Battery electric vehicle (BEV) adoption, expected to make up over 10 per cent of global auto sales, has not curbed oil consumption. According to a report by <keyword id="48670" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="morgan-stanley" source="Orion">Morgan Stanley</keyword>, the dichotomy between the rise in electric vehicle purchases and increased oil demand challenges conventional expectations. Norway, boasting the highest EV penetration globally, serves as a compelling case study. Despite EVs constituting 80 per cent of new auto sales, the country's oil usage has not collapsed. Similar trends are observed in China, the largest EV market, where oil demand surged by 50 per cent alongside EV penetration reaching over 20 per cent. The critical factor overlooked by many is that road transport comprises less than half of global oil consumption. Contrary to popular belief, road transport represents only part of the oil consumption picture. Sectors like jet fuel, petrochemicals, and industrial/residential heating contribute significantly to global oil demand. The <keyword id="69313" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="international-energy-agency" source="Orion">International Energy Agency</keyword> (<keyword id="66776" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iea" source="Orion">IEA</keyword>) projects the petrochemical sector to be the primary driver of future oil demand. Jet fuel demand is also expected to grow as airline travel returns to pre-pandemic levels. Energy transitions unfold over decades, and a historical review reveals that new technologies take time to achieve dominance. Currently, fossil fuels account for over 80 per cent of primary energy consumption, while solar and wind make up just over 5 per cent. Government policies promoting a shift toward net-zero emissions and the adoption of cost-efficient renewables will alter this balance gradually. While oil's share of the energy mix has diminished from 40 per cent in 1965 to less than a third today, overall energy consumption has more than tripled. Predictions of a collapse in oil demand are considered too pessimistic. Global oil demand is on track to hit record levels by the end of the year, driven by stronger-than-expected global GDP growth and improved jet fuel demand. Major oil producers, including <keyword id="11974220" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="opec" source="Orion">OPEC</keyword> and Russia, have responded cautiously to increased demand. Underinvestment in oil production poses a serious concern, as the global capital expenditure for exploration has halved from its 2014 peak to less than USD 400 billion in 2022. While energy transition is underway, a rapid decline in oil demand appears distant. The current levels of investment fall short of meeting potential oil demand growth, pointing toward a compelling outlook for energy equities amid a period of "tighter for longer" oil market conditions. Oil's resilience: Defying decline amidst electric vehicle surge, global demand hits record highs

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Students for Fair Admissions wants the Supreme Court to eliminate race as a factor in university admissions.</li><li>Affirmative-action supporters say such a move would decrease racial diversity on college campuses.</li></ul>For more than four decades, American colleges and universities have sought to make their campuses more diverse by considering race in their admissions processes. But the Supreme Court may soon deem those policies unconstitutional – a decision that affirmative-action supporters fear, and opponents have long hoped for."I represent so many communities in which affirmative action benefits us all the time," Agustín León-Sáenz, a first-generation immigrant from Ecuador and a sophomore at Harvard, told Insider. "Seeing the possibility of having it taken away would be so absolutely devastating."León-Sáenz, along with dozens of affirmative-action proponents, plan to rally outside of the Supreme Court on Monday as the justices hear two high-profile challenges that call for eliminating the consideration of race in university admissions. They and other advocates of the policy argue that affirmative action is about leveling the playing field, granting historically underrepresented groups the opportunity to access a higher education."It was never about removing access or prioritizing one certain population group or one student group over any other in admissions," said León-Sáenz, who serves as a board member of Harvard Fuerza Latina, a cultural affinity organization on campus.Students for Fair Admissions, a nonprofit led by conservative activist Edward Blum and the plaintiff in both cases, alleges the opposite: universities are unlawfully giving "racial preferences" to underrepresented minorities, including Black, Hispanic and Native