<ul class="summary-list"><li>Disney hosted its official biennial fan club meeting, D23, on Saturday.</li><li>During the event, CEO Bob Iger teased the return of fan-favorite franchises in new movies and shows.</li></ul><p>At Disney's biennial D23 event this weekend, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bob-iger-career-2024-3">CEO Bob Iger</a> teased the return of fan-favorite characters from "The Mandalorian" and "Toy Story" in new movies and shows from the entertainment giant.</p><p>The event, which runs through August 11th in Anaheim, California — where <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-theme-parks-struggle-another-warning-sign-for-the-economy-2024-8">Disneyland Park</a> makes its home — highlights the projects Disney is working on in its animation studios and theme parks worldwide.</p><p>In past years, the D23 exposition has unveiled new trailers and offered sneak peeks at new attractions, including live-action series for Disney+ and new projects from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-every-pixar-movie-advanced-animation-toy-story-cars-2-2021-8">Pixar Animation Studios</a>.</p><p>"It is such a privilege for me to lead such a remarkable company that brings joy to so many people around the world — both to the young, and as Walt liked to say, the young at heart," Iger said Friday night as he kicked off the Disney Entertainment Showcase. "We have a lot to be proud of and even more to look forward to."</p><p>Among the projects Disney highlighted at this year's event was a trailer for an upcoming film from the "Star Wars" universe, "The Mandalorian and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-mandalorian-baby-yoda-details-to-know-grogu-2023-4">Grogu</a>" directed by Jon Favreau. The film, starring Pedro Pascal, is set for release on May 22, 2026, and is currently in production.</p><p>The expo also showcased "Moana 2," which will debut in theaters on November 27 of this year. The film will feature the return of the voice of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-moana-review-2016-11">Moana</a>, Auli'i Cravalho, and Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson as Maui, in addition to new characters like Moana's little sister, Simea.</p><p>The studio also revealed they are working on sequels in the "Toy Story" and "Incredibles" franchises. "Toy Story 5" will be released in theaters on June 19, 2026, but "The Incredibles 3" does not yet have a release date.</p><p>Disney didn't stop there. The company also announced release dates for "Avatar: Fire and Ash," the latest in the James Cameron series following the alien race of the Na'vi that will be released next year, and concept art for "Frozen 3," which will hit movie theaters in 2027.</p><p>A new trailer for the photorealistic animated "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mufasa-the-lion-king-prequel-info-2022-9">Mufasa: The Lion King</a>," which will be released this December, closed out the showcase.</p><p>"Our deep bond with fans, forged over a century of storytelling, is stronger today than ever before — driven by the unmatched strength of our creative studios, the wide appeal of our brands and franchises, and the innovative ways that we bring our stories to life in our theme parks and experiences," Iger said Friday during his opening remarks.</p><p>He added that the world needs to be entertained — perhaps now more than ever — and the company takes that responsibility "seriously."</p><p>"We are grateful for every moment, every memory that we're fortunate enough to be part of," Iger said. "And we're grateful to you for caring so much about the things we create and inviting Disney into your lives in such profound ways."</p><p>Representatives for Disney directed Business Insider to a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.d23press.com/pressrelease/the-unmatched-power-of-disney-storytelling-on-display-from-disney-entertainment-on-night-one-of-d23-the-ultimate-disney-fan-event/">press release</a> about the event but did not respond to questions about the release date for "Incredibles 3" and other newly announced projects.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The 30-person guest list for Prince Philip's funeral has been revealed by Buckingham Palace. </li><li>Among the family and friends who will attend are Philip's children and grandchildren.</li><li>The funeral was downsized as a result of COVID-19 restrictions in the UK.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/category/prince-philip-death">Prince Philip's funeral</a> will take place on Saturday, April 17, with only 30 mourners - including <keyword id="72980" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="royal-family">royal family</keyword> members - set to attend due to current COVID-19 restrictions in the UK. </p><p>Among the select individuals who will be able to pay their respects to the UK's longest consort are his family and friends who will attend the 3 p.m. ceremony at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on Saturday. </p><p>The Queen entered a two-week mourning period on the day her husband and consort of 73 years died, and she will formally continue to mourn <a href="https://www.insider.com/prince-philip-dead-funeral-arrangements-queen-mourning-period-2021-4">for a further period following the funeral.