<ul class="summary-list"><li>Settlers attempted a genocide against Native Americans during the <keyword id="2379" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="California">California</keyword> <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gold">Gold</keyword> Rush.</li><li>Violent attacks against Native Americans were often supported and funded by new state governments.</li><li>Legislation also used to strip Native Americans of legal rights and protections.</li></ul><p>For many, growing up on the US west coast can mean learning about Sutter's mill, the infamous 49ers and their hunt for gold. But that's only one part of the sta gold rush story. </p><p>Historians tell Insider the era touted for discovery and expansion is actually responsible for one of the bloodies periods in <keyword id="462610" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="US-history">US history</keyword> - a story that remained covered up for years.</p><p>Government propaganda spread lies about Native Americans, said Jayden Lim, a Trial youth ambassador. </p><p>"The post-gold rush era was the most dangerous time in our history to be a California Indian. Most people did not survive it," Lim said. </p><p>Greed for gold in California was pushed through violent articles, advertisements, and cartoons. Some depicted 49ers carrying pistols and rifles, even carrying knives while wielding mining tools. </p><p>About 300,000 heavily-armed settlers descended to California to hunt for gold. This set the stage for the "violence of genocide," said Benjamin Madley, an Associated Professor of Native American history at UCLA and author of "An American Genocide."</p><p>Large ranches recruited hundreds of Native men and sent them up to work in the mines. At that time it was common practice for Native people to be treated as disposable workers. Beyond this mistreatment, some white miners wanted to eliminate competition from Native Americans mining freely. </p><p>This elimination became an excuse for brutal slaughter. But, this Gold Rush genocide is rarely cited in history books. </p><p>"We've had a kind of institutionalized amnesia about the genocide of California Indians here in the state," Madley said. </p><p>Hundreds of Native American people were killed in what is known as the Bloody Island Massacre. Madley's research estimates roughly 9,000 to 16,000 people suffered violent deaths at the hands of militiamen, vigilantes, US army soldiers and more during the gold rush years. </p><p>"The men who committed these acts were not censured. They weren't court-martialed, they weren't kicked out of the army. In fact, all of the men who participated were eventually promoted. Several of them became generals, and one, later in life, became governor of the state of California."</p><p>In fact, Governor Peter Burnett, the first governor of California, declared a "war of extermination" on California Indians during his first speech to the citizens of California. </p><p>The state's newly established government then passed an act that authorized the organization of ranger militias. </p><p>These volunteer groups were sent on 24 killing campaigns in just 11 years, from 1850 to 1861. </p><p>No one was held accountable, Madley said. </p><p>"I think it's not an exaggeration to say that California legislators established and then funded a state sponsored killing machine with the aim of capturing or killing all California Indian people," Madley said. </p><p>How was this history whitewashed? <ul class="summary-list"><li>The first House Jan. 6 committee hearing was a disaster for Republicans.</li><li>Four police officers who fought off the pro-Trump mob ripped into the GOP for downplaying the riot.</li><li>"The indifference shown to my colleagues is disgraceful," one officer said, slamming his hand on the table.</li></ul><p>The first hearing held by the House select committee investigating the <keyword id="1464947" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="January-6">January 6</keyword> insurrection exemplified why Republicans have pushed so hard against a probe into the <keyword id="10556501" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="capitol-attack">Capitol attack</keyword>. </p><p>The hearing was a disaster for Republicans. It was an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gop-rep-adam-kinzinger-chokes-up-praising-officers-january-6-2021-7">emotionally raw</a> indictment of former President Donald Trump and his GOP defenders. </p><p>The four police officers who were called to testify on their experiences defending the Capitol repeatedly slammed GOP efforts to whitewash the insurrection. They called out Republicans who portray themselves as pro-law enforcement but won't fully acknowledge the violence officers were subjected to on January 6. And they explicitly blamed the insurrection on Trump at a time when the GOP continues to defer to the twice-impeached president like the party's Supreme Leader. </p><p>"The indifference shown to my colleagues is disgraceful," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dc-cop-michael-fanone-slams-trump-allies-for-their-disgraceful-indifference-2021-7">DC Police Officer Michael Fanone said</a>, slamming his fist on the table as he excoriated Republicans who've downplayed the insurrection. "Nothing, truly nothing, has prepared me to address those elected members of our government who continue to deny the events of that day. And in doing so, betray their oath of office."