American applicants, at the expense of other groups. Specifically, the organization claims that Harvard discriminated against Asian applicants by using race in its admissions, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discriminated against white and Asian applicants.After both of the universities denied those claims and lower courts sided with them, SFFA turned to the Supreme Court, urging the justices to abolish race as a factor in admissions and to overturn Grutter v. Bollinger, a nearly 20-year-old landmark decision that upheld affirmative action."We think that people should be treated as individuals – not on the basis of their membership in a racial group," Wen Fa, a senior attorney at the Pacific Legal Foundation who filed a legal brief supporting SFFA, told Insider, calling affirmative action efforts "wrong and pernicious."The Supreme Court has over the years confronted the role of race in university admissions and repeatedly maintained the constitutionality of affirmative action. But the current 6-3 conservative majority could overturn that precedent.SFFA claims that universities like Harvard and UNC have over-emphasized race in their admissions policies, violating Title VI the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibits private institutions that receive federal funding from discriminating on the basis of race, and the Constitution's equal protection clause.Regardless of their race, students should be allowed to "work towards your dreams and not have the university admissions policy stand in your way just in an effort to achieve a racially balanced class," Fa said.<h2>Racial diversity in colleges and universities could plummet</h2>Experts warn that ending race-conscious admissions policies could have ripple effects for minority students across higher education and beyond, making them less likely to be enrolled in college and eventually enter the workforce. Studies have shown that without affirmative action programs in universities, <a href="https://now.tufts.edu/2022/10/06/how-affirmative-action-bans-make-selective-colleges-and-workforce-less-diverse">racial diversity</a> decreases as enrollment rates among students of color decline. "Even though race does not play a significant factor" in admissions, David Hinojosa, an attorney at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, told Insider, "The consequences of it are much more severe because it sends a signal to students of color, despite their high qualifications, that universities don't want them to apply."Professors say that classroom discussions are more fruitful with a diverse student body, and that problems confronting "21st century America require diverse perspectives," Hinojosa, who will argue the case in favor of UNC's admissions policies on Monday, added.Some experts say that while admissions processes might dramatically change if the court rules that race-conscious practices are illegal, they don't predict a doomsday scenario.Colleges will just become more "deceitful and they'll just consider race in other ways without saying so explicitly," Josh Blackman, a professor at South Texas College of Law, told Insider.But in practice, ending affirmative action policies at major universities has meant dramatic drops in the number of students of color accepted to those schools. Both the University of Michigan and the University of California, in legal briefs filed to the Supreme Court, say their push to create diverse classes without affirmative action policies – which were banned in both states more than 15 years ago – <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/26/us/affirmative-action-admissions-supreme-court.html?partner=slack&amp;smid=sl-share">have largely failed</a>. Just under 4% of the 2021 incoming class of first-year students at the University of Michigan were Black students, the school wrote <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/21/21-707/232452/20220801155548779_Nos.%2020-1199%2021-707%20U-M%20amicus%20ISO%20resps..pdf">in its brief</a>. Similarly, about 3.7% of <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/21/21-707/232363/20220801140524045_20-1199%2021-707%20bsac%20University%20of%20California.pdf">incoming students last year at UC Berkeley</a> were Black. For León-Sáenz, tossing out race-conscious admissions will make it harder for schools to achieve diversity. Though Harvard strives toward that goal, Hispanic students account for around 12% of the latest class admitted, though they make up roughly <a href="https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/US/RHI725221">19% of the national population.</a> "There is still a long way to go when it comes to equitable admissions," León-Sáenz said, "We're gonna continue fighting because it affects every member of our community."The Supreme Court is expected to hand down its decisions in the pair of cases by June.

