Starring <keyword id="189215" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vikrant-massey" source="Orion">Vikrant Massey</keyword> and <keyword id="3273821" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medha-Shankar" source="Orion">Medha Shankar</keyword>, the film released in theatres on October 27 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. "12th Fail" is based on Anurag Pathak's bestselling novel about the journey of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and IRS officer Shraddha Joshi. "In a remarkable feat, the Vidhu Vinod Chopra directorial '12th Fail' has crossed the 50 crores nett mark in its sixth week, totalling Rs 50.68 crore nett signalling a resounding success for content-driven cinema. The ace director, known for films such as "Khamosh", "Parinda", "1942: A Love Story" and "<keyword id="3897" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mission-Kashmir" source="Orion">Mission Kashmir</keyword>", said money has never dictated his creative decisions. "My job as an artist or a filmmaker is to make the world slightly better than what it was when I came. So, if I can make a film that can make a slight difference to people's lives, it inspires me. "Money has never driven me. I could have made 'Munnabhai' 3, 4, 5, 6... and be a multi-millionaire, which I'm not. I chose to make '12th Fail', with <keyword id="189215" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vikrant-massey" source="Orion">Vikrant Massey</keyword>," Chopra told PTI in an interview here. Not only his directorial efforts, the 71-year-old said he makes sure even his production ventures, which include acclaimed titles such as "Munna Bhai" franchise, "3 Idiots" and "Parineeta", have something important to convey. "In 'Parinda', I talked about violence. '1942' was about patriotism and 'Mission Kashmir' was about religious divide.... In all my films, it is important that they say something," he added. "12th Fail" is based on Anurag Pathak's best-selling novel about the incredible journey of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and IRS officer Shraddha Joshi. The movie stars Massey in the lead along with Medha Shankar. Though inspired by Sharma's life, Chopra said "12th Fail" is a story of "each one of us" coming to big cities with aspirations and dreams. "I started writing this film when I was 66 and now I'm 71. You can't write a film like this in months. It takes years because every character has a story. It's not a biopic. It's each one of us... There is a lot of me and you in the film." Integral to the movie's storyline is the idea of "restart". As inspirational and motivational it may sound, the concept stemmed from a personal tragedy, said Chopra. "My brother was the closest person to me in the world, apart from my wife and kids. During the pandemic, when I was developing this film, he was in Maldives. He delayed coming to Mumbai and couldn't survive. It hit me very hard. "Within a week or so, I realised it is not fair to the people who are around me. I was already in the story and the whole concept of restart took place in my head. It didn't come from a happy place. It came from a tragedy that struck me," the director recalled. Chopra said somewhere while healing through the personal loss, he realised that life was much like a video game -- "you lose, you press a button and move on". "I told myself why can't we do that in life. We have setbacks, we fall, and then we lose everything. Life is a game too. The thought is inspirational but not easy. It is about the way you look at life," he added. Chopra said through "12th Fail", which released on Friday, he wants to address that nothing is impossible to achieve, but if one faces a setback, the goal should always be to "restart". "When I read about the suicides in Kota and anywhere else. I want to tell those kids.... It's tough, I understand. I lost the man I loved the most in my life. (But) you got to restart. And UPSC is not just one thing, you can explore so much in life." Apart from Massey, who has established himself as a dependable performer with projects such as "A Death in the Gunj", "Haseen Dillruba" and "Criminal Justice", the film features an impressive supporting cast in Anant V Joshi, Anshumaan Pushkar, Sanjay Bishnoi and Priyanshu Chatterjee. Chopra said ever since he decided to make a film on the subject, he was sure about casting "real people". "I didn't want filmy heroes pretending to be these people. Most of the cast are new actors, first time actors or not very famous. But they are real people. I rehearsed with them for one year," the director said, adding that he is currently writing a film for which he would be needing movie stars. "I will cast a movie star, if it is a movie star role. Like I'm writing a film for which I need big movie stars. I made 'Eklavya' and I wouldn't have made that movie without Mr Bachchan. Every film has its own demand, so to say. '12th Fail' demanded me to be very real." Chopra made sure that his comments are a part of the teaser that was released recently. This is not the first time that Hollywood greats have backed Chopra’s films. Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuaron had earlier endorsed Chopra’s Hollywood film, Broken Horses. Shikara tells the story of the Kashmir valley insurgency in 1990 which forced over 400,000 Kashmiri pandits to flee. It marks the debut of two newcomers Sadia and Aadil Khan in the lead roles. Chopra is also known to have filmed a few of the scenes in a refugee camp. Game of sentiments Chopra’s choice of the movie is no coincidence. The producer who made movies like Three Idiots and 1947-a love story, is a Kashmiri Pandit himself. “It is a movement,” he said, claiming that the movie is very “personal” to him. “My mother thought she would go back after two-three weeks or after a few months or next year, but she could not go back, and that smile slowly vanished," Chopra told PTI, reminiscing his personal experiences attached to the tragedy. He also claimed that the movie is a tribute to Kashmiri Pandits. “Nobody listened to us for 30 years. Our story was hidden for the past 30 years,” said Chopra at an event. A plea filed in J&amp;K HC The movie however is courting controversy as expected. A petition has been filed in the J&amp;K High Court against the movie, demanding a stay on the film’s release. The movie is expected to be released on 7 February 2019. The petitioners alleged that Chopra’s film portrayed untrue facts about Kashmir and Kashmiri Pandits in the movie. <a href="https://www.thekashmirmonitor.net/plea-against-shikara-filed-in-hc/">According to the activist </a>Iftikhar Misgar, Majid Hyderi and Irfan Hafiz Lone, who filed the PIL, the movie does not segregate between the militants and the common Kashmiris, as local Kashmiris tried to convince the Pandits of Kashmir to stay on. The movie portrays that all Kashmiri Muslims are responsible for the extradition of the pandits from Kashmir, the activist says. Chopra was born and raised in Srinagar. He had directed similar movies on the topic like Mission Kashmir in 2000 starring Sanjay Dutt, Preity Zinta and Hritik Roshan. The movie revolved around the Kashmiri insurgency in the early ’90s. This year might see many movies on the topic after the government altered the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-will-change-in-jammu-kashmir-after-the-end-of-article-370/articleshow/70536883.cms">special status</a> given to Jammu and Kashmir last year. The festival concluded on Sunday with an awards ceremony that was hosted by Karan Johar, Ayushmann Khurrana and Maneish Paul. "Three of Us" director Avinash Arun Dhaware won the trophy for the film's cinematography. Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt bag best actor trophies at Filmfare; 12th Fail is the best film

