New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI) President <keyword id="6354561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ram-nath-kovind">Ram Nath Kovind</keyword> on Friday rejected the mercy plea of Mukesh Singh, one of the four men convicted in the 2012 <keyword id="6357643" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirbhaya">Nirbhaya</keyword> gangrape and murder case, sources said. The rejection came soon after the Union Home Ministry forwarded the petition to the president on Friday morning. "It's a very good thing. Our hopes have gone up after the disheartening news that the execution might be delayed," the young woman's father told PTI as news came in of the rejection. Mukesh had filed his mercy petition two days ago. The four convicts -- Mukesh (32), Vinay Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) -- were to be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar Jail, a Delhi court had announced on January 7 while issuing their death warrants. However, the Delhi government informed the high court during a hearing that the execution of the convicts will not take place on the day as a mercy plea had been filed by Mukesh.

"If the situation persists, businesses will either delay projects or adjust spends to focus on strategic initiatives essential for future business functions and needs," he added. However, demand from enterprises and service providers for IT investments remains stable so far in Asia-Pacific. Any further worsening of the financial situation will also impact enterprise and service providers' spending. Consumer IT spending (related to purchase of mobiles, tablets, PCs, wearables, and peripherals) slowed in the first half of 2022 because many device purchases have already happened in the last two years to enable work from home or online classes. According to the report, the expectations were that 2022 would not be that great a year. However, due to rising inflation, even the remaining growth prospect is taking a hit. Enterprise IT spending has been stable as businesses continue to protect IT budgets in the short term, the report noted. "Some capital spending is vulnerable along with investments in new projects because the focus will shift to keeping the lights on rather than putting money on new initiatives," it added. However, the willingness and ability to increase IT budgets in line with rising prices is more uncertain today. Consumer IT spending to slide further amid recession fears in Asia-Pacific

The <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> upheld <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword>’s decision and awarded death sentence to four convicts in 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case which shook the entire nation. Supreme Court termed it as a barbaric incident in its order. The top court upheld the death penalty, “taking the serious injuries, the severe nature of offence committed by the convicts.” “Victim's dying declaration is consistent; it has been proved beyond doubt and corroborated. Nature and manner of the crime devastated social trust, falls in 'rarest of rare' category warranting death penalty,” stated the Supreme Court. The Apex Court said aggravating circumstances outweighed mitigating circumstances in the case and the offence created "tsunami of shock". In 2012, six people lured a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist and her male friend onto a bus in Delhi. The six culprits repeatedly raped the girl and beat both of them with a metal bar before dumping them on a road. The girl died two weeks later of her injuries. Four of the convicts- Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh-were sentenced to death while the fifth hanged, Ram Singh, himself in <keyword id="56350" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tihar-jail">Tihar Jail</keyword> in Delhi in 2013. The sixth one was released after three years of jail for being a juvenile. The four convicts had appealed to the top court to consider their death sentence.

