It's a parable of what the relentless pursuit of money and power might do to a group of people. It's also a story about the opioid epidemic, centered on karmic retribution against the family dynasty behind the fictional Fortunato Pharmaceutical company. But it's also an intricate web of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/fall-of-the-house-of-usher-netflix-details-poe-references-easter-eggs-2023-10">Edgar Allan Poe references</a>, from the character names, to the nature of their deaths.Flanagan doesn't directly adapt Poe's work here, but he borrows widely from it and puts his own twist on things. One of his most clever references is the character Verna, played by Carla Gugino. Roderick sees her, looking down at him and wearing a raven mask, at the joint funeral for Victorine (T'Nia Miller), Tammy (Samantha Sloyan), and Frederick (Henry Thomas), the last of his six children to die gruesome deaths. Throughout all eight episodes, she haunts Roderick, Madeline, and Roderick's children in the lead-ups to their deaths.It's not just Verna's raven mask in that opening scene — raven imagery is a recurring theme throughout the series. There's a raven statue inside Verna's bar, where a younger Madeline and Roderick first encountered her on December 31, 1979 and made a deal for vast wealth and power in their lifetimes in exchange for the "deferred payment" of their bloodline being wiped out right before the two of them die. Between that and all the raven imagery it'd be easy enough to assume that Verna is a raven. Verna says as much to Madeline in their confrontation in the old Usher house in episode seven, "The Pit and the Pendulum," when Madeline tries to convince Verna to change the terms of the deal:While Verna clearly isn't an ordinary human, it's not as clear what supernatural entity she is. She clearly has supernatural powers: she revives Roderick when he overdoses on Ligodone; she resurrects herself when Madeline snaps her neck and when Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) drugs her and wraps her in plastic; she dissipates into smoke. She can even seemingly control minds, like when she tells the innocent waitstaff to leave the orgy Prospero (Sauriyan Sapkota) organized before toxic chemicals rain down on half-naked partygoers.She has the ability to see the future, telling Lenore (Kyliegh Curran) what will become of her mother, Morella (Crystal Balint), after Lenore's death. She can also glimpse alternate realities, informing Madeline that Roderick would have been a poet and telling Frederick that he would have been a dentist in "the other life" (presumably the reality that would've taken shape had Roderick and Madeline not made their deal with Verna back in 1980).But she doesn't seem to be a witch, or merely a shape-shifter.Much of what Verna says in conversation with the Ushers indicates that she's an ancient creature. She talks about how in the "ancient world" the deal she makes with Madeline and Roderick — a conversation she says is taking place "outside of time and space" — would be sealed with blood or spit. In the present day, she reminisces about "when you adorable little things" — early humans — "started building cities."Verna also calls Madeline one of her "favorites," indicating she's made deals with — and later wrought vengeance on — other power-hungry humans time and time again. That's also hinted at in the photographs that Arthur Pym digs up of an unaging Verna throughout the decades cavorting with prominent, wealthy, controversial figures like Donald Trump, John D. Rockefeller, and Mark Zuckerberg.Verna is something much more profound than a witch, a shape-shifter, or a bird.<h2>Is Verna the devil? Not quite</h2><div type="image" title="Carla Gugino as Verna in episode 102 of The Fall of the House of Usher" height="2400" width="3200" msid="104662230" hostid="261" sizebytes="238046"></div>In cast quotes provided by Netflix, Gugino described Verna as "the executor of fate or the executor of karma." Importantly, Verna isn't an indiscriminate killer or monster who attacks people just for the fun of it. According to Gugino, Verna isn't the devil, and isn't even necessarily a villain at all."Poe never really believed in God and the devil per se. She's not even evil," Gugino told Netflix's publication Tudum.Verna's actions, and her various monologues to the Ushers immediately before they each die, also underscore that she's only targeting people in accordance with what she "must" do. She introduces herself to Roderick's youngest son, Prospero, at his masquerade party/orgy as "consequence."In the deal she makes with Madeline and Roderick in the early hours of January 1, 1980, she clearly lays out the terms, and they accept them. There's no trickery or villainy involved. And Verna, to her credit, expresses deep remorse that she must kill Lenore, the only innocent member of the Usher family, and grants the teenager a painless death.In the end, Verna is neutral — she's just karmic retribution made flesh, coming to collect when the bill is due.

