Tricolour was hoisted first in Andaman says PM Modi as he names 21 islands after Param Vir Chakra awardees

Varthaman was promoted from Wing Commander to the rank of Group Captain earlier this month. He was honoured with Vir Chakra, India's third-highest war time gallantry medal, by the President in an investiture ceremony. Varthaman was captured by the <keyword id="103274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pakistani-army" source="Orion">Pakistani Army</keyword> on February 27, 2019 after his MiG-21 Bison jet was shot down in a dogfight with the Pakistani jets. Before his jet was hit, he downed a Pakistani F-16 fighter. The Balakot airstrike was carried out against the terror camps at Balakot of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in response to the deadly Pulwama attack that claimed the lives of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. It was the first aerial assault carried out by India in Pakistan after the 1971 India-Pakistan war. On February 26, 2019 around 3.30 a.m. 12 Mirage 2000 fighter jets crossed the Line of Control (<keyword id="6355098" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="loc" source="Orion">LoC</keyword>) and destroyed the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Pakistan's Balakot. The Balakot airstrike demonstrated India's prowess to retaliate to Pakistan's sinister intentions. Codenamed as 'Operation Bandar', the airstrike was conducted by the seventh and ninth squadrons of the <keyword id="15141" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-air-force" source="Orion">Indian Air Force</keyword>. After the strike, over two dozen fighter planes, including F-16s left Pakistani bases aiming to hit the Indian military installations. But the Indian Air force in anticipation of such an attack was ready and aerial dogfight ensued. It ended with Wing Commander Varthaman, shooting down an F-16 fighter plane of Pakistan and getting hit in the process. Varthaman exited safely but was captured. Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced the capture and India demanded his unconditional and safe return. Back then, the US played a role in the release of the officer, who safely returned to India. New Delhi, Jun 16 () Maha Vir Chakra awardee Lt Col (retd) Raj Mohan Vohra has died due to COVID-19, senior officials said on Tuesday. The decorated officer breathed his last on June 14, they said. "He was admitted to a private hospital for a stent procedure. He died on June 14 due to COVID-19 infection," a senior official said. His cremation was held on Sunday, the official said. The Maha Vir Chakra is the country's second-highest gallantry award. It is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy whether on land, at sea or in the air. The tableau depicted LCA Tejas and Su-30 flying over the IOR, and a C-295 transport aircraft being flown by women aircrew in the cockpit. The GSAT- 7A positioned on the tableau represents the IAF's incorporation of space technology in its operations. The tableau showed that IAF has been at the forefront of rendering humanitarian aid, both within and across borders. Another highlight of the parade was the Veterans' Tableau on the theme 'Rashtra Nirmaan: Pehle Bhi, Ab Bhi, Aage Bhi aur Hamesha'. T-90 Bhishma, NAG Missile, Surface-to-Air Missile, drone jammer displayed at Kartavya Path

The Bombay High Court on Monday refused to grant bail to former policeman Pradeep <keyword id="445" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="sharma" source="Orion">Sharma</keyword>, who is arrested in connection with the <keyword id="448875" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="antilia" source="Orion">Antilia</keyword> bomb scare case and for the killing of businessman Mansukh Hiran. A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and R N Laddha said it was dismissing Sharma's appeal challenging a special court order rejecting his bail plea. Sharma had approached the high court last year challenging a February 2022 order of a special NIA court rejecting his bail plea. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has alleged that Sharma had helped his former colleague <keyword id="1006310" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sachin-waze" source="Orion">Sachin Waze</keyword> to eliminate Hiran. On February 25, 2021, an explosives-laden SUV was found near industrialist <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>'s residence 'Antilia' in south Mumbai. Businessman Hiran, who was in possession of the SUV, was found dead in a creek in neighbouring Thane on March 5 last year. Sharma was arrested in the case in June 2021 and is presently in judicial custody. While the former policeman claimed there was no evidence against him, the NIA has alleged that he was a main conspirator in the "cold-blooded murder" of Hiran, who was considered a weak link in the larger conspiracy of terrorising the Ambani family. "Pradeep Sharma was an active member of a gang that had conspired to terrorise people, including the Ambani family, and murdered Mansukh Hiran as he was a weak link in the conspiracy," the NIA had said. The probe agency claimed that Hiran was aware of the whole conspiracy (parking of explosive-laden vehicle outside Antilia) and the accused (Sharma and <keyword id="1409950" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="waze" source="Orion">Waze</keyword>) apprehended that he (Hiran) would "spill the beans", which would then make it difficult for Sharma and Waze to continue to "yield the fruits" of the larger conspiracy. (Eds: Adds details) New Delhi, Jun 16 () Maha Vir Chakra awardee Lt Gen (retd) Raj Mohan Vohra has died due to COVID-19, senior officials said on Tuesday. The decorated officer breathed his last on June 14, they said, adding that he was 88. "He was admitted initially to a private hospital for stent procedure. He died on June 14 due to COVID-19 infection," a senior official said. His cremation was held on Sunday, the officials said. Then a lieutenant colonel, Vohra commanded the elite Hodson's Horse in the Shakargarh Sector during the Indo-Pak War of 1971 and was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his conspicuous bravery and leadership. During the Battle of Basantar, the regiment came under heavy fire from the enemy and faced huge