Mumbai, Jul 3 () The recommencement of commercial passenger flight services in a graded manner is unlikely to help the domestic aviation industry recover in the current financial year with domestic air traffic expected to shrink by 41-46 per cent and international travel demand by a negative 67-72 per cent year-on-year owing to COVID-19, a report said on Friday. <p>The domestic passenger flight services restarted from May 25 after a two months hiatus due to the lockdown in the wake of coronavirus pandemic. The international operations, however, remained suspended since March 22 for similar reasons. </p><p>The government on Friday extended the suspension of scheduled international flights till July 30. It, however, said that some international scheduled routes may be permitted on a case-to-case basis. </p><p>"As per our study, though restricted recommencement of domestic air traffic has begun, this will in no case help the industry to recover the lost ground in FY2021. However, H2 FY2021 will witness some recovery, with Q4 FY2021 witnessing a degrowth of just 3-14 per cent y-o-y in domestic with improved passenger load factors (PLFs)," ratings agency Icra said in the report. </p><p>Icra said it expects the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak to be more profound and long lasting on international travel compared to domestic travel, and "overall FY2021 is expected to witness around 41-46 per cent de-growth in domestic passenger traffic while the international passenger volume are likely to witness a significant de-growth of about 67-72 per cent y-o-y." </p><p>The international traffic may improve sequentially, with the March quarter of the fiscal likely to witness a de-growth of 30-40 per cent y-o-y, it added. </p><p>"The domestic passenger traffic has gradually increased from 30,550 on Day 1 (of recommencement) with a peak of 72,583 on Day 21. Since then, the same has remained above 58,000 (till Day 37, which was June 30, 2020). </p><p>"In the similar period, the number of flights departing has also gradually increased from 416 on Day 1 to 723 on Day 37, with a peak of 826 flights on June 22, 2020. However, this is significantly lower than the average daily departures of 2,882 flights in June 2019," said Kinjal Shah, Vice President, Icra. </p><p>According to Shah, the domestic airlines are operating at a lower capacity – total 21,696 departures in June 2020, as against 86,456 departures in June 2019, resulting in a 74.9 per cent reduction y-o-y in capacity deployment. </p><p>For June, the domestic passenger traffic was 19.5 lakh, as against 119.9 lakh in June 2019, a de-growth of 83.7 per cent over the year-ago period. The average number of passengers per flight during June was 90, as against an average of 139 passengers per flight in June last year, Icra said. </p><p>"Thus, it is estimated that the domestic aviation industry operated at a PLF of about 58 per cent in June, as against 89.3 per cent in June 2019, that too on a very low capacity. For May (25th to 31st), the first week domestic passenger traffic was 2.6 lakh, as against 115.6 lakh in May 2019, resulting in a y-o-y de-growth of 97.7 per cent," she said. </p><p>However, under the Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) for evacuation of Indian citizens from foreign shores, which started from May 7, the international passenger traffic (in-bound and outbound) has been 2,26,675 for the period between May 7 and June 30, which is a de-growth of 93.7 per cent over May and June 2019, Icra said. </p><p>As for aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, following the pandemic outbreak, crude oil prices declined materially – reached a low of around USD 19/ barrel in April, thereby leading to a decline in ATF prices, as per the ratings agency. </p>However, crude oil prices have increased gradually since then, and currently ranges around USD 41/ barrel. Consequently, the ATF prices have also increased sequentially by 13.3 per cent in June, and by 24.1 per cent in July, it said. IAS MR