</a></p><p>Alongside their mother, Prince Philip's four children - <a href="https://www.insider.com/duke-of-edinburgh-title-may-go-to-charles-not-edward-2021-4">Prince Charles, who will inherit Philip's royal titles,</a> Anne, Princess Royal, Prince Andrew and Edward, Earl of Wessex - will attend the funeral.</p><p>Princes Charles, Andrew, Edward and Princess Anne, as well as his grandsons, Princes William and Harry, will walk alongside the hearse to the chapel, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-56761074">according to the BBC.</a></p><p>Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall has been at the forefront of royal activity since her marriage to Prince Charles in 2005, when she became Philip's daughter-in-law, and the funeral will be no exception. </p><p>Prince William and Prince Harry, Prince Philip's grandsons, will be reunited in public for the first time since <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-prince-harry-meghan-markle-kate-middleton-prince-william-reunion-2020-3">March 2020.</a> And the brothers will walk behind their grandfather's coffin in the same way they did <a href="https://www.insider.com/prince-philip-promised-walk-with-william-harry-at-diana-funeral-2021-4">alongside Philip for Princess Diana's funeral in 1997. </a></p><p>Among Philip's other grandchildren that will pay their respects were Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, and Lady Louise Windsor, and James, Viscount Severn.  </p><p>While Kate Middleton will be in attendance, <a href="https://www.insider.com/is-it-safe-to-fly-pregnant-during-covid-meghan-markle-2021-4">Meghan Markle did not receive clearance from her physician</a> to fly to the UK while heavily pregnant with her second child. </p><p>Also in attendance will be Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie's husbands, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Jack Brooksbank, respectively; Prince Edward's wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex; Princess Anne's husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence; and Zara Tindall's husband, Mike Tindall.</p><p>The guest list will also include David Armstrong-Jones, the Earl of Snowdon; Lady Sarah Chatto; Daniel Chatto; Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester; Prince Edward, Duke of Kent; Princess Alexandra; and Penelope Knatchbull, Countess Mountbatten of Burma.</p><p>Three German relatives will also be at the funeral: Bernhard, Hereditary Prince of Baden; Prince Donatus, Landgrave of Hesse; and Prince Philipp of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.</p><p>The late <a href="https://www.insider.com/prince-philip-dead-2021-3">Duke of Edinburgh died last week aged 99</a>, but the public will not be able to <a href="https://www.insider.com/prince-philip-dead-funeral-arrangements-queen-mourning-period-2021-4">pay their respects in the traditional way</a> due to social distancing measures in place.</p><p>Current UK guidance stipulates that "Funeral ceremonies must have no more than 30 people attending, whether indoors or outdoors," however this figure "does not include anyone working at the event."</p><p><a href="https://news.sky.com/story/prince-philip-boris-johnson-will-not-attend-duke-of-edinburghs-funeral-and-will-give-up-seat-for-a-family-member-12271934">Sky News revealed</a> that Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that he would give up his space at the funeral to allow for family members to attend in his place. </p><p><a href="https://royalcentral.co.uk/uk/philip/prince-philip-to-be-interred-in-the-royal-vault-of-st-georges-chapel-until-the-queens-death-158440/">As reported by Royal Central</a>, Prince Philip will ultimately be interred in the Royal Vault of St George's Chapel where he will remain until Queen Elizabeth II dies.</p><p>The report notes that Philip will then be buried alongside his wife in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, where King George VI and the Queen Mother are buried, and Princess Margaret's cremated ashes lie. </p>

10 Things in Politics: These are Trump's potential running mates in 2024

<p><div class="image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source">Vincenzo Pinto/AFP</p><p class="caption">Italian archbishop Rino Fisichella holds the ashes of Saint Peter before a ceremony at the <keyword id="54513" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vatican">Vatican</keyword>, on November 24, 2013.</p></div></div></div>Bones believed to belong to Saint Peter, one of the founding fathers of the Catholic Church, went on display for the first time Sunday, as <keyword id="22680" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pope">Pope</keyword> Francis held a ceremony to end the "Year of Faith".</p>
