It comes with a frosted glass back that gives it a premium look as most devices in this segment offer a plastic back.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="Rear" msid="101151518" hostid="261" sizebytes="55848" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Lava Agni 2 5G features a glass back&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The Lava Agni 2 5G gives a premium feel when you hold it in your hand but the back can be a bit slippery. While the matte finish is able to prevent fingerprint smudges, I recommend using a case to get a better grip.<br /><br />It is to be noted that the Agni 2 5G weighs 210 grams and may feel bulky to some. One-handed usage may be difficult for extended durations, especially if you’re adding more weight by using a case.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="IMG_20230529_173822" msid="101151556" hostid="261" sizebytes="68302" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Rear camera module on the Lava Agni 2 5G&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The smartphone comes with a large circular camera module that houses the quad camera setup at the back. The bottom is equipped with a SIM tray, a microphone, the USB Type-C port and the speaker grille.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="Display" msid="101151680" hostid="261" sizebytes="72298" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Lava Agni 2 5G display&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />Display is another area where the Agni 2 impressed me. The device comes with a 6.78-inch Full HD+ curved AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 950 nits of peak brightness. It is one of the few devices in the segment that offers a curved AMOLED display in this segment. The other device is the recently launched<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/realme-11-pro-5g-review-a-mid-ranger-with-a-premium-design/articleshow/100865073.cms"> Realme 11 Pro 5G</a>.<br /><br />The smartphone’s display comes with HDR 10+ support and features thin bezels, making it a good option to watch content or play games. The high brightness also ensures proper visibility, even in direct sunlight.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Software and performance" comment="subhead" text="Software and performance"><span data-til="noop">Software and performance</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />In terms of software, the Lava Agni 2 5G runs on Android 13 out of the box and the company has promised to offer two Android updates and three years of security updates. This means that the device will get the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/android-14-update-to-rollout-soon-find-out-if-your-smartphone-is-eligible/articleshow/101125653.cms"> Android 14</a> and Android 15 updates.<br /><br />The device offers a near-stock experience and unlike a majority of devices in this segment, it comes with a bloat-free UI and does not come with any pre-installed applications. It was refreshing to not have to uninstall a slew of apps soon after booting up a device in this segment.<br /><br />While my experience with the device was good, the UI needs a little refinement to make it smooth.<br /><br />The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7050 chipset and comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The chipset is able to handle day-to-day tasks with ease and can multitask without any issues. I played games like Battlegrounds Mobile India on the device and while the device did not stutter, it heats up a little after an extended gaming session.<br /><br />It is powered by a 4,700mAh battery coupled with 66W fast charging support. The images captured using the ultra-wide sensor did not turn out as good and looked grainy.<br /><br />The device struggled a bit in low-light conditions but this is expected at this price point.<br /><br />On the front, the device comes with a 16MP selfie camera, which captures decent images in daylight but struggles in low-light conditions, just like the primary camera.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Verdict" comment="subhead" text="Verdict"><span data-til="noop">Verdict</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />The Lava Agni 2 5G is a good phone at this price point and punches above its weight. White men dominate the cannabis C-suite

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The 2020 GT is the "grand touring" model from <keyword id="64813" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="McLaren">McLaren</keyword>, boasting a comfortable ride and ample storage space via two trunks.</li><li>In fact, the combined storage space from its trunks is actually more than a Toyota Camry's trunk capacity.</li><li>The GT starts at $215,500, but my loaner came to $237,930 MSRP after options.</li></ul><p>I'm old enough to remember when there were no McLarens for sale. The only McLaren you could buy for the road was <a href="https://cars.mclaren.com/us-en/legacy/mclaren-f1">the hallowed F1</a>, which <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20070213011041/http://www.mclarenautomotive.com/cars/f1_production.htm">ended production in 1998</a>. Two decades and an exponentially heightened collector status later, most people don't have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/1994-mclaren-f1-auctioned-for-19-million-2019-8#:~:text=Monterey%20Car%20Week%20is%20a,to%20be%20auctioned%20this%20year.">a spare $20 million</a> to blow on an F1 at auction today.