The new Verna competes with the likes of Honda City, Skoda Slavia, Volkswagen Virtus and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in the domestic market. The 1.5-litre trims of the 6th generation Verna have priced between Rs 10.89 lakh and Rs 16.19 lakh while the 1.5-litre turbo petrol variants, which come with enhanced power, are priced between Rs 14.83 lakh and Rs 17.37 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). As per the company, the model delivers fuel efficiency ranging between 18.6 to 20.6 km per litre, depending upon the engine options. Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO <keyword id="12755813" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="unsoo-kim" source="Orion">Unsoo Kim</keyword> said Verna has been one of the company's most iconic models globally. He noted the company has sold 4.65 lakh units of the sedan in the domestic market and also exported around 4.5 lakh units of the model till date. Kim said the new Verna would also be exported. Hyundai first launched the Verna brand in India in 2006. The automaker said the new Verna comes with 30 standard safety features including six airbags, 17 Level 2 - ADAS features and over 65 connected car features. In an interaction with PTI, Hyundai Motor India Chief Operating Officer Tarun <keyword id="196154" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="garg" source="Orion">Garg</keyword> said the company aims to sell close to 40,000 units of the sedan this year, doubling volumes from 2022. The country's second-largest carmaker sold around 19,000 Verna units last year. "We believe that with a product like Verna, we have a winner in hand. It is now larger as compared with the outgoing model, comes with advanced technology like level II ADAS system and other connected features," Garg said. He noted that the company has already received close to 8,000 bookings for the model so far. The overall booking backlog of the company stood at 1.15 units. Garg noted that the overall sedan segment volumes grew to around 4.12 lakh units last year from 2.96 units in 2021. Similarly, the mid-size sedan segment sales grew to around 1.10 lakh units last year from around 82,000 units in 2021. He said the sedan segment is witnessing growth in sales as new models are being launched, giving an option to buyers who seek comfort and performance in their daily commute. "Globally, there has been a trend towards the SUV body style. India has also witnessed the same. Despite a strong pull towards the SUVs, a latent demand still remains for sedans and that is why we have seen volumes grow in the segment," he stated. The sedan segment accounted for 10.8 per cent of the overall passenger vehicle segment last year, an increase from around 9.5 per cent in 2021, Garg said. Hyundai has launched the new Verna with petrol powertrains only while doing away with the 1.5 litre diesel engine. "We have seen demand for the diesel trims come down in this segment. It is shifting to the SUV segment, where diesel remains strong," Garg said. When asked about the chip shortage, Garg said the situation is improving but not completely over. "We do not see an issue with production and with the GM plant coming into the picture we will be better placed," he noted. Earlier this month Hyundai said it has initiated a process to acquire General Motors India's Talegaon-based manufacturing plant. On the market scenario, Garg noted that India is better placed when compared with other markets globally, many of which were facing economic issues. He, however, noted that high-interest rates and the negative impact from global markets could have some impact on the Indian market as well. Diminishing pent-up demand is another challenge so a strong single-digit growth for the passenger vehicle industry this year is going to be a good sign. Garg noted that the passenger vehicle industry witnessed over 20 per cent sales growth over a low base of 2021 and to expect a similar kind of growth this year as well is not practical. (Even moments before her death in episode eight, Madeline holds her stance that she and Roderick are not to blame and insists they "stand tall.")While the Ushers are something of a proxy for the Sacklers, the show cleverly weaves in the idea that Verna, a symbolic figure who acts as "the executor of fate or the executor of karma," has made similar deals for wealth and power with other real people throughout history. In episode six, "Goldbug," the Usher family lawyer Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill), who has zeroed in on Verna as a person of interest in the deaths of Roderick's children, presents to Madeline and Roderick the many photos of Verna he found on the internet. New Delhi, Mar 9 () Hyundai Motor India on Monday said the updated version of its mid-sized sedan Verna will come with BS-VI compliant 1 litre turbo petrol engine mated with seven speed dual clutch transmission.The model would also come with new BS-VI compliant 1.5 litre petrol and diesel powertrains with manual as well as automatic transmissions, the company said in a statement.The updated model would come with several first-in-segment features such as the digital cluster, front ventilated seats, smart trunk, emergency stop signal, wireless charger among others. Hyundai to drive in updated Verna with 1 litre turbo petrol engine

India's leading car manufacturer, <keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> is bullish about the new Maruti Ciaz - its latest mid-sized sedan for the country. Maruti had unveiled the concept version of the Ciaz earlier this year at the 2014 <keyword id="73154" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Auto-Expo">Auto Expo</keyword> and as these first undisguised pictures suggest the production version of the Maruti <keyword id="6911" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="suzuki">Suzuki</keyword> Ciaz looks like a promising sedan.
 The company has been struggling to have a successful run with its sedan models above the <keyword id="484565" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Dzire">Maruti DZire</keyword>, while arch rival <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> has hit the sweet spot with Indian car buyers with its sedans like the Hyundai Verna and Hyundai Elantra. But, this time around Maruti Suzuki is taking no chances as the Ciaz appears to have most things working in its favour as of now.

	Recently, a bunch of production ready Maruti Suzuki Ciaz were caught resting their heels in the company's Manesar manufacturing facility in Haryana. The company is working on a war footing to meet the scheduled launch of the Ciaz by second half of September 2014.
 Design wise the new Maruti Suzuki Ciaz strikes a good balance between the last generation SX4 and the Kizashi luxury sedan. The four slat chrome grille features a large Suzuki logo, while the headlight design is very distinct in the segment and is expected to feature projector lamps as standard fitment. The multi-layered bootlid design and shape of the taillight makes the Ciaz resemble the new <keyword id="31353" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-city">Honda City</keyword>'s rear end quite a bit.

