt Candy, IBM iX's global leader. Candy, who has spent his entire career at IBM, was appointed to the role in February, after helping build the unit for six years. Here's an edited version of the conversation.Dua: What's the purpose behind IBM iX? Candy: If you look at any industry, whether it's retail, CPG, banking, automotive, and if keep on peeling back the layers on the onion of what those organizations need to do in today's world, you reach this core right at the heart. And whether it's a revenue growth challenge or a decline in certain markets, the core challenge most organizations have got is around around culture and ways of working. For us, the focus is design and how design impacts business. We use the expression digital reinvention rather than transformation, because the viewpoint is that many organizations and most industries have got to fundamentally reinvent their business models, and experience needs to be at the heart of it.It's far broader than just spinning up some new websites and mobile apps. It comes down to the products that you're looking to launch, the ecosystem of partnerships and relationships that you put in place, and how you use data. So there's a much more holistic view that we would take to the reinvention of business and the role that design plays in the reinvention of business.Dua: So do you think of yourselves as being different from agencies?Candy: Yes. We don't use the word agency because it's very narrow and is associated very much with traditional <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>. And there's a far broader set of problems that organizations have to deal with in today's world.Agencies have done amazing stuff over the years on advertising, brand, and helping organizations manage messaging and interfaces for their products and services. But now they're trying to shift more into organizational change, process change, data and building technology platforms at scale because life starts to go beyond the campaigns and microsites and mobile apps. Today, it's fundamentally about how technology and data play a role into actually driving and launching new products.Dua: Why is IBM iX poised to better serve the needs of brands today? Candy: If you're a tobacco company, and you're launching new electronic vape vape products, that's a direct-to-consumer model, and very different than how they've operated in the past. The core of that business model is then driven by the technology platforms that they've got in place.You need someone that can engineer those technology platforms, has system integration skills and the right backend systems. Agencies are trying to build up some of these capabilities, but they've always been the lifeblood and the DNA of an organization like ours.We're not arrogant enough to think that we're the answer to every problem that they've got. But you need somebody who's able to help you think through business models, apply creativity in problem-solving and the experiences that you're building and also somebody who can bring together an ecosystem of different partners.And it's not just about the consumer angle, or supporting brands interacting with consumers. The tools that brands put in the hands of employees is as important, because most people will experience a brand through the people that we touch, whether that's in call centers, physical stores, an airplane, a train, or in a taxi. So it's also important to enable those people to deliver a better experience as well.We see a huge opportunity in helping businesses reinvent and be more successful through actually applying technology, data and amazingly designed experiences to both the <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> as well as the consumer base. And we have a very equal focus on both of these areas.Dua: Can you share some examples of how you're helping brands through challenges like these?Candy: So we've been working with BP for about two and a half years now on a digital change program. We're working with them on the ideation of new products and services but also new experiences that they want to put in the hands of their workshop staff and consumers. And we're rapidly iterating on those ideas, by having the workshops and the end consumers involved in that design process all the way through. At Vodafone, we're helping them build an acceleration hub. The company has moved a bunch of their people into these agile squads, focused around different threats, use cases, problems that they want to solve for consumers or employees. We're helping them drive new design thinking-based approaches, agile ways of working into these multidisciplinary teams and effectively coaching them in the new skills and new ways of working to drive those outcomes faster. A lot of the work we're doing with companies like BP, Orange and Vodafone is helping them not only take an idea through to execution, but also helping them scale it onto the enterprise level.Dua: But creativity hasn't traditionally been a focus for tech companies like IBM and other consultancies. Is going down the acquisition route the only way to go?Candy: In certain markets where we've wanted to accelerate because of growth opportunities with clients or because of a cultural fit, we've made acquisitions. But actually building a creative and design culture in a company is far broader than just making a few acquisitions. We have built that foundation over the last five years within the company through several ways.We have made a huge investment in organically building a design culture and the practices of design within the company. We have a corporate-wide design function and have invested in real estate, building studios to put in place methods and approaches. We've built out our design thinking practices. We've now trained over 140,000 people in the company around design thinking. We've also brought in a huge number of creatives and designers into the organization.Dua: There are enough proclamations of the agency model being dead. What does the advertising model of the future look like?Candy: The industry still has still got some evolving, growing to do. I look at some of those award categories and the type of work that gets awarded and I ask 'really?' What has actually changed? How has that delivered shareholder value for the company? How has it actually changed the lives of a customer or business partner? What sustainable impact has it had on society?We have got to start thinking more about the role that digital experience and design and creative play in actually helping reinventing business models. We need to be looking at how tools make our lives a little bit easier, helps you get home a little bit earlier, takes friction out of your life. I don't think the industry is quite there yet.Dua: Do consultancies have conflicts of interest with multiple clients in the same industries?Candy: It's fascinating that in the agency world that's always been the mindset. But that rule, that concept of if I work for one company and industry, I'm not going to work for any of the others has never been in the DNA of consulting organizations.We may sign a contract with a client in a market where the commercial terms that they want us to adhere to are pretty strict. We have situations like that, especially in the intellectual property ownership space. But we lay it out in the commercial terms and contracts that we will be very careful around IP ownership and the Chinese walls, but not to the point where we just cut off an entire business line.Dua: What is the one thing you're doing that agencies aren't?Candy: There's a whole bunch of stuff that agencies do that we don't do, and things that we have no intention of doing because we don't believe that's where the world's going. One thing we're focusing on is how we apply emerging technology to solve problems.We have a partnership with Apple, where we're working with them to transform experiences for enterprise. Earlier this year for example, we launched something called Core ML with Apple, which is the ability to run AI services locally on the iOS device.In terms of an application, think about an app for mechanics fixing bank ATM machines. You take off the cover of the machine and are looking inside, and are able to fireup your app. The camera is then able to basically diagnose problem using AR effectively and deliver advice back to the mechanic on what to do. So the technology can make jobs easier, improve productivity and improve experience.Dua: What are some technologies that you're bullish on?For us, the application of emerging technology, blockchain, AI, and some of the stuff that we're doing in the media space are things we're excited about. When you look at that programmatic media space, do we want to get into programmatic media buying? No we don't. We actually think that whole space is ripe for reinvention and transformation and some of the technologies like blockchain combined with analytics and AI will actually transform the whole industry.That is a more pressing problem that we need to help the world solve. It kind of goes back to purpose, and IBM's single purpose to be essential, essential to how the world works. The billion dollar contracts are becoming rare and it is a tough fight. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+IT+companies&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian IT companies</a> such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TCS&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TCS</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=infosys&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Infosys</a>, etc are back in the renewal of contracts battle and are eying deals worth $100 billion. 
 
