With heavy rains continuing to pummel several parts of <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, vegetable prices have soared in almost all areas of the state.<br /><br />Market watchers told IANS that the prices will further go up in days to come as production has taken a hit in almost all the areas of the state.<br /><br />Tomatoes and shallots have become costlier in <keyword id="6373821" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="madurai" source="Orion">Madurai</keyword> and <keyword id="12864" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chennai" source="Orion">Chennai</keyword> <keyword id="6357102" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="koyambedu" source="Orion">Koyambedu</keyword> markets, the two prominent vegetable markets of the state. Tomato that cost Rs 100 per crate of 15 kg a week before is now being sold at more than Rs 250 per crate.<br /><br />Shallots is costing Rs 110 per kg in <keyword id="6373821" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="madurai" source="Orion">Madurai</keyword> and Koyamdedu markets while it was trading at Rs 90 a week ago. The high demand for these two products and short of these vegetables have led to soaring prices in the market.<br /><br />In the prominent vegetable markets of Madurai, Salem, Tiruchi, <keyword id="6361828" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="coimbatore" source="Orion">Coimbatore</keyword>, and <keyword id="6357102" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="koyambedu" source="Orion">Koyambedu</keyword> in <keyword id="12864" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chennai" source="Orion">Chennai</keyword>, the prices of vegetables have increased by 20 to 30 per cent as the rains have led to the vegetables being destroyed. Transportation is another issue faced by the farmers in the state.<br /><br />R. Anpusamy, a tomato wholesaler at Koyambedu market in Chennai told IANS, "The rising prices of vegetables is due to more demands and less production. The heavy rains in many parts of the state have led to less production of vegetables but the demand for these vegetables is high and hence the prices of these vegetables have increased. Government must intervene and reduce the prices and if not, it will be death bell to the vegetable traders."<br /><br />Krishnasamy, a trader at Koyambedu market said, "On Monday, there is a 40 per cent reduction in the arrival of vegetables in the market including tomatoes, shallots, brinjal, ladies finger, carrot, and onion. The shortage of supply is due to the heavy rains that are pounding most areas of <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> where cultivation is taking place."<br /><br />Another factor that is affecting the functioning of the Koyambedu market is the arrival of trucks from parts of the state. This, according to the vegetable vendors of Koyambedu has led to short supply of most of the vegetables and hence prices have shot up.<br /><br />Ahmad Masthan, a truck owner, told IANS said, "With most of the roads turning muddy and slippery and blocked, it is difficult for transporting vegetables from remote villages to the markets in cities, including Madurai and Chennai. When Jagannath Shelke received an outrageous electricity bill of ₹8,75,830 for the consumption of 55,519 units in April, he couldn't cope with the pressure and decided to end his life. The 40-year-old lived in a tiny 2-room tin shed in the <keyword id="698768" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatnagar">Bharatnagar</keyword> in <keyword id="6354237" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="aurangabad">Aurangabad</keyword>, a small city in the western Indian state of <keyword id="13126" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, with his family.<br /><br />According to the police, he left a suicide note claiming the bill was the reason he hung himself from the ceiling fan. An officer from the Garkheda police station told <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/aurangabad-vegetable-seller-ends-life-after-receiving-electricity-bill-for-865-lakh/article23837838.ece" data-type="tilCustomLink">The Hindu</a>, “The deceased was apparently under severe stress after getting a bill with such figures. He pinned a note to his body saying he was extremely distressed with the humongous electricity bill and hence was forced to take his own life. We are in the process of lodging a complaint.”<br /><br />The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (<keyword id="6360872" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="msedcl">MSEDCL</keyword>) released a statement saying the section engineer at its Garkheda station punched incorrect meter readings, as 61,178 KWH instead of 6,117.8 KWH. This lead to the generation of the inflated bill. The MSEDCL claims it has fired the billing clerk responsible for the error.