From cots, bed sheets and raincoats to large umbrellas and food packets, the agitators are flooded with items from common people, Maity told PTI at the agitation site. "Till 2 pm on Saturday, 3,000 food packets have been served for free to people, not only to the protestors but also to local hawkers, rickshaw-pullers, autorickshaw drivers, journalists and other those who have come to the site to express solidarity with the movement," he said. Prajakta Sikdar, another volunteer who is dividing her time between raising slogans and manning one of the four counters at the protest site, said that till 1.30 pm on Saturday, she had distributed around 600 vegetarian food packets among the people. "Please don't hesitate... Tell me what you want, we have prepared all these packets for you. If you want to have cakes or other refreshments, that is also available," she was heard telling a person. A taxi driver was seen unloading hundreds of packets of food from the vehicle's boot, while three people in another vehicle were seen bringing folding cots to the site. "A well-wisher, who is a teacher of an English medium school in Sodepur, has sent these 400 food packets but she can't identify herself," the taxi driver said while offering a packet to this correspondent. Dibyendu Banerjee, a junior doctor manning the 'Abhaya' Clinic, which has been set up to treat patients at the site, said that till now 350 people, including policemen, have been treated. "People are coming for check-up, treatment and our team of five physicians are attending to everyone and giving medicine for free if needed," he said. From people taking part in the protest to families of hawkers and other locals -- the clinic, named in the memory of the rape-murder victim of R G Kar Hospital -- has been packed with patients since the crack of dawn. "We had opened the clinic three days back. Over 500 people are visiting the clinic every day," Banerjee said. Kolkata: Protesting junior doctors in West Bengal defied a <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> order, asking them to resume work by 5 pm on Tuesday, and said they would continue with their protest till their demands were fulfilled and the rape and murder victim of the <keyword id="22743761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rg-kar" source="keywords">RG Kar</keyword> Hospital was given justice. As the medicos continued to protest for the 32nd day on Tuesday, demanding the removal of the <keyword id="20076432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kolkata-police" source="keywords">Kolkata police</keyword> commissioner and several top <keyword id="20050159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-health-department" source="keywords">state health department</keyword> officials, the state government said Chief Minister <keyword id="19909056" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mamata-banerjee" source="keywords">Mamata Banerjee</keyword> has written to the protesters, inviting them for a meeting at the secretariat to resolve the impasse over the incident. However, the protesting doctors said the mail for the meeting was from the state health secretary, whose resignation they were seeking, and termed it as "insulting". They also said that restricting the number of representatives to attend the meeting to 10 was "humiliating". The top court on Monday directed the protesting resident doctors to resume work by 5 PM on Tuesday, observing that if "there is continued abstention from work, there may be a likelihood of adverse action". Meanwhile, the RG Kar hospital authorities issued notices to 51 doctors, including to senior residents and professors, accusing them of fostering intimidation and disrupting the institution's democratic atmosphere, and summoned them to an inquiry committee on September 11. Asserting that their demands were not met, the protesting doctors defied the apex court's order and said they would continue with their 'cease work' till their demands were fulfilled and the rape and murder victim of the RG Kar Hospital was given justice. "We had asked the state government to remove the Kolkata police commissioner, health secretary, director of health services, and the director of medical education by 5 pm (Tuesday). We are open to discussion," one of the protesting doctors said. The junior doctors began their strike on August 9, hours after the body of the female trainee was found in the seminar room of the hospital. Since then, the protest has escalated, leading to disruptions in healthcare services at state-run hospitals across West Bengal. The state government claimed in the Supreme Court that the strike has resulted in the deaths of 23 patients and has severely impacted the healthcare delivery mechanism. During the day, the protesting doctors marched to 'Swasthya Bhavan' - the headquarters of the health department in Salt Lake - and staged a sit-in outside the office building to press for their demand. The protesters carried brooms and a model human brain while marching towards 'Swasthya Bhavan' in a symbolic bid to "clean up" the state health sector and make the top brass "think" about the plight of the doctors. Taking exception to the "language of the email", the agitating junior medics