resistance, but 27 enemy tanks were destroyed under his able command, the officials said. The Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) is the country's second highest gallantry award. It is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of enemy whether on land, at sea or in the air. Vohra had received the coveted award in 1972. In his long and illustrious career, he tenanted many prestigious appointments, including GOC-in-C Eastern Command and GOC 31 Armoured Division, the official said. Born in 1932 in Shimla, the veteran officer was from the pioneer course of the National Defence Academy, and was commissioned into the 14 Horse in December 1952, they said. President of Ex-Services League Ladakh Region, Retired Subedar Major honorary Captain Sonam Murup while recalling his days in Ladakh Scouts Regiment of the Indian Army, told IANS that Indian defence is no longer what it used to be in 1962. "There were deficiencies during the 1962 war and we lost our land, but now the Indian Army, <keyword id="6354954" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-force">Air Force</keyword> and Navy are now fully trained, armed and equipped. But more than that, now we have roads, bridges and other infrastructure which we did not have earlier," the retired soldier said. Disapproving the "Hindi-Chini bhai bhai" (Indian-Chinese brothers) slogan, which was popular before the 1962 war, Murup said, "We will not say it anymore. Instead, all the soldiers will raise only 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' (Mother India live long) and Ladakhi 'Ki Ki So So Lhargyalo' (Victory to God) slogans and defeat China. This enthusiasm is alive, not only among serving soldiers, but retired servicemen too. Even at the age of 84, our soldiers of Ladakh Scouts have the strength and competence to fight back." Reminiscing about his experiences as a soldier, Murup, who had joined the Army in 1977 and retired in 2009, said that he and others would walk along with porters and ponies, carrying arms, ammunition, rations and other supplies, through the treacherous Shyok river, also known as 'the river of death' for its difficult terrain and furious flow. Shyok is a tributary of the Indus river that flows through northern Ladakh and enters Gilgit-Baltistan, covering over 550 km. "Sometimes, we used to cross even five times during a day. In all, we used to cross the river 118 times. It resulted in scraping off our skin, but we would keep moving on. It would take us 12 to 15 days, even till the 1980s," Murup said. But things have changed today. "The current government made roads and bridges. The Galwan valley bridge got completed in 2019. Now in a day or two, soldiers can reach there comfortably. No need of ponies or horses or porters to carry arms and rations anymore," the ex-serviceman said. At that point, he argued, China was self-assured but now they are worried that there is no weakness in the Indian Army's deployment and infrastructure in the region. "That is why they are expressing their frustration with aggression. We should not trust China at all," the retired soldier of the Ladakh Scouts said. Ladakh Scouts regiment, known as 'Snow Warriors' and 'eyes and ears' of the Indian Army, has five combat battalions in Ladakh. Specialists of mountain warfare, Ladakh Scouts is one of the most decorated regiments of the Indian Army, with over 300 gallantry awards and citations, including Maha Vir Chakras, Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakras. Vice President of Ex-Services League Ladakh Region, Subedar Rigzin Nawang, recalls that General S.S. Grewal had long ago proposed that the Ladakh Scouts should be expanded from five battalions to 20. The Subedar had joined the Army in 1970 and retired in 1999. He participated in the 1971 war and in the 1999 Kargil war too. "There is a huge advantage to that because Ladakh Scouts are native, already acclimatized and can be deployed as and when necessary without any delay caused due to the movement of the troops from the plains of India. Soldiers from other parts of our country need a day or two to acclimatize and sometimes bad weather causes further delay of the troops," Nawang said. It was because of his mountain warfare skills and knowledge, that as a young soldier Nawang had crossed the LoC and entered Pakistan both in 1971 and 1999. Even as India has made it clear that Chinese have not entered the Indian territory or captured any posts, on the ground in Ladakh, the veterans and porters who have stood to external aggressions in the past say if need be they are ready to fight for the country at the Line of Actual Control (LAC). In Ladakh veterans who played a pivotal role in the previous escalations with China and Pakistan are reminiscing about the times gone by. They say they may not be in service anymore but their passion to serve the country remain strong as ever. Veteran Honorary Captain Tashi Chhepal contributed in evicting the Pakistanis from the mountain peaks during the Kargil conflict. A feat that won him the Vir Chakra. He says the current stand off has stark similarities with the 1999 Kargil conflict. He is angry about the loss of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan valley. "During 1962 China war, we didn't have enough equipment, but we have a very advanced army," he says. "It is sad though that soldiers got killed in the Galwan Valley." He said the soldiers should have the full liberty to use arms when they come under such an aggression. "If the jawans don't use these weapons when they are getting killed, when would they?" he asked. Ladakhis have scripted stories of bravery and valour fighting as regular soldiers or as volunteers helping to move materials on the mountain tops and stand against the adversary be it the Indo-China war of 1962 or the Kargil conflict of 1999. Retired Hawaldar Tsering Angdus said he served the army for 22 years and has patrolled the Galwan Valley and other sensitive spots at the LAC in the past. He says China always had its eyes fixed on the Indian territories at the LAC but India will never allow the Chinese to infringe on its sovereignty. He says if orders come by he will fight shoulder to shoulder with the army. "I am trained in using weapons, whenever need arises I would be ready to serve my country again on the frontline," he said.
