"In a year when cryptocurrency prices rose dramatically, each region's respective reasons to embrace the asset class seem to have proven compelling," the study said.The <a href="https://blog.chainalysis.com/reports/2021-global-crypto-adoption-index">2021 Global Crypto Adoption Index</a> of Chainalysis analyzed 154 countries and ranked them based on three metrics: on-chain cryptocurrency value received, on-chain retail value transferred, and peer-to-peer exchange trade volume. Each country was weighted to avoid skewing the results towards larger countries.The top 20 countries were dominated by emerging markets in Asia and Africa such as Tanzania, Togo, Afghanistan, and the Philippines. This is why the study ranked countries by their peer-to-peer trade volume to favor countries with lower purchasing power parity per capita and fewer internet users.Often, countries with no centralized cryptocurrency exchanges use peer-to-peer platforms such as LocalBitcoins and Paxful, the study said, which is why many emerging markets made it to the list due to huge transaction volumes on those platforms."P2P platforms have a greater share of total transaction volume made up of smaller, retail-sized payments under $10,000 worth of cryptocurrency," the study said.The study eliminated one metric they used in 2020: the number of deposits by country weighted by the number of internet users. It debuted at $1,498 and fell by two thirds in just three days. It has since swung from highs above $1,600 to lows this week below $540, according to data from <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/chia-network/">CoinMarketCap.com</a>. But Hoffman thinks these are just teething problems before there is the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies and the <keyword id="6355684" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Blockchain">blockchain</keyword> technology that underpins them. And others agree - billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban has likened cryptocurrencies to the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/news/crypto-like-1990s-dotcom-boom-bitcoin-may-not-survive-btc-2021-4-1030359060">dotcom bubble of the late 1990s</a>. Cuban said in January he expects some coins will survive future crashes to become the crypto world's equivalent of Amazon or eBay. Chia was founded by BitTorrent inventor Bram Cohen in 2017, and promotes its "proof of space and time" process as a much more energy-efficient way of mining coins than bitcoin's "proof of work." The company raised $61 million in its latest funding round. Proof of work is an algorithm in blockchain technology that is used to confirm bitcoin transactions and rewards miners with new coins. It's also highly energy intensive and makes bitcoin one of the less climate-friendly coins out there. Rival coin <keyword id="6709758" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ether">ether</keyword>'s ethereum network is soon moving to a "proof of stake" process, which is slightly different and is far more energy-efficient, for example. Chia's XCH token earns its green credentials from the energy use of its mining process. Rather than "mining" for coins, the network's users "farm" them. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/news/green-cryptocurrency-chia-less-energy-intensive-bitcoin-crypto-ethereum-altcoins-2021-4-1030373374">Chia "farmers" generate and store</a> cryptographic numbers into "plots" onto their hard drives or solid state drives (SSDs) - a newer, faster <a href="https://www.avast.com/c-ssd-vs-hdd?v=rc">type of storage device</a>. A farmer's plot can win the chance to create a block and receive a reward on the blockchain based on the proportion of total space a farmer has filled up compared to the whole network. A server - called the "Timelord" - verifies the block and awards XCH tokens to the farmer in a process the company calls "proof of space and time". But <a href="https://foreignpolicy.com/2021/05/23/cryptocurrency-chia-waste-resources-bitcoin/">Chia has received criticism</a> for simply creating a new kind of waste, specifically burnt-up hard drives and SSDs. Demand for these storage devices has <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/bram-cohens-chia-drives-hard-disk-demand-in-europe-report">skyrocketed in Europe</a>, while some IT businesses in Vietnam said they <a href="https://www.retailnews.asia/china-cryptocurrency-craze-drives-hard-drive-shortage-in-vietnam/">ran out of stock</a> last month. "There's no free lunch," Hoffman said. "It's hard to say that being a thousand, 10,000 times more efficient for the same security isn't a massive innovation." Hoffman also said that burning through SSDs can be avoided: "If you use the $79 cheap-y SSD and try to plot a bunch against it you might burn that up, but the $99 will last you a lifetime," he said. "So the people who are complaining about that are buying the wrong tool for the job." Regulation is key to survival Aside from bitcoin's carbon footprint, the prospect of ever-tighter regulatory scrutiny has been one of the key drivers in the drop from the token's record high around $65,000 in April, to closer to $30,000 now. And this hasn't just affected bitcoin. Ether, Ripple's XRP, meme currency dogecoin, Polkadot's DOT, or Cardano's ADA are all down sharply from the highs of earlier this year as a result. Hoffman said Chia embraces government regulation - a major incentive behind the company's plans