Political parties, social activists, and local people of Puthupatti of the Tenkasi district and Paniyankurichi village in Tirunelveli district are up in arms against the <keyword id="509519" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dumping-of-waste" source="Orion">dumping of waste</keyword> from <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword> in their villages. A couple of days back a truckload of waste was burnt at a farm in this panchayat leading to thick black smoke. Anganwadi schools are nearby as also Primary health centres and many people had breathing difficulties." Selvaraj, a local farmer, told IANS that the <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> government should take up this issue with the Kerala government and put an end to the menace of dumping waste from that state into the villages of Tamil Nadu. He said, "The waste disposed of in the open includes liquor <keyword id="6366595" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bottles" source="Orion">bottles</keyword> and plastic waste. The discarded bottles had Malayalam letters on their labels." Idakkal Panchayat has already written a letter to the Tirunelveli district collector on the matter. Panchayat vice president, Dharamaraj told IANS, "A primary school and a silkworm rearing unit is in the area near the farm field where the waste from Kerala is dumped and burnt." <keyword id="7352914" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="L-Murugan">L Murugan</keyword>, the present of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tamil Nadu, is fighting the 2021 state assembly election from the Dharapuram constituency. And, while he was ahead for a while, Murugan lost seat against, Kayalvizhi N by over 1393 votes. This is the fourth time that Murugan has contested an election in his political career. However, this is his first time stepping onto the field after being appointed to the saffron party’s state leadership in March 2020. Murugan had been quite confident about his win, telling reporters that he would come out ahead by at least 10,000 votes prior to counting day. He predicted that he was a shoe in since the DMK candidate was a new face, relatively unknown within the political landscape. Muruugan and Dharapuram seat “Despite my hometown being Paramathi Velur in Namakkal District, I choose to contest in Dharapuram only to uplift its highly deserving segment of people,” Murugan was seen telling reporters repeatedly during his campaign trail. He expects to win by a margin of no less than 50,000 votes. Reacting to the criticism by opposition that he is an outsider to Dharapuram, Murugan said, “Why is DMK president M.K. Stalin is contesting from Kolathur constituency instead of his hometown in Tiruvarur district.” Murugan’s campaign was unconventional Dharapuram is a seat reserved for the scheduled caste. This seat is home to a significant population of Arunathiyars, Pallars, Kuravars and other scheduled communities. In a move to appeal to the characteristic voters of this seat, Murugan has adopted a different campaigning strategy than his usual pitch. With a predominant focus on the villages — he walked most part of the election campaign by foot and took up meetings under tree shades and temple premises. Introduced by the party men to the locals as ‘Namma Aalu’ (our man), he closely interacted with the field workers and laborers enquiring about their problems and difficulties. During the campaigns, he ate with the party men to strengthen the bond and coordination. His supporters said the response they found during the campaign was certainly reassuring. Murugan chose to jump into politics very early in his life. While he was still in college, he was an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) student wing. He unsuccessfully contested the 2011 Tamil Nadu assembly election from Rasipuram constituency, getting only 1,730 votes, which was around 1.07% of the vote share. As <keyword id="6386783" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyclone" source="Orion">Cyclone</keyword> Michaung approaches towards the North Tamil Nadu coast, several areas of <keyword id="12864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chennai" source="Orion">Chennai</keyword> were left inundated due to heavy rainfall and severe <keyword id="52295" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="waterlogging" source="Orion">waterlogging</keyword>. Heavy spell of rain throughout the night has caused waterlogging in the state due to which traffic jams were witnessed in several parts of the city. There was heavy traffic jam in Chennai's Chrompet GST Road following heavy rainfall in the region. Due to heavy rainfall at north-Chennai areas, Vadakarai road from Madhavaram to Sengunram was completely immersed in water. The NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in the city in view of the upcoming cyclone. Due to flooding in Kilyar Bridge near Madhuranthakam, transport to ten villages has been affected. Mahabalipuram-Chengalpattu road is completely flooded and traffic has been cut off. The Indian Meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall in Chennai and surrounding areas for the next 24 hours. As per IMD, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts for the next 24 hours. As per the Met Department " CS MICHAUNG lay centered over Westcentral &amp; adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamilnadu coasts about 110 km east-northeast of Chennai, 190 km southeast of Nellore, 210 km northeast of Puducherry, 310 km south-southeast of Bapatla and 330 km southeast of Machilipatnam at 0530 hrs 4 Dec. Likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify &amp; cross betwn Nellore and Machilipatnam close to Bapatla during forenoon of 5 Dec as SCS." Eleven express trains from Chennai Central were cancelled on Monday after the water level reached the danger mark at Bridge No. 14 between Vyasarpadi and Basin Bridge owing to heavy downpours. "In view of heavy rain in Chennai and the water crossing the danger level in Bridge No. 14 between Basin Bridge and Vyasarpady stations, the trains have been regulated as given below. Please go through and plan your journeys accordingly. We regret the inconvenience caused," the Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai, Southern Railway, posted on X. The trains suspended are "12007 Mysuru Shatabti Express, 12675 Coimbatore Kovai Express, 12243 Coimbatore Shatabti Express, 22625 KSR Bengaluru AC Double Decker Express, 12639 KSR Bengaluru Brindavan Express and 16057 Tirupati Sapthagiri Express."