Mumbai, Renowned film art director <keyword id="194218" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nitin-desai" source="Orion">Nitin Desai</keyword>, who created sets for blockbuster films such as "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and "Lagaan", was found hanging on Wednesday at his studio in Maharashtra's Raigad district neighbouring Mumbai, a senior police official said. Prima facie, it seems to be a case of suicide, the official said, adding they are investigating the case from all angles. "Desai's body was found hanging with a rope in the morning at the N D Studios," Raigad Superintendent of Police Somnath Gharge said. The studio is located in the Karjat area of Raigad, about 50 km from Mumbai. After being alerted, police rushed to the spot, the official said. The police are investigating the case from all possible angles, Gharge said. Desai, who was in his late 50s, served as art director and production designer for a number of Bollywood and Marathi movies. He was also known for his art work in films such as "Jodhaa Akbar" and "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo". The art director's death sent shock waves across the industry with film personalities such as Hema Malini, Riteish Deshmukh, Siddhartha Basu, and Neil Nitin Mukesh mourning Desai's passing. Actor-politician Hema Malini said Desai's death was a "terrible loss" to the film industry. "Such a warm human being, associated with many of my projects and ballets... May he find peace wherever he is," she tweeted. Neil said it is difficult to accept the heartbreaking news of Desai's death. The late art director worked on "Jail", the 2009 film starring the actor. "Our beloved #nitindesai has left for his heavenly abode. He was simply a genius. A visionary artist with grace, style who understood not just his craft but people. He was a positive soul who spread only love to all. My God give his family strength. Om Shanti," he wrote on the microblogging site. Basu, who worked with Desai on popular reality shows such as "Kaun Banega Crorepati" and "Dus Ka Dum", said he was shocked to hear about the passing of his "friend and artistic collaborator". "He made sets for so many of our shows - KBC, Kamzor Kadi, Heartbeat, Bluffmaster, Dus ka Dum, Sach ka Saamna.. Conjuring world class installations on an industrial scale. Om shanti," Basu wrote on Twitter, which was recently rebranded as X. In his career spanning over 30 years, Desai closely worked with directors like Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rajkumar Hirani, and Ashutosh Gowariker.

'Lagaan' art director Nitin Desai found hanging at his studio near Mumbai

PK, which released last Friday at the Chinese theatres, was liked by the audience in China. 
 
 Amrita Pandey of UTV Motion Pictures, which co-produced the film along with Aamir Khan, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and <keyword id="6354633" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajkumar-Hirani">Rajkumar Hirani</keyword>, told news agency IANS, "We are thrilled with the audience response in China. Aamir Khan, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra travelled across China with our marketing team promoting the film and culminated this with a grand premiere in Shanghai for the film." 
 
Aamir Khan's PK, which became the best performing Indian film abroad of all time has now crossed the Rs 200 crore milestone overseas. 
 
"It was such a warm reception for them in China and now the movie has become a talking point and opened to such phenomenal collections! This is a really proud moment for us, and we are happy to have made this impact in a new market," she added. 
 
When it was released in India and other countries in December last year, PK shattered records not just at home but also in Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan where it is the highest earning Indian film now. It is the highest grossing foreign language movie in <keyword id="6378080" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="North-America">North America</keyword> of 2014, claims IANS report. 
 
The Chinese dubbed PK has opened in 4,600 screens across the country. This is the first time an Indian film has received such widest releases overseas. 
 
Aamir Khan, director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra had recently visited China to promote the film, which premiered in Shanghai on May 13.

