<ul><li><keyword id="10875" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ibm" source="Orion">IBM</keyword>’s survey shows a strong correlation between hybrid cloud adoption and progress in digital transformation. </li><li>In <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, 85% of respondents have adopted a hybrid cloud approach, which can help drive digital transformation. </li><li>66% of respondents in India say their team lacks the skills needed to be proficient in data management. </li></ul>A study conducted by IBM has found that 85% of respondents in India have adopted the hybrid cloud, which can help drive digital transformation, yet a majority of them are struggling with the complexity to make all their cloud environments work together. The <keyword id="15107722" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ibm-transformation" source="Orion">IBM Transformation</keyword> Index: State of Cloud survey revealed that when it comes to managing their cloud applications, 37% of respondents in India cite security as the top barrier for integrated workloads. Compliance hurdles and lack of available talent are other challenges that continue to hamper cloud strategy or documentation centres in India. Only 30% of Indian respondents manage their hybrid cloud environments holistically, the survey found. “Indian organisations must quickly take stock of where they are on their cloud journey and focus on bridging the gaps related to skills, security, compliance, among others. A pragmatic holistic approach to hybrid cloud can drive immense business value by accelerating innovation, improving cost efficiency and increasing productivity,” said <keyword id="2218197" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="viswanath-ramaswamy" source="Orion">Viswanath Ramaswamy</keyword>, vice president, technology, <keyword id="12063662" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ibm-technology-sales" source="Orion">IBM Technology Sales</keyword>, IBM India/ <keyword id="52011" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="south-asia" source="Orion">South Asia</keyword>. Respondents to the survey say cybersecurity (50%) and data governance (49%) are the top challenges to fully integrating their business ecosystems into the cloud. Furthermore, skills and talent shortages are also impeding their business’s cloud objectives. About 66% of respondents in India say their team lacks the skills needed to be proficient. This is also preventing organisations from leveraging the power of partnerships – about 39% of respondents say a lack of technical skills is holding them back from integrating ecosystem partners into cloud environments. “While our research found the lack of cloud skills as a major challenge, it is encouraging to note that 81% of the Indian respondents said they are creating new positions and teams to fulfil the need for more cloud skills,” Ramaswamy added. With regulations on the rise, so too are compliance challenges. About 57% of respondents believe that ensuring compliance in the cloud is currently too difficult and 33% cite regulatory compliance issues as a key barrier for integrating workloads across private and public IT environments. These challenges span the globe and are especially prevalent in countries such as <keyword id="6356662" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="singapore" source="Orion">Singapore</keyword>, <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>, India and Japan. The survey also pointed to a strong correlation between hybrid cloud adoption and progress in digital transformation. In fact, 76% of respondents think it’s difficult to realise the full potential of a digital transformation without having a solid hybrid cloud strategy in place. However, only 39% of Indian respondents said they have proven the benefits of cloud and are now focused on using it more fully. The IBM survey was conducted online in 12 countries, including India, among 3,014 IT and business professionals. Hybrid cloud adoption is on the rise among Indian businesses but security, compliance and skills gap are impeding progress says IBM

<ul><li>The Telecom Regulatory Authority of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> (TRAI) has reportedly informed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that it is likely to submit <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="Orion">5G</keyword> pricing recommendations in March.</li><li>Despite the buzz around 5G, telecom companies, along with private players, are only conducting 5G trials in the country.</li><li>Bharti Airtel has successfully conducted India's first 5G trial in the 700 MHz band in partnership with <keyword id="6354716" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nokia" source="Orion">Nokia</keyword>, on the outskirts of Kolkata.</li></ul>By 2025, 5G networks are expected to cover one-third of the worlds population, and South Korea, China and the US are the countries which would lead the world in developing and deploying 5G technology. Will India be finally able to join the global 5G bandwagon this year? Reports surfaced late last month that 5G spectrum may finally see the light of the day in 2022. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reportedly informed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that it is likely to submit 5G pricing recommendations in March. It means that if things go as planned, the country can witness 5G auction in July-August. Despite the buzz around 5G, telecom companies, along with private players, are only conducting 5G trials in the country. Bharti Airtel has successfully conducted India's first 5G trial in the 700 MHz band in partnership with Nokia, on the outskirts of Kolkata. Earlier last year, Airtel demonstrated India's first 5G experience over a live 4G network. It also demonstrated India's first rural 5G trial as well as the first Cloud gaming experience on 5G. <keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword> is another leading player in the field of 5G testing technology. The company has successfully conducted trials of connected drones on its indigenous 5G network. According to Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), India must complete the migration from 2G to 4G to 5G at the earliest and the rollout of 5G should be India's national priority. <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> has developed a 100 per cent home-grown and comprehensive 5G solution, which is fully Cloud native and digitally managed. "Because of its converged, future-proof architecture, Jio's network could be quickly and seamlessly upgraded from 4G to 5G," according to Ambani. Nokia and <keyword id="15492" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vodafone" source="Orion">Vodafone</keyword> Idea have also partnered to trial 5G services using E-band in areas where fibre is challenging to deploy. Vodafone Idea is currently conducting 5G trials in India using the trial spectrum in the 3.3GHz-3.6GHz band and mmWave band (24.25GHz-28.5GHz). Earlier, Vodafone Idea had achieved peak speed of over 3.7 Gbps during its 5G trials in Pune. The DoT had approved applications of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and MTNL for 5G trials. The 5G technology will represent around 39 per cent of mobile subscriptions in India at the end of 2027, estimated at about 500 million subscriptions, says a latest Ericsson report. According to Viswanath Ramaswamy, Vice President, Technology, IBM Technology Sales, IBM India/South Asia, 5G offers enormous potential to advance industries across streaming, communications, advanced robotics and manufacturing. "However given the complexity of telecom networks today, it is clear that the tools, systems and methods need to be orchestrated for the network of tomorrow," he said. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to quickly enable changes in the network that optimise network performance and reliability by applying Machine Learning, helping "Communications services providers (CSPs) deliver on the promise of 5G by providing faster customer experiences," Ramaswamy added. India being a ‘mobile first' country, cellular internet is central to every person's digital lives as they communicate, consume and create content, commerce and connect with the community. "As smartphone users mature, they use devices more and more for creating 4K/8K videos, clicking high-resolution 108MP+ photos, streaming HD content and conducting video conferencing calls. The higher bandwidth and higher capacity technology such as 5G, thus, becomes the cornerstone to enable these advanced experiences," Neil Shah, Vice President, Research, at Counterpoint, told IANS. Several smartphone players have also started testing <keyword id="4400143" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g-in-india" source="Orion">5G in India</keyword> and globally. OPPO in November 2021 announced that it has successfully conducted its first VoNR (Voice/Video on New Radio) call from its Hyderabad 5G lab. The 5G VoNR calls were made using the latest Reno6 series smartphone and an end-to-end 5G Standalone (SA) network powered by Keysight test solutions at the Hyderabad 5G Innovation lab of OPPO. OnePlus has announced that the company is investing almost $30 million to scale up 5G research and development labs to take 5G technology to more users worldwide. Technology services major Capgemini has also bolstered its collaboration with Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson to accelerate the deployment of 5G solutions via its 5G lab in Mumbai. The bigger benefit 5G can bring is beyond personal transformation, "Which is enterprise and social transformation with excess capacity, lower latencies and higher throughputs with use-cases such as Private Networks and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Broadband, bridging the digital divide," Shah added. In India, an affordable 5G for the masses may take a longer time to happen, but the country must take the first step towards it this year, so that it catches up with the world on 5G fast. The need for high availability and ultra-low latency has been tempting organizations to extend computing capabilities outside their core data centers and public cloud infrastructures. Worldwide spending on <keyword id="4289842" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="edge-computing" source="Orion">edge