"I have resigned as chief minister of Gujarat," Rupani told reporters after meeting Governor Acharya Devvrat and submitting his resignation letter. Gandhinagar, Feb 26 () Chief Minister Vijay Rupanihailed his government's budget for 2020-21, presented in theassembly on Wednesday, saying it takes care of every sectionof the society and will turn Gujarat into an "excellent"state.Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, who also holds thefinance portfolio, presented the Rs 2,17,287-crore budget forthe next fiscal.No new taxes were proposed in the budget which saw ahealthy allocation of Rs 31,955 crore for education, Rs 11,243crore for health and Rs 7,423 crore for the agriculturesector."This budget will turn Gujarat from being the bestinto an excellent state."All the sectors were kept in mind to keep Gujarat ontop and we have also made sure that last man in the last linegets all the facilities," the CM said in a statement after thebudget was presented on the first day of the Assembly session."It is aimed at increasing employment opportunitiesand farmers income. Rupani hails Gujarat budget, says it takes care of all sectors

Ahmedabad, Jul 3 () Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani will visit Surat on Saturday to take stock of the COVID-19 situation there since the diamond hub is emerging as the second outbreak hotspot in the state after Ahmedabad. Over 5,400 COVID-19 cases have been reported so far in Surat, 200 people have succumbed to the infection, and the daily caseload has been rising over the past two weeks. Rupani will be accompanied by deputy chief minister Nitin Patel, who is also state health minister, state chief secretary Anil Mukim and CM's chief principal secretary K Kailasnathan. "Rupani will review the condition of public health facilities of Surat when the cases of coronavirus have risen and will review preparedness of the district administration by conducting various meetings during the day," a CMO statement said. On June 19, Surat had just 93 cases per day, while Ahmedabad's tally of daily infections was 312. On June 25, however, Surat's tally had jumped to 152 while Ahmedabad's daily count had come down to 225. On June 27, Surat accounted for 174 and Ahmedabad 197 of the 600-plus cases reported in the state. On June 30, for the first time since the outbreak, the number of cases per day in Surat overtook that of Ahmedabad, while on Friday, both Ahmedabad and Surat reported 204 cases each. As per officials, opening of diamond units on June 1 may be a reason for the sharp rise in cases. A total of 570 staff and kin linked to these units have tested positive so far, said Surat Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani. Looking at the increasing infections in Gujarat, especially in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat government had on <keyword id="2375193" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Thursday-evening">Thursday evening</keyword> decided to impose night curfew in Ahmedabad from 9 pm to 6 am. However, after the review of the situation late in the night, the 60-hour curfew was announced. "The situation was reviewed late night (on Thursday) and it has been now decided that a complete curfew shall be imposed from 9 pm on Friday till 6 am on Monday in Ahmedabad. Only shops selling milk and medicines shall be permitted to open," said Additional Chief Secretary RK Gupta at a press conference on Friday. "The night curfew everyday from 9 pm to 6 am shall continue thereafter," added Gupta. With corona infections increasing during and after Diwali celebrations in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat government had decided on the night curfew. The late night decision created panic and rumours among public about another lockdown. <keyword id="43534" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-CM">Gujarat CM</keyword> Vijay Rupani said on Friday: "There is no question of a lockdown. The curfew is limited only for two days. The word is 'weekend', which means that the curfew will be on Saturday and Sunday." Meanwhile, the decision to impose night curfew in Ahmedabad had opposite effect to the one intended. Large crowds were witnessed in markets, defeating the very purpose of avoidance of overcrowding in the city. It made Ahmedabad authorities to order shutdown in many markets.

