Virat has been signed as brand ambassador of many brands since cricket has mass appeal, and fans worship him for his expertise, consistent performance and excellence in all three formats of cricket. However, his following is dependent on a lot of factors besides his professional excellence. Thus, while we agree that brands chase numbers, Virat’s brand value may not be materially impacted by the decrease in RCB’s value. He had a share of 15% in ad volumes. MS Dhoni followed Singh with 9% share. Virat Kohli’s ad share went down from 5% to 4% this year. New entrant this year was Salman Khan with 7% share of ad volumes, 3% more than Kohli. The report stated that 3 out of top 5 overall celebrities were common in 29 matches of both IPL 14 and IPL 13. Dhoni, Kohli and Rohit Sharma were common sports celebrities in IPL 14 and IPL 13. The Top 5 categories contributed more than 33% of overall ad volumes compared to 40% in the previous edition and 30+ new categories appeared in 29 matches of IPL 14 compared to IPL 13. Among the new categories, Securities/Sharebroking Organization topped the list followed by Fans. <div type="image" title="top brands ipl" msid="82518006" hostid="261"></div> Dream11 had the biggest share of 5% in ad volumes this year, followed by UPstox at 4%. The top 5 brands Sporta Technologies, Epx Uptech, Just Dial, Parle Agro, and FX Mart contributed a 21% share of ad volumes during 29 matches of IPL 14 as compared to 24% in the previous season. Ecom-Gaming, which was on top in both IPL seasons, contributed 10% share of ad volumes this year followed by Ecom-Education (6%), Aerated Soft Drink (6%), Ecom-Wallets (6%), and Pan Masala (5%).

