While <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baby-boomer-retire-medicare-benefits-living-abroad-germany-healthcare-2024-7">some Americans</a> are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-military-veteran-raised-kids-germany-retired-texas-social-security-2024-8">returning to the US</a> for retirement, Park said he's certain he's retiring in Germany. He said the free public healthcare and quality of life are better than in the US.<h2 id="5414171f-4f3f-42f0-91f7-2585ddb42227">A stint in Germany sets the stage for later life</h2>As an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania in the early 1980s, Park met Kerstin, who is German and was visiting the US on vacation.Park took a break from college and lived with Kerstin in Munich in 1982 and 1983 before returning to the US to finish his studies. The two married in Baltimore in 1983.Park transferred to Johns Hopkins University and graduated with bachelor's degrees in English and German in 1986.At that time, Park and Kerstin had their first daughter. Park worked as a movie theater manager for a few years and then landed a job at Giant Food, a grocery store in the Baltimore area, where he worked for 13 years.In 2002, Park earned his Master's in education from Towson University in Maryland and taught English at a middle school for three years.In 2005, when Park and Kerstin's youngest daughter graduated from high school, they moved to Germany. Kerstin's family had lived in Munich, and their newly established empty nest made it easier to go abroad.<h2 id="4134d731-43d1-4c6c-bad9-28d6c8badcb7">Homeownership and renting in Germany</h2>Park and his wife moved abroad without job offers, but he said they found employment soon after arrival. Park found work as an English language coach, and Kerstin — who studied biology — found a job at the Gene Center Munich.They lived in Munich for nearly a decade, renting an apartment for the first five years. He said rent was about $720 (€650) a month. In 2010, they bought an apartment in Munich for about $243,850 (€220,000).Homeownership in German cities is rare compared to the countryside, Park said, and Munich is one of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.jll.de/en/trends-and-insights/research/housing-market-overview#:~:text=Munich%20remains%20the%20most%20expensive,cities%20are%20much%20more%20moderate.">pricier housing markets</a>.In 2014, Kerstin received a job opportunity at the Max Planck Institute in Göttingen, which is located in central Germany. They moved to Göttingen but still own and rent out their apartment in Munich. Today, Park works as an English lecturer at the University of Göttingen.<h2 id="6be99e2d-9786-49db-9e4b-f70e9ebd2f18">Life in a bucolic village near Göttingen</h2>After renting in Göttingen for four years, Park and his wife moved to Ebergötzen, a small village south of the city with a population of less than 2,000 people.Park said it's a beautiful, bucolic village, and he enjoys the outdoorsy lifestyle. When they moved to Ebergötzen in 2018, they bought a house for about $498,780 (€450,000).The property has a barn, pear trees, apple trees, and a walnut tree. The village has a great bakery and butcher shop, and things feel more calm than in the US, Park said."Everything's just a little bit more personal, or smaller, or a little bit old-fashioned, compared to American life," Park said.Park takes the bus to work daily, which he said runs every 30 minutes and is efficient — he said he hasn't driven a car in about 15 years.Attracted to Park's ease of life in Germany, his two daughters both moved to the country in the past decade. In fact, one daughter, her husband, and their three children live with Park and Kerstin in their house in Ebergötzen, along with three dogs, four guinea pigs, and chickens.<h2 id="adfb0d2e-e50e-4888-8d0e-d915da6f129a">Retiring in Germany for healthcare and quality of life</h2>In Germany, the mandatory retirement age for civil service workers depends on the year they were born. As a university teacher, Park's mandatory retirement will be in August 2027, when he will be 66 years old.He said his wife makes more than he does working in biology, and the couple feels financially stable. He said they hope to be able to pay off their mortgage on the Munich apartment and Ebergötzen house by the time he retires.As a US citizen with a permanent residence visa working at a public university, Park said the healthcare system is efficient and easy for him.He has a public healthcare insurance card and said he doesn't pay anything for care. While in Germany, Park broke his collarbone, had a cataract operation, and had a detached retina that required emergency surgery."In all three cases, there was not a single insurance form I had to fill out and zero out-of-pocket charges," he said. "As far as I can tell, the quality of care was just as good as I would have gotten in the US."Park also said he thinks Germany is better for raising a family than the US. He enjoys watching his grandchildren grow up bilingual, and he