After facing significant <keyword id="20192095" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flight-disruptions" source="keywords">flight disruptions</keyword> recently, <keyword id="21269688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara-CEO" source="keywords">Vistara CEO</keyword> <keyword id="20128232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinod-Kannan" source="keywords">Vinod Kannan</keyword> on Thursday told the airline staff that the "worst is behind us" and operations have already stabilised. Pilot woes have forced the <keyword id="21105887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group-airline" source="keywords">Tata Group airline</keyword> to temporarily cut down capacity by 10 per cent or 25-30 flights daily. While acknowledging that things should have been planned better, Kannan said it has been a "learning experience". He also said it has been a challenging start to the new financial year and the airline faced significant operational disruption from March 31 to April 2. "The anxiety and frustration felt by our customers was matched in even measure to the pain that all of us felt in seeing our much-loved brand drawing negative commentary from various quarters... I assure you that the worst is behind us, and we have already stabilised our operations, with our on-time performance (OTP) increasing to 89 per cent on 9 April 2024 (second highest among all Indian airlines)," he said in a message to the staff. The full-service carrier has around 6,500 people, including about 1,000 pilots. In the wake of the disruptions, the top management of the airline had held a virtual meeting with the pilots. One of the reasons for the disruptions was also that some section of pilots reporting sick to protest against the new contract that will result in pay revision. According to Kannan, there were a multitude of reasons for the disruptions, including ATC delays, bird hits, and maintenance activities early last month. "We were stretched in our pilot rosters and there was not enough resilience to withstand injects that we would otherwise have weathered. We could and should have planned better, and this has been a learning experience for us which we will review thoroughly," the <keyword id="20018887" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vistara" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Vistara" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> chief said. Most of the cancellations were in the domestic network and the carrier is working on plans for May and beyond. "While the events of the last week may seem like a setback, the hallmark of our organisation has always been that we have bounced back from tough situations ' and emerged stronger. "... I trust each of you to continue to put in all efforts to ensure that we do not let our brand, and our customer, down," Kannan said. As we emerge from this difficult phase, he said it is this commitment to being a customer-oriented airline that will help it bounce back stronger. The airline has also reached out to customers impacted by the cancellations and delays over the affected period. "We have provided the necessary compensation as per the regulatory mandate, and have also offered additional service recovery vouchers for passengers whose flights were significantly delayed," the Vistara chief said. The carrier has 70 aircraft in its fleet and is to operate more than 300 flights daily in the ongoing summer schedule. Discontent has been brewing among a section of the cabin crew at the low-cost carrier for some time now, especially after the start of the process of merger of AIX Connect, formerly AirAsia India, with itself. The sources on Wednesday said several cabin crew members started reporting sick since Monday evening and as there are not enough cabin crew members, "scores of flights" have been cancelled at various airports, including Kochi, Calicut and Bangalore. Late last month, a union representing a section of the Air India Express cabin crew alleged that the airline is being mismanaged and there is a lack of equality in the treatment of the staff. Air India Express Employees Union (AIXEU), a registered union, which claims to represent around 300 cabin crew members, mostly seniors, had also alleged that mismanagement of the affairs has affected the morale of the employees. Many passengers took to social media on Wednesday complaining about the sudden cancellation of flights. In response to a passenger's post on X about flight cancellation, Air India Express apologised and said the flight was cancelled "due to operational reasons". "As part of our service recovery process, you can either opt to reschedule the flight within the next 7 days or request a full refund through our chat bot Tia...," the airline said in a post on X. Air India Express cancels flights due to cabin crew shortage: Sources

The agreement states that when an airline cancels flights under urgent circumstances, other airlines would accommodate passengers while the former reimburses the accommodating airline. The circular issued by Air India on Friday confirmed that the airlines will not accept passengers from Jet until further notice, while <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/air-india-won-t-accommodate-fliers-from-jet-s-cancelled/story-M5wljallUSfWvtdq9Qel8I.html">Vistara backed off</a> saying that the cancellations were too frequent, causing commercial loss. Air India, Vistara scrap agreement to accommodate flyers with cancelled Jet Airways tickets

As per the DGCA data, the overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the month has been 0.25 per cent, and the main reasons have been identified as weather, technical, or operational. A maximum of 41.7 per cent of flights were cancelled due to technical reasons and 31.6 per cent due to weather-related reasons during the month. Domestic aviation traffic continues to record growth as passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-November 2022 stood at 11.05 crore as against 7.26 crore during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an annual growth of 52.19 per cent and monthly growth of 11.06 per cent. According to the stats, for the month of November, Indian passengers took more international flights than domestic. This is for the first time in 15 months that the number of international passengers surpassed domestic ones, with international passenger traffic growing by <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/charts/overseas-air-travel-outpaces-domestic-traffic-first-time-in-15-months">12.8%</a> compared to previous month. On the other hand, <a href="http://dgca.nic.in/reports/Traffic-ind.htm">domestic air passenger traffic</a> rose by nearly 11% for the month compared to previous month accounting to 11.64 million, which was the lowest over the last four years. For the eleven months until November, the domestic airlines registered a year-on-year growth of 19.21%. Overall, the domestic air passenger traffic was the lowest in the fourth quarter in 2018. Airlines in India have been pushing consumer-friendly app bookings and various discounts on their domestic and international flights to attract flyers. The DGCA report also highlighted cancellations and delays pertaining to the number of passengers booking air travel in India. The state-owned national carrier Air India made maximum number of cancellations on domestic routes at 2.74% while <keyword id="2467342" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> made the least number of cancellations at the rate of 0.15%. Airlines in India are raining discounts on domestic and international flights