Well, both seem to have done equally well in the annual IPL ad recall research of the Indian Institute of Human Brands (IIHB) conducted ten days after the start of the League this year. The research polled 879 respondents in the age-group of 18-35 years (M=481, F=398) across India. The interviews were conducted telephonically. Dream11 was the most spontaneously recalled brand in this year’s survey, which possibly also helped enhance both the brand equity and recall of MS Dhoni who anchored the 12-ad series for the brand as its ambassador and protagonist. Jio Fiber, with multiple IPL teams featured with an effervescent Ranveer Singh gyrating with a sing-song brand message, came in second on recall in the research, also helping the celebrity endorser to considerably strengthen his personal recall. Byju’s was the most spontaneously recalled brand on the IPL last year; though its celebrity endorser Shah Rukh Khan trailed behind other celebrities. Virat Kohli, as expected, did well on recall too, and came third in the recall rankings. Salman Khan did surprisingly well in this year’s survey and came in at No. 4, ahead of Rishabh Pant, Rahul Dravid, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Saurav Ganguly who followed in that sequence. Ajay Devgn, Sachin Tendulkar, Shikhar Dhawan, Shah Rukh Khan, Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Ayushmann Khurrana and Akshay Kumar, on the other hand, had very few mentions and scored very poorly on respondent recall. There were sporadic mentions of Virender Sehwag and Priyanka Chopra too. In the last survey conducted in October 2020, MS Dhoni had the highest spontaneous recall as a celebrity endorser. Virat Kohli was a not-so-close second. Akshay Kumar was at rank 3; Ayushmann Khurrana at rank 4. “MS Dhoni and Ranveer Singh had a disproportionate share of visibility and recall in the IPL research we just conducted. This was in sync with the ultra-high recall of the brands they respectively endorse”, said Dr. Sandeep Goyal, Chief Mentor of IIHB. “It is interesting nevertheless to note that brands without celebrities like Phone Pe, Byju’s and others too have done well wherever media investments are heavy”. IIHB team used its proprietorial CELEBAR tool based on Celebrity Brand Association &amp; Recognition to assign a metric score to each celebrity and associated brand. His spontaneous recall was an unusually high 82%. His association with Dream 11 was also very constant at 79% from the last edition. He got 9% association with IPL/Star TV, 8% brand association with Indigo Paints, 6% with Orient Fans for Orient Fans and Livfast Solar. 2% recall came from SunFeast Yippee. So, most of Dhoni’s brand goodness got hijacked by Dream 11, much like last year. If Dhoni had only been endorsing Dream 11, his CELEBAR score would have been near 100, given his strong association with that one brand, to almost the relative exclusion of the other brands he endorses. Ranveer achieved a CELEBAR score of 86, empirically almost equal to that of MS Dhoni. But his association was more democratically spread with Jio Fiber at 56%, JD mart at 48%, My11 Circle at 22% and Bingo at 18%. Names of some other brands were mentioned by respondents but these were filtered out as they were not part of the IPL broadcast. Both MS Dhoni and Ranveer gained massively also on account of their main brands spending disproportionately large amounts of media monies which made them exponentially more visible than other competing celebrities. Virat Kohli trailed far behind the Top 2. His score of 45 on CELEBAR is mostly derived by his 94% association with MRF tyres. Bluestar is in low single digits on association. Salman Khan at a CELEBAR of 38, owes 82% recall to Rajshree elaichi and the balance to Pepsi. Rishabh Pant climbed up interestingly to No. 5 on the strength of his JSW appearances. Varun Dhawan had 76% of his recall from Lux Cozi and much lower from Frooti. Alia owed most of her recall also to Frooti with scattered mentions of Dark Fantasy. Interestingly, the IPL seems to be running no/few ads with Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, and even with cricketers Rohit Sharma or KL Rahul or Hardik Pandya, or the media weightages behind those ads were too insignificant to be noticed by viewers. The Cred ad for Rahul Dravid was spontaneously recalled by 17% respondents but only 2% remembered Jackie Shroff and only 1% mentioned Kumar Sanu for the same brand. Mutual Funds (AMFI) ads had 22% recall but most respondents got the protagonists mixed up, with the most attributing the messaging to Dhoni and Kohli. Dream 11’s association with multiple cricketers was mentioned by many respondents but most were not sure if they remembered current creatives. Only the connect with MS Dhoni was unambiguous. Despite heavy media weights, Vimal elaichi ad featuring Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan had only an 8% recall. Netmeds with Kareena Kapoor and Renuka Shahane had a good 9% recall. Priyanka Chopra’s Appy Fizz and Katrina’s Slice were almost not recalled. Hema Malini managed 3% recall on Kent RO. Randhir Kapoor’s Asian Paints managed 4% while Kareena Kapoor’s and Pankaj Tripathi’s Berger creatives both got below 1%. Ayushmann was remembered by less than 1% in Urban Company. Gajaraj Rao was mentioned in less than 1% for Voltas. Unacademy featuring Sunil Gavaskar and Harsha Bhogle too scored poorly at 2%. Gamezy featuring KL Rahul got less than 1% recall. On the ads without celebrities, the most remembered were Phone Pe (32%), Byju’s (31%), Vivo (22%), One Plus (21%), Groww (20%), Upstox (20%), Kia (19%), MPL (18%), Bisleri (11%), PharmEasy (11%), Thums Up(9%), Coca Cola (6%), Renault Kiger (6%), Tata Safari (6%), Skoda (3%), Ajio (3%), Dark Fantasy (2%), LikedIn (2%), Raymond (2%) and Tuborg (1%). As more gets added to the broadcast as the IPL progresses, both standings of celebrities and recall of brands may change.