A 30 per cent decline in sales volume on an already weak base would lead to a nearly six-fold increase in a net loss to Rs 6,000 crore for commercial vehicle (CV) makers this fiscal, <keyword id="183985" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRISIL-Ratings">Crisil Ratings</keyword> said in the release. "Two consecutive years of high de-growth are likely to result in CV volume reaching its lowest point in 10 years. Last time, in 2009-10, the total commercial vehicle sale in the country had clocked 5,33,000 units. Noting that commercial vehicles are a critical logistical link to the economy, it said a quick recovery in sales volume is critical as a slower rebound can elongate the pain for manufacturers. According to Crisil, the CV makers were already hit by new overloading norms and a slowing economy when the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, and sales volume had fallen 29 per cent in the fiscal year ended March 2020. In the first quarter of this fiscal, volume plunged another 85 per cent because of the pandemic-driven lockdown, it said. "The resultant sharp slowdown in industrial activity has hard-braked sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCVs), which account for two-thirds of the industry revenue. Sales of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) may fare better with support from the rural economy and private consumption," Crisil stated. Noting that the situation could constrain credit metrics in the current fiscal, the ratings agency said that the credit profiles of manufacturers will be supported by strong balance sheets and comfortable cash buffers Moreover, manufacturers may partly absorb BS-VI upgrade costs in their quest to stimulate demand. That could drive down segment operating margins to near-zero from an already low 6 per cent in fiscal 2020, and increase losses, said Gupta. Cash flows may stretch further as manufacturers will tend to support key stakeholders to reduce stress across the value chain and help them rebound next fiscal - such as by providing dealers leeway on payment terms and making timely payments to auto-component suppliers, Crisil said. However, that would temporarily increase the working capital requirements and raise the industry's debt by almost a third to Rs 40,000 crore this fiscal, it said. Consequently, credit metrics of the sector would be constrained, but credit profiles will be supported by strong balance sheets and expectation of a bounce-back next fiscal, it added. "The pandemic struck when the industry's gearing was 0.5 times - a shade lower than the year before the previous downturn in 2014. Despite the rise, we expect the gearing to be comfortable at 0.7 times by the end of the current fiscal. "Besides, manufacturers also have comfortable cash liquidity of nearly two times debt servicing needs," said Naveen Vaidyanathan, Associate Director, Crisil Ratings, According to Crisil while rising debt and weak profitability may constrain interest cover to nearly 1.5 times this fiscal from an average 7.1 times in the past five years, the number should recover next year with sales volume. Maybe he's just <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/mbvd/kim-jong-un-reportedly-hospitalized-after-breaking-both-ankl#2x118yo">recovering from ankle surgery</a>. No one outside the country really knows for sure - at least no one who's in a position to talk about it publicly. 
And if an earlier, far more severe and more public North Korean upheaval is any guide, the world may never know.
In 1995, one or even two entire army corps might have been plotting an insurrection at the moment the Kim regime was at its weakest. The fact that so little is known about the incident 20 years later is an instructive reminder of how Pyongyang excels at perpetuating its own survival - and suppressing the truth in the process.

<h3>What Actually Happened In 1995?</h3>
In 1995, North Korea was experiencing one of the most severe crises in its history. The end of Cold War-era subsidies from the Soviet Union led to the collapse of the north's once-powerful manufacturing sector; meanwhile Pyongyang feared that liberalizing the economy in the face of an economic depression and growing food shortages would weaken a regime committed to hardcore centralization. As a result the Kim dynasty survived the famine years - while creating a catastrophe that <a href="https://cup.columbia.edu/book/978-0-231-14000-3/famine-in-north-korea">killed around one million people</a> between 1994 and 1998.
People were dying, infrastructure was collapsing, food was scarce, and experts were <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2012/08/the-long-history-of-wrongly-predicting-north-koreas-collapse/260769/">widely predicting</a> the Pyongyang regime couldn't survive without the Cold War-era power balance to sustain it. Regime founder Kim Il Sung had died also in 1994, meaning one of the government's pillars of legitimacy was gone - replaced with Kim Jong-Il, the late dictator's son and someone who appeared vulnerable and untested to many outside observers.
