It is not everyday that two A-list celebrities come together. In the last two years, this rare occurrence has happened at least thrice, bringing to the fore a class of power couples. And, their combined brand value can top the charts.  Hitting the nail before they turn a married couple, e-commerce giant Flipkart roped Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor for a national campaign. They play the role of a couple too where Alia is seen commenting on Ranbir’s clothing style. Alia who is high on successes like Raazi and Gully Boy makes more from brand endorsements, as compared to Ranbir who had a spate of flops before the release of Sanju this year. The 26-year-old actor, Alia Bhatt has collaborated with some of the best brands in India and is the first celeb to promote Uber Eats, Nokia and Make My Trip. She reportedly <a href="https://www.marketingmind.in/reasons-why-alia-bhatt-has-become-popular-in-brand-endorsements/">has a brand value </a> of $98,10,700. Ranbir Kapoor reported has a brand value of ₹1.39 billion, according to Duff and Phelps' Celebrity Brand Valuation Report 2018. But together, both their fortunes could change and so will that of the brands they would be a part of.  The star couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have around 40 brands together in their kitty. And some of them are competitors. For instance, Ranveer Singh endorses Make My Trip while Deepika promotes GoIbibo. But electronics brand Lloyd also brought them together to do what they do best--as newlyweds to endorse the company’s household electronics like air conditioners, LED TVs among others. According to a report by ESP properties, “Their successive blockbusters and the buzz around their wedding for months before the event, was enough to earn them a spot in the top 3 brand favorite stars of the year.” Ranveer Singh earns over ₹840 million from more than 20 brand he endorses. He charges between ₹30-40 million to ₹40 million per advertisement. Ranveer Singh earned ₹626 millions alone in 2017 from brand endorsement, said Forbes list of 100 celebrities for 2017. Deepika Padukone is the top earner in brand endorsements amongst actresses. She promotes 18 brands and earns ₹750 million. Apart from the celebrities who were featured in last year’s study, this year, we have Ayushmann Khurrana (rank 10), Tiger Shroff (rank 17) and Rohit Sharma (rank 20) with a cumulative brand value of USD 87.5 million,” said Aviral Jain, Managing Director, Duff &amp; Phelps. “The industry saw a wave of new faces and concepts with the effective usage of digital media to capitalize on millennials and Gen Z. Even though brands changed their approach of sticking to established actors by roping in new faces, overall the industry managed to stay on course with the perfect blend of traditional and new. The new pedigree of stars also ventured into investments by emerging as ‘starvestors’ (star investors), thus infusing capital in brands that resonated with their values,” Jain added. Mumbai, Feb 5 () Actor Akshay Kumar has pipped Deepika Padukone in celebrity brand ranking with the Khiladi star's value rising to USD 104.5 million, according to a report released on Wednesday. Cricketer Virat Kohli continues to hold the top spot with a brand value of USD 237.5 million, Duff and Phelps' celebrity brand valuation report for 2019 said. Padukone, who was ranked at number two last year, has slipped to number three with a brand valuation of USD 93.5 million, while Kumar has replaced her as the second most-valued celebrity, the report said. Padukone invited the ire of a lot of people by showing up at protests at JNU against a violent attack on students, while Kumar was in the news for interviewing Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his landslide win in the general elections. Both Padukone and Kumar had a slew of popular releases during the year. Padukone shares the number-three spot with actor-husband Ranveer Singh, who was ranked at number four in the year-ago period. Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan continue to hold on to their number six and five spots, with brand values of USD 55.7 million and USD 66.1 million, respectively, it said. Aamir Khan has had a major slip in ranking by brand value to 16th place with a total value of USD 24.9 million, as against 11th place in the year-ago period. Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan's rank has also slipped to eighth from the seventh rank in the year-ago period with a value of USD 42.5 million, and has swapped placed with Alia Bhatt, whose current value is USD 45.8 million. There have been new entrants in the top-20 list like Article-15 actor Ayushman Khurana at rank 10 with a value of USD 40.3 million, Jackie Shroff's actor son Tiger at rank 17 with a USD 24.2 million brand worth and cricketer Rohit Sharma at 20th rank. The top-20 celebrity brands are from cricket and films and are collectively worth over USD 1.1 billion. The <a href="https://www.livelaw.in/news-updates/dream-11-bombay-hc-dismisses-pil-fantasy-league-145760">High Court</a> dismissed a PIL filed by an advocate and said that Dream11 is a game of skill and not of chance. The PIL had claimed that online fantasy league game encourages gambling. This comes after the Punjab and Haryana High Court too declared the Dream11 format of fantasy sports as legal. The order said that the game requires considerable skill and judgment. This order was further ratified by the Supreme Court. The Indian fantasy gaming industry is projected to be a ₹118.8 billion market by 2023. While cricket holds the majority of the market share, other games are picking up too. Dream11 has had a great run this year – from turning a unicorn with a billion Dollar valuation, in April 2019. Its users also swelled to 67 million after IPL in 2019, and was also the official partners for the league. With the ongoing World Cup, Dream11 aims to gain even more. “We expect to have 90 million users by the end of the World Cup and 100 million by the end of 2019,” Bhavit Sheth, COO, Dream11 had told Business Insider in an interview earlier. The Rhiti Group, manages M.S Dhoni has confirmed the deal but did not comment on details. According to Arun Pandey, the chairman of the firm, “M S Dhoni has signed a mulyi-year endorsement deal with <keyword id="6391475" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="coca-cola">Coca-Cola</keyword>’s Powerade. He has over 30 brand associations presently.” Dhoni’s previous soft drink endorsement deal with Pepsi Co ended in 2016. In the 11-year old association, the cricketer endorsed both Pepsi Cola and Lay’s chips. He was also the face of campaigns like ‘Oh Yes Abhi’ and ‘Change The Game’. Coca Cola has planned a multimedia campaign featuring Dhoni and Powerade. This drink will compete directly with PepsiCo’s Gatorade. Dhoni’s brand value and endorsements had slumped after he retired from test cricket in 2014. A 2018 celebrity brand valuation report by global valuation and corporate finance advisory firm <a href="https://brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/marketing/ms-dhoni-makes-a-come-back-to-the-land-of-softdrinks-to-endorse-powerade/69818482">Duff &amp; Phelps</a> estimated Dhoni's brand value at $26.9 million, twelfth in celebrity brand value. The 37-year-old’s brand value saw a resurgence in past two years. Industry experts are of the <a href="https://brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/marketing/ms-dhoni-makes-a-come-back-to-the-land-of-softdrinks-to-endorse-powerade/69818482">opinion</a> that Dhoni, widely believed to be playing his last World Cup, is a brand that has revived with a different niche. Dhoni, who captained India in to win the 2011 World Cup, is learnt to charge about ₹50-80 million a year for endorsements. This year, the cricketer signed endorsement deals with bus-ticketing platform major redBus, and toothpaste brand Colgate. Last year, he signed more than 10 endorsement deals including <a href="https://brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com/tag/mastercard">Mastercard</a>, BharatMatrimony, German cybersecurity company WardWiz, fantasy sports platform Dream11, <a href="https://brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com/tag/Snickers">Snickers</a> chocolates, online pharmacy Netmeds, domain registrar and web hosting company <a href="https://brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com/tag/GoDaddy">GoDaddy</a>, luxury watch <keyword id="742777" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panerai">Panerai</keyword>, and automotive batteries and solar applications brand LivFast. He also endorses his own sportswear brand Seven promoted by Rhiti Sports, launched in February 2016, and a chain of gyms by the name of SportsFit World, which he started in 2012.