However, have we really spent time with each other? We have swapped devices from mobiles to laptops, jumped from Houseparty calls with friends to endless Zoom meetings with our colleagues, played Among Us to lull us to sleep and watched Netflix even at the dinner table. After the pandemic, we have turned to smartphones for entertainment and survival and it has become our lifeline. This excessive usage of smartphones has led to addiction among some users and is also having an adverse impact on relationships. Just like the disclaimers on cigarette packaging remind its users that smoking is injurious to health, phone makers may now have to point out that devices are injurious to relationships. While Netflix’s Social Dilemma released earlier this year did shake us by drawing attention to the link between heavy smartphone usage and mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, we did forget about it a week later, like the series predicted we would. Now, the smartphone brand Vivo has taken it upon itself again to remind the consumers to take a break from phones and #switchoff for a while. The campaign features Fareeda Jalal, who plays the role of Dadi and is conceptualised and executed by Lowe Lintas. Jalal quietly observes her family getting ready for lunch. Her granddaughter takes a picture of the food, son is wrapping up a call and daughter-in-law and grandson are also engrossed in their phones. To get them to talk to each other and teach them a lesson through a playful analogy, Jalal plots a plan. As her family starts to consume their food, they realise it is tasteless because there isn’t any salt in it. This sparks a conversation between the members. Excerpts: Q) People often talk about the decreasing attention span of consumers and you have just released a 5-minute long film for Diwali. Tell us a bit about Vivo's new campaign. As a consumer-centric brand, vivo has always focused on establishing a strong connection with its audience through emotional storytelling. With the #JoyofHomecoming campaign, which features the veteran actor Kanwaljit Singh, we aim to remind everyone that the festival of lights is fondly celebrated, when the entire family gets together. The campaign encapsulates the role of smartphone photography in rekindling the joy of connection, and aims to bridge the emotional and physical distances between families and spread happiness. India is a collectivist society and all of us are deeply emotionally connected with our families and loved ones. We understand the importance of capturing those perfect moments with the help of photography and how it can be used to stimulate emotions. Delivering industry-leading camera technology, we want our consumers to enjoy this festival with their loved ones and capture every moment and emotion. Through this, we also intend to strengthen our bond with our consumers, which motivates in delivering what’s best for them. Q) What is the message you are trying to communicate? Q) How has the festive season been so far this year? Are you witnessing a revival? Recovering from 2020, this year businesses across the globe are gradually coming back at their feet. We are definitely optimistic about the situation getting back to normal. As businesses are steadily opening up, we foresee a huge scope for engagement with the consumers and smartphone sales are proportionately expected to increase in the coming months. According to <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/india-smartphone-market-q2-2021/">Counterpoint Research</a>, India’s smartphone shipments grew 82% YoY to reach over 33 million units in Q2 2021, and vivo captured a 15% share of the overall market. According to the latest report by Counterpoint, nearly $7.6 billion worth of smartphones is likely to be sold during the ongoing festive season in India. Hence, we are looking forward to the festive season. Despite the ongoing situation, we have managed to maintain steady growth in the Indian smartphone market. Our V-Series models (the V20 and V21 series) have performed exceptionally well, and since our entry in the premium segment with the X50 series last year followed by the launch of the X60 series early this year, our market share has become 3x in the above 30k segment. The growth numbers clearly indicate the consumers are out there, looking for feature-rich smartphones. As we are nearing the festive season, we have introduced the all new X70 Series Co-Engineered with ZEISS and the response so far has been tremendous. We expect that the premium segment will continue to grow in the future as consumers want to upgrade and they are willing to pay a premium for meaningful innovation. Therefore, the launch of the X70 series is vital ahead of the festive season. Q) How did your association with IPL work for you this year? China doesn’t have an official cricket team, but every year during <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/ipl-2017-msdhoni-is-no-more-the-captain-of-rising-punesupergiants-heres-who-replaced-him/articleshow/57234303.cms">IPL</a>, China comes alive. Now that <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> is back with another season, mobile maker Gionee, based in Shenzhen, China, has bagged the principal sponsor rights for Royal Challengers Bangalore (<keyword id="126251" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="RCB">RCB</keyword>), led by Indian skipper <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/tech/major-boost-to-make-in-india-gionee-set-to-manufatcure-all-its-phones-here/articleshow/57771111.cms">Virat Kohli</a>. 
 
Other Chinese names that one would hear in this <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/advertising/sony-set-to-win-in-all-matches-this-ipl-aims-for-rs-1300-crore-advertisement-revenue/articleshow/57489648.cms">IPL </a>are <keyword id="215177" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vivo">Vivo</keyword>, <keyword id="1731609" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Oppo">Oppo</keyword> and Lenovo-owned Motorola. 
 
Gionee already had the rights for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and now with RCB, they have also signed up Kohli as the main sports brand ambassador. 
 
"Cricket and Bollywood are two religions in India. Today, a visibility in the IPL is as important for a company as it is to be there during Diwali," Arvind Vohra, the head of Gionee in India, told TOI.

As per reports, Gionee will be spending around Rs 75 crore on cricket in India this year, for front jersey for KKR and RCB. "Out of around 60 matches to be played in the IPL, we have now been assured of a visibility in at least 28 outings," Vohra said. 
 
Oppo, which is also seeing India as a major market, will be spending even more, having signed a 5-year contract for being <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/oppo-mobiles-becomes-the-new-sponsor-of-men-in-blue/articleshow/57518520.cms">the official sponsor </a>of the Man in Blue. Although there have been no official statements, BCCI sources estimate it to be Rs 1,079 crore.

New Delhi, Feb 14 () Digital payments firm PhonePe on Friday said it has earmarked Rs 800 crore for marketing this year, to create awareness about the platform and expand its reach. "PhonePe has earmarked Rs 800 crore for marketing in this calendar year, which will include spends on a mix of ATL, BTL, TV, digital marketing and other advertising mediums.
