In the interview, the entrepreneur warned that organisations pushing their workforce to unsustainable limits will not be able to keep up the pace. He also called for a shift in mindset and said that people are being put in a "very big pressure cooker." <h2>Zoho CEO on putting employees in pressure cooker </h2> <keyword id="21154651" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vembu" source="keywords">Vembu</keyword>, who has spent over two decades building Zoho into one of India’s leading tech companies, expressed deep concern over the increasing pressure faced by employees, particularly in large cities. He said that we are creating environments where workers are trapped in a ‘pressure cooker’, referring to the convergence of long working hours, grueling commutes, and the isolation many young professionals experience after migrating from smaller towns. "You already have loneliness, long-commutes, stressful work condition. So, you are throwing people into a very big pressure cooker, and very tragically, some people break, other people are broken," he told PTI. Reflecting on his own experience, Vembu stressed the importance of pacing oneself in order to sustain a long and productive career. “I have been working for 27-28 years, and I hope to work for another 28 if possible. But to do that, I cannot allow myself, or my employees, to burn out,” he explained. He argued that companies prioritising short-term gains at the expense of their workers’ health are doomed to falter in the long run. <h2>What's the solution?</h2>Vembu’s advocacy for a healthier work culture is grounded in his broader vision for corporate India. A long-time proponent of decentralising business operations, he believes that one solution to the high-stress environment is to diversify away from major urban centres. “We bring young people from small towns into big cities, and their first challenge is loneliness. Then, they face commutes that can stretch up to two hours each way, particularly in cities like Bengaluru. It’s no surprise that many feel overwhelmed,” he said. The Zoho chief pointed out that by expanding operations into smaller towns and rural areas, companies can alleviate some of these pressures, allowing employees to stay closer to their homes and communities. This approach, he believes, not only reduces stress but also fosters a more sustainable, human-centric model of growth. Beyond <keyword id="22447710" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="workplace-stress" source="keywords">workplace stress</keyword>, Vembu touched on the role of technology in shaping the future of business. He reiterated his call for tighter regulations on big tech companies, particularly in preventing the monopolisation of digital services. Drawing parallels between email, which is an open standard, and messaging services that are often locked within proprietary ecosystems, he urged the government to push for greater interoperability. “Messaging platforms should not operate in silos. We need standards that prevent monopolies and ensure a level playing field for all,” he remarked. Vembu also praised India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) initiatives, calling them a “shining success story” and a model for other nations. He highlighted how India has become a global leader in digital infrastructure, with initiatives such as the ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) and the health stack setting new standards for the world to follow.

Referring to the conversational AI platforms like ChatGPT and others, Vembu said that he has been saying internally for the past 4-5 years that "ChatGPT, GPT4, and other AI being created today will first affect the jobs of many programmers". Although there are positive uses of AI, he believes the complexity and depth of this technology are a concern. Vembu recently tweeted from his account, mentioning the economic consequences AI can bring. "I won't focus on the technology itself but on the economic consequences. First of all, if AI was to eliminate all jobs, it means AI is able to produce all the goods and services we need without human labour," he posted. "Where will the jobs come from? In a world where AI made goods and services free, the better question is 'what will humans do?," he noted during a press interaction here. Referring to a global initiative taken by tech billionaire Elon Musk and other top entrepreneurs and researchers against stopping AI experiments for at least six months, the Zoho CEO said he and two other industry leaders had also written an open letter to the central government, calling for an AI policy in the country. Vembu’s recent statement just adds to the debate that kids should not be pushed into coding at such an early stage. Over the last couple of years, with the advent of startups like Whitehat Jr, an increasing number of parents are pushing kids to learn how to code. The recent disruptions led by new technology has added to the demand for an early start in learning. However, there are many who believe this fear of missing out may be unwarranted. Vembu seems to be one of them. He is an influential voice in the technology space ⁠— also member of the National Security Advisory Board led by Ajit Doval ⁠— who founded Zoho Corp when he was about 28 years old. The company is currently in its 25th year of operations and has never raised money from investors despite being profitable. Zoho currently has over 50 apps in nearly every major business category, including sales, marketing, customer support, accounting and back office operations. An Indian software icon says kids need not learn coding early

 Zoho Desk, which is the sixth product that the company has launched in 2016, uses customer data from past interactions and from other Zoho products, like Zoho CRM and <keyword id="3870877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="zoho-projects">Zoho Projects</keyword>, to organise tickets and intelligently present information to agents so that they can better understand a customer's problem and resolve it efficiently. 
 
It thus helps companies deliver the right solution at the right time. Its clean user interface packs innovations like Work Modes that help agents send context-aware responses, the Headquarters dashboard that provides the visibility managers need to make better decisions, and the Team Feed to help the entire company participate in customer service. 
 
As is the case with every Zoho product, Zoho Desk is also available for free up to 10 users. Paid plans begin at Rs 720 per user per month for the Professional Edition and increase to Rs 1,500 per user per month for the Enterprise version. 
 
The company's 15 acre Tenkasi facility from where Zoho Desk was built started out with three engineers who had moved from Chennai five years ago, which has today blossomed into a modest-size office housing 150 employees. Vembu himself makes it a point to visit this office once every three months. "Investment in building the entire centre at Tenkasi stood at Rs 3,000 per sq feet, excluding land costs," he revealed. To accommodate more employees, the company is also expanding its facility, which is going to be three times bigger than the existing office. 
 