<p>Tens of thousands of pilgrims gathered to catch a glimpse of the remains, eight fragments of bone between two and three centimetres (around one inch) long displayed on an ivory bed within a bronze chest on a pedestal in St. Peter's Square.</p>
<p>The chest, given to pope Paul VI in 1971 and usually kept in the tiny chapel of the papal apartments, was decorated with a carving of Peter, who was a fisherman before becoming the Church's first pope, casting his nets into the sea.</p>
<p>At the start of the solemn ceremony, Francis prayed before the chest, bordered by white and yellow roses, before blessing the bones with incense.</p>
<p>The bones have long been the object of controversy between historians and archaeologists: they were first discovered in a 1940 dig next to an ancient monument honouring Saint Peter, but ended up gathering dust in a storage box.</p>
<p>It was not until archaeologist Margherita Guarducci discovered graffiti near the excavated tomb reading "Petros eni", which could mean "Peter is here", that she requested tests on the fragments.</p>
<p>She found they belonged to a robust man who died aged between 60 and 70 and had been buried in a purple, gold-threaded cloth -- enough to convince Paul VI to say in 1968 that Peter's bones had been identified "in a convincing manner."</p>
<p>With no DNA evidence to support the find, the debate over whether they really do belong to one of Jesus Christ's apostles is likely to continue, but the Vatican has said it "has no intention of opening up any argument."</p>
<p>"Faith, the people of God, have always believed these to be the relics of the apostle Peter, and we continue to venerate them in this way," Rino Fisichella, head of the pontifical council for evangelisation, said in the Vatican's newspaper L'Osservatore Romano.</p>
<p>The ceremony brought to an end the Vatican's "Year of Faith", a Benedict XVI initiative which began on October 11, 2012 to mark the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vatican II Council, which approved key Catholic Church reforms.</p>
<p>The project's principle aim was to tackle the decline of religious practice in the developed world, particularly in Europe.</p>
<p>The Vatican said the "Year of Faith" had attracted 8.5 million pilgrims to Rome.</p>

His aversion to signing off on detainees' transfers is so strong that he seems willing to ignore Obama's preferred timeline.</p><p>The Obama administration wants to cut the number of remaining detainees at Guantanamo Bay by almost half - and the only thing missing is Carter's signature. </p><p>Last month, The New York Times reported that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-is-finally-about-to-announce-a-plan-to-close-guantanamo-bay-2015-7" target="_blank">White </a><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-is-finally-about-to-announce-a-plan-to-close-guantanamo-bay-2015-7" target="_blank">House national security adviser Susan Rice had presented Carter</a> with a memo that said he would have one month to <span>make decisions on transferring the prisoners away from Guantanamo.</span></span></p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-is-finally-about-to-announce-a-plan-to-close-guantanamo-bay-2015-7" target="_blank">White House had also announced last month that it was in the final phase</a> of putting together a plan that would allow them to close the prison. Three weeks later, it has yet to release a detailed plan.</p><p>The prison has been the source of many controversies since its establishment during the administration of former President George W. Bush. But 43 of the 52 prisoners that have been cleared are Yemeni, and the US government does not want to let them go back to their country since they do not deem the Yemeni government stable enough to monitor the released detainees, <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/08/09/he-s-keeping-half-of-gitmo-locked-up-against-the-white-house-s-wishes.html?via=desktop&amp;source=twitter" target="_blank">according to The Daily Beast's report</a>.</span></p><p>One defense official told The Daily Beast that Carter was under pressure from the White House to sign off on detainees' releases more swiftly. But Carter already noted in June he was not confident the prison would close by the end of the administration and said he would not let himself be pressured. </p><p><span>"I'm not confident, but I am hopeful. I think we'll have a good proposal, and I think we're hoping it wins the support that it needs in Congress, so that we can move forward," Carter said during an interview with </span><a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ash-carter-not-confident-guantanamo-can-be-shut-by-end-of-obamas-presidency/" target="_blank">CBS News</a> in June.<span><br /></span></p><p>Some defense officials also defended Carter, saying the cases he had to sign off on were among the toughest to resolve. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>President Barack Obama on Tuesday unveiled a plan to make good on one of his earliest campaign pledges:&#xa0;to shut down the Guantanamo Bay detention center&#xa0;before his term ends in January.