computing</keyword> is expected to touch $176 billion by the end of this year, an increase of 14.8% over 2021, according to <a href="https://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS48772522">IDC data</a>. IBM sees this as a tremendous opportunity. Last year, the company launched IBM Cloud Satellite that enables clients to deliver cloud securely in any environment including at the edge. What do you see as the key drivers of edge computing adoption in India? Which industries do you consider frontrunners? Edge computing will impact all industries and force <keyword id="6354185" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="it" source="Orion">IT</keyword> teams to adapt to new architectures, deployment models and business models. According to Gartner, by the end of 2025, 75% of all the data generated will be collected, analyzed, and acted on at the edge, which presents a huge opportunity. To have a resilient long-term business strategy, organizations in India should leverage the benefits edge computing has to offer. The key drivers for edge adoption will continue to be – better control over data and costs, faster insights and actions and continuous operations. In addition to that, factory automation to increase productivity, driving predictive maintenance through visual insights, reducing operational costs, and 5G implementation are other key drivers for edge computing. At present, we see that the industrial manufacturing and telecom sectors are frontrunners when it comes to adopting edge computing, but the healthcare industry is also making a lot of progress. What are the challenges that organizations are facing while scaling up the edge infrastructure and capabilities to meet their dynamic goals? Are edges equipped to handle the growing computing power and storage needs? Organizations need to figure out the right edge computing strategy that will solve their business challenges. This is however easier said than done, and hence having the right technology partner is crucial to leveraging their expertise in building a robust strategy. Another challenge to keep in mind is that we are still at a stage where there are very few use cases and their relevant edge applications. Hence it is important for organizations to think innovatively to create new use cases. Edge computing generates a lot of data and modelling the data to find the right one while not missing relevant ones is also a major challenge. IBM is working with multiple independent software vendors (ISVs) to solve customer challenges and develop new use cases of edge and distributed cloud. We are investing heavily in AI to find the right data and then make sense out of it. Physical security of edge devices and availability of continuous power at the edge are major barriers for adoption. How do organizations ensure that their edge and centralized cloud capabilities work together to create integrated outcomes? Are there any barriers in this area? To create integrated outcomes from edge and centralized cloud capabilities require having a uniform and seamless platform across multiple destinations that allows a single administrator to autonomously manage the scale and variability across tens and thousands of endpoints. Whether you use public cloud, private cloud or edge, having a single platform for all of them helps to move workloads across, as well as having a holistic security and operations framework. This helps with saving cost and reduces time to market. Tell us how IBM Satellite fits into the edge equation? IBM Cloud Satellite is a distributed cloud offering that enables you to consume cloud services anywhere you need them and to deploy, manage, and control workloads across on-premises environments, edge computing and public cloud environments from any cloud vendor. It brings cloud-native services like AI &amp; ML, platform services, toolchains to the edge location as well as customers chosen data center/public cloud. How do you see 5G changing the dynamics of edge computing for Indian enterprises? The convergence of 5G, edge computing and hybrid cloud will revolutionize how Indian enterprises operate. As more businesses embrace 5G and edge, the ability to modernize networks to take advantage of the edge opportunity is critical. For example, by moving to a <keyword id="7603256" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hybrid-cloud-model" source="Orion">hybrid cloud model</keyword>, telcos can process data at the core and network edge across multiple clouds, perform cognitive operations and make it easier to introduce and manage the differentiated digital services. By extending cloud computing to the edge, they can run AI/analytics that make actions faster, run enterprise apps to reduce impacts from intermittent connectivity and minimize data transport to central hubs for cost efficiency. How is IBM collaborating with ecosystem partners to advance the adoption of edge computing in India? IBM is committed to delivering open standards-based edge computing to a comprehensive ecosystem of value-add partners, so that together we can deliver edge solutions to our joint clients at a global scale.