</p><h2>'Terrorists'</h2><p>Video footage shown by lawmakers during the hearing showed in gruesome detail the brutal violence officers faced at the hands of the pro-Trump mob on January 6. The officers were mercilessly beaten, their weapons were taken from them, and the rioters pelted them with racial slurs - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/capitol-police-officer-harry-dunn-called-n-word-jan-6-2021-7">including the n-word</a> - as they feared for their lives. </p><p>One such clip showed DC Police Officer Daniel Hodges screaming as he was crushed by a door. </p><p>When asked about Republicans attempting to downplay the riot by describing the insurrections as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gop-rep-who-called-capitol-rioters-tourists-photographed-barricading-house-2021-5">"tourists,"</a> Hodges said, "Well, if that's what American tourists are like, I can see why foreign countries don't like American tourists."</p><p>Hodges, who repeatedly referred to the insurrectionists as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/officer-daniel-hodges-calls-pro-trump-january-6-rioters-terrorists-2021-7">"terrorists,"</a> later on said to the panel, "I need you guys to address if anyone in power had a role in this, if anyone in power coordinated or aided and abetted or tried to downplay, tried to prevent the investigation of this terrorist attack. Because we can't do it."</p><p>US Capitol Police Officer Harry A. Dunn, who recounted the racist abuse he faced from the pro-Trump mob, toward the end of the hearing remarked at the fact that the only two Republicans on the committee were being lauded as courageous for telling the truth about the insurrection as the rest of their party vies to rewrite history. </p><p>"Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger are being lauded as courageous heroes. And while I agree with that notion, why? Because they told the truth? Why is telling the truth hard? I guess in this America, it is," Dunn said. </p><p>Dunn likened the January 6 insurrection to a murder committed by a hired hitman. </p><p>"If a hitman is hired, and he kills somebody, the hitman goes to the jail. But not only does the hitman go to jail, but the person who hired him does," Dunn said. "There was an attack carried out on January 6th and a hitman sent them."</p><p>Earlier in his testimony, Dunn said that when he confronted the rioters and told them to leave the Capitol they yelled in response, "'President Trump invited us here. We're here to stop the steal.'" Shortly thereafter, Dunn said he faced a "torrent of racial epithets."</p><h2>'It was an attempted coup'</h2><p>US Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell, who was <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/03/politics/capitol-police-officers-exclusive-interview-january-6/index.html">beaten with a flagpole</a> during the insurrection, did not hold back when asked to react to the fact that Trump described the violent mob he unleashed on the Capitol as a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-said-he-and-capitol-rioters-wanted-same-thing-book-2021-7">"loving crowd."</a></p><p>"It's upsetting," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/capitol-officer-gonell-responds-trump-claim-loving-crowd-insurrection-video-2021-7">Gonell said of Trump's words</a>. "It's a pathetic excuse for his behavior, for something that he himself helped to create, this monstrosity."</p><p>"To me, it's insulting, it's demoralizing because everything that we did was to prevent everyone in the Capitol from getting hurt. And what he was doing instead of sending the military, instead of sending the support, or telling his people, his supporters to stop this nonsense, he egged them to continue fighting," Gonell, who like many others <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photo-capitol-riot-house-hearing-police-officer-tears-2021-7">became emotional during the hearing</a>, said of Trump. </p><p>Trump gave <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-peppered-supporters-with-lies-in-speech-on-overturning-election-2021-1">a lie-filled speech</a> near the White House before the riot began, repeating false claims about the election results and urging his supporters to march on the Capitol. As the violence unfolded, Trump for hours <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-provoked-attempted-coup-capitol-sat-back-and-tweeted-2021-1">did nothing to quell the unrest</a>. He eventually told his supporters to go home, but did so while calling the insurrectionists <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-video-statement-capitol-rioters-we-love-you-very-special-2021-1">"very special"</a> as he continued to falsely assert that the election was stolen. </p><p>"It was an attempted coup happening at the Capitol that day. If it was another country, the US would've sent help," Gonell said.