</p><p>But now there are many McLarens to choose from. McLarens that cost far less than $20 million. McLarens that have <a href="https://jalopnik.com/give-me-top-exit-exhausts-or-give-me-death-1827201559#_ga=2.237367176.928740838.1546822882-1329287156.1540411326">top-exit exhausts</a> — exhaust tips that point upward, because awesome — <a href="https://jalopnik.com/there-will-always-be-room-for-supercars-1832867383">McLarens without roofs</a>, and utilitarian McLarens with big trunks.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_57" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100038" hostid="261"></div>That brings us to the <keyword id="10238587" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mclaren-gt">McLaren GT</keyword>. <h2><strong>The <keyword id="10238588" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="2020-mclaren-gt">2020 McLaren GT</keyword>: The one with the big trunk</strong></h2><p>In 2019, McLaren <a href="https://cars.mclaren.press/en-us/releases/703">debuted</a> the new McLaren GT, calling it the "first true McLaren Grand Tourer in the McLaren product family." Yes, there indeed was the comfort-oriented <a href="https://jalopnik.com/the-2017-mclaren-570gt-is-a-wicked-supercar-that-you-ca-1778688341">McLaren 570 GT</a> that came before this, but the past is the past!</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_54" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100040" hostid="261"></div>As its name promises, the GT is meant for comfortable long-distance driving with additional room for luggage. Other McLarens have been <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/the-mclaren-720s-is-a-supercar-for-daily-driving-1537898400">widely praised</a> for their everyday comfort, but the GT offers additional storage space not found elsewhere in McLaren's lineup. The car still uses a carbon-fiber monocoque called the MonoCell II-T as a lightweight and rigid chassis, but the "T" here stands for "Touring." <p>Basically, it just means that McLaren <a href="https://cars.mclaren.press/en-us/releases/703#gallery">added</a> a carbon fiber upper structure behind the passenger cabin and made a luggage area above the engine. For anyone who's ever been annoyed that they can't take their McLaren on a cross-country road trip <em>and</em> fit "golf clubs or skis" in the back, this is the solution. We count our blessings in this house. </p><h2><strong><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_18" height="1668" width="2500" msid="79100044" hostid="261"></div>Details and safety ratings: More trunk space than a Camry. Really.</strong></h2><p>The GT uses a mid-mounted, 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 that's good for a claimed 612 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. All of that is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. McLaren estimates the 0-to-60-mph sprint to happen in just 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 203 mph.</p><p>It is 15.4 feet long, 6.7 feet wide, and stands about four feet tall. Staggered wheels mean the GT wears 20-inch wheels in the front and 21-inch wheels in the back, both of which are much larger than the 17-inch ones on your Hyundai Elantra. Curb weight comes to 3,384 pounds.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_44" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100045" hostid="261"></div>The McLaren GT's front trunk provides 5.3 cubic feet of storage space, and the rear 14.8 cubic feet. Combined, the two offer 20.1 cubic feet of storage room — which is actually more than the 15.1 cubic feet of space found in the single rear trunk on the <a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/toyota-cms-media/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/2021_Toyota_Camry_Product-Information.pdf">Toyota Camry</a>. Huh!<p>The GT is also better on climate guilt than many of its <keyword id="731183" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Supercar">supercar</keyword> pals, according to its EPA-estimated fuel economy: 15 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined. Sure, it's not outstanding. But this is a McLaren, not a Prius.</p><p>As is the case with many sports cars, the McLaren GT hasn't been rated for safety or crashworthiness by the National Highway <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_31" height="3750" width="2500" msid="79100048" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>What stands out: Taking flight</strong></h2><p>Driving or riding in a car with a monocoque chassis doesn't feel quite like anything else. Because the structure is one solid piece, the whole car sort of behaves that way too. Going over a bump in a normal car splits the action in two: impact on the front wheels and then, a second later, impact on the rear wheels.