said Germany feels much safer than the US, particularly because there isn't the same level of fear around gun violence and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/school-shootings-by-country">school shootings</a>.Park retained his US citizenship and residency, so he's eligible for Social Security. Americans can claim Social Security at 62, but the extent of their benefits varies until they reach their full retirement age, which depends on a person's birth year. For Park, that will be 67. He said he is waiting to collect his benefits to earn the maximum amount.Park said he hasn't been to the US in over a decade because he's conscious of the carbon footprint of flying back and forth across the Atlantic and has plenty of travel options in Europe.His father, who is 97, lives in Baltimore and visits Park in Germany once a year.Park said that while he's lived abroad for nearly two decades, he certainly feels American. William Hersh, M.D., a seasoned professor at Oregon Health &amp; Science University (OHSU), was particularly intrigued by AI's growing influence in his field. As a medical informatics educator, he sought to explore just how well <keyword id="19896272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="generative-AI" source="keywords">generative AI</keyword> could compete with his human students. The results? Surprising, to say the least. <h2>An experiment in education</h2>Hersh’s curiosity led him to conduct an experiment where he pitted six large-language <keyword id="19924380" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-models" source="keywords">AI models</keyword> — including ChatGPT — against students enrolled in his introductory course on biomedical and health informatics. The goal was to see how AI would perform when tasked with the same assessments as his students. The <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41746-024-01251-0">findings</a>, published in npj <keyword id="20320357" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-medicine" source="keywords">Digital Medicine</keyword>, showed that AI models outperformed up to 75% of the class. "This does raise concern about cheating, but there is a larger issue here," Hersh commented. "How do we know that our students are actually learning and mastering the knowledge and skills they need for their future professional work?" <h2>The role of <keyword id="23201889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-in-knowledge-based-learning" source="Orion">AI in knowledge-based learning</keyword></h2>The study analysed the performance of 139 students who took the course in 2023, with AI models tackling multiple-choice questions and short-answer prompts. The AI models scored impressively, landing in the top 50th to 75th percentile. According to Hersh, these results raise essential questions about the future of student assessment, particularly in knowledge-heavy subjects like biomedical informatics. Although the AI excelled in this particular course, Hersh was quick to point out that generative models might not fare as well in more hands-on or participatory academic settings, where critical thinking and complex skills development are vital. For Hersh, this balance between mastering knowledge and applying it in real-world scenarios is at the heart of <keyword id="19918893" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medical-education" source="keywords">medical education</keyword>. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113364057" title="AI is entering classrooms in Italy, new learning tools to be tested in 15 classrooms across four regions" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> <h2>A new era for medical students</h2>The AI's performance has stirred up an age-old debate in the academic community: how much information should students be expected to memorise versus being able to access through technological tools? Hersh recalls a time in medical school when one of his attending physicians insisted that every doctor should carry all medical knowledge "in their head." Even back then, Hersh saw the limitations of such an approach. "The knowledge base of medicine has long surpassed the capacity of the human brain to memorise it all," he noted, emphasising the importance of making smart use of available technology. <h2>Striking the right balance </h2>Despite the impressive capabilities of AI, Hersh remains confident that medicine — and most academic disciplines — will always require a "human touch." Critical decision-making, nuanced judgement calls, and compassionate patient care cannot be fully replaced by machines. "There are a lot of things that healthcare professionals do that are pretty straightforward, but there are those instances where it gets more complicated and you have to make judgement calls," Hersh said. "That's when it helps to have that broader perspective." As fall classes approach, Hersh isn’t worried about AI encouraging cheating. His solution? Continuously updating the curriculum and ensuring that assessments go beyond