</p><h2>Republicans are trying to rewrite history</h2><div type="image" title="Capitol Hill dystopian" height="3573" width="5280" msid="84805498" hostid="261"></div><p>Outside of the hearing, Republicans continued to push lies about the insurrection - with GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York falsely stating that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gop-rep-elise-stefanik-lies-blames-pelosi-for-january-6-2021-7">"bears responsibility."</a></p><p>GOP leaders have dismissed the inquiry as a partisan sham given most of the panel's members are Democrats, though it was Senate Republicans who blocked the formation of an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the insurrection. </p><p>Last week, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy put forward the names of five House Republicans to sit on the committee. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pelosi-rejects-2-of-mccarthy-picks-for-january-6-committee-2021-7">rejected two</a> - Trump loyalists Reps. Jim Banks of Indiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio - and called for McCarthy to offer alternatives. Both Banks and Jordan objected to the certification of President Joe Biden's Electoral College victory on January 6, effectively amplifying Trump's lies about the election result that sparked the insurrection in the first place.  </p><p>McCarthy announced that none of his picks would participate, stating that the GOP would move forward with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mccarthy-says-gop-will-run-its-own-investigation-january-6-2021-7">its own inquiry.</a></p><p>But the vast majority of Republicans have repeatedly made it clear they're not interested in getting to the bottom of what happened on January 6. Merely participating in such an effort could put them at odds with Trump and some of the most powerful forces in their party.</p>

The first January 6 committee hearing was a searing indictment of the GOP's lies about the fatal Capitol attack

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="12048092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="big-brother" source="Orion">Big Brother</keyword>" premiered on <keyword id="11930679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cbs" source="Orion">CBS</keyword> more than two decades ago in the summer of 2000.</li><li>In the past 22 seasons of the show, a Black contestant has never won the game. </li><li>But an all-Black alliance called "The Cookout" has dominated season 23, ensuring a win for a Black player.</li></ul><p>It's been nearly a decade since Jodi Rollins set foot in the "Big Brother" house. </p><p>In July 2012, Rollins, then 42 years old, entered expecting a summer-long adventure full of twists during the 14th season of the show. Instead, Rollins <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H87eo2qQv84">was sent out the door hours after she first walked through</a> it. It was the first time in the history of CBS' blockbuster summer show where a contestant was eliminated on the first episode.</p><p>Rollins, now 51 and a <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/big-time-small-talk/id1532412892">podcast host</a>, was the only Black contestant (referred to as a houseguest on "Big Brother") out of 16 people cast to appear on "BB14." In a rare occurrence, Rollins was eliminated after her team placed last in the first competition.</p><div type="image" title="Jodi Rollins after being the 1st Houseguest evicted from BIG BROTHER" height="2000" width="1316" msid="86614354" hostid="261"></div> Since then, she has become somewhat of an icon in the "Big Brother" fandom, with fans regularly prodding "Big Brother" producers to bring her back for a second chance. Rollins told Insider that despite her image and name being referenced on recent seasons of the show, she'd never been brought back.<p>Since Big Brother premiered on CBS in the summer of 2000, not a single Black contestant has won the game. Structural changes behind the show amid a cross-industry racial reckoning have enabled a group of Black contestants to claim the final 6 spots in the 21-year run of "Big Brother." </p><h2>Nearly all of the winners of the show have been white.</h2><p>In 2003, Jun Song, who was born in South Korea, made "Big Brother" history, becoming the first person of color (POC) to win the show in its fourth season.