<br /><br />Apparently, on receiving the bill, the distraught vegetable vendor approached the MSEDCL authorities but was ignored and asked to pay up. The victim’s family have now refused to take possession of the body and have asked for a case to be lodged against the electricity board. The police have registered a case of accidental death for now.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I visited Reading Terminal Market on a recent Friday afternoon to see how it's recovering from the pandemic.</li><li>The <keyword id="36219" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Philadelphia">Philadelphia</keyword> market is home to more than 80 small businesses and was bustling on the afternoon I went.</li><li>Vendors say business has been good and shoppers are returning, but there are supply shortages. </li></ul><p>I took a trip to Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - a bustling market full of stalls selling everything from Amish Country produce to sushi <strong>-</strong> to see how businesses have been doing now that vaccines are available and restrictions have been more relaxed.</p><p>On a Friday afternoon, there were many people shopping and enjoying the plethora of foods that the market has to offer. Prior to the pandemic, the market would have been far more crowded on a Friday afternoon than it was when I visited. Still, the market was bustling, and it was clear that things were slowly returning to normal. </p><h2>The Reading Terminal Market has been open since 1893 and is home to more than 80 small businesses. </h2><div type="image" title="Philadelphia Reading Terminal Market" height="1442" width="2048" msid="84987990" hostid="261"></div><p>Reading Terminal is the oldest and largest public market in the United States and is similar to markets in other American cities like Portland and Charleston. It's housed in a former historic train shed.</p><p>During my afternoon exploring the market, I spoke to three workers who say business has been much better since last year, but there's another common theme - supply shortages. </p><h2>At Luhv Vegan Deli, business is ramping up, but certain supplies are hard to come by</h2><div type="image" title="Luhv Vegan Deli" height="1536" width="2048" msid="84987993" hostid="261"></div><p>At Luhv Vegan Deli, which has been serving its vegan sandwiches in the terminal Avenue B since 2018, employees said business was returning to normal, but things like gloves and vegan meats and cheeses are sometimes in short supply. </p><p>"It was just really slow until January-February, but then it started to pick up and be a little bit more [busy] like this on a Saturday here and there," cashier Jordan Hartsfield said. "We had a shortage of gloves recently, like a couple weeks ago, that happen a lot during the pandemic. A shortage of vegan provolone, the vegan bacon that we had, and the gloves are a lot more expensive than they were pre-pandemic for obvious reasons." </p><p>During the depths of the pandemic, s<a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-philadelphia-marke/we-were-wiped-out-merchants-in-historic-philadelphia-market-grapple-with-pandemic-idUSKBN2AM11X">ome retailers in the market struggled to stay open and in business. </a> In February, the market's leadership organized a GoFundMe drive and raised more than $500,000 to support vendors during the slowdown. Employees I spoke to said business was almost back to normal. </p><p>"Business for us has been going really well," Lamirah Coleman, a manager at Sweet T's Bakery, told Insider. "Since things are opening back up, more people are coming out, we're meeting a lot of new customers so we're really really happy about that." </p><h2>I treated myself to one of Sweet T's famous lemonades and a whoopie pie to go with my meal </h2><div type="image" title="Sweet T's Bakery" height="1536" width="2048" msid="84987997" hostid="261"></div><p>"The only shortage that we have lately is the coin shortage," Coleman added. The US Federal Reserve says there's not a coin shortage but a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-says-no-coin-shortage-just-circulation-problem-2021-6">problem with the circulation of coins</a>. </p><h2>Other merchants have been forced to raise prices amid inflation </h2><div type="image" title="Nanee's Kitchen" height="980" width="2048" msid="84987998" hostid="261"></div><p>An employee at Nanee's Kitchen, which sells Indian/Pakistani cuisine, said they've had to raise menu prices by $1 because of inflated poultry and vegetable prices. </p><p>"A couple of times there were no forks or spoons from the restaurant depots that we get them from," Sam Reddy, an employee at Nanee's Kitchen said. "And the prices went up, especially on meat and vegetables so my boss increased the prices on the menu by a dollar more for every platter, not too much, just a dollar more but they saw the prices went up at the grocery stores."