what AI can quickly retrieve. "In any scientific field, there are new advancements all the time," he remarked. "Large-language models aren’t necessarily up to date on all of it." Hersh’s experiment underscores the broader implications of <keyword id="8581687" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-in-education" source="Orion">AI in education</keyword>. While AI has the potential to assist in areas such as medical knowledge recall, it cannot — and should not — replace the critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and human interaction that healthcare professionals need to succeed. "They're scared to operate."Peeperkorn has visited Gaza on numerous occasions since Israel ordered civilians to evacuate to the south, specifically to the city of Rafah, back in October. Despite trying several strategies to make himself more appealing to employers, he's been unable to find work in the tech and finance industries ever since.Jared received <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-consider-before-you-sign-severance-contract-labor-lawyer-2023-4">severance pay</a> for three months and then started collecting unemployment benefits, he told Business Insider via email. But this eventually came to an end: In the state of New York, where he resides, one can only receive unemployment checks for up to <a target="_blank" href="https://access.nyc.gov/programs/nys-unemployment-insurance/#:~:text=You%20can%20get%20up%20to,federal%20and%20state%20tax%20returns.">26 weeks</a>.To save money, Jared, who's in his 30s, said he moved his family to a more affordable area of New York. To make up for his lost income, he started selling some of his stock market investments and in recent months, has begun withdrawing some money from his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/401k-early-withdrawal">401(k)</a>. While the unemployment rate remains <a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/UNRATE">low</a> compared to historical levels, it's<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unemployment-rate-job-growth-interest-rate-cuts-federal-reserve-recession-2024-9"> ticked up</a> in recent months. Monthly hires as a share of overall employment levels have been <a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/JTSHIR">hovering</a> at lows not seen in a decade, excluding a temporary dip in 2020. The ratio of job openings to unemployed people — an indicator of job availability — has declined considerably over the past two years.What's more, hiring on LinkedIn was <a target="_blank" href="https://economicgraph.linkedin.com/resources/linkedin-workforce-report-august-2024">down</a> in July compared to the prior year period in 19 of 20 industries measured, including financial services, manufacturing, and healthcare.Jared shared the top strategies he's used to boost his chances in today's job market — and the reasons he thinks his search has been so challenging.<h2 id="e5e21306-953f-436c-8566-4c65aff17395">There could be some discrimination during the hiring process</h2>Jared said he thinks several factors can help explain why his job hunt has been particularly difficult.First, he thinks it's a "challenging job market" right now, particularly in the tech, finance, and consulting industries where he's largely been applying — he said the tech industry has been his primary focus.Some companies in these sectors have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/layoffs-sweeping-us-these-are-companies-making-cuts-2024">laid off workers</a> and cut back hiring — resulting in more competition for fewer roles. Jared said he also thinks the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dell-workers-layoffs-reaction-ai-restructuring-jobs-tech-2024-8">adoption of AI</a> has allowed some companies to operate "a little leaner" with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-reduce-employee-headcount-this-year-ceo-study-jobcuts-efficiency-2024-1">fewer employees</a>.In addition to other laid-off workers, Jared said he's had to compete with new entrants to the workforce from top schools. He also said having a graduate degree — which he doesn't have — seems to be getting more important."A lot of roles now require advanced graduate degrees and even if they don't, those are the people competing for these roles now."As a Black man, Jared said he thinks it's likely he's also faced some discrimination on his job hunt."In 2020, everybody wanted to hire me because I was Black," he said, pointing to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/big-techs-promises-two-years-after-george-floyds-murder-2022-6">diverse hiring initiatives</a> rolled out in the corporate world following the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/derek-chauvin-stabbed-in-prison-george-floyd-2023-11">murder of George Floyd</a>. "I wonder if other people of color hired during the 2020 hiring spree were also laid off in the last year or so."Despite some progress in recent decades, Black men are still <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/black-men-employment-progress-hurt-incarceration-discrimination-work-experience-2024-8">less likely to be working</a> than white, Asian, and Hispanic/Latino men. As of July, about 81% of Black men between the ages of 25 and 54 were working: The other three groups were all between 87.5% and 89.5%.Jared said he also suspects that being a Black man has sometimes worked against him during job interviews."Between finance and tech, most of my interviewers are Asian or white," he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/black-men-employment-progress-hurt-incarceration-discrimination-work-experience-2024-8">said</a>, adding, "I do feel like there are a lot of prejudices working against me but there's nothing I can do to change the way the world works."Jared said he has good reason to suspect biases can impact the hiring process. Earlier in his career, he said he was the deciding vote on a hiring decision between a Black and Asian candidate. He sided with the Black candidate, and he admitted that the candidate's race may have played some role in his choice."I felt like he deserved a chance, but if I were not at that table, it wouldn't have happened for him," he said.<h2 id="35a4ce2a-ef13-4b01-9e31-a1bf42447e1c">Interviewing can be a difficult skill to master</h2>A competitive job market and discrimination during the hiring process aren't the only reasons Jared thinks he's struggled to land a job. He admitted that he hadn't aced every interview.He said interviewing is a skill he's had to develop, and that showcasing his abilities through certain <a target="_blank" href="https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/interviewing/interview-test">interview tests</a> — which don't always mirror actual job tasks — has been challenging at times."I don't have any illusions about my own weaknesses," he said. "I try to get feedback, learn, and correct."While Jared feels he has a pretty good handle on the job market challenges he's facing, he said that sometimes, certain developments can perplex him.For example, he said he had a dinner scheduled with one company to discuss a role, but they canceled it out of the blue."They told me there was 'no cultural fit' although they never met me in person," he said.Additionally, Jared said he interviewed with a company that very strongly hinted that they would be giving him a job offer — but they never did. He said being "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ghosting-job-interview-candidate-work-careers-advice-2022-10">ghosted</a>" by companies has been a common occurrence during his job search."I assume the competition is younger, cheaper, and has advanced degrees and 'looks like a better fit,'" he said.<h2 id="9acc2bca-ce72-4eb8-b95a-ffe6ed83f83d">Referrals and recruiters can help land interviews</h2>Jared has tried various strategies during his job search. He said two strategies in particular have been the most helpful — even if they haven't got him to the finish line just yet.First, he said the best way to land an interview is to have someone <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-linkedin-to-find-a-job-2018-8">refer you</a> for a job at their company."Direct referrals consistently work the best," he said.Getting these referrals has required him to make full use of the professional network he's developed over the years — he said he's been very active on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-linkedin-to-find-new-job-keywords-comparison-2024-4">LinkedIn</a>.Additionally, Jared said connecting with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-find-your-next-job-resources-for-job-hunt-2023-9">recruiters</a> has helped him land interviews and give himself a better chance during the hiring process. He said having "long-term relationships" with certain recruiters — who he's kept in touch with even when he wasn't actively searching for a job — has helped expedite this process.While Jared said these strategies have helped him land several interviews, and make it to the final round for a few of them, he's still waiting for a job offer.Over the last year, Jared said he's become less picky about the types of jobs he'd consider. He used to dismiss certain jobs because they didn't pay enough, but he said it's become clear that these <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-switchers-big-pay-raise-some-disappointment-great-resignation-quitting-2024-7">compensation levels</a> are the new normal in his profession."Compensation has definitely shifted lower but it took me a long time to fully appreciate that," he said.Additionally, Jared said he's had companies ask if he would consider relocating to California and the UK. Early on, he decided to focus strictly on New York-based roles, but now, he said he's become more open to moving for a job. He said he contacted the company that inquired about his California interest — he initially withdrew himself from consideration — but was told he'd have to undergo a lengthy waiting period before he could interview