</p><p>Song, now 46, would remain the only non-white winner for another 15 seasons until Josh Martinez, who is Latinx and Cuban, won in season 19. Kaycee Clark, who is of Filipino descent, won the 20th season of the show, bringing the total number of POC winners to three out of 22.</p><p>But on Wednesday, a six-person alliance known as "The Cookout" is poised to make history. The all-Black group, comprised of Azah Awasum, a 30-year-old from Baltimore; Hannah Chaddha, a 21-year old from Chicago; Derek Frazier, a 29-year-old from Philiadelphia; Tiffany Mitchell, a 40-year-old from Detroit; Xavier Prather, a 27-year old from Milwaukee; and Kyland Young, a 29-year old from Venice Beach, formed the first week of the season.</p><p>"The Cookout" was created with the goal of making "Big Brother" history: ensuring a Black player won. This season of "Big Brother" also marks another first for the show: not a single white male made it to the jury of nine eliminated players who will decide the winner between the final two on finale night.</p><p>Over the course of the season, the alliance dominated the game, winning numerous competitions while going mostly undetected by their fellow houseguests. All six members of the alliance ended up in the final six, and three of its members - Zwasum, Frazier, and Prather - will make it to the finale that will air live Wednesday, where the first Black "Big Brother" winner will be crowned.</p><p>It's a big deal, Rollins said. </p><p>"Just from a game perspective, the fact that six people could say 'let's do something and stick together,' no matter what in that game is remarkable," she told Insider. "But then to know it was a cause that was larger than themselves, which is why I think it actually worked."</p><h2>"Big Brother" has a history of racism allegations</h2><p>Allegations of racism on the show reached a tipping point during the 15th season, which aired in 2013. Several white contestants were accused of using racist slurs and hurling racist comments toward its only female Black and Asian American houseguests, as <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/17/arts/television/big-brother-becomes-a-lab-experiment-in-overt-racism.html?.?mc=aud_dev&amp;ad-keywords=auddevgate&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwkbuKBhDRARIsAALysV56PZdj6AlQaJUDPjxlQGD71Ll_S4n1CNTCMWEf8s1PfoIkN3EQ3GMaAtpZEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.dsgclsrc=aw.ds">The New York Times</a> reported at the time.</p><div type="image" title="Big Brother" height="537" width="716" msid="86614357" hostid="261"></div><p>The slurs weren't aired on television, though avid fans of the show caught them on the live feeds, which allow paying subscribers near 24/7 access into the house. Some of the remarks were eventually aired on the CBS broadcast show after fans pressured the network to address the comments, according to a report from <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/big-brother-15-houseguests-racist-581533/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>.</p><p>When one houseguest who had been accused of racism was evicted, Chen Moonves confronted her about her remarks, saying she had been personally offended by them. Chen Moonves' husband, Leslie Moonves, the then-chairman and CEO of CBS, called the comments "absolutely appalling," the LA Times reported.</p><p>"What happened this season is unfortunate, but at its heart, this show is a daring social experiment," its longtime executive producer Allison Grodner said in 2013, defending the show. "It's real and raw, and it's not always pretty."</p><p>The show faced allegations of racism again in 2019 during its 21st season. As the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2019-09-24/cbs-big-brother-racism-controversy-context">Los Angeles Times</a> reported, Kemi Fakunle, the only female Black houseguest that year, said at the time she believed she was targeted because of her race. In the same season, four of the five POC houseguests were eliminated in the first five weeks of the show, the LA Times reported.</p><p>"At times, the Houseguests say things that we do not condone," <a href="https://people.com/tv/big-brother-producers-speak-out-bullying/">CBS said in a 2019 statement to People</a>. "We share some of the viewers' concerns about inappropriate behavior and offensive comments, and producers have addressed specific incidents with the Houseguests involved. However, there is absolutely no truth that the casting of the show is racially motivated, that the Houseguests' behavior is predetermined or that the outcome is controlled in any way."</p><p>Last year, Da'Vonne Rogers, who is Black and has competed three times on the show, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEF37UatlvA">highlighted its lack of diversity in an on-air speech</a>.