</p><p>In the GT, bumps did not feel like this. Whatever affected the front was felt immediately throughout the entire car, similar to how turbulence feels when you're flying. The GT may be the "practical" McLaren, but it's maintained the wonderfully distinctive soaring sensation that other McLaren models have perfected. Punch in the accelerator and you've punched yourself straight for the horizon, the sound of those twin-turbos whooshing behind your head. </p><p>The GT's pièce de résistance, however, is its steering. It uses a electro-hydraulically assisted steering system, so there's no artificial feel — typically associated with electronically assisted steering — to worry about here. There's weight to it, but it's welcomed weight because you're able to tuck the nose precisely and directly into a corner every single time. Wondering what the front wheels are up to is for the birds, baby.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_19" height="1668" width="2500" msid="79100049" hostid="261"></div>And the trunks. At first, the idea of a McLaren with extra storage room seemed gimmicky to me. But as it turns out, the rear cabin does fit a good amount of stuff. The front trunk eats up your average-sized overhead suitcase. And there's a decent-sized parcel shelf right behind the passengers that fits a larger-sized overhead suitcase. Putting anything there severely restricts your rearward visibility, though.<p>The rest of the storage cabin is admittedly strangely shaped: It slopes over the engine compartment, while the "ceiling" is shaped by the tapered rear glass hatch closure. Whatever you put back there needs to be irregularly shaped or able to be compacted. </p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_2" height="1666" width="2500" msid="79100051" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_4" height="1666" width="2500" msid="79100054" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_3" height="1666" width="2500" msid="79100056" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_OEM_5" height="1870" width="2500" msid="79100057" hostid="261"></div>Don't worry, though: McLaren has a bespoke, four-piece luggage set, exclusively designed to fit in the GT, available for purchase. <a href="https://cars.mclaren.press/en-gb/releases/741">Yours for about $15,000</a>, or nearly the base price of that Elantra.<h2><strong>What falls short: Room for luggage and that's about it</strong></h2><p>There's no denying that the McLaren GT is a huge car. It's long and wide, and the up-swinging dihedral doors add about another two feet of width on either side. Unless you have a very big and tall space, this car will be a challenge to fit in most garages.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_48" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100062" hostid="261"></div>But despite how big the GT is from the outside, there aren't actually a whole lot of places to put loose items — purses, phones, keys, masks — once you're sitting in it. There are small door pockets and a couple of cup holders, but that's about it.<p>The interior layout, while providing ample luggage room and a space-age feel, was not great for small everyday things. </p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_49" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100154" hostid="261"></div>Did the people who designed the GT <em>not</em> carry loose items with them? Or did they perhaps merely <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/09/the-gender-politics-of-pockets/380935/">have the privilege of owning clothes that come with real pockets</a> and designed the car for this very same demographic? Unclear.<p>There's also the backup camera footage, which doesn't appear in the center infotainment screen as one would expect. Instead, it shows up in the driver information cluster, which is a nice idea until you remember you also need to steer in reverse sometimes.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_19" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100156" hostid="261"></div><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_18" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100157" hostid="261"></div>In the GT, I felt like I was driving on eggshells. This wasn't only because of its $237,930 price, but because I had trouble seeing out of it. <p>Girl, let me tell you: You sit low and those fenders are <em>tall</em>. The hood slopes down and out of your line of sight. The vast rear end stretches out of your eye kingdom. On open stretches of highway, this is no problem at all. But life isn't all big, sweeping roads, Chuck! Sometimes it's tight parking lots and cramped streets.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_51" height="3750" width="2500" msid="79100161" hostid="261"></div>My greatest fear was curbing one of the lovely wheels — giant in diameter and shod with extremely low-profile Pirelli P-Zeros. A rolling risk, a constant test of my depth perception. Half of my driving around town relied on my own estimations, the other on faith alone. <h2><strong>How the GT compares to its competitors: The only one of its kind</strong></h2><p>Because the McLaren GT bills itself as a grand tourer, there is no shortage of competition. Most of it will be cheaper, though, because most of it isn't as cool.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_40" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100163" hostid="261"></div>Base MSRP of the GT comes to $215,500, but after options such as the electrochromic roof ($6,000), the MSO Bright Pack ($5,500; whatever that is), polished brake calipers with a black logo ($1,500), a luggage retention strap ($500; I could make this with a bungee cord), lithium-ion battery charger ($230; why?), warning triangle and first-aid kit ($100), car cover ($600), sports exhaust ($3,500), and Viridian exterior paint ($4,500), the final MSRP came to $237,930.