The doctors at <keyword id="136410" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="fortis-hospital" source="Orion">Fortis Hospital</keyword>, <keyword id="6361194" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vasant-kunj" source="Orion">Vasant Kunj</keyword>, decided to perform the procedure - a technique arguably first described in medical literature in 1854 - as the newer and more sophisticated ones were not feasible due to the patient's precarious condition, the hospital said. A flap surgery involves lifting tissue from a donor site and placing it on the recipient site with an intact blood supply. It was considered the gold standard to reconstruct soft tissue defects of the lower limb during its heydays. However, the technique fell into disuse with the advent of the highly sophisticated microvascular techniques, which enable doctors to join or repair damaged blood vessels or nerves, the hospital said. The road accident victim, who had undergone three unsuccessful surgeries in Iraq in eight months, was brought to the hospital with acute dislocation of the left knee joint and a severely infected, pus-oozing leg, the hospital said. Investigations revealed that the patient's affected leg had no intact blood vessel due to multiple injuries, which is necessary for the reconstructive surgeries currently in vogue. The doctors then decided to perform the cross-leg flap surgery. "After much deliberation, we decided to adopt a complex, multi-step approach. Though the treatment spanned over five weeks, the outcome is satisfactory," said Dr <keyword id="3583003" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dhananjay-gupta" source="Orion">Dhananjay Gupta</keyword>, Director, Orthopaedics &amp; Joint Replacement Surgery, Fortis Vasant Kunj. "Presently, the patient's leg is well covered with soft tissue and there is no evidence of infection," he said. "The patient has been asked to start walking and he is currently undergoing physio-rehabilitation. We hope that once the fracture heals, over a period of three months, he will be able to take his full weight on that leg. We have also planned for additional procedures in the future, which may be required," Gupta added. The case was challenging because the patient had a severe infection and poor bone quality, the hospital said. "So, placing it in a manner where there's no pressure between the two feet and making sure that there is no bending of the flap while it is taking up the new circulation was challenging and required planning, and of course cooperation of the patient," she added. The doctors had initially thought of doing a microvascular free flap reconstruction, which involves taking muscle and skin along with the blood vessels from either the back or the abdomen but had to abandon the idea as there was no intact blood vessel in the patient's leg. Fortis Hospital in Delhi performs a 19th century procedure to save Iraqi national's leg

In an unusual and life-threatening incident, doctors at <keyword id="20177521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortis-Hospital" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Fortis Hospital" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Fortis Hospital">Fortis Hospital</keyword> in Vasant Kunj, <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword>, found themselves face-to-face with an unexpected patient — a <keyword id="23501754" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="live-cockroach" source="keywords">live cockroach</keyword> lodged inside a 23-year-old man’s <keyword id="22071955" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="small-intestine" source="keywords">small intestine</keyword>. The medical team, led by Dr Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant in <keyword id="21383124" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gastroenterology" source="keywords">Gastroenterology</keyword>, carried out a swift <keyword id="23501755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="endoscopic-procedure" source="keywords">endoscopic procedure</keyword> to remove the 3-centimetre insect in a daring operation that saved the young man’s life. <h2>A painful surprise</h2>The patient had been experiencing significant <keyword id="20688085" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="abdominal-pain" source="keywords">abdominal pain</keyword> and trouble digesting food for two or three days when he finally sought help. What he didn’t expect was that the source of his discomfort would turn out to be a live cockroach. Upon his admission, Dr Vatsya and his team decided to conduct an Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy to investigate the cause of his symptoms. During the procedure, they discovered the uninvited intruder lurking in the man’s small intestine. "A live cockroach in the small intestine is a life-threatening situation," Dr Vatsya said, noting the urgency of the discovery. "We proceeded immediately with the endoscopy to remove it. If it hadn’t been removed, the cockroach could have caused severe infections and potentially fatal complications." <h2>The peculiar procedure</h2>The extraction, while extraordinary, was surprisingly straightforward. The doctors employed an endoscope, a flexible tube outfitted with two channels — one for infusing air and water, and the other for suction. Dr Vatsya’s team used the suction channel to trap the cockroach, swiftly guiding it up and out of the patient’s digestive tract in under ten minutes. The medical team was equally relieved and intrigued by the unique case. Dr Vatsya speculated that the cockroach may have found its way into the patient’s mouth while he was sleeping, or, more bizarrely, been swallowed unknowingly during a meal. This surprising incident serves as a reminder that life can sometimes deliver the most unexpected challenges. Though rare, cases like this underscore the importance of seeking prompt medical attention when unusual symptoms arise. Thanks to the quick action and precision of Dr Vatsya and his team, the young man walked away from what could have been a far more dangerous situation. While we’re all advised to stay vigilant about what we put into our bodies, sometimes it seems that creepy crawlies find their own way in. The Williams-Sonoma brand, known for its sustainable and high-quality products launched its products digitally in India in July 2022. It also opened its first retail store in September at the Ambience Mall in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. Padukone will also promote the brand’s international expansion as a brand ambassador, and also help co-create a collection for Pottery Barn, said the company. “Through our collaboration launching in 2023, customers will have the opportunity to bring Pottery Barn’s coveted designs infused with Deepika’s signature style into their own homes,” said Monica Bhargava, chief design officer, Pottery Barn. Pottery Barn isn’t the first global chain to trade its sights on India. In 2018, Swedish furniture giant IKEA entered India and now has five stores across Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. In 2021, Brooklyn-based West Elm, in partnership with Reliance Stores, also opened its stores in India - starting with Mumbai. Interestingly, both West Elm and Pottery Barn fall under the umbrella of Williams-Sonoma. Deepika is also not the first Indian celebrity that Pottery Barn has partnered with, either. Pottery Barn signs Deepika Padukone as its brand ambassador