<div class="image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">AFP</div></div></div>An Indian court convicted four men Thursday of the gang rape and murder of a physiotherapy student on board a moving bus in a crime that sickened the nation.
Judge Yogesh Khanna said the men, who could now face the death penalty, were guilty of murdering a "helpless victim" as he announced that arguments for sentencing of the four will be held on Wednesday.
"I convict all of the accused," Khanna said.
"They have been found guilty of gang rape, unnatural offences, destruction of evidence... and for committing the murder of the helpless victim."
The four -- Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma -- had all pleaded not guilty to the charges, which included murder, gang rape and theft.
The victim's parents, who wept in court as the verdict was announced, have led the calls for them to be hanged, saying that they could only have closure once the four were executed.
Their 23-year-old daughter, who cannot be named for legal reasons, died of her injuries on December 29 in a Singapore hospital.
Amid emotional scenes outside the courtroom, the lawyer of Mukesh Singh said that his client would launch an immediate appeal.
"My client was simply driving the bus. He confessed fairly that he was driving the bus but he did not know what went on inside," V.K. Anand told reporters.
"We will appeal this verdict in the High Court in a month's time. But we will see what happens tomorrow after arguments and the quantum of punishment."
Mukesh Singh's mother, draped in a beige saree, fell to Anand's feet and broke down in tears outside the courtroom. The lawyer and her husband both tried to pick her up.
A.P. Singh, the lawyer for Akshay Thakur and Vinay Sharma, said both his clients would also appeal.
"We will now go to the High Court with our appeal... This is a political conviction," he told a scrum of reporters.
Any subsequent appeal by the defendants is likely to take years in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>'s notoriously slow legal system.
A juvenile has already been sentenced to three years in a correctional facility, while a fifth adult defendant, bus driver Ram Singh, was found hanging in his prison cell in March while awaiting trial.
"We will not accept anything below the death penalty," the victim's father told AFP from his home in southwestern Delhi in an interview last week.
"If all four are sentenced to death, I can't imagine anything being better than that... We will get closure."
The seven-month trial has been held in a special fast-track court in south Delhi, with more than 100 witnesses called to give evidence, including 85 for the prosecution.
Despite an initial gagging order on the trial, the case has drawn huge interest and about 20 TV trucks were outside the court on Tuesday morning while dozens of journalists queued to get inside.
During the trial, the prosecution produced DNA evidence, the victim's dying testimony and statements from a male companion who was beaten up during the attack.
The victim and her companion had spent the evening watching a movie at a mall in south Delhi when they were picked up by one of the many private buses plying the streets.
But rather than take them home, the group subjected the pair to a horrifying 45-minute ordeal that ended with both of them thrown out of the bus, virtually unconscious and naked.
In an interview ahead of the verdict, the 28-year-old companion told AFP that the assault was beyond a nightmare.
"I never imagined that one human being could treat another so badly," he said.
The student's family were bitterly disappointed with the three-year sentence handed down last month on the youngest defendant, the maximum allowed by law as he was only 17 at the time of the attack.
India has the death sentence for the "rarest of rare crimes", but does not often carry out executions.
The attack sparked weeks of sometimes violent street protests across India with seething public anger about sex crimes against women.
It also led to tougher laws for sex offenders, including the death penalty for rapists whose victims die or are left in a vegetative state.
But savage attacks against women are still reported daily in India's newspapers and the gang rape of a photographer last month near an upmarket area of Mumbai rekindled public disgust.

In doing so he has not only fulfilled his promise to the community that he had made as a presidential candidate in 2020, but also shattered the record of his predecessor Donald Trump who had appointed more than 80 Indian-Americans and his previous boss Barack Obama, who had appointed over 60 Indian-Americans to key positions during his eight years of presidency. More than 40 Indian-Americans has been elected at various state and federal levels including four in the US House of Representatives. While the first-ever presidential appointment was done during the time of Ronald Regan, this time Biden has appointed Indian-Americans to almost all departments and agencies of his administration. "Indian-Americans have been imbued with the sense of seva (service) and this is reflected in their enthusiasm to pursue positions in public service instead of the private sector," Silicon Valley-based entrepreneur, philanthropist and venture capitalist M R Rangaswami told PTI. "The Biden administration has now appointed or nominated the largest group to date and needless to say we are proud of our people and their accomplishments for the United States," Rangaswami said. Rangaswami is founder and head of <keyword id="1530020" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="indiaspora" source="Orion">Indiaspora</keyword>, a US-based global organization for Indian-origin leaders. Indiaspora keeps a track of Indian-origin leaders. Biden, who has maintained a close relationship with the community since his Senator days, often jokes around about his Indian relationship. He made history in 2020 by selecting Indian-origin Kamala Harris as his running mate. The list of Indian-Americans in the White House as compiled by Indiaspora reflects that there would be only a few meetings inside the White House or in Biden's Oval Office that would not have an Indian-American presence. His speech writer is <keyword id="600122" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vinay-reddy" source="Orion">Vinay Reddy</keyword>, while his main advisor on COVID-19 is Dr Ashish Jha, his advisor on climate policy is <keyword id="35801" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sonia-aggarwal" source="Orion">Sonia Aggarwal</keyword>, special assistant on criminal justice is Chiraag Bains, Kiran Ahuja heads the Office of Personnel Management, Neera Tanden is his senior advisor, and Rahul Gupta is his drug czar. Last week when India's Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, hosted a reception at India House on the occasion of Independence Day, Indian-Americans from his administration were representing almost all major branches of the US government. <keyword id="14795772" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="young-vedant-patel" source="Orion">Young Vedant Patel</keyword> is now the Deputy Spokesperson at the Department of State, while Garima Verma is the Digital Director in the Office of the First Lady. According to the list prepared by Indiaspora, more than 40 Indian-Americans have been elected to various offices across the country. Four are in the House of Representatives -- Dr Ami Bera, Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi and Pramila Jayapal. This includes four Mayors.