to go public "relatively quickly," possibly via a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-do-spacs-work-get-created-costs-guide">blank-check company,</a> or SPAC. "Everyone who's kind of merged their equity with their coin has generally been doing an illegal securities offering, and that can't scale, that cannot be adopted, that cannot become the thing that governments run central bank digital currencies on," Hoffman said. Part of cryptocurrencies' appeal is their decentralized nature - no one government or central bank controls them - and the degree of anonymity they afford their users. But Hoffman believes people want transparency. "You want to see the audited financials and the quarterly reports," he said. "These are not crazy ideas if you're trying to build trust." The Bloomberg report said most players are based in developing countries whose economies were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the Philippines, Brazil and Venezuela. In "the pursuit of a new income stream during the COVID pandemic," thousands of people from developing countries have been playing the game, according <a href="https://whitepaper.axieinfinity.com/">to a white paper</a> updated in December on Axie Infinity's website. A jump in the price of AXS has opened the door for people in struggling economies to earn some money. Demand from the Philippines climbed enough for crypto exchange Binance to <a href="https://www.binance.com/en/support/announcement/7c5f8346dcc240c99f79f55582f01e8f">offer an SLP-peso trade,</a> the report said, and there's also the lure of cryptocurrencies in places where local currencies are weak. Players need three Axies to get started but buy-in costs can be pricey, at around $200 for each creature. But sponsors can step in and allow people to play in exchange for a cut of their earnings. Such arrangements have also boosted revenue for Sky Mavis as it takes a cut every time an Axie changes hands and collects a fee when players breed new creatures, the report said. Bloomberg highlighted a player from Manila who in his first two weeks of playing Axie Infinity earned more than 37,000 pesos ($732), or three times what he would have earned at the IT job he was laid off from in July. The game has some detractors, however. Vanessa Cao, founder of venture-capital firm BTX Capital, told Bloomberg the Axie model is unhealthy and unsustainable, with people spending hundreds of dollars upfront to play.

He added: "Given the huge amount of stimulus we're seeing across countries because of covid-19 and low-interest rates, it's the right place at the right time for companies to offer the ability for people to buy, hold, and use digital currencies and have digital wallets." The first part of the study surveyed 3,053 people in February and March from developed economies - US, UK, France, South Korea, Australia, and Singapore - as well as developing countries including Brazil, Turkey, Vietnam, South Africa, and the Philippines. All respondents had bought a product or service within the past 12 months using some kind of digital payment. However, despite an openness to digital currencies, the study found that 51% cited the lack of knowledge as the main barrier towards greater adoption. A survey shows that the pandemic has made cryptocurrencies more attractive to investors, but the biggest barrier to entry is a lack of knowledge

The reading follows Tuesday's Consumer Price Index report, which showed prices paid by consumers rose less than expected last month. Together, the two reports should be encouraging to the Federal Reserve, as it has been aggressively hiking interest rates over the past 18 months in a bid to tame inflation without plunging the economy into a recession.Recent retail sales data also suggests it's accomplishing this goal. US stocks close higher as investors cheer fresh data showing inflation is easing

Markets were eyeing the release of the Fed's July meeting minutes, due out Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET. While fed fund futures show that July marked the last rate hike of the cycle, there's still doubt about how soon the Fed could pivot from its aggressive monetary policy given that inflation is still above the central bank's target of 2%. Prices increased 3.2% in July, less than expected but more than the 3% clocked in June. Key Treasury yields edged slightly lower. The two-year yield slipped after briefly topping 5%. The 10-year edged lower but is still well above 4%. China's economic troubles continue to deepen. Its property markets was shaken again this week as real estate developer Country Garden indicated "major uncertainties" that it would be able to make bond payments. Meanwhile, government data reported Tuesday indicated a broad slowdown in economic activity, and the National Bureau of Statistics said it would stop reporting youth unemployment levels, which have been a key data point illustrating the country's slump. 10 things before the opening bell