Gujarat imposes 60 hours curfew in Ahmedabad from 9 pm on Friday

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the Covid-19 situation of the eight worst-hit states in his first leg of PM-CM meeting on Tuesday. Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Gujarat are the 8 states that are plagued with risisng Covid cases as India intensifies its fight against the pandemic. In the first leg of the meeting, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal blamed the sudden spike on pollution. He said though the national capital saw a sudden spike of 8,600 cases on November 10, the positivity rate has been steadily decreasing since. He urged for an additional 1,000 ICU beds in central government hospitals till the third wave lasts. A presentation was made during the meeting which said the national capital has seen an average 111 deaths in the last one week. Maharashtra's average death was found to be 93 in the last one week. Rajasthan's positivity rate was found to be 21 per cent in last week which was very high. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Maharashtra's Udhhav Thackeray, Rajasthan's Ashok Gehlot, Gujarat's Vijay Rupani were also in attendance. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan were also present during the meeting as were V.K. Paul of the Niti Aayog, the Cabinet Secretary and the Union Health Secretary. During the meeting, Banerjee claimed that the state's performance on Covid was affected due to the international border it shares with other countries. She also raised the issue of the GST dues that the Centre owes it. Ahead of the meeting, Rajasthan government had hiked fine to Rs 500 for those who were not adhering to wearing of masks. It was mentioned during the PM-CM meeting as well, by the state. Shah cited examples of the US and Europe to urge states to exercise caution. He advised the eight states -- in the Covid Red Zone -- to stringently ensure that all wear masks while in public places and maintain physical distancing, besides high level of hygiene. Surat, Jul 4 () Concerned over the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in Surat, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel arrived in the city on Saturday to take stock of preparedness to tackle the pandemic. Surat has seen a worrisome rise in coronavirus cases over the last few days, with several persons testing positive at Katargam, Varachha and Sarthana localities, which are home to diamond polishing units and workers. Rupani and Patel, who is also the state health minister, will hold a meeting with the district collector, city civic chief and health officials to take stock of the outbreak and steps being taken to contain the spread. The chief minister is accompanied by chief secretary Anil Mukim and chief secretary to the chief minister K Kailasanathan. The diamond polishing units in the city have been hit by the outbreak, as they were ordered to remain shut for a week starting June 30 after 570 workers and their relatives tested positive for the infection in a month. On Friday, the Surat Municipal Corporation also ordered the closure of paan shops in affected localities in its effort to contain the viral spread. When they are positive and come late, itraises chances of mortality," Dr Guleria said."Several times, lives of patients with mild symptomsgetting low oxygen supply in blood can be saved if they getproper oxygen supply following timely treatment. Low oxygenaffects their heart and lungs, and this increases theirchances of death."If they have symptoms which can be that ofcoronavirus, they should get tested, isolated, to save theirlife with early diagnosis and treatment, and also save theirnear and dear ones from getting affected," he said.Dr Guleria also praised the facilities created by thegovernment for the treatment of coronavirus cases.It was important to fight the disease at the communitylevel rather than at the hospital level, he said."Healthcare workers, residents, nursing staff, haveto together fight the pandemic....Community participation isvital. New Delhi, Mar 29 () Realtors apex body CREDAI's Gujarat chapter has donated Rs 5 crore to Chief Minister Relief Fund to fight against coronavirus infections.CREDAI Gujarat tweeted that it has "donated Rs 5 crore towards Chief Minister Relief Fund to fight against Covid-19".The donation was given to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Saturday in the presence of CREDAI National Chairman Jaxay Shah.Sandip Sheth is the Chairman of CREDAI- Gujarat, while Ashish Patel is the President of the association.Some individual realtors have also come forward to support the central and state governments as well as migrant labourers and underprivileged.DLF Foundation has donated Rs 5 crore to Haryana CM Relief Fund and is also distributing masks, sanitisers, cooked food and dry rations to workers.Bengaluru-based Embassy Group has stepped forward to support the city traffic Police."Identifying the zones around Embassy Manyata Business Park, Embassy Tech Village, Embassy Icon and Embassy Paragon, Embassy Group has set up four hydration stations where the police personnel can take refreshing time breaks.The stations are equipped with drinking water, refreshments and toilet stops," Embassy said in a statement.In addition, Embassy Group has procured hand sanitizers, disposable masks and nutritional snacks. These items have been handed over to the Headquarters and will be distributed daily over the next 8 days to the 44 stations and their 3,800-person task force.Aditya Virwani, Chief Operating Officer, Embassy Group, said, "With our police and healthcare professionals at the forefront of controlling the spread, felt that it was our duty to support them in performing their duties. <img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/32348204.cms" />NEW DELHI: BJP appeared to be bracing for fresh turmoil in the run-up to <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> polls after L K Advani expressed disinclination to seek re-election from <keyword id="6356847" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="gandhinagar">Gandhinagar</keyword> in Narendra Modi-ruled Gujarat. 
 Although the central leadership turned down the request and sought to put a lid on the matter by announcing Advani’s candidature from Gandhinagar, the party leadership was keeping its fingers crossed. According to late-night reports, Advani has indicated that he would rather wait for the party central election committee to respond to his request to contest from <keyword id="6355556" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="bhopal">Bhopal</keyword>. 
 Advani’s desire, conveyed to <keyword id="114039" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="BJP-chief">BJP chief</keyword> <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> on Monday, to switch constituencies came as a surprise to the party because of his consistent public stand that he would fight only from Gandhinagar: the constituency which he has won since 1991. He had stated this as recently as on February 28 when the party announced its first list of candidates. 
 