New Delhi, Mar 20 () After GoAir and IndiGo, Vistara announced on Friday night that it will be curtailing its domestic operations on Sunday when 'Janta curfew' would be in force. While IndiGo announced that it will be operating 60 per cent of its domestic flights on Sunday, GoAir said that it will be suspending its domestic operations completely on that day. "Vistara will operate on a reduced network on Sunday, 22 March on account of Janta curfew. Passengers who have been affected by cancellations will be contacted soon," said the airline's spokesperson.The prime minister has appealed people to stay indoors on Sunday in an effort to promote social distancing to contain the coronavirus epidemic. Mumbai, Apr 14 () With the central government extending the lockdown to May 3 and subsequently the suspension of all commercial passenger services also till then, domestic airlines have again decided not to refund the customers in cash for their cancelled flights and instead offer them rescheduling of tickets for a later date without any additional fee.India had imposed a 21-day lockdown from March 25 to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Consequently, all domestic and international commercial passenger flights were suspended for this time period.However, most of the airlines had been taking bookings except national carrier Air India for domestic flights for the period beyond April 14.After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the extension of lockdown till May 3, the aviation regulator DGCA issued a circular stating all international as well as domestic flights will remain suspended during the lockdown."Following orders from the Ministry of Civil Aviation issued to all airlines, we have extended the suspension of our operations until May 3, 2020."We are in the process of cancelling the affected bookings and we will offer customers free of charge rescheduling to another date until December 31, 2020," a Vistara spokesperson told in statement.The customer, however, will have to pay the fare difference, if any, at the time of rebooking, the airline said.A GoAir spokesperson said that it has already "factored in" these type of scenario and that the airline will review its earlier scheme of providing rescheduling free of cost at a later date while protecting their existing bookings for one year.The airline had on Monday announced that it was extending the "Protect Your PNR" scheme till April 30, 2020.Aviation consultancy Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation had last week termed the sale of tickets without a clarity on lockdown as "unfair to consumers"."The decision to allow opening of advance bookings from April 14 without a decision on lifting of the lockdown and likely structure of the transition period post the lockdown needs to be immediately reviewed as this is unfair to consumers," Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) said in a statement.Citing examples of erstwhile Kingfisher Airlines and now-defunct Jet Airways, CAPA said that the closure of these two carriers has "already resulted in massive losses to passengers as refunds couldn't be processed resulting in crores of losses to passengers".It may be mentioned here that the then customers of the erstwhile Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways could not recover their money which the two airlines had amassed on account of advance bookings only after their going belly up.CAPA in its March 18 report had stated that amid COVID-19 and in the absence of government support "several Indian airlines may shut down operations by May or June due to a lack of cash."Announcing that all its flights are cancelled till May 3, IndiGo said, it is in the process of cancelling the reservations."Your ticket amount is protected in the form of credit shell in the PNR, which can be utilised within one year of the issued date." However, the airline has maintained the flights were cancelled because of ‘unforeseen operational circumstance,’ and not pilot protest. The airline reportedly paid some of its pilots and senior executives only 75% of their salary for September and still owed them their salaries for October as of 21 November, Mint <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/VyO4noOEL1R7CTtU2QqEmK/Jet-Airways-pilots-top-brass-to-meet-on-salary-delays.html">reported</a>. In a bid to cut losses, the private carrier <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/jet-to-cut-gulf-flights-add-frequency-on-some-other-sector-from-delhi-mumbai/articleshow/66909062.cms">will also pull </a> flights operating on seven gulf routes, starting Wednesday, PTI reported. These flights included 39 services from domestic Indian cities to Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha. Currently, the airline has one service functional on each of the routes — Kochi-Doha, Mangalore-Abu Dhabi, Mangalore-Dubai and Lucknow-Abu Dhabi, among other services. The move is part of the airline’s plan to shift capacity away from “uneconomical routes to more profitable ones,” Jet Airways spokesperson told PTI. The flight services from Mumbai- Doha, Delhi-Doha and Mumbai-Dubai routes will, instead, be increased, it added. Other steps the airline has taken recently to help in cost cutting include pulling <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/d2WYBqUwI1Rcr16e4odfiI/Jet-Airways-cuts-down-on-lounge-services-to-reduce-costs.html">complimentary access </a>to lounge services for its economy passengers, and plans to sell a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/bDUlGyvpA6GaeFMsRWGorL/Jet-Airways-will-not-exit-Jet-Privilege-completely.html">49.9% stake</a> in Jet Privilege, a frequent flyer programme. An ongoing salary row reportedly forced India’s Jet Airways to cancel over a dozen flights as its pilots called in ‘sick’

New Delhi, <keyword id="842113" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Domestic-air-passenger-traffic" source="Orion">Domestic air passenger traffic</keyword> in the country recorded an annual growth of nearly 11 per cent to 1.26 crore in October, according to official data released on Thursday. The traffic stood at 1.14 crore passengers in October 2022 and at 1.22 crore passengers in September this year. The data released by aviation regulator DGCA showed that IndiGo carried 79.07 lakh passengers, garnering a domestic market share of 62.6 per cent in October. The market share was lower compared to 63.4 per cent registered in September. Last month, Air India's domestic market share climbed to 10.5 per cent from 9.8 per cent in September while that of Vistara and AirAsia India (renamed as AIX Connect) declined to 9.7 per cent and 6.6 per cent, respectively, in October. SpiceJet's market share grew to 5 per cent in October from 4.4 per cent in September while that of Akasa Air remained unchanged at 4.2 per cent. "Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-October 2023 were 1,254.98 lakhs as against 988.31 lakhs during the corresponding period of previous year thereby registering annual growth of 26.98 per cent and monthly growth of 10.78 per cent," the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said. As many as 587 passengers were denied boarding by scheduled airlines in October, according to the data. A total of 30,307 passengers were affected by flight cancellations and 1,78,227 passengers were impacted due to flight delays last month.