The flight was two hours one way.</li><li>An aviation blog theorized that the mistake was made because the airport was ordered to reopen earlier this month, but that decision was immediately overruled by the local government. </li><li>There were only two people on the flight. The airline has rebooked their flights.</li></ul><p>A flight from Düsseldorf, Germany, to the Italian island of Sardinia was forced to turn around on Saturday after a two-hour flight because the destination airport was still closed due to coronavirus lockdown measures. </p><p>Eurowings Flight 9844 made it all the way to Sardinian airspace before it was told by air traffic control that the airport was closed to commercial traffic, <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/eurowings-dusseldorf-olbia/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> reported.</p><p>The plane had been carrying just two passengers at the time, CNN added. </p><p>The flight then made the two-hour return trip to Germany, and the airline has rebooked all two passengers onto other flights. </p><p>Both Italy and Germany have started lifting their strict coronavirus lockdowns.</p><p>Aviation blog <a href="https://onemileatatime.com/eurowings-flies-to-closed-airport/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">One Mile at a Time</a> theorized that the mistake was made because Sardinia's Olbia Airport was ordered to reopen on May 17, but then the local government immediately overruled the decision. The airport is to remain closed to commercial flights until June 2 at the earliest. </p><p>A Eurowings spokesperson told CNN in a statement that "the situation at numerous airports in Europe is very dynamic" due to the coronavirus outbreak. </p><p>"The large amount of information provided on operating hours or airport closures are often changed at short notice," the spokesperson said, adding that there are "daily changes in entry regulations in the various countries."</p><p>Air travel has fallen dramatically during the pandemic, and airlines are now scrambling to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-show-air-travel-during-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-5">implement new policies</a> to stop viral transmissions and to make crew and passengers feel safe. A number of British troops have been stationed in Ukraine since 2015.</p><p>But Wallace <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/dec/18/uk-unlikely-to-send-troops-if-russia-invades-ukraine-says-defence-secretary">said in December</a> that the UK would not send troops to Ukraine if Russia invaded.</p><p>President Joe Biden <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-us-not-obligated-war-russia-invades-ukraine-2021-12">ruled out</a> sending US troops to Ukraine in December, but warned Russia that it would face <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/putin-warns-biden-call-relations-collapse-sanctions-ukraine-2021-12">harsh sanctions</a> should it invade Ukraine.</p><p>The US sent a consignment of military aid, including small arms and ammunition, to Ukraine in December, <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2021/12/08/politics/us-ukraine-security-assistance-military-training/index.html">CNN reported</a>. Four countermortar radars were scheduled to be sent from the US to Ukraine in 2022, CNN said.</p>

UK planes took a long detour around Germany to deliver weapons to Ukraine in case Russia invades

"With Germany, we will be signing it soon. No dates have, however, come for the MoU with Canada," a civil aviation ministry official told The Economic Times on condition of anonymity. Officials explained that the pact between India and Germany allows both countries to have air marshals on board Indian and German flights.  <br />

A decision on a pact with German authorities was taken in April last year at the Indo-German Working Group on counter terrorism, where it was decided to cooperate with each other regarding the deployment on armed law enforcement officers on flights. <br />

Former airline pilots say the presence of sky marshals on board gives confidence to the commander of the flight. "The reason these countries want India to sign an MoU is because of the threat perception they have about India, which may not be true, but it's their perception," said Shakti Lumba, a former pilot and former head of operations at IndiGo. <br />
Presence of air marshals on board is a comforting factor for any pilot. According to the rules now, the pilot is isolated from the cabin in case of an eventuality and the presence of air marshals provides them the comfort that there's someone to protect the passengers.<br />