again.Jared said that in recent months, he's reached the final round of interviews for two jobs. He was rejected from one and is waiting to hear back from the other. He said he hadn't heard from the company in a couple of weeks."I'm still foolishly hopeful they'll at least give me a response," he said.Are you struggling to find a job? In addition to her regular hours as a physician assistant, she picked up extra shifts at her office and at four or five others.She was free of student-loan debt by the time the pandemic started, but she continued to take extra shifts to pay off her mortgage. "I think at one point, I worked 15 12-hour night shifts in a row," Burton told Insider. "I was exhausted, but we needed people."Even though she paid off her student loans and her mortgage completely, she regrets not <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-in-stocks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">investing in the stock-market earlier</a>. With undergrad and grad school combined, she spent most of her 20s in school or trying to figure out what to do with her student loans in the first place."I missed a lot of the time that other people are usually investing," Burton said. "Even with just smaller amounts of money, there could have been huge progress."<h2>Compound interest means investing sooner is better</h2>"The power of compound interest is why your 20s are prime investing years," said <a href="https://rkcapital.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hannah Whatley</a>, a financial planner at Rather &amp; Kittrell. Compound interest is also known as "interest earned on interest." For example, if you have $1,000 in an account that earns 10% interest each year, you'll have $1,100 at the end of the year. If you keep it in the same account for another year, you'll earn 10% interest on the new balance of $1,100, which means you'll have $1,210 at the end of the year.From there, your investment can grow exponentially over time. But compounding interest can work against you in the context of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-dont-understand-student-loan-terms-interest-2020-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">student loans</a> or credit-card debt.Burton, who coaches other <keyword id="12055589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="healthcare-workers" source="Orion">healthcare workers</keyword> on navigating their personal finances at <a href="https://www.strivewithkristin.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Strive Coaching,</a> has found she isn't alone. Since launching her business, over 350 healthcare professionals have enrolled in her courses, and another 800 have purchased her financial wellness e-books."Almost all of us have six-figure student-loan debt," Burton said of her clients in the healthcare field. "Many of us have debt-to-income ratios of 3-to-1, or 4-to-1, and it's emotionally crushing to have that experience and not have any idea what to do about it. On top of that, we're in training for a long time, and we missed our early investing years."<h2>It's better to start investing late than never</h2>Just because someone isn't able to invest in their 20s doesn't mean they shouldn't invest. Starting in your 30s or 40s, or even in your 50s, can be better than never starting at all. Remember that for most people, investing is a long-term strategy to build wealth for the future, like retirement, and 10 or 15 years is certainly still a long-term target.For anyone just starting to think about investing, Whatley recommended starting with an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/what-is-an-emergency-fund" target="_blank" rel="noopener">emergency savings fund</a> first. An emergency savings fund is three to six months' worth of living expenses stored somewhere easily accessible, like a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/best-high-yield-savings-accounts-rates-right-now" target="_blank" rel="noopener">high-yield savings account</a>, in case of emergencies or job loss.Once the emergency fund is set up, you'll be in a strong financial position to start investing. Regardless of how you invest — perhaps <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-an-index-fund" target="_blank" rel="noopener">index funds</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-an-etf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">exchange-traded funds</a>, or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ira-vs-401k" target="_blank" rel="noopener">retirement accounts</a> — Whatley recommended automating your investments to make it even simpler. A 30-year-old physician assistant who spent 7 years in school missed her 'prime investing years,' and she's not the only one