The renewal contracts for 2016-17 will pour in from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=deutsche+bank&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Deutsche Bank</a>, UBS, Mitsubishi and Vodafone. 
 The research and outsourcing advisory firm ISG stated the renewals are of prime importance for <keyword id="6357549" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-IT-companies">Indian IT companies</keyword> because big customers like AstraZeneca, Lowe's and JPMorgan Chase are going for insource software projects, making big billion contracts rare. 
 As per ISG, large technology customers such as British utilities firm National Grid, <keyword id="6357341" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deutsche-Bank">Deutsche Bank</keyword>, UK's Network Rail and Japan's Mitsubishi currently have billion-dollar engagements with clients such as IBM, CSC, Hitachi and Carillion, all of which will come up for renewal. 
 
"The competitive intensity is going up in the industry and hence the pressure on pricing levels will continue. The scope and construct of the deals are also changing with infrastructure delivery models becoming hybrid (mix of cloud and on premise) quite frequently," said Dinesh Goel, partner and India head at ISG. 
 
It is noteworthy that Infosys is on a momentum as it reported three consecutive quarters of outperformance. 
 
"Our deal wins have improved dramatically and we are approaching $800-900 million a quarter in large deals. That's more than double of what we used to do," Infosys’ <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vishal+sikka&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Vishal Sikka</a> had stated recently.

Battle for renewal of contracts is back; Indian IT companies eye deals over $100 billion

<ul><li>NITES union has lodged a complaint against <keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="infosys" source="Orion">Infosys</keyword> seeking removal of their newly imposed <keyword id="1905436" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="non-compete-clause" source="Orion">non-compete clause</keyword>.</li><li>The clause bans the employees to work in the competitors for six months after they quit the company.</li><li>The companies included in their competitor list are — Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services (<keyword id="6357150" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tcs" source="Orion">TCS</keyword>), IBM, Cognizant, and <keyword id="10862" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wipro" source="Orion">Wipro</keyword>.</li></ul>An information technology (IT) union has reportedly filed a complaint against the Indian multinational IT major Infosys, on April 20. The <keyword id="13658159" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nascent-information-technology-employees-senate" source="Orion">Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate</keyword> (NITES) union is seeking to remove the non-compete clause, which states that the employees cannot work for the competitor companies for six months after leaving the company. The clause also forbids the employees to join the workforce of the clients they had worked for in the last 12 months before quitting, according to the letter to minister <keyword id="1850634" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bhupender-yadav" source="Orion">Bhupender Yadav</keyword>. The clause includes these companies in their competitor list — Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), IBM, Cognizant, and Wipro. “For the period of six months after leaving Infosys, employees will not — accept any offer of employment from any customer, (with whom I worked) in the twelve months immediately preceding my termination or accept any offer of employment from a Named Competitor of Infosys, if my employment with such Named Competitor would involve me having to work with a Customer with whom I had worked in the twelve (12) months immediately preceding the termination of my employment with Infosys,” the clause says according to the letter. The letter was written by the NITES union president, Harpreet Saluja, to the minister stating that the clause violates Section 27 of the Contract Act. “They are likely to affect the employee’s means of procuring a livelihood for himself and his family. Hence the company should be stopped from enforcing it,” read the letter. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="90826046" title="Infosys is looking to hire 50,000 employees this year while expecting the attrition rate to come down" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> Recently, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/enterprise/news/infosys-is-looking-to-hire-50000-employees-this-year-while-expecting-the-attrition-rate-to-come-down/articleshow/90826046.cms">Infosys</a> also witnessed the highest level of attrition rate in the company as compared to its competitors. Its attrition worsened in the January-March quarter reaching 27.7% from 25.5% in the previous quarter. However, the management at Infosys said the attrition rate has come down on a quarterly basis as against the LTM (last twelve months) data disclosed. Moreover, it expects the attrition rate to decline gradually as it also kicks off hikes from April 1. The company is looking to hire more than 50,000 employees in FY23 as against the 85,000 hired in FY22. Infosys has an employee base of 3.14 lakh, which is half of what TCS has. The company’s net profit for the March quarter rose about 12% to ₹5,686 crore with revenue growth of 22.7% year-on-year at ₹32,276 crore.
