Rahmon's revenue has been verified with documentation by Insider. This essay has been edited for length and clarity.I started my career in 2011 as a freelance graphic designer in Syria, where I grew up. In 2012, I started selling templates on GraphicRiver — a marketplace where you can sell digital templates, vectors, and Adobe add-ons — to diversify my income.<h2>My income as a freelancer meant I could move to Romania </h2>I moved to Romania in 2014 because of the constant war in Syria. My freelance earnings and professional portfolio were sufficient for the refugee visa.In Romania, I pivoted my freelancing efforts from creating printable graphics to designing templates for clients' branding, web design, and 3D design. A printable graphic, such as a logo or illustration, is a static visual asset. It's less appealing to buyers because they can use it only once and there's a risk other projects use the same graphics. After two years in template designing, I decided to focus on sports templates as my niche. I was inspired by the importance of visual identity to American sports teams.I posted a sports template on GraphicRiver and got an overwhelming response. My $15 <a href="https://graphicriver.net/item/realistic-football-helmet-mockup/8625844?ref=saltshaker911" target="_blank" rel="noopener">design</a> has 1,600 sales on the platform, which puts me in the top 20 sellers. <h2>I built a website and focused on sports graphics</h2>I always considered showcasing my work in one place, and my sports-template sales gave me the push. I paid a professional website developer $2,000 of my savings to make a custom WooCommerce site. The <a href="https://sportstemplates.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website went live</a> in February 2016. I sold Photoshop templates and mock-ups for the sports industry, such as for helmets, sports jerseys, and tickets. Within the first month, I stopped working as a freelancer and gradually pulled away from my long-term clients to focus on marketing my digital product.I started Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook accounts, all linked to my website, and shared demos of how people could use my templates. These posts attracted some early sales.Additionally, I reached out to YouTube influencers in the design and sports space who had about 50,000 subscribers. I paid them $50 to $100 to promote my work in a video. This helped me gain credibility and trust in the industry. In 2017, I was approached by the creative director of ESPN, who found me through a Google search. He asked for a custom template.ESPN paid me $2,500 for the template. I put a lot of effort into the template, and while the payment didn't cover the time I put in, it was worth it for the credibility of having ESPN as a client.After I worked with ESPN, the Minnesota Timberwolves used one of my templates on their website during the 2017-18 NBA season to <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20181215230828/https://www.nba.com/timberwolves/newthreads" target="_blank" rel="noopener">display their new jerseys</a>. They bought the template for $60 off my website.I advertised that I'd worked with these big names on my website, which helped me attract other clients.The Phoenix Suns used my "Slam dunk basketball uniform template" to reveal their new <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CTAUqValefA/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">uniforms</a>. The Los Angeles Kings used my hockey jersey template for content and user engagement on <a href="https://twitter.com/LAKings/status/1339291716734619651?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter</a>. I was making five times as much from my template business as I was as a freelancer and it was less stressful. <h2>TikTok helped skyrocket my business and increase my revenue</h2>I began experimenting with TikTok in 2020 to scale my business amid the pandemic. I made a "What if NBA logos were minimalist" series to show off my templates in use. I converted NBA logos into minimalist designs and put them on my templates to show how my reimagined logo would look on a fan T-shirt or a jersey. These videos went viral, with some <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@sportstemplates/video/6968501596489518341?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7142583965814703621" target="_blank" rel="noopener">receiving over 4 million views</a>.When a video went viral, I would notice my website revenue increase between 20% and 40% in the days after. The NBA teams started engaging with this content on TikTok. I got about 20,000 to 30,000 followers within two months of being on TikTok. I also reused the content to grow my followers on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. I now have nearly 200,000 followers across Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. <h2>After establishing a successful online presence, I was making between $10,000 and $15,000 monthly</h2>It was enough to hire a small team to help diversify my product offerings. We now make a lot of animated graphics to compensate for social media moving into video formats. My team grew from one designer to five working remotely. Now my work involves checking my website daily for updates, conducting extensive research, analyzing market trends, and informing people about what's new and valuable. I spend two to four hours on daily updates and eight to 10 hours when releasing new template designs. I was successful because I found a niche that combined my love of sports and graphic-design skills. I could leverage my personal interest to make a great product.In all my years of struggling to build this business, I've learned the importance of having a personal presence on the internet, especially as a graphic designer. Investing in a professional online presence was also crucial. A well-designed website showcased my work and lent credibility to my business, helping attract clients and establish trust. It's also very important to keep up with industry trends and customer needs and be prepared to adapt your offerings. I adapted to artificial-intelligence trends and designed a <a href="https://logodiffusion.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">startup</a> that could create sports logos in seconds from text prompts.