</p><p>"Twenty-one seasons of winners and not one of those faces look like mine," Rogers said last year. "So, when I walked through those doors, I had that desire - had that determination to be the very first face to give hope to those behind me who have a desire to come in here and play this game. Because not seeing a face that looks like mine is very discouraging, it's hurtful, and it does make me feel like maybe it's impossible."</p><p>Directly following her remarks, Rogers' fellow houseguests evicted her from the all-star season by a 5-2 vote.</p><p>When <a href="https://ew.com/tv/big-brother-all-stars-julie-chen-moonves-davonne-interview/">Entertainment Weekly</a> asked Chen Moonves about Rogers' speech and the show's diversity last year, she pointed toward its three POC winners as players who could "argue they are all minorities who were outnumbered but went on to win."</p><p>But Song, who also criticized the remarks at the time, told Insider her win doesn't excuse the lack of diversity on the show nor does it explain the lack of Black winners.</p><div type="image" title="Big Brother season 4 cast photo" height="1830" width="3000" msid="86614359" hostid="261"></div><p>"I think it's completely missing the point," she said, adding that "to some extent, it's gaslighting.</p><p>"Just because we've had a few non-white winners and one openly gay winner does not mean that there is not systemic racism and bias built into the <keyword id="11899410" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="reality-tv" source="Orion">reality TV</keyword> world, let alone into CBS, and bigger picture in the US. And so I think it's very ignorant and naive for her to be able to make those kinds of flippant remarks," said Song, who currently resides in Belgium. </p><p>Rollins said CBS over the years created a "monster that racism festered in." </p><p>"And when they were asked about it - called to the mat about it - they did nothing about it until finally 22 seasons later. And that's sad," she added.</p><p>CBS did not return Insider's request for comment.</p><p>After she was evicted from "BB14," Rollins said she often was asked if she believed her race played a role in her elimination.</p><p>"I was like, oh, no, no, no, no, because I didn't want to believe that," she told Insider. "But the thing about racism is it doesn't hold up a sign and say, 'I am racist.' Unless you're a klan member or a <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/20120625/racist-skinheads-understanding-threat">skinhead</a>, racism is covert."</p><p>"Racism is in the dark corners of our minds. Sometimes we don't realize it sometimes it's just, we choose not to realize it. And sometimes we just don't care. And I think that's what happened with CBS collectively," she added.</p><h2>This season of "Big Brother" began as the most racially diverse season ever</h2><p>"I cannot speak for Black people," Song said. "I don't even pretend to know the struggles compared to mine as an Asian woman, but I do know that the casting process has been quite broken for a very long time. And so the fact that it's taken 23 seasons for us to see six people who share the same skin color in the house, I mean, that speaks volumes." </p><p>"This is about Black lives," she continued. "This is about Black Lives Matter. This is about the Black population. It's not about people of color. We can't, you know, try to soften it or whitewash it in that manner. This is really about Black people and solidarity." </p><p>Eight of the 16 houseguests who entered the "Big Brother" house when the season premiered in July identified as POC. The network <a href="https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/cbs-unscripted-shows-diversity-1234826214/">pledged in November last year to feature at least 50% Black and Indigenous people of color on all seasons</a> of its unscripted programs going forward, including "Big Brother" and "Survivor." </p><p>Both Rollins and Song said "The Cookout" was allowed to form and prosper because of the changes the network made ahead of the current "Big Brother" season.</p><p>"When you start from a place of honesty, that's where the changes can happen," Rollins said. "And so for CBS to finally - long overdue - make this decision, that enabled the six people to come in and do something special." </p><p>"It had to start with CBS actually trying to do better. And so I was glad that they finally did," she added. </p><p>Dr. Hunter Hargraves, an associate professor at California State University, Fullerton, who teaches contemporary American television studies, told Insider the changes on "Big Brother" this year that enabled "The Cookout" represented larger shifts in the reality TV landscape.</p><div type="image" title="&quot;Big Brother 23&quot; top three contestants" height="1178" width="2092" msid="86614365" hostid="261"></div><p>Other big-name reality shows, like ABC's "The Bachelor" franchise, <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-rachael-kirkconnell-matt-james-complete-timeline">have similarly undergone changes</a> after <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-racist-chris-harrison-rachael-kirkconnell-2021-2">longstanding criticism</a> over how they portrayed race and handled accusations of racism.