The overall net additions to the Indian telecom user base in June 2024 were 1.57 million, down from 2 million recorded in May 2024. This takes the total subscriber base from 1.169 billion in May 2024 to 1.171 billion in June 2024. With this, Jio's subscriber base has increased from 474.62 million in May 2024 to 476.53 million in June 2024. Out of the 476.53 million subscribers, the company’s <keyword id="22859675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="active-subscriber-base" source="keywords">active subscriber base</keyword> stood at 440.94 million, which is 92.53%. <h2>Airtel adds 1.25 million subscribers</h2>Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel has once again added 1.25 million subscribers, just like May 2024. With this, the company's subscriber base has increased from 387.77 million in May 2024 to 389.02 million in June 2024. Airtel continues to enjoy a high active subscriber base. The company's active subscribers stand at 384.83 million users out of its 389.02 million users, which is 98.92% of its total user base. <h2>Vi continues to bleed subscribers</h2>Vi, which is yet to launch 5G services in the country has once again reported a decline in subscribers. The company lost nearly a million users in June 2024 with a decline of 860,889 users. The company’s subscriber base decreased from 218.16 million in May 2024 to 217.30 million users in June 2024. Out of the 217.30 million users, the company’s active user base stands at 188.26 million users, which is 86.64%. <h2>State-run BSNL loses subscribers</h2>State-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) reported a loss of 0.75 million subscribers in June 2024. With this, the telco's user base has decreased from 86.33 million in May 2024 to 85.58 million in June 2024. <h2><keyword id="22859674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MNP-requests" source="keywords">MNP requests</keyword> continue to grow</h2>Mobile number portability (MNP), which allows users to shift from one telecom operator to another, recorded 11.84 million requests during May 2024. Reliance Jio and Airtel gained over 3 million subscribers in June, Vi lost nearly a million

Mobile phone users might have to spend notably more for their recharge packs after the general election, as reports indicate that telecom firms are gearing up for a fourth round of <keyword id="891186" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tariff-hikes" source="Orion">tariff hikes</keyword> in recent times. According to a report by brokerage Axis Capital, a meaningful hike of approximately 25% by operators is anticipated soon. This surge is attributed to a stable competitive environment, the necessity to bolster profitability post heavy <keyword id="21245910" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-investments" source="keywords">5G investments</keyword>, and ongoing government support. Despite the apparent magnitude of the increase, the report suggests it should be manageable for both urban and rural users. Urban households may witness a rise in telecom expenditure from 3.2% to 3.6% of total expenditure, while for rural subscribers, spending could escalate from 5.2% to 5.9%. Analysts predict that the consumers are likely to remain loyal and pay up, especially if they continue to enjoy high-speed connectivity — a vital need of these modern times. For <keyword id="20055601" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="telecom-operators" source="keywords">telecom operators</keyword>, the projected roughly 25% hike in headline rates is expected to correspond to a 16% growth in the average revenue per user (ARPU), as estimated by Axis Capital. However, their figures stood at Rs 208 and Rs 145 respectively for the October-December 2023 period. Peeyush Vaish, TMT industry leader at Deloitte, South Asia, anticipates a 10-15% increase in ARPUs, adding approximately Rs 100 per subscriber by the end of this calendar year. This hike is expected to be driven by price increases for 4G/5G bundled packs and the phasing out of low-value packs. Analysts foresee Bharti Airtel and Jio emerging as the primary beneficiaries of the <keyword id="21656632" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wireless-pack-price-hike" source="keywords">wireless pack price hike</keyword>. While Vi is also expected to boost its ARPU by fortifying its network and minimising subscriber churn, the overall revenue impact may still be limited compared to its competitors. At the end of Q4 FY24, Jio’s total assets stood at Rs 4,87,405 crore, while its net profit from January to March climbed to Rs 5,337 crore from Rs 4,716 crore a year ago. Mobile recharge packs to get more expensive as telcos gear up for another round of tariff hikes: Report

There are five new plans in total starting at ₹501 and going up to ₹2,595. The new plans have been introduced to include the recently launched Disney+ Hotstar Mobile plan. Vi previously offered the Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription along with its recharge plans. In addition to a one year subscription of Disney+ Hotstar, these Vi prepaid plans also offer unlimited voice calls, 100 SMS per day and 3GB of data per day along with extra data up to 48GB. Customers also get access to Vi Movies and TV Classic service for movies, TV shows, live TV and news. There’s also a data add-on pack priced at ₹601 that offers 75GB of data and Disney+ Hotstar Mobile for one year. This booster pack can be used along with an existing recharge plan. These prepaid plans also come with Vi’s ‘Binge All Night’ and ‘Weekend Data Rollover” offers. Under the Binge All Night offer, Vi users can get unlimited data between 12 am and 6 am daily. Airtel has increased the price of this plan from ₹598 to ₹719. Jio and Vodafone offer the same plan for ₹555 and ₹599 respectively. This means that Airtel’s ₹719 plan is nearly 30% costlier than Jio’s ₹555 plan and over 20% costlier than Vodafone Idea’s ₹599 plan. Another plan that is popular among users is the 2GB data per day plan. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.45 and gained further to 83.44 against the greenback, registering a rise of 5 paise from its previous close. On Friday, the rupee settled at 83.49 against the US dollar. According to CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari the Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) seems determined to prevent the rupee from depreciating below 83.70. Even with pressure from oil companies due to elevated oil prices. "Overall, positive economic indicators such as a good growth rate, stable inflation, a reduced fiscal deficit, record-high RBI forex reserves, and a pipeline of inflows are all supportive factors that should ideally bolster the rupee," Pabari said, adding that given these factors, the rupee is expected to trade within a broad range of 83.20 to 83.70 levels. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 104.86, lower by 0.01 per cent. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.03 per cent to USD 86.51 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share BSE Sensex fell 174.57 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 79,822.03 points. The broader NSE Nifty declined 13.05 points, or 0.05 per cent, to 24,310.80 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Friday, as they purchased shares worth Rs 1,241.33 crore, according to exchange data. On the domestic macroeconomic front, India's forex reserves dropped USD 1.713 billion to USD 651.997 billion for the week ended June 28, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Friday. In the previous reporting week, the overall kitty had dropped USD 2.922 billion to USD 652.895 billion. The reserves had touched an all-time high of USD 655.817 billion on June 7 this year.