While the concept of placing in air marshals was started by the US in 1968, India started placing air marshals after the hijack of an IA flight (IC 814) flying between Kathmandu and New Delhi. As of today, India puts marshals on flights to SAARC nations and various destinations within the country. India puts sky marshals on a minimum of 1,200 flights a month. <br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A US passenger took a 96-hour round trip to Germany to collect his lost luggage.</li><li>The traveler had left Apple AirTags in the bags that showed they were in Dusseldorf, Germany.</li></ul><p>A US passenger took a 96-hour round trip to Germany to collect his lost luggage after Apple AirTags showed the bags were in the city of Dusseldorf.</p><p>Cameron Hopkins and his family had their luggage lost on a flight to Krakow, Poland, during a lengthy trip to Europe in June, according to the travel website <a href="https://thepointsguy.co.uk/news/europe-luggage-traveller-flies-back/">The Points Guy</a>.</p><p>After the family's Lufthansa flight from Venice to Poland was canceled, Hopkins spent $900 booking the four of them onto a Eurowings flight that included a stop, but no plane transfer in Dusseldorf Airport in Germany, per The Points Guy. </p><p>After landing in Krakow, Hopkins told the travel website: "We get there, and half the people on the plane get their luggage — and half don't."</p><p>Hopkins' bags had been taken off the plane during the stop in Dusseldorf, Apple AirTags packed in the luggage showed, he told The Points Guy.</p><p>The family were left to watch frustrated as the bags did not move for weeks, The Points Guy added.</p><p>"It's having an itch you can't scratch," Hopkins said. "It's madness."</p><p>After arriving back in the US, Hopkins and his girlfriend waited another five days for their bags to be returned until eventually taking matters into their own hands. On July 3, Hopkins traveled back to Germany to collect the bags himself.</p><p>He said that despite knowing the location of the bags, airline customer service was unhelpful.</p><p>"It's pretty much just screaming into the abyss," he said.</p><p>Hopkins flew back to Europe on a flight from Las Vegas to Dusseldorf with a stop in Frankfurt, Germany.</p><p>Unfortunately, the second leg of his trip also got hit with travel disruptions and he had to complete the last part of the journey by rail.</p><p>When he finally arrived in Dusseldorf, he was shown to several lost luggage rooms where he was left to comb through piles of lost baggage that he described as smelling "horrible."</p><p>After managing to track down his family's four suitcases, he dropped some off at his girlfriend's parents in Poland and traveled back to the US with the rest.</p>

All 150 passengers and crew on board the airliner were killed. French authorities point to the apparently intentional downing of the flight by its 28 year-old co-pilot Andreas Lubitz as the most likely cause of the crash.</p><p>Here's everything we know about the crash of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/prosecutor-germanwings-flight-descent-could-only-have-happened-voluntarily-2015-3" target="_blank">Germanwings flight 9525</a>:</p><ul><li><span>Founded in 2002, Germanwings is a low-cost subsidiary of Germany's Lufthansa.</span></li><li>The Airbus A320 <span>- registration number D-AIPX - </span>was delivered to Lufthansa on June 2, 1991.</li><li>D-AIPX joined the Germanwings fleet in 2014</li><li><span>According to a statement from Airbus, the Germanwings jet had accumulated 58,300 flight hours on 46,700 flights and was powered by a pair of General Electric/SNECMA CFM-56 5A1 turbofan engines. </span></li><li><span>The Airbus had received maintenance attention in Düsseldorf the day before the crash.</span></li><li><span>According to the airline, the jet took off with a clean bill of health.</span></li></ul><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><span>Weather conditions during the flight were clear.</span></li><li><span>The plane dropped to a cruising altitude of just 5,000 feet from 38,000 feet in about 8 minutes.</span></li><li><span><span>Contact between the airplane and French radar and flight controllers was lost at 10:53 a.m. local time at an altitude of about 6,000 feet. </span></span></li><li><span><span>A witness nearby told the Associated Press, <span>"The noise I heard was long - like 8 seconds - as if the plane was going more slowly than a military plane speed. He had just 630 hours of experience at the time of the crash.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">According to Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, Lubitz took a months-long leave of absence from training at one point. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A pilot on a German-bound flight from the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> told non-German passengers aboard the Sunday flight they needed to get off the plane before it took off or face mandatory COVID-19 testing and a subsequent quarantine when they landed, according to audio published by <a href="https://m.bild.de/politik/inland/politik-inland/test-zwang-und-feldbetten-fuer-einreisende-aus-grossbritannien-corona-mutation-s-74557464.bildMobile.html">BILD</a>.</li><li>The pilot first said passengers would quarantine in hotels at or near the airport, but in a subsequent message, he said passengers would remain at the airport due to a lack of space at hotels.</li><li>"Passengers without a German passport need to be aware that there are no more hotel rooms available, all hotels reached maximum occupancy in Stuttgart," the pilot told passengers in audio obtained by BILD, offering them the opportunity to deplane. </li><li>A number of European countries, including <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/covid-19-multiple-countries-close-borders-uk-fearing-new-strain-2020-12">have imposed restrictions on travel</a> with the UK over a new, potentially more contagious strain of COVID-19 detected there.</li></ul><p>Passengers on at least one flight Sunday departing the UK headed to Germany were told by the plane's pilot they faced a mandatory test and quarantine upon landing at Stuttgart Airport should they choose to remain on board the aircraft.</p><p>In <a href="https://m.bild.de/politik/inland/politik-inland/test-zwang-und-feldbetten-fuer-einreisende-aus-grossbritannien-corona-mutation-s-74557464.bildMobile.html">audio obtained by the German publication BILD</a>, which is owned by Insider's parent company Axel Springer SE, a pilot on a Eurowings flight from London's Heathrow Airport to Stuttgart Airport in Germany informed passengers of the new requirements.</p><p>"I am the captain of this flight," the pilot says in a message delivered in English over the plane's intercom system, alerting passengers to an "important announcement" with little room for "discussion." </p><p>The pilot continued, adding that all passengers with German passports will "go through the police station" as normal but said those who do not carry German passports would be required to undergo testing for COVID-19 immediately upon landing in Germany before they were brought to a hotel at or near Stuttgart Airport to quarantine until receiving their test result.</p><p>In a subsequent recording, translated from German into English by Business Insider, the Eurowings pilot updated passengers that hotel space at and near the airport had reached capacity. </p><p>"German citizens continue to be able to enter the country without any limitations," he said, noting he received the update within the last minute. "Passengers without a German passport need to be aware that there are no more hotel rooms available, all hotels reached maximum occupancy in Stuttgart."</p><p>He told passengers there would instead be a "designated, separated area in the airport with camp beds" to house passengers while they wait for their test results to return.</p><p>A spokesperson for Stuttgart Airport told Business Insider on Sunday evening that the airport "will be testing passengers arriving from London" in "accordance with the authorities." </p><p>Representatives for the Federal Police at Stuttgart Airport did not immediately return Business Insider's request for comment on Sunday, nor did representatives for Eurowings. </p><p>In a video obtained by BILD and reviewed by Business Insider, a passenger from the UK arriving at Hannover Airport in Germany was seen providing personal information, such as his address, to someone dressed entirely in PPE.</p><p>The audio recording comes amid <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/covid-19-multiple-countries-close-borders-uk-fearing-new-strain-2020-12">numerous European countries on Sunday limiting travel</a> with the UK following the discovery of a new, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-coronavirus-strain-uk-spread-experts-unsure-2020-12">potentially more contagious strain of COVID-19</a> and a <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/covid-cases-latest-uk-coronavirus-death-toll-b407437.html">surge of cases</a>. Germany on Sunday afternoon issued a ban on flights from the UK beginning at midnight. </p><p>German Health Minister Jens Spahn announced the travel restrictions Sunday afternoon, adding that the government planned to announce greater travel restrictions on Monday, according to <a href="https://www.dw.com/en/coronavirus-digest-germany-bans-flights-from-uk-over-covid-mutation/a-55999636">DW</a>.</p>