Aamir Khan’s PK a big hit in China. Rakes in $7.03mn post its release in the country

Mumbai Film Festival is an annual international film festival organised by MAMI (Mumbai Academy of Moving Image), a not-for-profit trust founded in 1997. The <keyword id="2558540" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="16th-Mumbai-Film-Festival">16th Mumbai Film Festival</keyword> was inaugurated yesterday, but the esteemed film festival didn’t see many stars at its opening ceremony. While it can’t be said that there was no major celebrity present at the opening, seeing the presence of <keyword id="6357861" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ranbir-kapoor">Ranbir Kapoor</keyword> and Akhsay Kumar, the opening was still not as star-studded as one would have expected it to be. This is all the way more ironical as a bunch of <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> celebrities was seen in the promotional video for the festival, only a few of whom actually came down to attend the opening. Hosted by actress and playwright Kalki Koechlin, the event saw the presence of celebrities like <keyword id="6366471" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aishwarya-Rai">Aishwarya Rai</keyword> Bachchan, Kiran Rao, Ayan Mukherji, Shyam Benegal, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, <keyword id="2064" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Helen">Helen</keyword>, Subhash Ghai, Satish Kaushik, Ramesh and Kiran Sippy, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Huma Qureshi, Rahul Bose, Anurag Kashyap and Deepika Padukone. After the event was declared open by Mrs Bachchan, she gave the Lifetime Achievement Award to French actress <keyword id="151333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Catherine-Deneuve">Catherine Deneuve</keyword>, followed by one to Helen, which was presented by <keyword id="2823" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akshay-Kumar">Akshay Kumar</keyword>, who graciously held Helen's black and golden clutch as she gave her ‘Thank You’ speech. 
	 

	The week-long festival would see more than 175 movies, from 65 countries,. There also would be chat shows with celebrities from Bollywood and world cinema, like Deepika Padukone, Catherine Deneuve, Anurag Kashyap, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Arjun Kapoor, and Arturo Guilem.

This new audio card is available in India through Twitter's partnership with SoundCloud, a leading third-party streaming service. 
 
The audio card allows you to listen to the audio with a single tap and the service is available for both iOS and Android users. It can also run in the background while users continue browsing the social networking website. 
 Audio card is a new feature being tested by <keyword id="749437" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Twitter-India">Twitter India</keyword>, and by using this service to launch the audio trailer of PK, UTV has surely made a step which would surely give it a first mover advantage. There are millions of Indian users on twitter and using an audio service is likely to benefit movie makers, production houses and musical artists in the future.

Generally, there is a lot of hype around a movie that stars Aamir Khan and PK is no different. This movie has been directed by Rajkumar Hirani, and jointly produced by Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It is the same trio that had delivered a hit like 3 Idiots, and the trade pundits are expecting PK recreate that magic.

The movie also stars Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Dutt. Interestingly, PK will be released in 5,200 screens in India and 600 screens in the overseas. 
 
As there is no holiday on this Friday, we are expecting the movie to remain in the 25-to-35-crore range, and pick steam over the weekend. We will not be surprised if the movie manages to get into the Rs 100 crore club in the first weekend from domestic sales alone. However, collecting a colossal Rs 50 crore during that period looks like a tall feet. 
 
Last year, Aamir Khan's action thriller Dhoom 3, which was released around the same time, managed to collect good money both at home and abroad. Will Aamir Khan’s PK Create New Box Office Records?

Indian actor Aamir Khan, who has been in news for his rant against controversial show AIB Roast and for his role of a wrestler in the upcoming movie Dangal, recently apologised to the people who were hurt by his last release PK. 
 
PK, 2014’s biggest hit, managed to hit both right and wrong chords because of its controversial topic, involving major Indian religions and faiths in Godmen. Aamir Khan, who played an alien in the movie, apologised to those offended by the movie at the launch of the movie’s DVD. 
 
"The film has been loved by the majority. Personally I want to say I feel bad if I hurt a single person; that was not my intention at all. What we wanted to tell we told that because it was an important point. But I want to apologise if I hurt people," Aamir was quoted saying. 
 
"Yes, we never expected this business. When we make a film with such effort and hard work and when people connect to the film emotionally you feel so good and fulfilled," he said. 
 
"Roughly the net collection in India is around Rs 340 crore and overseas is Rs 170 crore. So the net business is over Rs 500 crore and the gross may be Rs 600-650 crore," Aamir informed. 
 
Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani, who donned the hats of producer and director of the movie, respectively, were also present with Aamir Khan at the event. 
 
"We are actually pushing our limits, with every film we do we try to make new grounds. We almost spent almost five years to make this film and another six-seven months in the editing room perfecting every scene. This DVD is very precious," said Chopra. 
 
"This is the first time that I had deleted scenes in a film. Now when we watch them (deleted scenes) we realized those scenes were funny but because of the length we could not include it," Hirani was quoted saying. 
 PK, starring Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Saurabh Shukla and Boman Irani, released on December 19 last year and became the highest grosser in <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> despite several people demanding a ban on the movie, claiming that it hurt their religious sentiments.