<p>Sure, you've got your Bentley Continental GTs (<a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/bentley/continental-gt">$207,825</a>), Aston Martin DB11s (<a href="https://www.edmunds.com/aston-martin/db11/">$205,600</a>), Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupes (<a href="https://www.mbusa.com/en/vehicles/build/s-class/coupe/s63c4">$171,400</a>), Porsche 911 Turbo S models (<a href="https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/911/911-turbo-models/911-turbo-s/">$203,500</a>), and Ferrari GTC4 Lusso Ts (<a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/ferrari/gtc4lusso">$263,750</a>), but none of them have the same flair as the McLaren. </p><div type="image" title="Large 9 TheMcLarenMP4 12CCarbonMonoCell" height="1574" width="2500" msid="79100166" hostid="261"></div>They don't have swooping doors, the hammerhead-like face, the alien-looking interior, or a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis. This McLaren has presence and it's made by people who know how to build fast things. If you're going to drop close to a quarter of a million dollars on a supercar that can <em>also</em> carry golf clubs, you can't really beat this one.<h2><strong>Our impressions: Performance over comfort</strong></h2><p>Thinking about the McLaren a month later, the thing I remember most is how much effort driving it commanded. I don't mean that it's difficult to drive, but rather that everything you touched to get it moving or stopping felt tight and purposeful. </p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_64" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100171" hostid="261"></div>You had to push a little harder on the brake and throttle pedals. The steering was always heavy, no matter the speed or drive mode, complementing the chassis wonderfully. The GT's exterior design might be a touch mellower, more streamlined, and less holey than the rest of McLaren's cars, but underneath, it's <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/134042/softball-began-play-hardball">soft like softballs are "soft."</a><p>Toss it into tight turns and the suspension staunchly refuses to lean, a mountain that refuses to bow to centrifugal force. The unshakable steering feels out the road like you're sweeping your palm across it.</p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_55" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100173" hostid="261"></div>I didn't find the sound of the twin-turbocharged V8 particularly beautiful, but it was neat to hear the turbochargers whoosh. Strangely, though, the 612-horsepower GT felt pretty tame. It's not slow by any means, but it doesn't lay into its power as ferociously as other McLarens do. <p>Perhaps this had to do with being turbocharged, as I detected some lag — or maybe the sensation of having your face torn off isn't the GT's M.O. This is the long-distance McLaren, remember, not the face-tearing sprinter. </p><div type="image" title="2020 McLaren GT_KL_36" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79100175" hostid="261"></div>But it's clear, especially when you consider everything it's up against, that McLaren still values performance over comfort. Distilled, the GT is a mid-engined car and with carbon-fiber tub — bones that make sense, because it was built by a company that has only ever known race cars and seismically fast road cars. The GT will never shed the driving characteristics that those basic qualities bring; it simply has a bigger trunk and a less bitey personality than the other McLarens. <p>So, sure, the McLaren GT might be a "grand tourer." Cone cells detect color, while rod cells detect light and dark.</p><p>I've known I was color-blind since I was about three years old, on a walk to Bee Creek Park in College Station, Texas. My dad, holding my hand, pointed out trees with leaves turning red for the start of autumn. I had no blasted idea what he was talking about, and told him so. He wasn't too surprised. After all, there had been a 50% chance I'd turn out (as my school friends would later call it) color-stupid.</p><p>Colorblindness (or stupidity) is, in the great scheme of things, hardly a great problem&#xa0;in life. I'll never get to fly a commercial airliner or fighter plane. Some video games maps and heads-up-displays are confusing to me.&#xa0;Once or twice in my lifetime I've driven through a red light on an empty road at night. And pretty much every data visualization on the internet looks like a mess.</p><p>But the real frustrating part of colorblindness, for me at least, is how little most people seem to understand it. Do I look naked to you??</p><p>In the grand scheme of things, of course, this falls squarely into the&#xa0;<em>not a big deal</em> category of irritants. The oppression of colorblind people is decidedly not a thing. But still, lots of people don't understand what colorblindness is. And most&#xa0;colorblind people&#xa0;I've spoken with agree that over a lifetime that confusion gets pretty annoying. So I'm going to clear up a few things.</p><h2>What even&#xa0;<em>is</em> colorblindness? How do you catch it?