The decision of the central election committee came after day-long drama that seemed to bring to the fore the bitter resistance of a section in BJP to Modi’s leadership. The saffron senior kept away from the deliberations on the ground that his candidature was under discussion even as reports swirled through the day about his reluctance to contest from Gandhinagar. 
 After the committee’s meeting, senior leaders <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword> and <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> met Advani to convey the party’s decision. General secretary Thawarchand Gehlot soon announced the decision to signal that the nomination for Gandhinagar, so far as the leadership is concerned, was a closed chapter.

 Yet, there was wariness about what Advani might do, with party circles speculating whether the <keyword id="6355554" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword> unit may recommend him for the Bhopal seat. 
 
Amid growing uncertainty, Modi had a meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat at the Sangh’s Jhandewalan office in the capital. Several assumptions were being put forward in party circles for Advani’s desire to move away from Gandhinagar after having often emphasized his closed links to Gujarat, saying his family had settled there after moving from Karachi and it was home. 
 Many in the party felt the attempted switch was meant to signal his autonomy of Modi and to emphasize that he could win from any constituency of his choice. With Madhya Pradesh already playing host to Sushma Swaraj, who represents Vidisha and whose equations with Modi are seen as tense, the desire to move to Bhopal was also suspected to be an attempt to raise a parallel axis vis-à-vis the ascendant troika of Modi, party chief Rajnath Singh and <keyword id="19496" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="leader">leader</keyword> of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley. 
 Party circles have for some time sniffed an effort to set up <keyword id="6355553" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="MP">MP</keyword> chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as a counterpoint to Modi. The tussle in the party over Modi’s projection as PM candidate saw Advani suggesting that Chouhan’s performance as CM surpassed Modi’s as Chouhan had turned around Madhya Pradesh which, unlike Gujarat, was a BIMARU state. 
 
Some in the party also saw the move to shift constituency as reflective of Advani camp’s fear that his campaign may be subverted by workers who may look to proactively scuttle any post-poll trouble for Modi. Although Modi camp would have ensured that Advani won comfortably to ward off the charge of sabotage, workers remain apprehensive of the intent of Modi’s opponents in the party. 
 Fearing that Advani’s shfit to Bhopal could be projected as another instance of senior leaders being humiliated under the Modi-Rajanth dispensation, the official faction had swung into action to dissuade Advani soon after he conveyed his keenness on Bhopal. The <keyword id="1589638" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gujarat-party">Gujarat party</keyword> recommended just Advani’s name for Gandhinagar on Monday. On Tuesday, former party MP from Gujarat Vijay Rupani publicized the state unit’s insistence that the party veteran stick with Gandhinagar. 
 
Sources close to the leadership saw the sudden change in Advani’s preference as underscoring the tenacity of the resistance that Modi faces from “determined hold-outs”. In recent weeks, Swaraj openly opposed the decision to re-admit Karnataka leader B Sriramulu. She not only tweeted her reservations but followed that up with another tweet after Sriramulu joined the party. 
 
But just as it has firmly overruled the protests of senior leaders like M M Joshi who had to make way for Modi in Varanasi, the ascendant BJP leadership does not seem ready to cater to Advani’s bid to shift to Bhopal. 
 
The meeting of the election committee saw several attendees emphasizing the point that the Gujarat unit had unanimously endorsed him as the candidate for Gandhinagar. 
 
Whether Advani, having “recused” himself from the meeting on the ground that it would be improper for him to participate in the deliberations when his name was under consideration, will insist on having his way despite the decision remains a tricky question. 
 
However, the way the battle of wits ends will be shaped by what stance Chouhan takes, particularly whether Sangh uses its leverage with him to nip any trouble from the Madhya Pradesh unit.