Dhoni to power Coca Cola’s Powerade; signs 3 year endorsement deal

When the cricketer Dhoni is in distress, the brand Dhoni can’t escape the impact. Recently, Justice Lodha committee banned two teams–Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the Indian ODI skipper, MS Dhoni being a part of CSK was close to the team owner. 
 
But would this banning affect the image of Dhoni? 
 
Dhoni has retired from Test cricket and his latest performance as ODI captain was poor, as per a news report by The Economic Times. 
 
Yet, Dhoni endorses 18 brands, many of them major like Pepsi, Reebok, TVS, Boost and Star Sports. His reported endorsement fees, say industry observers, is between Rs 10 crore and Rs 12 crore per brand, higher than that commanded by India test captain Virat Kohli. 
 
Forbes had listed him as the world's fifth most valuable sportsperson brand in 2014 as the world's fifth most valuable sportsperson brand, valued at $ 20 million. And only last week, he was named as the world's ninth most marketable in a study by London School of Marketing, the ET report confirms. 
 
Corporate executives (CXOs) and experts ET spoke to said although the lack of marketeable cricketers means Dhoni's brand will retain some pull, endorsement rates can get lower when contracts are renewed. Rates may come down by as much as 25% to 30%. 
 
ET spoke to a dozen major brands endorsed by Dhoni. PepsiCo, Reebok and Glaxo SmithKline, the manufacturers of Boost, did not comment on the matter. Questions sent to Orient Electric, Ashok Leyland, Gulf Oil and Star Sports were not answered. But off record, some CXOs closely involved with marketing Dhoni for their companies were of the view that the once shining brand is starting to lose its sheen. 
 
The chief executive of a major brand Dhoni endorses said the cricketer is certainly losing his brand value. "He's not playing Tests and that impacts his valuation. 
 
The fact that he's closely associated with N Srinivasan is cause for discomfort as well," a CEO told a financial daily. "The lack of marketeable criketers means that our contract will continue", the top executive said, "but we will negotiate lower endorsement terms". 
 
"Dhoni's brand value will go down by 50% after this (the CSK team suspension). The fact that he's associated with India Cements is a huge setback. His continued silence hasn't helped either," Shailendra Singh, joint managing director of sports and media entertainment firm Percept told the ET. 
 
He added that Dhoni's cricket career has been on the decline. "The fact that he resigned from Test cricket in the middle of a series too hasn't gone down well with brands he's associated with," he said.

What helped the CRED series become so popular was the fact that for once, we saw celebrities not taking themselves seriously and it came like a breath of fresh air. It also easily broke the clutter by not featuring a cricket celebrity. And this year too, CRED has taken an unconventional approach. We can't wait to see what else the brand has in story for us. CRED has also signed a three-year deal with IPL, which began in 2020.

And when the Indian Premier League began in 2008, the two 22-year olds realised that it was time to turn their obsession into a business – and the fantasy gaming site Dream11 was born. Today, 11 years later, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has declared Dream11 as the official partner for fantasy games during the upcoming season of the IPL, and arguably the country’s biggest sports icon right now, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is their brand ambassador. Now, the founders are gunning for the coveted tag of a unicorn – a company that is worth at least a billion dollars. With the IPL and the cricket World Cup lined-up over the next three months, 2018 may be a big year for Dream11. “We expect to have 90 million users by the end of the World Cup and 100 million by the end of 2019.” Sheth told Business Insider. In <a href="https://www.vccircle.com/steadview-capital-may-make-dream11-india-s-first-gaming-unicorn/">March 2019</a>, there have been reports about Steadview Capital looking at infusing $100 million into the startup taking its valuation to over $1.3 billion and making it India’s first gaming unicorn. Dream11 has 52 million users who compete with each other on the site. The users assemble players from different teams to create a virtual line-up of their own, alongside an actual match. Based on the performance of their chosen players on the field, the virtual gamers are ranked on the virtual leaderboards. “We started off as a free-to-play site, trying to get revenue through ads. Three years into the business, we saw that with a niche product like ours which doesn’t have millions of page views, ads were just hampering the user experience on our app,” said Sheth. So, they changed the format. They allowed users to select their players not for the entire season at one go but only for daily matches. But they still hadn’t solved the question - how do they make money? That’s when they came up with the idea to ask users to pay and then they would pool in the money and award the winner. “But we weren’t sure if it was legally allowed in India. After consulting with many lawyers and one-and-a-half years of research, we knew that since this was a game of skill, there were no legal issues,” said Sheth. The Punjab and Haryana high court declared the Dream11 format of fantasy sports as legal and one that requires considerable skill and judgment. This judgement was further ratified by the Supreme Court When in 2014, Dream11 raised its first round of funding they still had just 300,000 users. But thanks to the popularity of IPL, today they stand at 52 million users. In fact, after signing former Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni as their brand ambassador, just during the 2018 IPL their user base went from 20 million to 40 million. Their initial 10 million users were dominated by Tier 1 cities but now 50% of their traffic comes from Tier 2,3 and 4 cities. “As 22-year-olds we started this business, engineers who didn't know anything about business. We didn't even in our wildest imagination think that we will have over 52 million users in such short time, with only a team of over 200 managing them and be at this scale,” said Sheth.