I appreciated hearing these words of acknowledgment when I was in active duty and certainly in the first few years after I became a civilian. But in the past 18 months, that phrase has started to feel like salt in an open wound. When I got back to the US in 2013 after completing my active-duty service obligation, I started my first civilian job as an emergency room nurse at a hospital in Dallas, Texas. By March 2020, I was the ER director at that same facility. No one knew then to brace for the tidal wave of COVID-19. Frontline <keyword id="12055589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="healthcare-workers" source="Orion">healthcare workers</keyword> were drafted into a war to fight an invisible, elusive, and endlessly morphing enemy, while having limited-to-no supplies, minimal reinforcements, and no end date in sight. I found myself leading "civilian soldiers" into a daily battle for their lives and the lives of their patients.<h2>When I deployed to Afghanistan in September 2012, my mission was always very clear</h2>When a patient arrived at my combat support hospital, regardless of whether they were allied Armed Forces, Afghan civilians, or even hostile combatants, my job was to keep them alive, period. Although the days were hard and repetitive, I made it through knowing that the end of my <keyword id="12553706" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="deployment" source="Orion">deployment</keyword> was in sight and I'd be able to return home.<h2>The fight against COVID has neither a clear enemy not an end date</h2>Triumphs only came in the smallest moments of gratitude, like when a declining patient would stay conscious just long enough to say goodbye to his wife before being intubated. Another small victory was when a COVID-positive patient was able to FaceTime with family from her hospital bed as her daughter gave birth to her first grandchild. But those moments of gratitude and hope quickly vanished when both of those patients died a few days later. COVID casualties weren't just lives lost, they were hope lost as well.It would be unimaginable for a soldier who recently returned from Afghanistan to hear someone say, "Is it even a real war?" Yet there are Americans who still refuse to believe that the fight against COVID is a real battle, even as it visibly decimates families and <keyword id="11897506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="healthcare" source="Orion">healthcare</keyword> workers nationwide. <h2>Working in an ER during COVID-19 felt as if I were on active duty all over again </h2>When you're on active duty, your time is not your own. There's no such thing as the end of a shift — you're dismissed when the mission ends whether that's 7 p.m. or 1 a.m. As an ER director during the pandemic, it was very similar. For over 18 months, I was emailing, calling, and texting with staff, the ER charge nurse, or hospital administration until 10:30 or 11 p.m. every night of the week. I was so consumed by the weight of the work that I had to set an alarm to remind myself to leave the hospital and pick up my kids from daycare. Three to four nights a week, I'd be giving my 3- and 1-year-old a bath with my laptop on my knees and my phone to my ear trying to find ways to move critical ER patients to the already crowded ICU, or to another hospital so my nurses could make space for countless other patients.My 3-year-old son, Cole, would laugh as he splashed me with tub water and yell, "Put your phone down momma, look at all the bubbles!" He didn't understand why I didn't play with him and his sister anymore during bath-time. I couldn't separate from the job, and everyone in my life could feel that the 24/7 COVID-19 mission came first. In July 2021, I left the ER for a career change. Like so many other front line staff and hospital leaders, I took inventory of my priorities and decided to change my mission. Now as a small business owner, I can decide to leave my phone at home and prioritize time with my family, a choice that would have left me feeling anxious and guilty not long ago. <h2>The battle with COVID has been longer and more personal than I imagined</h2>Unlike a deployment tour of duty, there's no date that we can circle on a calendar and think, "If I just make it to this day, then I can go home and rest." Without a light at the end of the tunnel, the spiritual and emotional resilience of healthcare workers is dwindling. My staff fought nonstop against COVID with hardly any time off to heal their minds and bodies. Unlike wars overseas, the battle with COVID-19 is happening in our towns, but the sacrifice is no longer recognized. I'm thanked for volunteering to fight in a war overseas, but my sacrifice is completely overlooked for the hundreds of battles I fought and lost just 10 minutes from my house. I'm thankful that our national pride appreciates veterans for their service; however, I know that I've fought harder, lost more, and been more deeply wounded during my fight against COVID-19 than I ever was during my tour of duty. Next time you meet a healthcare worker, realize that you're meeting a battle-weary soldier who's trying so hard to keep up hope and stay in the fight. And if you are a healthcare worker, know that your wounds are real, your exhaustion is valid, and your sacrifice is honorable.