</p><h2>There's still loads of fresh produce in the market, which can often be a rare find in cities </h2><h2><div type="image" title="Reading Terminal Market" height="1536" width="2048" msid="84987999" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>Having access to fresh fruits and vegetables is vital to maintaining a healthy diet, but that can be nearly impossible in certain parts of Philadelphia. New Delhi, Mar 30 () Mother Dairy on Monday supplied around 250 tonnes of fruits and vegetables to its retail stores 'Safal' across Delhi-NCR to meet local demand, which has now stabilised with no panic-buying from customers. <p> Last week, Mother Dairy had doubled its supply of fruits and vegetables in the Delhi-NCR at over 300 tonnes per day, as customers began panic-buying of household essentials after announcement of the 21-day nationwide lockdown. </p><p> Mother Dairy, which is a major milk supplier in the national capital region with sales of over 30 lakh litres per day, has started home delivery for senior citizens in few localities of Delhi like Moti Bagh, Defence Colony and Greater Kailash, said Pradipta Sahoo, business head of Safal.</p><p> "We have supplied around 250 tonnes of fruits and vegetables today (Monday). The supply has come down from over 300 tonnes last week as panic-buying has stopped but still it is more than normal," he told . </p><p> Moreover, the local vendors have also now got access to sell in colonies, Sahoo said. </p><p> The rates have also come down of all vegetables including potatoes, tomatoes and cauliflowers, he said.</p><p> Before the lockdown, Mother Dairy used to supply 160-180 tonnes of fruits and vegetables per day in Delhi-NCR.</p><p> Sahoo said the Mother Dairy could increase the capacity up to 400 tonnes per day.</p><p> "We are procuring 90 per cent of our supply from farmers. The remaining 10 per cent comes from local wholesale markets such as Azadpur," he said. </p><p> Mother Dairy is sourcing fruits and vegetables from Delhi and neighbouring states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. </p><p> It is procuring onion from Maharashtra and potatoes from Agra in Uttar Pradesh.</p><p> Mother Dairy has enough stock of apples which it has stored in cold chain facility, he noted.</p><p> The company has more than 300 Safal stores across the national capital region.</p> Sahoo said the company is enforcing safe distancing at its stores to check spread of coronavirus. New Delhi, Apr 30 () Mother Dairy on Thursday said prices of vegetables and fruits are stable in the national capital while there is sufficient availability to meet the local demand.<p> On Thursday, it supplied about 250 tonnes of fresh fruits and vegetables to its over 300 retail stores Safal in the Delhi-NCR market.</p><p> Mother Dairy is a leading supplier of milk in the Delhi-NCR market with demand of over 30 lakh litre per day.</p><p> "We are supplying around 250-260 tonnes of fruits and vegetables per day in Delhi-NCR. We are purchasing bulk of the items directly from farmers and small quantities from local wholesale mandis," said Pradipta Sahoo, business head, Safal.</p><p> Asked about prices, he said rates are more or less stable, with minor fluctuations on a daily basis.</p><p> "We are selling onions, potatoes and tomatoes in a price range of Rs 20-30 per kg," he told .</p><p> Safal is selling potato at Rs 30 per kg, onion at Rs 20, tomato 26-28 per kg and cucumber Rs 20 per kg.</p><p> Bottle gourd is being sold at Rs 24, cabbage Rs 28, palak Rs 29, tinda Rs 49 and sponge gourd Rs 49. Water melon is available at nearly Rs 20 per kg.</p><p> After the imposition of lockdown from March 25, Mother Dairy has doubled its supply to more than 300 tonne per day as people were engaged in panic-buying but now the demand has come down to around 250 tonnes a day.</p><p> The vegetable prices quoted by local vendors are generally higher than the Mother Dairy and the rates also vary depending on the quality and the location.</p><p> Manoj, a local vendor at Paschim Vihar here, is selling onions at Rs 20 per kg, while rates of potatoes and tomatoes are Rs 30 per kg.</p><p> In green vegetables, cauliflower is available at Rs 40, while lady finger, french beans and pointed gourd are available at Rs 70-80 per kg.</p> Brinjal, bitter gourd and capsicum are being sold at Rs 50-60 per kg.
