He wanted to know how effective washing actually was, so for this year's 3M Young Scientist Challenge, he set out to invent a device to answer that question.He spent about 11 months researching and developing what ultimately became a handheld device, called Pestiscand. If the scanner detects the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/strawberries-greens-tainted-by-pesticides-despite-washing-report-2022-4">presence of pesticides</a>, you should give the fruit or vegetable another rinse."It can often take multiple rounds of washing to significantly reduce the quantity of pesticide residues from produce," he said.The device won him the $25,000 grand prize at this year's 3M Young Scientist Challenge, beating out nine other competitors. Gilles Benoit, a judge for the challenge, told BI over email that part of what set his project apart was its potential to help improve everyday health and safety."Diet is really one of the main roots of exposures to pesticides," Alexis Temkin, a senior toxicologist with the Environmental Working Group who wasn't involved with the competition, told BI. He then divided the fruits into four batches.The first three batches he sprayed with one of three common pesticides — azoxystrobin, imidacloprid, or cypermethrin — and the fourth batch he washed thoroughly for his pesticide-free control.While testing the device, he scanned each piece of produce multiple times in different locations, taking over 800 samples. Pestiscand can accurately identify both the presence of pesticides and which pesticide is present 93% of the time, he said.The device is still in its preliminary stages. Eventually, Subash hopes to develop a product that can identify the many hundreds of potential pesticides and estimate how much pesticide is left after an initial wash to determine if another rinse is necessary.For example, strawberries have grooves and crevices that make it "easier for biological and chemical contaminants to kind of stay on those for longer and it's harder to wash them off," said Danya de Montagnac, a pesticide research fellow at EWG.<h2 id="3daba9a4-69ba-495d-9c04-5da1059c1653">How to reduce your exposure to pesticides</h2><div type="image" title="container of strawberries being places under a running faucet" height="1414" width="2121" msid="114982150" hostid="261" sizebytes="139882"></div>Even though washing produce may not remove all pesticides, it's one of the best ways to reduce your exposure, de Montagnac said. She recommends washing for 15 to 60 seconds depending on the produce — for produce that typically contains a lot of pesticides, wash longer.Another option is to buy organic, particularly for items that contain high pesticide levels like grapes, kale, peaches, pears, and nectarines, according to the EWG.Organic produce still contains pesticides, but they're natural. It's the synthetic pesticides on conventional produce associated with adverse health effects, Temkin said.Just because <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/foods-with-most-least-pesticides-not-important-2017-3">produce contains pesticides</a> doesn't mean you should avoid it altogether."The majority of the population already is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eating-30-plants-a-week-gut-health-easier-2024-6">not eating enough fruits and vegetables</a>. The uneven distribution of monsoon rainfall and the potential for excess rainfall in the coming months pose additional risks to food prices. RajSinha, Chief Economist at CareEdge, noted, "Despite the moderation in the inflation of the food and beverage basket when compared to last year, the sequential momentum remains strong, with a 2.5 per cent M-o-M increase in prices, higher than an average sequential grow." Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist at CRISIL, highlighted the impact of the high-base effect, stating, While the high-base effect -- along with sequential monthly movements -- was supportive of food inflation, it had an adverse bearing on core inflation. The big worry now is food prices continue to be elevated with the on-month rise slightly higher than usual for July. "The good part is monsoon and sowing have been progressing well and the expectation is that the arrival of fresh supplies in the market should over the next few months curb the food price rise. Overall, though, we expect inflation to ease and average 4.5 per cent this fiscal mostly due to softer food prices. This decline in CPI marks the first time in half a decade that CPI inflation has dipped below the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) target of 4 per cent, a feat largely attributed to a steep fall in vegetable prices. Core CPI rose from 3.12 per cent in June to 3.30 per cent in July, driven primarily by an increase in mobile tariffs. Notably, the transport and communication segment saw inflation rise sharply from 0.97 per cent in June to 2.48 per cent in July, indicating sector-specific pressures. Despite this, concerns persist over the uneven distribution of monsoon rainfall, particularly in key foodgrain-producing states experiencing deficient precipitation. Looking ahead, inflationary pressures may persist, potentially exceeding the RBI's forecast of 4.5 per cent for FY25. The domestic growth momentum remains robust, with GDP expected to surpass 7 per cent in Q1 FY25. However, geopolitical uncertainties continue to pose risks to the growth outlook. The RBI, maintaining a tight liquidity stance to control inflation, has deferred potential rate cuts to December 2024 or February 2025. State-wise analysis reveals that the majority of states recorded CPI inflation rates below the national average, with only six out of 22 states experiencing higher-than-average inflation. Despite this, significant rural-urban inflation differentials were observed, with most states seeing higher inflation in rural areas compared to urban counterparts. Only four states reported higher urban inflation. Historically, when the U.S. Federal Reserve adjusts its interest rates, global capital flows are impacted, prompting central banks in emerging markets to follow suit. However, while the Fed's recent rate hike cycle (2022-2023) saw a synchronized global response, the current rate-cutting phase is proving to be less coordinated. Central banks in countries like China, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, the UK, Canada, and the European Central Bank have already begun reducing rates, while the Fed is expected to initiate cuts in September 2024. India's Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew by 4.2 per cent in June 2024, down from a revised 6.2 per cent in May. The mining sector led the growth with a 10.3 per cent increase, followed by electricity at 8.6 per cent and manufacturing at 2.6 per cent. For the April-June 2024 period, industrial growth stood at 5.2 per cent, compared to 4.7 per cent in the same period the previous year. This was the fourth consecutive month when <keyword id="19895000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="keywords">inflation</keyword> witnessed an upward journey. The wholesale price index (<keyword id="19936844" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="WPI" source="keywords">WPI</keyword>) based inflation was 2.61% in May. It was (-) 4.18% in June 2023. Wholesale inflation had touched a high of 3.85% in February 2023."Positive rate of inflation in June, 2024 is primarily due to increase in prices of food articles, manufacture of food products, crude petroleum &amp; natural gas, mineral oils, other manufacturing etc," the Ministry of Commerce &amp; Industry said in a statement on Monday. As per the data, inflation in food articles rose 10.87% cent in June, as against 9.82% in May. Inflation in vegetables was 38.76% during June, up from 32.42% in May. Onion inflation was at 93.35%, while potato was 66.37% in the month under review. Pulses inflation rose 21.64% in June. During the month, inflation in other food items like fruits stood at 10.14%, cereals at 9.27%, and milk at 3.37%. The up move in the WPI inflation in June 2024 was broad-based, driven by all the major segments except fuel and power, ICRA Chief Economist Aditi Nayar said. Looking ahead, she said, the headline WPI inflation is expected to dip to about 2% in July 2024, driven by a favourable base, as well as some cooling in global commodity prices. With regard to oil prices, she said, the average price of the Indian basket of crude oil has been quite volatile in July 2024 so far, on the back of supply-demand mismatches, witnessing a month-on-month rise (USD 86.6/bbl up to July 11). Higher crude oil prices might exert an upward pressure to the headline WPI inflation in the ongoing month, she added. In the fuel and power basket, inflation stood at 1.03%, marginally lower than 1.35% in May. However, price rise in crude petroleum &amp; natural gas was in double digit at 12.55%during the month. In manufactured products, inflation was at 1.43% in June, higher than 0.78% in May. The rise in June WPI was in line with the <keyword id="19999652" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-inflation" source="keywords">retail inflation</keyword> data for the month. Retail inflation rose to a four-month high of 5.1% in June, data released last week showed.