Our pilots were instructed to land south of Paris." </span></p><p><span>Norwegian said the flight had been approved by Eurocontrol, Europe's air traffic management organization, and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).</span></p><p><span>Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 shows that the plane travelled over France and <a href="https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/se-rtb#20d961bc">circled at the German border</a> before landing in France.</span></p><p><span>The Norwegian spokesman said they believed that the plane was still in France, and had not yet made it to Stockholm. </span></p><p><span>Europe's aviation regulator, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), banned the 737 Max planes from European airspace on March 12, two days after an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max crashed and killed 157 people. EASA did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.</span></p><p>A spokeswoman for Deutsche Flugsicherun, which runs air traffic control in Germany, told Business Insider that Germany extended its ban on all 737 Max flights through its airspace from Wednesday until September 8.</p><p>She said that the organization told Norwegian this, and said that the plane would not be allowed to enter German airspace as a result.</p><p>But Norwegian's spokesman told Business Insider that it "<span>did not receive any notice from the German authorities prior to the positioning flight departing."</span></p><p><span>"If we had received any contrary information, we obviously wouldn't have taken off."</span></p><p>The spokesman said it received approval from Eurocontrol and EASA. When asked if it contacted Germany, it said it "<span>received the approvals from the relevant aviation bodies as required."</span></p><p>The planes will remain grounded until the software update is approved. Gen.