</p><p>These changes came after the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-floyd-protests-defining-history-politics-election-black-lives-matter-2020-6">nationwide racial justice protests</a> last year sparked by the caught-on-video police killing of 46-year-old George Floyd in Minneapolis, Hargraves said.</p><p>"You're now starting to see some kind of like more 'woke' reality television. I'm thinking of the 'Queer Eye' reboot or something like 'RuPaul's Drag Race,'" he added.</p><p>On reality TV, topics like race are more easily dealt with on shows with more niche audiences - shows that air on cable networks like VH1 or Bravo, Hargraves said. But producers of more mainstream shows, like "Big Brother" and "The Bachelor" have had more difficulties.</p><p>"I definitely think there is trying to be this sort of like a balancing act that all programming, regardless of unscripted or scripted, has had to go through in the wake of last summer," he said. "How do networks diversify their programming options? How do they make what I assume is a sincere attempt to speak to the issues that cultural minorities face in a way that doesn't alienate the audience that you think is paying the bills?" </p><h2>"The Cookout" has led to backlash from some of "Big Brother's" fans </h2><p>"I have heard some call the formation of the Cookout a form of racism," Chen Moonves said in early September as she <a href="https://www.insider.com/big-brother-host-julie-chen-says-cookout-alliance-isnt-racist-2021-9">defended the all-Black alliance</a>. "In my humble opinion, it is not."</p><p>Chen Moonves said it was "impressive" to see the six players make it so far with their loyalty intact despite being on a show known for participants' deception and backstabbing.</p><p>"They're like, well, what if six white people got together and kicked out all the Black people? How is that any different?" Rollins said about "Big Brother" fans who've called the alliance racist. "It's 100% different. First of all, that's essentially what's happened all of these years, right? The white people get together and they kick out the Black people."</p><p>"Second of all things are not created equal," she added. "Black people come from a history of oppression and being left out and seen as other."</p><p>Rollins, who said she viewed the alliance as "righting a wrong," noted there was no malice or hatred between houseguests this season. All members of "The Cookout" were closely aligned with other members of the game outside the all-Black alliance for much of the season, she added. Members of "The Cookout" were often emotional when eliminating their friends, she said.</p><p>Song said "The Cookout" hadn't formed as an anti-white alliance, but a pro-Black alliance.</p><p>"I think it speaks volumes of how we've been programmed as a society where if anything makes us feel uncomfortable or we don't like it, we lash out," Song said. "And I think people who are right now lashing out and calling 'The Cookout' a racist alliance are people who are super scared and very uncomfortable and cannot see the beauty of it all. I see beauty."</p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>For the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have been introduced to the sorcery side of the company's comic books, with their release of "Doctor Strange" (in theaters November 4).<p>It's expected by this point that Marvel knows how to properly tell an origin story about one of its properties, and that holds with "Doctor Strange."&#xa0;Director Scott Derrickson ("Sinister") lays out what transforms&#xa0;egotistical neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange from master of the ER to master of the mystic arts. And Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange is perfect at the conflicted (and sarcastic) state he's in when he learns that he must find a new path after a horrific car accident robs him of the ability to be a surgeon.</p><p>But the visual effects are the real star of "Doctor Strange."</p><p>The closest thing to a psychedelic film that family-friendly Disney will allow, it's filled with dazzling visuals taking us into other dimensions and a kaleidoscope-like view of some of the biggest cities in the world that goes beyond what was done in Christopher Nolan's "Inception." Yes, even&#xa0;die-hard Nolan fans will have reason to see this.</p><p>In search of a way to heal his hands after the car accident, Strange travels East in search of alternate medicine. He learns of the Ancient One (played by Tilda Swinton, who is amazing as always, despite concerns over whitewashing). After getting a glimpse of what is really beyond the world around us, Strange is hooked and wants to become her disciple.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Fellow disciple Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) helps train Strange, but before you know it Strange has gobbled up all the information about the mystic arts to become a master. 'Doctor Strange' is the trippiest Marvel movie yet - and that's why you need to see it