	The interiors are inspired by the more premium Maruti Kizashi and would feature a two-tone dashboard with integrated entertainment system, steering wheel mounted audio controls, electric OVRMs and AC vents even for rear seat passengers among others.

	Optional features could include 5-inch display for the infotainment system, reverse parking camera, ABS, 16-inch alloy wheels, climate control air-conditioning, additional airbags and push button start to name a few.

As disruptive companies like Netflix and YouTube have spurred a cord-cutting revolution, cable and satellite companies have fought back with burgeoning digital TV (vMVPD) packages that aim to retain customers by shifting from one viewing platform to the next. Since the first quarter of 2017, traditional-TV losses and the transition to digital bundles have seemed to move in tandem. "The lumpiness is coming from the fact that the services are new. They are vying against each other and won't have the same sub growth every quarter."Verna said there's no question that the traditional pay-TV providers are having a very hard time, but he projects growth in linear OTT through 2022. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">BBCThe BBC's "Killing Eve."</div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>VMVPDs have been seen as a bright spot for the declining pay-TV industry.</li><li>The reported subscriber numbers are suspected to be smaller and less reliable than previously thought, though.</li><li>The figures are volatile because customers subscribe on a seasonal basis and signing up for free promotional packages, at a loss to distributors.</li></ul>As viewers shift from traditional TV in favor of streaming services, traditional and new TV providers, like AT&amp;T and Hulu, have developed virtual multichannel video programming distributor, or vMVPD, packages.But nearly four years after Dish launched the first digital TV service with Sling TV, the still-tiny paying subscriber base of vMVPDs - about 7 million for the top six companies, based on their reported data - is even smaller and less reliable than reported, according to some analysts.Companies report vMVPD subscriber figures selectively, and Hulu, YouTube TV, and Sony PlayStation Vue, three of the top five largest vMVPDs by subscribers, don't regularly report them, eMarketer analyst Paul Verna told Business Insider."My rule of thumb is that if they're not telling you the numbers, it means they're probably not great or there's not a lot of growth," Verna said.VMVPDs often offer their services for free or at steep discounts but don't say how many of their subscribers are getting it for free. Giving away the service for free also threatens their long-term stability. AT&amp;T for one lost about 17% of its DirecTV Now subscribers when it eliminated promotions. There's no way to know for certain how much vMVPD subscribers fluctuate between months, since companies don't publicly share this data, but Dan Rayburn, a media analyst at Frost &amp; Sullivan, estimates subscriber figures oscillate 20% a month. VMVPDs threaten traditional TV distributors by giving viewers a way to cut the cord. At the same time, distributors like Dish and AT&amp;T's DirecTV have launched vMVPDs to retain cord-cutters. The uneven vMVPD subscriber numbers call into question the ability for vMVPDs to either be a boon for disrupters or save cable and satellite TV.Rayburn doesn't think live streaming services will be the death of linear pay TV."I remember when YouTube TV came out, people predicted it's going to 10 million subs in a year," Rayburn said, citing private research he's seen as an analyst on Wall Street. "It doesn't even have a million."Below are the most recently reported subscriber figures for the top six vMVPDs, according to an analysis from eMarketer, using figures publicly reported by the companies. People might sign up to watch college basketball during March Madness, then cancel, Rayburn said. Rayburn said Hulu management has told him that its subscribers change plans often, which is why they don't share subscriber figures every quarter. The second largest car maker in India wants one per cent growth in its market share each year with its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=car+launch">car launches</a>. 
 "In the last two years we have launched seven models. We plan to launch 2-3 new models, including full model changes, every year continuously till 2020," said <keyword id="108829" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Motor-India">Hyundai Motor India</keyword> MD &amp; CEO BS Seo while inaugurating first dealership in Leh. 
 
Presently, Hyundai Motor India has more than 16% market share in the overall passenger vehicle segment with its models like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=i20">i20</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=creta">Creta</a>. 
 
It is also developing models like a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MPV">Multi Purpose Vehicle</a> (MPV), a small <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=SUV">SUV</a> and full model changes for its sedans Elantra and Verna to catch the Indian market. 
Hyundai is going to face competition as Suzuki also plans to roll out 15 new models by 2020.

The automaker also announced that it has decided for voluntary participation in the recently introduced Bharat NCAP with 3 models to begin with, and more models to follow. Under the Bharat NCAP programme, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their vehicles tested as per the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Based on the performance of the car in the tests, the vehicle will be awarded star ratings on a scale of 0-5, for adult occupants (AOP) and child occupants (COP). Potential car customers can refer to these star ratings to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and accordingly make their purchase decision.