Polly Pockets are compact <keyword id="25284" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="toys">toys</keyword> that come in many shapes. They were intended to be collectibles in the '90s. This particular set is called <keyword id="770982" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fast-food-restaurant">Fast Food Restaurant</keyword>, and it looks like a miniature diner. This was unfortunately discontinued in the late '90s.I start by cleaning the entire compact to remove any dirt that has built up over the years. I'm just using a multipurpose cleaning agent, a paper towel, and a Q-tip. Then I buff out the scratches by using Novus. It comes in two steps, and you actually have to work backwards. So, here I'm starting with No. 2, and what this one does is it buffs out any of the fine scratches that you see on this compact. So, I am taking some product onto my jewelry-polishing cloth, and I am just rubbing it in circular motion on the compact itself. And I'm gonna keep doing this till the product is gone. But since I'm happy with how this looks, I'm now gonna take the No. 1 product, which is the final polishing product.I'm gonna spray it on the cloth, and I'm just gonna wipe down the entire compact with it.And what this does is it gives it a final shine and it also makes it a little bit dust resistant.So, for the logo, it is actually the most iconic part of a Polly Pocket compact from the '90s. What I've done here is I actually vectored the logo itself on Illustrator. I can fit it to whatever compact I'm restoring. And then I use a Cricut machine to cut it all out. And it's on a gold adhesive vinyl paper, which is basically a sticker, so I can just peel it off and stick it on the Polly Pocket logo.And the logo itself is what actually contributes to the higher price point when you're trying to buy a vintage Polly Pocket. The logo has definitely changed a lot since Polly has undergone a couple of reboots, but that classic gold Polly Pocket logo, with the oval outline and heart icon, is instantly recognizable.One of the biggest problems with the set are the characters.They're chipped. The paint has faded over time. So what I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna give them a fresh coat of acrylic paint and try to match their original colors as close as possible. For this particular character, her hair is pretty much completely chipped. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna take some dark brown acrylic paint and I'm just gonna completely paint over her entire hair to fill in those gaps. Polly Pockets were popular because it really was the first <keyword id="99664" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Toy">toy</keyword> of its kind. It's an entire world that you can fit in the palm of your hand and take with you wherever you go. For Polly herself, I also don't like how her face looks, so I'm just gonna draw a brand new face on her. And this is the most difficult part because she's so small and I'm basically <keyword id="1197" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Painting">painting</keyword> with a needle here. So, my strategy here, for her mouth especially, is to paint a blob and then take away some of the paint using an X-Acto knife, so it's kind of like reverse painting.For the <keyword id="1833500" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="fairy">fairy</keyword> character, she originally comes with these wings that are made of some kind of cloth. And over time it did curl, it's folded over on itself, so I'm gonna make tiny wings out of polymer clay. Once I like the shape of the wings, I'm gonna bake the clay till it cures. And once it's cured, I'm adding some glitter so that it's extra sparkly. Then I glue it on the fairy with superglue, and now she has supercute wings.For the inside of the compact, it's actually in pretty good condition. I only see a couple small chips over here in this orange area. So I'm just taking the same acrylic paints that I've been using before, but I'm now taking the orange to match the color, and I'm doing the exact same thing I did with the character, where I'm just filling in the gaps. And I'm being very generous with the paint here because when acrylic paint dries, it dries very flat. So I'm actually taking quite a bit of paint to give it more volume.Lastly, I'm sealing all my restoration work on the characters with a glossy varnish. This protects the paint, makes the characters look shiny, and also tightens their little hinges. Keep in mind that restoring a Polly Pocket doesn't mean it will increase in value. For me, this is for my own personal enjoyment. I don't plan on reselling my collection, so I just do this for fun.