She also points out that many children know how to navigate the tech marketplace, and that parents can take notes from them on when and how to spend th currency of data.</strong></li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</strong></li></ul><p>The drive for human contact - to see and be seen, to hear and be heard, to understand and be understood - is strong and positive. That more of these social connections are now digital - in "networked space," as leading privacy theorist Julie E. Cohen calls it - does not alter this drive.  We aim to nurture our children with sustained, genuine connections, both with us and with others.</p><p>The adult urge to connect with one another - especially to seek advice, reassurance, and commiseration around the inevitable hassles of raising children - is positive. It shows maturity. It shows emotional and psychological resilience. It shows willingness to learn from new ideas. It is positive in and of itself. It's the how, why, when, and with whom we connect that is often problematic for our children. We are connecting, but we are not reflecting. We are connecting but not necessarily sustaining ourselves or addressing those needs that are driving us to describe our most intimate challenges with our children as "status updates" or in 140 characters or to record them in the format of Nest Cam footage.</p><p>What can we do to "only connect" more mindfully? We can think before we click.  We can reflect more on what we are hoping to accomplish when we share our children's digital data. When we share, are we really looking for something more complex and elusive than a certain number of likes? By identifying and querying our reasons for sharing certain information in a certain context, we may make more mindful choices. You'd tell your teenager not to post a selfie from the bathtub. You should think about telling yourself not to post a shot of your toddler in the tub. You'd tell your teenager to use social media to create a positive portrayal of herself so future employers will be impressed by her savvy dissection of current events rather than how many tequila shots she had at Tommy's #houseparty last weekend, so you should think about telling yourself to post only a tasteful update about your ten-year-old's success at baseball rather than the fight he got into with his younger sister after the game ended. You can think of this "digital dossier" creation strategy as the "holiday card" rule of thumb: if you wouldn't put it in hard copy and mail it to a few hundred people in your life for display on their refrigerators, don't put it on the internet for thousands of people in, near, or outside of your life to repurpose and display indiscriminately.</p><p>We can think about kids, but actual youth input in and control of data-sharing decisions is largely a matter of personal and institutional connections. The law provides a limited to nonexistent framework for youth agency around whether, when, and why adults share their data. Even when kids under age thirteen go online and share their data in a commercial context, federal law doesn't require the digital service provider to get the kids' consent. Under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the provider must get consent from a parent. All of us can look for more and better ways to connect with the kids in our care to learn from and with them. For instance, parents can actively involve children in creating not just family media plans, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, but also a family data privacy plan. That plan can be a quick three parts: (1) familial concerns about and commitments to privacy, (2) research into the terms of use and other policies about existing or potential digital services that best align with the set of expressed preferences, and (3) some family habits that promote regular and responsible use of these or similar services. Some stock habits that might work well include the "holiday card" rule of thumb and "what would a thirteen-year-old say?" "What would smart Elmo say?" is also a possibility, but it's unclear whether Muppet artificial intelligence is more or less intelligent than an average adolescent.</p><p>Teens and kids are increasingly learning about how to use their real intelligence to make decisions about their digital privacy and other parts of their digital lives. Sometimes, those decisions include blocking parents from seeing certain social media content. Notably, in 2016, Washington state passed a law that appears to be the first of its type in the country that requires digital citizenship instruction in schools. There is a movement underway to persuade other states to follow suit. How "digital citizenship" will be defined and taught is still evolving, but under any conceivable definition, it should be a level of instruction that was not available to today's parents when they were kids back in Tom Sawyer's time.