Revenue of telecom service providers through wireless services is likely to fall in the first quarter of FY20-21 due to the nationwide lockdown, according to a report by Emkay Global Financial Services. The report noted that the lockdown delayed recharges by low ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) prepaid subscribers on account of the reverse labour migration and impact on income levels along with curbed subscriber additions, SIM consolidation and absence of international roaming revenues. "We expect ARPU to decline sequentially in Q1FY21 after healthy growth in Q4FY20. Bharti (<keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>) and VIL (<keyword id="1553175" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-Idea">Vodafone Idea</keyword>) are likely to see 5 per cent quarter-on-quarter (qoq) fall in ARPU. Home broadband to see a healthy increase in new connections, boosted by the lockdown," it said. Subscriber addition shall moderate due to the lack of smartphone sales in April and early May, the report said adding that the reverse migration could lead to subscriber loss for the industry due to delayed or no recharges. Further, it noted that cost savings are expected from marketing, channel margins and other admin costs. Network opex shall continue to rise on increased utilisations. In case of Reliance Jio, the report said that "partial flow-through of the Dec 2019 tariff hike in Q1FY21 would get offset by lockdown-led delayed recharges, resulting in wireless revenues growth of 1 per cent qoq". Lower contribution from international roaming would also restrict ARPU for Jio as compared to peers, it said. "We project subscriber additions to be compressed at 6 million and ARPU to decline 2 per cent qoq, negatively impacted by the lockdown. Similar to Bharti and VIL, subscriber acquisition cost shall fall, leading to 114bps qoq expansion in EBITDA margin." Jet Airways Cash-strapped Jet Airways on Saturday approved the resolution plan submitted by London-based Kalrock Capital and UAE-based businessmen Murari Lal Jalan to acquire the airline. Sun Pharma The drug major Sun Pharma in its Annual Report for 2019-20 said the company is looking to expand its speciality business across different regions like Greater China and Japan after having established presence in the US market. The shares of Sun Pharma ended 0.72% higher on Friday. Berger Paints India’s second-largest paint maker, Berger Paints said that despite the coronavirus uncertainty its capital expenditure for this fiscal year remains unaffected and will be the same as last year. The major investment will be in its upcoming Sandila plant near Lucknow of around Rs 260 crore, and the plant is expected to be operational from 2022 onwards. Vodafone Idea The telecom regulator TRAI has decided to drop proceedings against Vodafone Idea in priority plan matter after the telco withdrew contentious claims on faster speed and modified its offering. New Delhi, Mar 18 () Telecom shares came crashing on Wednesday, led by Vodafone Idea which plunged 35 per cent after the Supreme Court pulled up the Centre and telcos for doing self-assessment or reassessment of the AGR dues fixed by the apex court. Vodafone Idea plunged 34.85 per cent to close at Rs 3.16 on the BSE. During the day, it dived 40 per cent to Rs 2.91. Bharti Airtel also declined 6.14 per cent to close at Rs 426.20 after falling 9.86 per cent to Rs 409.30 during the day. Both the companies erased their early gains. The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up the Centre and telecom companies for doing self-assessment or reassessment of the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues fixed by the apex court in its verdict given on October 24 last year. The apex court, which was also anguished by frequently published newspaper articles on the AGR issue said all managing directors of telecom companies will be personally responsible and will be held for contempt of court for any such future newspaper articles. The BSE telecom index plunged most by 9.48 per cent as all its components cracked including Bharti Infratel which tanked 22.62 per cent. "The global mayhem combined rising coronavirus cases in India triggered the initial fall, which further worsened with the Supreme Court's stance on AGR dues," Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking Ltd said. Telecom shares crack; Vodafone Idea plunges 35 pc

Previous antibody responses to other, harmless coronaviruses may confer <keyword id="48619" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="immunity" source="Orion">immunity</keyword> against <keyword id="8858345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SARS-CoV-2" source="Orion">SARS-CoV-2</keyword>, the virus that causes <keyword id="8763838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covid-19" source="Orion">Covid-19</keyword>, according to a new study. The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, showed that people infected with Covid had lower levels of antibodies against coronaviruses that cause common colds compared to uninfected people. In addition, people with high levels of antibodies against harmless coronaviruses were less likely to have been hospitalised after catching Covid. aceOur study shows that a strong antibody response to human coronaviruses increases the level of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. So someone who has gained immunity to harmless coronaviruses is therefore also better protected against severe SARS-CoV-2 infections," said Alexandra Trkola, head of the Institute of Medical Virology at <keyword id="174825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-zurich" source="Orion">University of Zurich</keyword> (UZH). This type of immune response is referred to as cross-reactivity, and it also occurs with T-cell responses, the additional line of the immune system in the defense against infections. In the study, the team used a specially developed assay to analyse antibody levels against four other human coronaviruses in 825 serum samples taken before Covid emerged. They also examined 389 samples from donors infected with Covid. Combining these analyses with computer-based models enabled the team to precisely predict how well the antibodies would bind to and neutralise invading viruses. People get fully protected against Covid shortly after they have recovered from an infection or have received an effective vaccination. This is when antibody levels against the virus are still very high. As these levels drop over time, infection is no longer prevented, but the immunological memory quickly reactivates the body's defenses, the production of antibodies as well as the T-cell defense. "Of course, immune responses targeting SARS-CoV-2 that are mounted by the memory cells are far more effective than cross-reactive responses. But even though the protection isn't absolute, cross-reactive immune responses shorten the infection and reduce its severity. And this is exactly what is also achieved through vaccination, just much, much more efficiently," Trkola said. It