 
 
From the very beginning of this plan, Vembu was clear about one thing- he had to first build a durable product, regardless of how long it took him. Infact, it was this very decision that stopped him from making Zoho Desk public despite it being ready for a year. Instead, the company used those 12 months to test out the product themselves and launch it in the market once they were absolutely sure of it. 
 
That seemed to paid off wonderfully for Vembu, as Zoho Desk currently boasts of handling 50 million tickets for 20 million users. Vembu is of the hope that out of 150,000 organizations across the world that Zoho counts as its customers, atleast one-third of them will become Zoho Desk users, making it a force to reckon with while it takes on two large rivals- global major <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=zendesk&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Zendesk </a>and local product <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=freshdesk&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Freshdesk</a>. 
 
Naturally, the road till here was fraught with challenges as Vembu attempted to build everything from ground up, but that hardly deterred the man who is known for building a one of the most profitable global tech company without any external funding. 
 
"We would have definitely built it faster if we had chosen a city like Chennai, but from the onset we were clear that we wanted to build a world-class product from rural India using the talent that most often than not remains untapped," he explained. 
 
Combine that with Vembu's belief that rural talent shouldn't have to leave home to find opportunity and you get an insight into the mind of the man who has proved that ‘a determined and sincere group of people can build path-breaking products anywhere.’ 
 
Sticking to their guns, the company developed local talents through its own university, Zoho University, recruited engineers through campus placements, then trained and mentored them. 
 At a time when almost all companies are moving from the suburbs to the cities to make a name for themselves, Zoho is busy reversing that trend to prove that you don't really need to be in <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> to build a world-class product.

But India’s businesses, especially the smaller ones, have still not embraced a connected world. In a recent virtual event organised by Business Insider for small businesses -- <keyword id="4106334" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="msme-exchange">MSME Exchange</keyword> -- Sridhar Vembu, founder of software-as-a-startup (SaaS) firm Zoho shared a relevant example for businesses struggling to move digital. “For a community of singers who perform music in the temples of south India for several functions, singing in temples is their main source of income. They have now witnessed a major decline in [their] regular income. For us, clearly these people can organise online events, but the point is they don’t know how to. To perform music online, audio needs to be properly tuned with softwares and much more. Further, considering we do not know when normalcy will resume, these traditional job seekers need to learn digital processes,” said Vembu. According to a report by World Economic Forum -- Indian Cities in the Post Pandemic World, released on January 7, 2021 -- about 70% of India's gross domestic product (GDP) comes from its cities and around 25-30 people migrate to cities from rural areas every minute. The development model of India in the last 20-30 years has been very urban centric where one has to bring talent out of villages into cities. Vembu feels, in this process, we are overcrowding urban areas and leaving rurals empty which is not good. “So to bring some balance to this situation, more economic activity has to happen at the rural level, particularly high paying technology jobs have to be moved to rural areas. The idea is to create jobs for people who otherwise might have to shift to urban areas,” says Vembu. Jayesh Ranjan, the information technology (IT) secretary of Telangana, highlighted a survey that said 68% of India’s MSMEs did not have an email address five years back, which is very disheartening to hear. He feels that MSMEs can benefit from technology and it is only a matter of mindset holding them back. If unfortunate circumstances like a pandemic come up, dramatic changes can literally happen overnight. He cited an example of how the government and Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) literally converted thousands of kirana (mom and pop) stores into online stores overnight. “They created their website, inventory, payments getaways and so on,” said Ranjan. According to Ministry of Corporate Affairs filings, Ultraviolette has raised ₹112.5 crore (approximately $15 million) from TVS and Zoho Corporation. Its valuation is estimated to be $200 million as per Inc42. The company has not officially confirmed the financial details of this transaction. The company will use the latest Series C fund to launch its F77 high-performance electric motorcycle, which is currently in the final stages of testing. It expects to launch the electric vehicle (EV) in the first half of 2022. The Bengaluru-based startup had first showcased the electric motorcycle in November 2019 and it has received over 50,000 booking requests so far. ‘’What impressed me most about Ultraviolette is their approach towards building the EV experience in the country -- one that is focused on high performance, disruptive design and technology, and superior user experience, all built and developed right here in India. There is no doubt that the future of mobility is electric, and innovation has to be at the forefront of product disruption,” Zoho Corporation’s founder and chief executive (CEO) Sridhar Vembu said. Ultraviolette Automotive was founded in 2016 by Narayan Subramaniam and Niraj Rajmohan. It develops sustainable mobility and energy infrastructure. The company has raised over $20 million to date from marquee investors like Speciale Invests, GoFrugal’s Kumar Vembu. TVS had first invested in Ultraviolette back in 2017 and has been increasing its shareholding in the company since then. The report noted that these 500 employees have created more than 5,000 employment opportunities. Some of these companies include Hippo Video, SurveySparrow, Facilio founded by ex Zoho employees, Slintel founded by former Eightfold employees and Niki founded by former Innovaccer employees. Freshworks and Chargebee are also founded by former employees of Sridhar Vembu-led Zoho Corporation.