</p><p>Youth today are likely to possess a level of sophistication with their digital self-creation skills that transcends their parents'. Parents presumably will continue to possess superior skills in navigating the brick-and-mortar world and its institutions and in engaging in the type of risk-assessment "executive-functioning" skills that neuroscience tells us are more the province of the "olds" than of the youngins.</p><p>The likelihood that Tommy or any other of today's Tom Sawyers will want to sit down for a family summit and action planning is slim. They're too busy white-washing the fence all by themselves, without even being asked. But even in the absence of some sort of defined plan, a parental habit of checking in with children and teens as digital data decisions are made has the potential for significant positive impact on parental practices.</p><p>Teachers, educational administrators, school boards, legislative committees, vendors, and other decision makers outside the home also would do well do solicit youth input into data-handling decisions and options. Twenty-first- century Toms are lighting up digital territories. You get a pop-up ad: "Tom &amp; Huck Bro Co.: we give the olds a raft to ride through digital waters." Sick of meeting requests, #blessed photos, and parking structure drama, you click. You laugh. Tom &amp; Huck is a company of teenagers offering to serve as "personal guides to help adults have fun and be cool online." They charge $50 for each consulting session and less if you do a package. You laugh some more. Then you click on their YouTube channel. You're stunned into silence. Their last "how to" video had 2 million views. Since when did kids stop painting fences and start running the internet? </p><p>Most kids aren't tiny tech tycoons.  Most kids are players in the tech marketplace, though, through their own interactions with digital services and those of the adults in their lives. As we make decisions about whether and when to exchange our children's private data for free or low-cost digital services, we need to "follow the money." We don't need to go full Moneyball and come up with a dollar figure. We don't even need to think that we're engaging our kids in digital day labor by our handling of their data.</p><p>But we do need to recognize our kids' data as a form of currency in the twenty-first-century economy. It's also a future-cy because the choices we make about our children's private data today will likely affect their life prospects for years to come. And depending on the type of content we're sharenting, we may also be taking creative content from our children that could have value to them as intellectual property - a scenario that the Council of Europe addresses when it advises member states who create play-based resources online using youth contributions to have "measures in place to protect the child [creator]'s intellectual property rights."</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-mom-quit-corporate-job-and-launched-global-wellness-company-2019-9">I'm a mom who quit my job, sold my house, and invested every dollar I had into launching a company that's grown 2,000% in 5 years</a></em></p><p>The economics behind sharenting are typically opaque to users. The website for a social media platform tells you it's free. It doesn't ask for your credit card, so you don't ask what price you're paying or how you're paying it. The app for your favorite store pushes a discount code to your phone while you're shopping. You use the code to save money, and the store uses data about your purchase for its own purposes.  In these and many similar transactions, your children's data is part of the transaction. Your social media posts are about your kids, and your purchases are for them. You're paying for these digital and related services in part with your kids' capital.</p><p>Ask yourself: is the service you are getting worth parting with this information about your children?  In some cases, the answer is yes. Let's say that you need to buy diapers and you don't have a lot of money. Diapers cost a lot of money. It's worth letting your preferred retailer figure out that your four-year-old isn't toilet-trained yet to save money on those diapers. In many other instances, though, the price seems too high. You post a YouTube video of your child's remarkable invention at summer robot camp. It gets a lot of likes, but it also spawns a lot of copycat creators who crowd the field and undermine any potential for your child to be the leading developer of her tech vision.