Brock,</a> a decorated Air Force lieutenant colonel from Texas, was recorded inside the building wearing a helmet and holding flex cuffs. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/18/us/politics/capitol-riot-militias.html">The New York Times reported</a> that Brock was a member of the Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters.<a href="https://www.insider.com/how-proud-boys-rose-from-obscurity-to-mainstream-american-politics-2021-1">The Proud Boys -</a> an international all-male nationalist organization of people who oppose political correctness and incite violence - were also among the crowds at the Capitol.The Proud Boys claim to be a "drinking club," but in actuality, they are a radicalization vector rooted in defending the patriarchy. <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-proud-boys-rose-from-obscurity-to-mainstream-american-politics-2021-1">It also has ties to white supremacy</a>, despite its current leader being Cuban-American.<a href="https://www.insider.com/proud-boys-leader-arrested-fbi-for-storming-capitol-2021-1">Nich Ochs,</a> the Hawaii chapter president and failed congressional candidate, was arrested after he posted a selfie smoking a cigarette inside the building.Dominic Pezzola, a former Marine and Proud Boys member, was arrested after a video of him shattering a window in the Capitol with a riot shield was widely shared online.A judge banned the Proud Boys leader, Enrique Tarrio, from DC the day before the planned march outside the Capitol. Tarrio, who is accused of burning a Black Lives Matter flag at a historic Black church during a December pro-Trump rally, posed a threat to do it again, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/judge-banned-proud-boys-chairman-from-dc-ahead-of-rally-2021-1">a judge found.</a>Despite being banned from DC, Tarrio didn't return home to Miami that week. When reached by phone during the <keyword id="10554785" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="capitol-siege">Capitol siege</keyword>, Tarrio told Insider he was in a hotel room in Maryland "not breaking the law."Individuals were also seen <a href="https://www.insider.com/capitol-riots-qanon-protest-conspiracy-theory-washington-dc-protests-2021-1">carrying QAnon emblems</a> and other less specific branding - like Confederate flags of Auschwitz paraphernalia - honoring other hate movements.Sherwin said that law enforcement is not going out of their way to identify the individuals who have been arrested by the extremist groups they associate with but that investigators are looking at how the groups communicated ahead of the attacks.He called it a "tier one top priority" for the US Attorney's office and federal law enforcement to determine whether there was an "overarching command" of the riots.Plans of violence circulated <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/plans-to-storm-the-capitol-circulated-on-social-media-2021-1">online through social media and in plain sight</a> for days ahead of the Capitol siege.<div type="image" title="US Capitol Building riots" height="1663" width="2500" msid="80357323" hostid="261"></div><h2>Being a member of an extremist group is not, on its own, a <keyword id="39494" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Crime">crime</keyword></h2>The Department of Justice <a href="https://www.insider.com/canada-is-considering-labeling-proud-boys-a-terrorist-organization-2021-1">doesn't designate domestic terrorist groups.</a>In the US, belief in abhorrent ideology alone is not a crime, but adherents' illegal actions can be prosecuted."When it comes to domestic terrorism, our investigations focus solely on the criminal activity of individuals-regardless of group membership-that appears to be intended to intimidate or coerce the civilian population or influence the policy of the government by intimidation or coercion," an FBI spokesperson told Insider. "It's important to note that membership in groups that espouse domestic extremist ideology is not illegal in and of itself-no matter how offensive their views might be to the majority of society. Membership in a group is not a sufficient basis for an investigation."The FBI had previously classified the Proud Boys <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/proud-boys-extremist-group-fbi-2018-11">as an extremist group.</a>"These guys have labeled themselves. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Mark Brake/Getty</div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Wall Street's convinced Tesla <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-stock-price-wall-street-is-beginning-to-worry-the-company-might-go-bankrupt-2018-5">will need to raise more cash</a>, and has some theories about how and when that may happen</li><li>Morgan Stanley says that in addition to a capital raise in 2018, Elon Musk may also need an outside partner for more financing. </li></ul>Wall Street remains doubtful that <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tsla-stock">Tesla</a> will go through the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-stock-price-wall-street-is-beginning-to-worry-the-company-might-go-bankrupt-2018-5">rest of 2018 without raising fresh capital</a>.And while Elon Musk<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-tesla-to-be-profitable-in-third-quarter-fourth-quarter-musk-tweets-2018-4"> remains adamant that the electric carmaker can become sustainably cash flow positive in 2018</a>, sell-side analysts are now busy theorizing possibilities for when and how Tesla might raise cash. "Valuing Tesla shares is a volatile, unpredictable dynamic," Adam Jonas, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, said in a note to clients Tuesday. "But we believe it is ultimately dictated by a few key vectors: demand, cash consumption, access to outside capital, management actions/governance, and strategic price discovery."Jonas sees the next stages of Tesla's evolution coming in five parts. He predicts Tesla will raise $2.5 billion in equity in the fourth quarter, even if it doesn't need the money, because it will be easier to do than than when it's a dire necessity. Then, when Model 3 volume eventually hits a plateau, it's a perfect time for a strategic partner to step in."Step 5: Tesla potentially crystallizes strategic value with a partner that can fund the ongoing capital requirements of the auto business or can monetize the value of Tesla's edge compute/machine learning ecosystem," writes Jonas. This could be similar to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-wealth-fund-tesla-stake-private-2018-8">potential investment from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund that originally sparked Musk's go-private bid,</a> but <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-stock-price-saudi-arabia-invests-in-rival-lucid-motors-2018-9-1027540136">eventually fell through.</a>In another scenario laid out by Alexander Diaz-Matos, an analyst at the credit research firm Covenant Review, Tesla could pledge its intellectual property - things like its logo and brand assets - to take on more debt. The company already has $11.5 billion of current outstanding debt. It's similar to a move Ford pulled in 2006, ahead of the automotive industry's meltdown, and "investors have questioned whether Tesla might follow suit with a similar plan, to pledge valuable brand names and trademarks to secure debt and ensure access to liquidity in a time of potent turmoil," Diaz-Matos writes.In order to get around something known as a liens covenant, there would need to be a non-US subsidiary at play."The liens covenant by its terms applies only to domestic restrict subsidiaries," writes Covenant Review. "That is, non-US subsidiaries are not subject to the liens covenant, and therefore non-US subsidiaries, even if they are Restricted Subsidiaries, can pledge their assets to secure debt … because there is now restricted payments covenant, there is no meaningful restriction on [Tesla] transferring value from domestic to foreign subsidiaries."In other words, Tesla would have to contribute its intellectual property assets to a foreign-owned subsidiary that could then pledge that IP to secure more debt. That could "provide Tesla meaningful liquidity in a crunch," Covenant Review notes. Of course, any new debt will add to<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-stock-price-falls-as-wall-street-starts-to-ask-questions-of-elon-musk-2018-9-1027517822"> Tesla's current debt outstanding, which currently stands $11.5 billion</a>. That includes $920 million in convertible bonds that could become due if the stock price doesn't hit $360 by March 1.Tuesday's slump to $283,<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-stock-price-plunges-after-report-us-launched-criminal-probe-over-musk-statements-2018-9-1027544733"> following news of a reported criminal probe by US regulators that Tesla has denied</a>, leaves the stock 27% below that threshold."We are increasingly of the view that the confluence of economic, competitive, regulatory, political, and technological forces may challenge Tesla's status as a stand-alone entity," writes Morgan Stanley's Jonas, who was a $291 price target for the stock.