Puducherry, May 9 () Puducherry Health MinisterMalladi Krishna Rao on Saturday said the Centre has lauded theperformance of the territorial administration in keeping thespread of COVID-19 at bay as there had been only two to threeactive cases of the infection.Talking to reporters here, Rao said the Joint Secretariesof the Union Health Ministry had contacted him seeking toclarify as to whether Puducherry was "really having such asmall number of active cases."The officials also wanted to know whether the figuresfurnished were really "correct."They raised eyebrows largely because of the highincidence of the pandemic in the neighbouring districts ofVillupuram and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, he said.Rao said he had told them that the team work done bydepartments of Health, Police, Revenue and DisasterManagement, Public Health and other line departmentshere has been chiefly responsible for the good achievement ofUnion Territory.He said he had apprised the officials of the meticuloussealing of all main entry routes between Puducherry and TamilNadu besides blocking of all the 85 small routes through whichone can intrude into the Union Territory, enabling theNarayanasamy-government to prevent spread of the infection.Rao further said presently there were only three activecases, one each from Reddiarpalayam, Kutchipalayam andSellipet villages in the state government-run Indira GandhiMedical college hospital, undergoing treatment.Although there were only two cases, on Friday the patientfrom Sellipet was the latest admission.All these three cases had contact tracing history, theMinister said.He said that there should be no extension of ongoinglockout beyond May 17 and hence the cooperation of the peopleis absolutely necessary to adhere to 'social distancing andusing of masks'.Rao said the government was evolving a plan to bring back all those belonging to Puducherry and were residing in otherStates.Secretary to Health Prashant Kumar Panda who was alsopresent said that there should be considerable increase in thenumber of people downloading 'Aarogya Sethu' apps in theirmobiles as the present number was 'very small'.Meanwhile, Director of Health and Family Welfare ServicesS Mohan Kumar said the medical personnel from private medicalcolleges were also associated with the present task of testingthe people for COVID 19.As many as 4,111 people were tested so far and theresults of 3,866 samples were found to be negative and that ofremaining samples were awaited. At 5.30pm on Thursday ‘Fani’ was located at a distance of 320 km South from Puri. It hit Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali around Puri. The cyclone is expected to move towards West Bengal with a speed of 115 Kmph. Moreover, the cyclone is expected to move towards north-east region and emerge into Bangladesh on Saturday Evening, said IMD. Storm surge of about 1.5 metres height above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low lying areas of Ganjam, Khurda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha at the time of landfall.

 The affect of landfall has already begun. North Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha are receiving light. The IMD said sea conditions are "very likely to be very rough" to high off north Tamilnadu, Puducherry, along and south Andhra Pradesh coasts till Friday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea areas. It warned that the cyclone is likely to cause damages to all types of houses, communication and power poles, road and rail infrastructure. The Odisha government said that around 900 cyclone shelters have been made ready to house the evacuees. "It is estimated that a total of 1150,000 people will have to be moved to safer areas, of which about 330,000 people have already been evacuated," a statement said.

 Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) have been put in place. Sinha directed establishment of a central toll free helpline for the general public and asked the Central ministries to set up control rooms to coordinate rescue and relief operations. The Civil Aviation Ministry informed that flight operations from Bhubaneswar were suspended from midnight of Thursday, while operations from Kolkata airport also will remain suspended from Friday morning until conditions improve. The railways have already suspended operations of trains in Odisha and all trains in Bhadrak-Vizianagaram section (of the Kolkata-Chennai route) has been cancelled till Saturday. A total of 140 trains including 83 passenger trains have been cancelled so far. The Indian Coast Guard and the Navy have deployed ships and helicopters for relief and rescue operations while the Army and Air Force units in the states have also been put on standby.