<p>In a statement from the White House on Tuesday, Obama announced a proposal&#xa0;to close the US military prison in Cuba, which was originally opened in 2002 by former President George W. Bush.</p><p>"When it becomes clear that something is not working as intended, when it does not advance our security, we have to change course," Obama said on Tuesday.</p><p>"For many years it has been clear that the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay does not advance our national security, it undermines it ...<span>When I talk to other world leaders they bring up the fact that Guantanamo is not resolved." Obama said on Tuesday."</span></p><p>"Keeping this facility open is contrary to our values. It undermines our standing in the world, it is viewed as a stain on our broader record of upholding the highest standards of rule of law."</p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p>The long-awaited plan to close Guantanamo dates back to the 2008 presidential campaign. In one of his first official acts as president, he signed an executive order to close the facility within one year.</p><p><span>"I will keep working to shut down the prison at Guantanamo: it's expensive, it's unnecessary, and it only serves as a recruitment brochure for our enemies," </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-final-state-of-the-union-quotes-2016-1" target="_blank">Obama said</a><span> in his final State of the Union address last month.</span></p><p>Despite vehement opposition from Republican members of Congress, Obama has still vowed to shut down the center.</p><p><span></span><span>"Despite the <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword>, we've made progress, with the nearly 800 detainees once held at Guantanamo, more than 85% have already been transferred to other countries," Obama said on Tuesday.</span></p><p><span>"This is about closing a chapter in&#xa0;our history, it reflects the lessons we've learned since 9/11."</span></p><h3>The price of Guantanamo</h3><p><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>There are approximately 2,000 military and civilian personnel assigned to Guantanamo&#xa0;and&#xa0;<a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/guantanamo/article2203501.html" target="_blank">91 inmates</a>&#xa0;held there.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The holding of the prisoners, coupled with operating expenditures, costs the US close to </span><a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/president-obama-expected-make-statement-guantanamo-n524131" target="_blank">$180 million a year</a><span>.</span></span></span></p><p><span>According to the Department of <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">Defense</keyword>, annual recurring costs at Guantanamo are between <a href="http://www.defense.gov/News/News-Releases/News-Release-View/Article/671225/statement-by-pentagon-press-secretary-peter-cook-on-submission-of-guantanamo-cl" target="_blank">$65 million and $85 million</a> higher than any other US facility. </span></p><p><span>Therefore closing Guantanamo could generate at least $335 million in net savings over &#xa0;the next 10 years and up to $1.7 billion in net savings over 20 years, according to the Department of Defense.</span>&#xa0;</p><h3>Obama's proposal</h3><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>In short, here are a few key points of Obama's plan to close Guantanamo.<p>1.&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0; Securely and responsibly transferring to foreign countries detainees who have been designated for transfer by the president's national security team;</p><p>2.&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0; Continuing to review the threat posed by those detainees who are not currently eligible for transfer through the Periodic Review Board (PRB);</p><p>3.&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0; Identifying individualized dispositions for those who remain designated for continued law of war detention, including possible Article III, military commission, or foreign prosecutions;</p><p>4.&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0;&#xa0; Working with the Congress to establish a location in the United States to securely hold detainees whom we cannot at this time transfer to foreign countries or who are subject to military commission proceedings.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Ahead of Obama's announcement, the Pentagon sent assessment teams to facilities including a high-security federal prison in Florence, Colorado, and a military jail at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in order to determine if the facilities were capable of housing high-profile inmates.</span></p><p>The White House&#xa0;plan to close the US prison in Guantanamo Bay references 13 potential sites for detainees to be transferred to US soil but does not endorse a specific facility.</p><h3><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">And here's the full plan:</span></h3><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div><p style=" margin: 12px auto 6px auto;