New Delhi, June 15 () Mother Dairy on Monday said it has tied up with food delivery company Zomato for supply of fruits and vegetables in Delhi-NCR. Mother Dairy, a leading milk supplier in Delhi-NCR, sells fruits and vegetables through more than 300 Safal outlets. To begin with, Safal will start this service from 11 of its stores. Each of the 11 Safal outlets will cater to a radius of 10 km around them. Consumers can avail the facility of home delivery by ordering the products through Zomato application, the company said in a statement. "To catalyse the ease of living and convenience for our consumers, Safal has initiated the home delivery option in partnership with Zomato," Pradipta Sahoo, Business Head - Safal, Mother Dairy Fruits &amp; Vegetables, said. "In the initial phase, key locations of Delhi-NCR like Saket, Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, Janakpuri and Panchsheel Enclave in Delhi and sector 50 and sector 29 in Noida will be covered. Going forward, the service will gradually be expanded to other outlets to ensure coverage to the entire Delhi-NCR region," he said. New Delhi, Contrary to what some people think that the <keyword id="95867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bird-flu">bird flu</keyword> <keyword id="10860" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Virus">virus</keyword>, also known as Avian influenza, is spread to humans via consumption of cooked poultry products, health experts on Sunday stressed that it usually does not infect people as the virus is heat-labile (degraded and killed when subjected to heat). Avian influenza refers to the disease caused by infection with avian (bird) influenza (flu) Type A viruses. These viruses occur naturally among wild aquatic birds worldwide and can infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species. According to the <keyword id="935509" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health">World Health</keyword> organisation (WHO), <keyword id="27178" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cooking">cooking</keyword> of poultry (e.g. chicken, ducks and geese) at or above 70 degree Celsius so that absolutely no meat remains raw and red, is a safe measure to kill the virus in areas with outbreaks in poultry. Richa Sareen, consultant (pulmonology) at Fortis Vasant Kunj in New Delhi, said the virus is heat-labile and it gets killed with cooking temperatures. "At this time, people should eat fully cooked chicken and eggs and not raw or partially cooked ones. One should avoid going to open markets that sell poultry as they are the focal point of the spread," Sareen told IANS. "People who handle poultry should take special precautions. They should wear PPE, gloves and masks while handling birds and should practice frequent hand washing," she added. Although the virus causing bird flu usually does not infect people, but rare cases of human infection with these viruses have been reported, especially in individuals working with infected domestic birds. "The possible cause of infections in humans is when they come in contact with birds with the viruses and enough viruses get into a person's eyes, nose or mouth, or is inhaled through the excretions of birds," said Kunal Kothari, Senior Physician, Internal Medicine, <keyword id="52870" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SMS-Medical-College">SMS Medical College</keyword> in Jaipur. "The spread of Bird Flu from one individual, who is sick to another has been very rare and data is limited, inefficient and not sustained but as a precaution, we should all be watchful of public health advisory," Kothari added. Bird Flu is a communicable virus among the avian population and human to human spread is not too prominent with the current strain. However, viruses are prone to mutation, so if this virus undergoes mutation in future, it has the potential to spread from human to human and cause a pandemic. Bird flu mostly infects the respiratory system of humans. Common symptoms are fever, runny nose, <keyword id="51415" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sore-throat">sore throat</keyword>, cough, muscle aches, etc. "If severe, it can cause ARDS, multi-organ involvement and even death. The sporadic data on bird flu from the past shows very high mortality, to the tune of 60 per cent. Thus, it becomes important to take precautions now," Sareen mentioned. Nevertheless, maintaining distance from birds in the environment is important as the spread of the avian virus is through the saliva, faecal matter of an infected bird. "The avian virus is airborne. Notify the community health department on seeing sick or dead birds and try not to come in direct contact with these birds without proper masks, gloves and disinfectants," Kothari noted. The Central government has issued a status report of avian influenza in the country, saying the disease has been confirmed in seven states. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry &amp; Dairying (DAHD) has issued an advisory to the affected states so as to avoid further spread of disease.  The university administration <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">hiked</a> the hostel mess security fee from ₹5,500 to ₹12,000, adding a service charge worth ₹1,700. It also increased the charges of a single room from ₹20 to ₹600 per month and to ₹300 for a double bed room which is to be shared. That accounts for an annual fee hike of almost ₹3,000 per student. That is a pain point for university students where “majority of students come from the most marginalized backgrounds in this country,” News18 <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">reported</a>. Added to this, hostel curfews and a dress code also did not resonate well with the students. The protest coincides with the institute’s third convocation ceremony. The student body called for a boycott as they demand a rollback of the rules and the fee hike. They also intend to marching towards the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. Delhi police used water cannons to disperse the students as they tried to cross the barricades to meet the vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. The VC repeatedly rejected the request to meet and discuss the issues.