</h2><p>The most commons forms of colorblindness are <a href="https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/color-vision-deficiency#inheritance">genetic conditions</a>, passed along the x-chromosome. People with an x-chromosome and a y-chromosome only need their one x to be defective&#xa0;to catch it. People with two x-chromosomes need both to be defective.</p><p>Most women have two x-chromosomes, and most men&#xa0;have an x-chromosome and a y-chromosome. Enough genetics stuff. What is it&#xa0;<em>like</em> to be colorblind?</h2><p>Okay. First things first.&#xa0;If it weren't for all of you color-sighted folks around&#xa0;<em>telling&#xa0;</em>me I'm colorblind, I'd never know it.</p><p>Like many colorblind people, I'm what's called "red-green colorblind" as a shorthand. True, black-and-white colorblindness where the world looks like an old-timey movie is actually pretty rare. And it's probably a lot easier for you to imagine.</p><p>My world looks pretty colorful. <span style="color: #ff0000;">Red</span>, <span style="color: #008000;">green</span>, <span style="color: #ffff00;">yellow</span>, <span style="color: #ff6600;">orange</span>, <span style="color: #800080;">purple</span>, <span style="color: #0000ff;">blue</span>, <span style="color: #ff99cc;">pink</span>. Name any of those colors and I can form a clear picture of it in my head, think of a thing in the world that I've seen as that color. (Though green and orange look pretty similar in that sentence, and yellow is almost illegible.)</p><p>But there are a whole lot of reddish, greenish, brownish things in my&#xa0;world that other people seem to see as distinct shades. Nearly everything other people describe as purple I see as blue. Sometimes white things turn out to be pink in other people's eyes.&#xa0;</p><p>The real mystery arises with all the in-between shades. Some of them I can spot well enough - royal blue, baby blue, and sky blue for example.</p><p>But there's a whole universe of hues that are mysterious to me. I can almost never recognize crimson, auburn, or salmon unless they're pointed out to me. The same holds for most purples. I'm&#xa0;<em>told&#xa0;</em>there are colors with names like&#xa0;indigo, teal, and yellow-green, but I'm not sure I believe it.</p><h2>Can you show me what it's like to be colorblind?</h2><p>Probably not. Some tools on the internet claim to convert images to show what they would look like to colorblind people. I can't step outside my own visual experience to evaluate them from a neutral perspective, but I'm&#xa0;doubtful.</p><p>Here's why.</p><p>Wavelengths of light, which our brains interpret as color, are objective features of the universe. And I can point toward certain wavelengths and say they're indistinguishable to me. So neither of us can really know what each others' perspectives really look like.</p><p>Similarly, I have no idea what it's like to be blue-yellow colorblind (a rarer form). Confusing blue and yellow? Those people must be bonkers!</p><h2>How can I be less annoying and more helpful to my colorblind comrades?</h2><p>Ah! Finally, a simple question.</p><ul><li>Don't ask us to tell you what color our&#xa0;shirt is. We know what color&#xa0;our shirt is! It's [<em>inaudible</em>].</li><li>Avoid color-coding things when possible. When color-coding is necessary, stick to bold, primary colors and try to spread them over as wide an area as possible. <span style="color: #ff0000;">It's much harder for us to tell</span> <span style="color: #008000;">these two colors apart, <span style="color: #000000;">using only thin crowded text,</span></span>&#xa0;<strong><span style="color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ff0000;">&#xa0;t</span></span></strong><span style="color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ff0000;"> h a n &#xa0; &#xa0;t h e s e&#xa0;</span></span><span style="color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #008000;"> t w o &#xa0; c o l o r s</span></span><span style="color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #008000;"> </span></span>, using nice spread-out&#xa0;color blocks.</li><li>Remember, confusing colors is not the same thing as not seeing that color exists. If you put a colorful thing on a white background, we can probably tell it's there. (Probably.) We just may not know what it is.</li><li>If we get a color wrong, just correct us! But, like, also keep in mind that this has happened about a million times in our lives and we may not find it as hilarious as you do.</li></ul><p>That's all there is to it, really.</p><h2>Wait, I think I might be colorblind!</h2><p>Cool! Luckily, it's super easy to test for. <a href="http://enchroma.com/test/instructions/">This page</a>&#xa0;(made by the same people who make those glasses)&#xa0;can tell you if you're colorblind, and what sort of colorblindness you have.</p><h2>Actually, whether or not you're colorblind, you're super colorblind.</h2><p>Even if all the cones in your eyes function perfectly, you can't see anything close to "all" of the colors. You see significantly more than I do, just like I see significantly more than a person with a more severe visual defect. But your eyes still round infinite wavelengths of light in the visual spectrum into just a few million colors.