rejected the CM's invitation for talks at the state secretariat to resolve the impasse over the RG Kar hospital issue. "The language of the communication is not only disrespectful to us doctors, it's downright insensitive. We find no reason to reply to this mail," Dr Debasish Halder, a leader of the protesting doctors who organised a sit-in before the state health department headquarters at 'Swasthya Bhavan' in Salt Lake, said. "Our protests and our 'cease work' will continue," he asserted, indicating yet another night-long sit-in before the state health headquarters. Addressing the media shortly after 7.30 pm from 'Nabanna', Bengal's Minister of State for Health, Chandrima Bhattacharya, claimed that the chief minister had taken a "positive approach" by extending her olive branch to the agitating medics. "The email was sent to the official ID of the Junior Doctors' Front at around 6.10 pm. The chief minister was waiting for the doctors' delegation to come for the meeting. She left her office at 7.30 pm since there was no response from the protesters," Bhattacharya said. In a late evening development, the North Bengal Medical College in Siliguri issued a notification, expelling five third-year MBBS students for allegedly threatening officials and other students. "They are also required to vacate the hostel and leave the medical college premises," it said. Also on Tuesday, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was sent to judicial custody till September 23 by a special CBI court in connection with a financial irregularities case. His security personnel Afsar Ali, medical equipment vendor Biplab Singha, and pharmacy shop owner Suman Hazara, were also remanded to judicial custody until September 23. The accused were previously in CBI custody for eight days, but the investigators did not seek an extension of their remand. "The CBI has already secured large amounts of digital evidence on the alleged crime. We need time to analyse that evidence. We do not need the accused in police custody immediately, but we may seek their custody again later if required," the agency's counsel stated in court. Chaotic scenes unfolded at the Alipore Court premises when Ghosh and the others were produced before the judge. Women lawyers shouted slogans against Ghosh and attempted to block the courtroom exit. They also demanded that the accused "be hanged" for their alleged involvement in abetting the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. The police sought the help of the central paramilitary forces to control the situation.

He said Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal has not resigned, too, which was another demand of the agitating doctors. The protesters have alleged inadequate steps by the police during its probe into the August 9 rape-murder of the young doctor, before the investigation was handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court. The body of an on-duty postgraduate trainee was found in the seminar room of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city. The incident has triggered nationwide outrage. "We believe that many people are being shielded in the case and the truth must come out," another junior doctor at a state-run hospital told PTI. A civic volunteer was arrested shortly after the trainee doctor's body was discovered. The CBI has also arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial misconduct at the medical establishment.

As finding the right talent gets more and more difficult, companies are also investing in their own employees and helping them adapt to the latest technologies – putting them through upskilling or reskilling programmes. “Companies need to rethink on how their employees will work alongside intelligent machines and get them to upskill for newer work profiles, else they will become redundant. Many companies often hold back on upskilling due to budgetary constraints or lack of time . And hence, they are now looking at hiring employees that come some opening balance of AI / ML skills,” said Neeti sharma, senior VP at Teamlease services. A way out would be for AI/ML to be included at the academic level in graduation colleges. “AI/ML will be used across all disciplines. Hence, it should become part and parcel of graduate education. This could be initiated by the government. Also, people should make use of the large number of excellent online courses available on platforms such as Coursera to pick up AI/ML skills,” said Goyal. Picking up the need to bring in these technologies at an academic level, Plaksha university, which has been set up by 50 entrepreneurs, has even partnered with UC Berkeley to bring fellowship programs in AI and ML. The programme called Tech Leaders Fellowship claims to be a first of its kind with a specialization in AI, ML and immersion in real-world applications, industry experience and leadership. “Today, there exist more than 5,000 engineering colleges in India, producing about a million engineering graduates every year. But most engineering education is still quite traditional. Plaksha is aiming to re-imagine technology and engineering education in India and the world,” said Vineet Gupta, founding member of Plaksha University, and co-chair of TLF Program Committee.