<keyword id="399907" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="meta" source="Orion">Meta</keyword>, the parent company of Facebook, has announced that it was laying off about 11,000 employees, or 13 per cent of its global workforce. It's the first mass redundancy exercise for the 18-year-old social media behemoth. Its Asia-Pacific headquarters in <keyword id="6356662" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="singapore" source="Orion">Singapore</keyword> was not spared. Media reports speculated that out of the estimated 1,000 employees here, perhaps up to 100, have been affected, majority of whom are tech workers including software engineers. Based on 2021 Singapore Ministry of Manpower figures, about a quarter of the 177,100 employment pass holders or around 45,000, are from India. Employment pass holders are the highest qualified foreign professionals that are allowed to work in the country and must earn at least SGD 5,000 (USD 3,700) per month. No doubt many of these are impacted by not only Meta's layoffs but also other redundancies happening in the tech sector. Technology companies around the world and in Singapore, a major tech hub where many of the tech giants host their regional headquarters, are freezing hiring or downsizing in the face of sluggish consumer spending, higher interest rates and inflation. Singapore-based gaming and ecommerce powerhouse Sea Limited, the parent company of Garena, (publisher of games like League of Legends and Free Fire), and Shopee, made two rounds of cuts in June and September and rescinded job offers. Sea had 67,300 employees as at the end of 2021, double its headcount the year before, according to the company's most recent annual report. Following a net loss of USD931 million in the second quarter of this year, and amidst mounting cost of borrowing and a slowing global economy, the company scaled back its overseas footprint and periphery businesses with the aim to boost profitability by consolidating its position in its key markets and core products. The company did not reveal the number of job cuts but the job losses in Singapore and in its offices around the world is estimated to be in the hundreds. "Last year, a lot of what happened was a lot of cheap capital in the market flooded the market (which) allowed companies to grow really at any cost," said <keyword id="15509891" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jessica-huang-pouleur" source="Orion">Jessica Huang Pouleur</keyword>, a partner at venture capital firm Openspace, to CNBC in June. "What happened was people hired very rapidly. You have a problem; you just throw people at it. I think we'll likely see more of it to come over the course of the next few months." Among the Southeast Asian companies that downsized in the middle of the year are Singapore-based digital wealth manager, StashAway which laid off 31 employees, or 14 per cent of its headcount, and currency exchange Crypto.com which let go 260, or 5 per cent of its workforce in Singapore. Meanwhile, Malaysian online shopping platform iPrice also retrenched 250 workers or 25 per cent of its employees, and Indonesian education tech company Zenius made more than 200 employees redundant. In November, digital payments startup <keyword id="944108" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="stripe" source="Orion">Stripe</keyword> and social media network Twitter were among the companies that reduce jobs in their Singapore offices. On November 3, Stripe announced said it would cut its global workforce by 1,000 or 14 per cent. After the job cuts, Stripe will have about 7,000 employees. Some Singapore-based jobs were impacted. A day later, Twitter chopped off half its global headcount or about 3,700 employees a week after Elon Musk's takeover. Those in the Singapore office were also affected. Singapore's Straits Times reported that the among those impacted were staff from its engineering, sales and marketing teams. Startups in the region were particularly badly affected due to a fall in venture capital funding levels this year. According to a Crunchbase report, funding in the region dropped by 7 per cent in the first quarter of 2022 to USD36.3 billion compared to the same quarter last year. Many tech companies expanded rapidly during the COVID pandemic as much of the world stayed at home and formed habits which created a spike in demand for online services. As consumer behaviour began to normalise after the lockdowns, some of these habits have shifted. This coupled with inflation and rising interest rates has put a squeeze on all tech companies. Some call the recent fall in share prices of big tech companies an overdue correction. While revenue and jobs in the tech will be impacted in the short-term, and market volatility is likely in the near future, the tech industry is expected to continue to grow in the long-term. A recent article published by consulting and recruitment specialist Mercer says that the demand for tech jobs and talent continues to outstrip supply in Asia. The evidence Mercer claims is in the starting salaries for graduates with a computing degree. Comparing Mercer's data from 2018 and factoring the time it generally takes for one cohort in most locations to complete an average degree course; there has been significant growth, primarily driven by massive hiring in emerging tech markets such as Vietnam (59 per cent increase) as well as lower-tier cities in China (22 per cent increase). Furthermore, economies across Asia are becoming more digital. According to research from Google, Temasek Holdings and Bain &amp; Co., the internet economy in Southeast Asia is projected to double to USD363 billion by 2025, surpassing the previous forecast of USD300 billion. The tech industry always goes through "periods of major adjustments and corrections", such as the "dotcom bubble" in the mid-1990s to early 2000s, said Dr Natalie Pang to Channel NewsAsia.