</p><p>Some people, known as tetrachromats, have extra cones in their eyes and see millions more colors within the same wavelengths&#xa0;that you see. Concetta Antico, a tetrachromat, <a href="http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2015/02/what-like-see-a-hundred-million-colors.html">described her vision&#xa0;to New York Magazine</a>&#xa0;like this:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>I see colors in other colors. For example, I'm looking at some light right now that's peeking through the door in my house. Other people might just see white light, but I see orange and yellow and pink and green and some magenta and a little bit of blue. So white is not white; white is all varieties of white. You know when you look at a pantone and you see all the whites separated out? It's like that for me, but they are more intense. I see all those whites in white but I resolve all these colors in the white, so it's almost like a mosaic. They are all next to each other but connected. As I look at it, I can differentiate different colors. I could never say that's just a white door, instead I see blue, white, yellow-blue, gray ...</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>...&#xa0;<span>Let's take mowed grass. Someone who doesn't have this genetic variation might see bright green, maybe lights or darks in it. I see pinks, reds, oranges, gold in the blades and the tips, and gray-blues and violets and dark greens, browns and emeralds and viridians, limes and many more colors - hundreds of other colors in grass. It's fascinating and mesmerizing. &#xa0;</span></span></p><p><span><span>Try to picture that. Really imagine what it's like. See how impossible that is? That's what it's like when you describe your color vision to us.</span></span></p><p><span><span>And there are animals with even more cones that can see even more colors in our wavelengths, as well as many creatures that can see deep into the ultra-violet and infra-red ranges. If not, oh well! So she isn't colorblind. But she&#xa0;is<em>&#xa0;</em>a carrier.<p>That means that when she has a child, she has a 50% chance of passing that defective x-chromosome along.</p><p>My father, Ed, passed me a y-chromosome. And my mother passed me her defective x, so I'm colorblind. If they had a child tomorrow with two x-chromosomes, that child would have a 50% chance of becoming a carrier like my mother. If my father were colorblind as well (he isn't), that two-x-chromosome child would have a 50% chance of being born colorblind.&#xa0;</p><p>If they were both colorblind, all of their children would be colorblind.</p><h2>Okay, okay. Enough genetics stuff. What is it&#xa0;<em>like</em> to be colorblind?</h2><p>Okay. First things first.&#xa0;If it weren't for all of you color-sighted folks around&#xa0;<em>telling&#xa0;</em>me I'm colorblind, I'd never know it.</p><p>Like many colorblind people, I'm what's called "red-green colorblind" as a shorthand. True, black-and-white colorblindness where the world looks like an old-timey movie is actually pretty rare. And it's probably a lot easier for you to imagine.</p><p>My world looks pretty colorful. <span style="color: #ff0000;">Red</span>, <span style="color: #008000;">green</span>, <span style="color: #ffff00;">yellow</span>, <span style="color: #ff6600;">orange</span>, <span style="color: #800080;">purple</span>, <span style="color: #0000ff;">blue</span>, <span style="color: #ff99cc;">pink</span>. Name any of those colors and I can form a clear picture of it in my head, think of a thing in the world that I've seen as that color.</p><p>But there are a whole lot of reddish, greenish, brownish things in the world that other people seem to see as distinct shades. Nearly everything other people describe as purple I see as blue. Sometimes white things turn out to be pink in other people's eyes.&#xa0;</p><p>The real mystery arises with all the in-between shades. Some of them I can spot well enough - royal blue, baby blue, and sky blue for example.</p><p>But there's a whole universe of hues that are mysterious to me. I can almost never recognize crimson, auburn, or salmon unless they're pointed out to me. The same holds for most purples. I'm&#xa0;<em>told&#xa0;</em>there are colors with names like&#xa0;indigo, teal, and yellow-green, but I'm not sure I believe it.</p><h2>Can you show me what it's like to be colorblind?</h2><p>Probably not. Some tools on the internet claim to convert images to show what they would look like to colorblind people. I can't step outside my own visual experience to evaluate them from a neutral perspective, but I'm&#xa0;doubtful.</p><p>Here's why.</p><p>Wavelengths of light, which our brains interpret as color, are objective features of the universe. And I can point toward certain wavelengths and say they're indistinguishable to me. But I can't describe for you or visually represent the reddish-greenish color my brain churns up when my cones send a signal saying "well, it's one of those."</p><p>Here's a photograph that has a lot of color in it:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/579a24fadd08954f578b495b-800/colorblindness.jpg" alt="colorblindness" data-mce-source="Rafi Letzter/Tech Insider"><p class="source"><span>Rafi Letzter/Tech Insider</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>What does it look like to you? What does&#xa0;colorfulness look like? What is it like to see in full color?