is, however, not yet known whether this cross-reactivity also works in the opposite direction. Whether immunity to Covid -- achieved through vaccination, for example -- also offers protection against other human coronaviruses still needs to be elucidated. <keyword id="6368596" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="boston">Boston</keyword>, Scientists have charted the first atlas showing how the <keyword id="1231121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="genetic-material">genetic material</keyword> of the novel coronavirus interacts with the <keyword id="22999" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="proteins">proteins</keyword> in human cells, an advance which may provide a starting point for the development of new treatments against COVID-19. According to the <keyword id="6354645" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="researchers">researchers</keyword>, including those from Broad Institute in the US, one of the most urgent tasks is to understand all the <keyword id="8529201" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="molecular-interactions">molecular interactions</keyword> between the virus and the cells it infects. They explained that a detailed understanding of these interactions will help identify the processes in host cells which favour the multiplication of the virus, and the ones which activate the host immune system. While the SARS-CoV-2 virus uses host proteins to replicate, the scientists said until now, there has been no detailed understanding of all the proteins occurring in human cells which interact with the viral genetic material -- its RNA. In the current research, published in the journal Nature Microbiology, the scientists created the first global atlas of direct interactions between the SARS-CoV-2 RNA and the proteins present in human cells. Based on the findings, the researchers also identified important regulators of viral replication. The scientists infected human cells with the novel coronavirus, purified the viral RNA and identified the proteins bound to it. "In this particular case, we were able to perform quantitative measurements to identify the strongest specific binding partners," said study co-author Mathias Munschauer from <keyword id="10498406" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-helmholtz-institute">the Helmholtz Institute</keyword> for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) in Germany. The scientists said the atlas of RNA-protein interactions offers unique insights into SARS-CoV-2 infections, enabling the systematic breakdown of factors influencing the replication of the virus, and host defense strategies -- a crucial prerequisite for the development of new therapeutics. From the results, the scientists identified 18 host proteins that play an important role during SARS-CoV-2 infection, and found 20 small molecules that may inhibit these proteins. They believe the two proteins CNBP and LARP1 are particularly interesting. The researchers also identified target sites in these proteins that could be used to inhibit the replication of the virus. According to Munschauer, the characterization of LARP1 as an antiviral factor is a major finding. "The way LARP1 binds to viral RNA is very interesting, because it is similar to the way LARP1 regulates certain cellular messenger RNAs that we already know. This in turn provides insights into possible mechanisms of action," he added. According to the scientists, three out of four small molecules they tested inhibited viral replication in different human cell types -- findings that may open up new ways to treat COVID-19. According to the study, published in the journal PNAS, the new technology may help overcome bottlenecks in supplies and laboratory personnel which have led to long waiting times for COVID-19 test results in several parts of the world amidst the ongoing pandemic. "If such a device and test were available, we could test for COVID-19 at public events, auditoriums, large gatherings and potentially even at home for self-testing. The results could be sent back to the appropriate public health system for coordination," said Rashid Bashir, a professor of bioengineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in the US. In one of the common methods to test for the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, healthcare workers take a sample from patients with a long nasopharyngeal swab, which is put into a substance called viral transport media, and send to a lab for extracting, isolating, and multiplying the viral genetic material, the scientists said. This viral RNA multiplication process, called RT-PCR, requires several temperature fluctuation cycles, specialised equipment, and trained personnel, said Brain Cunningham, another co-author of the study. In the current research, the scientists used a simpler process to analyse the viral transport media, called LAMP, which bypasses the RNA extraction and purification steps. "LAMP only needs one temperature -- 65 C -- so it is much easier to control," said Anurup Ganguli, the first author of the study. "Also, LAMP works more robustly than PCR, especially when there are contaminants in the test sample. We can just briefly heat the sample, break open the virus, and detect the genetic sequence that specifically identifies SARS-CoV-2," Ganguli said. When the researchers compared the LAMP assay with PCR, they found the results were in agreement, following which they documented the sensitivity and specificity of the LAMP test. The scientists then incorporated the assay onto a small 3D-printed cartridge that has two input slots for syringes -- one for the sample-containing viral transport media, one for the LAMP chemicals. Once the two syringe components are injected, they the react within the cartridge, the study noted. "We use modern, high speed additive manufacturing to make these cartridges. The entire thing can be quickly scaled up to hundreds of thousands of tests," said Bill King, another co-author of the study from the University of Illinois. "Production scale-up is typically the biggest obstacle for commercial applications of microfluidic cartridges, and we can overcome that obstacle using this new approach. Modern additive manufacturing is elastic and scalable, and it can be ramped up very quickly compared with legacy manufacturing technologies," King said. According to the researchers, the cartridge can be inserted into a hand-held portable instrument with a heating chamber, which heats the cartridge to 65 degrees Celsius for the duration of the reaction, and a smartphone cradle is in place for reading the results. In approximately 30 minutes, a positive result will emit fluorescent light, they said. "The reader illuminates the liquid compartments with light from blue LEDs, while the phone's rear-facing camera records a movie of the green fluorescent light being generated," Cunningham explained. The scientists noted that they are currently assessing whether the assay would work with saliva samples to eliminate the need for nasopharyngeal swabs.