In the spring of 1995, North Korea's Sixth Army Corps, which regional expert Michael Madden <a href="http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2012/10/31/was_a_north_korean_general_really_executed_by_mortar_fire">describes</a> as "one of the military's nine major regular army units," was purged and disbanded. The corps, which was based in the northeastern coastal city of Chongjin, was violently cleansed of its top leadership after an army unit commanded by Kim Jong-Il's brother-in-law deployed to the area. Per Madden, 
Scores of commanders and officers were reportedly executed. Some accounts claim a firing squad brandishing machine guns mowed them down. Other accounts say the officers were tied up and restrained in their headquarters, which was burned down.
Few dispute that a major army unit was liquidated during perhaps the most desperate point in the regime's recent history. The question is why. 
Madden admits that "the details remain unclear" but concludes that the corps "abandoned their posts and might have mobilized with the intention of marching on the capital." 
Scholars Victor Cha and Nicholas Anderson <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=JOOi64jEcakC&amp;pg=PA110&amp;lpg=PA110&amp;dq=chongjin+north+korea+1995+coup+6th+corps&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=OBwSRxcxFx&amp;sig=IBTe9wzHJqTMGA7yEb2m8WUTV6U&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=3js0VInVGcH7sASOyoCgCg&amp;ved=0CD0Q6AEwBA#v=onepage&amp;q=chongjin%20north%20korea%201995%20coup%206th%20corps&amp;f=false">described a fairly developed plot</a> to split the military and undermine the Kim regime: "In 1995, upset with Pyongyang's decision not to ship food to the Hamgyong Provinces, senior officers of the VI Corps stationed in Chongjin sought to take control of a university, a communications center, Chongjin port and missile installations and reportedly planned to team up with VII Corps ... to oppose the government," they write in an essay included in the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/North-Korea-Transition-Politics-Economy/dp/1442218126">North Korea in Transition</a>.
Barbara Demick, the Los Angeles Times' current Beijing bureau chief and author of the critically lauded book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Nothing-Envy-Ordinary-Lives-North/dp/0385523912">Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea</a>," isn't so sure. In an 2009 <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/barbara-demick-on-life-in-north-korea">interview</a> with The New Yorker, she said it's unlikely an attempted coup was underway in 1995, basing her conclusion on extensive work with North Korean defectors from Chongjin whose narratives formed the core of her book:
I know many North Koreans who lived in Chongjin at the time; they heard rumors of a coup attempt. I don't think it's true. The more plausible story is that Kim Jong Il thought they were taking too big a cut of the lucrative trading at the Chinese border. (The North Korean military runs trading companies that sell everything from pine mushrooms to amphetamines.) During the famine many soldiers died of starvation themselves. But nobody has ever confirmed a story that they rebelled en masse.

<h3>The Kim Regime's Chilling Resilience</h3>
In a moment of acute national crisis a surprisingly large portion of the North Korean military was involved in insubordinate activities deemed threatening enough to justify a rapid purge.
It's still unknown whether these activities were economic - the circumvention of North Korea's command economy during a deep famine - or political, or some combination of the two. The fact is that a seemingly pivotal event which by one account might have involved the potential defection of a full 2/9ths of North Korea's major regular army corps is only vaguely understood almost 20 years later.
This helps explain the folly of looking for an inflection point in North Korea's latest mysteries. 
North Korea is an opaque and remarkably stable autocracy with no recent confirmed history of serious coup attempts or civil conflict. It's had two peaceful leadership transitions in recent decades even if they were from within the regime itself. Even the few organized challenges to the system's resiliency might not have been what they seem to be. Pyongyang has not only weathered severe crises, but succeeded in almost totally hiding them from the world's view in the process.
The Kim regime may well fall apart one day. But if the 1995 incident and the persisting uncertainty over its nature and origins is any indication, it'll likely happen in public, rapid, and dramatic fashion - in a way that won't require weeks or even decades of outside guesswork.