</p><p>You can't explain that to me, not really. And I can't explain my muddier vision to you any better. I can turn down the saturation on reds, greens, and purples, like so:</p><p><div><iframe frameborder="0" class="juxtapose" width="100%" height="532.48" src="https://cdn.knightlab.com/libs/juxtapose/latest/embed/index.html?uid=d69b333a-5425-11e6-8965-0e7075bba956"></iframe></div></p><p>But colorblindness is a confusion and conflation of colors, not just a desaturation. So neither of us can really know what each others' perspectives really look like.</p><p>I've been trying <a href="http://enchroma.com/">Enchroma</a> colorblindness "correction" lenses lately and mostly they seem to make green traffic lights look a lot greener and people look a lot more orange. But their job is to make it easier to distinguish colors, not induce true color-slightness.</p><p>Similarly, I have no idea what it's like to be blue-yellow colorblind (a rarer form). Confusing blue and yellow? Those people must be crazy!</p><h2>How can I be less annoying and more helpful to my colorblind comrades?</h2><p>Ah! Finally, a simple question.</p><ul><li>Don't ask us to tell you what color our&#xa0;shirt is. We know what color&#xa0;our shirt is! It's [<em>inaudible</em>].</li><li>Avoid color-coding things when possible. When color-coding is necessary, stick to bold, primary colors and try to spread them over as wide an area as possible. <span style="color: #ff0000;">It's much harder for us to tell</span> <span style="color: #008000;">these two colors apart, <span style="color: #000000;">using only thin crowded text,</span></span>&#xa0;<strong><span style="color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ff0000;">&#xa0;t</span></span></strong><span style="color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #ff0000;"> h a n &#xa0; &#xa0;t h e s e&#xa0;</span></span><span style="color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #008000;"> t w o &#xa0; c o l o r s</span></span><span style="color: #ffffff;"><span style="background-color: #008000;"> </span></span>, using nice spread-out&#xa0;color blocks.</li><li>Remember, confusing colors is not the same thing as not seeing that color exists. If you put a colorful thing on a white background, we can probably tell it's there. (Probably.) We just may not know what it is.</li><li>If we get a color wrong, just correct us! But, like, also keep in mind that this has happened about a million times in our lives and we may not find it as hilarious as you do.</li></ul><p>That's all there is to it, really.</p><h2>Wait, I think I might be colorblind!</h2><p>Cool! Luckily, it's super easy to test for. <a href="http://enchroma.com/test/instructions/">This page</a>&#xa0;(made by the same people who make those glasses)&#xa0;can tell you if you're colorblind, and what sort of colorblindness you have.</p><h2>Actually, whether or not you're colorblind, you're super colorblind.</h2><p>Even if all the cones in your eyes function perfectly, you can't see anything close to "all" of the colors. You see significantly more than I do, just like I see significantly more than a person with a more severe visual defect. But your eyes still round infinite wavelengths of light in the visual spectrum into just a few million colors.</p><p>Some people, known as tetrachromats, have extra cones in their eyes and see millions more colors within the same wavelengths&#xa0;that you see. Concetta Antico, a tetrachromat, <a href="http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2015/02/what-like-see-a-hundred-million-colors.html">described her vision&#xa0;to New York Magazine</a>&#xa0;like this:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>I see colors in other colors. For example, I'm looking at some light right now that's peeking through the door in my house. Other people might just see white light, but I see orange and yellow and pink and green and some magenta and a little bit of blue. So white is not white; white is all varieties of white. You know when you look at a pantone and you see all the whites separated out? It's like that for me, but they are more intense. I see all those whites in white but I resolve all these colors in the white, so it's almost like a mosaic. They are all next to each other but connected. As I look at it, I can differentiate different colors. I could never say that's just a white door, instead I see blue, white, yellow-blue, gray ...</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>...&#xa0;<span>Let's take mowed grass. Someone who doesn't have this genetic variation might see bright green, maybe lights or darks in it. I see pinks, reds, oranges, gold in the blades and the tips, and gray-blues and violets and dark greens, browns and emeralds and viridians, limes and many more colors - hundreds of other colors in grass. It's fascinating and mesmerizing. &#xa0;</span></span></p><p><span><span>Try to picture that. Really imagine what it's like. See how impossible that is? That's what it's like when you describe your color vision to us.</span></span></p><p><span><span>And there are animals with even more cones that can see even more colors in our wavelengths, as well as many creatures that can see deep into the ultra-violet and infra-red ranges. Radiolab <a href="http://www.radiolab.org/story/211119-colors/">dedicated a beautiful segment&#xa0;</a>to this phenomenon.</span></span></p><p>I hope this was helpful for some of you poor&#xa0;color-sighted folks out there. If not, oh well!
