Indian-Americans play Vande Mataram in Times Square to celebrate independence day

The <keyword id="6355014" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="delhi-high-court" source="Orion">Delhi High Court</keyword> on Wednesday sought the Centre's stand on a plea seeking directions for 'Vande Mataram', a poem which had played a historic role in the struggle for India's freedom, to be "honoured equally" with 'Jana Gana Mana' and be given an "equal" status. The Public Interest Litigation (<keyword id="6355791" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pil" source="Orion">PIL</keyword>) filed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader and lawyer <keyword id="2181576" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ashwini-upadhyay" source="Orion">Ashwini Upadhyay</keyword> sought direction to respondents, including the Central <keyword id="26362" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="government" source="Orion">government</keyword> and Delhi government to ensure that 'Jana Gana Mana' and 'Vande Mataram' are played and sung in all schools and educational institutions on every working day. Issuing notice in the matter, a division bench presided over by Acting Chief Justice <keyword id="219410" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vipin-sanghi" source="Orion">Vipin Sanghi</keyword> and Justice Sachin Datta directed the central government to file its response within six weeks. After hearing the submissions of <keyword id="295014" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="upadhyay" source="Orion">Upadhyay</keyword>, the bench posted the matter for November 9. During the course of the hearing, the petitioner submitted that there are no guidelines and 'Vande Mataram' is being played in distorted manner which is contrary to the statement made by <keyword id="69895" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dr-rajendra-prasad" source="Orion">Dr Rajendra Prasad</keyword> in the <keyword id="99585" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="constituent-assembly" source="Orion">Constituent Assembly</keyword>. The PIL contended that on January 24, 1950, Constituent Assembly Chairman Dr Rajendra Prasad said: "There is one matter which has been pending for discussion, namely the question of the <keyword id="100239" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="national-anthem" source="Orion">National Anthem</keyword>. At one time, it was thought that the matter might be brought up before the <keyword id="7173" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="house" source="Orion">House</keyword> and a decision taken by the House by way of a resolution. But it has been felt that, instead of taking a formal decision by means of resolution, it is better if I make a statement with regard to the national anthem. "Accordingly, I make this statement. Composition consisting of the words and music known as 'Jana Gana Mana' is the 'National Anthem of India', subject to such alternations in the words, as the Government may authorise as occasions arises; and the song 'Vande Mataram', which has played a historic part in the struggle for Indian freedom, shall be honoured equally with 'Jana Gana Mana' and shall have equal status with it. I hope this will satisfy the members." The plea stated that 'Vande Mataram' is the symbol of our history, sovereignty, unity and pride. If any citizen by any overt or covert act shows disrespect to it, it would not only be an anti-social activity but it would also spell doom to all our rights and very existence as a citizen of a sovereign nation. Every citizen must therefore not only refrain from any such activities but also do his best to prevent if any miscreant tries to show any disrespect to 'Vande Mataram'. "We must be proud of our Nation, our Constitution, National Anthem and National Flag and put national interest above our personal interests and only then will we be able to protect our hard-earned freedom and sovereignty. It is the duty of the executive to frame a national policy to promote and propagate 'Vande Mataram'," it read. Delhi High Court seeks Centre's stand on Jana Gana Mana-like status to Vande Mataram

Marking the 125th anniversary of <keyword id="6364300" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="swami-vivekananda">Swami Vivekananda</keyword>'s address at the <keyword id="898711" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="world-parliament-of-religions">World Parliament of Religions</keyword> in Chicago, as <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHachORLXSc" data-type="tilCustomLink">Narendra Modi took to the stage earlier today to deliver a speech on the theme “Young India, New India”</a>, he urged young Indian minds to work for a modern India. "On 11 September, 1983, just with a few words, a youngster from India won over the world and showed the world the power of oneness," Modi said, while addressing students across the country from the Vigyan Bhawan stage in the national capital. While most people around the globe remember <keyword id="43510" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="9/11">9/11</keyword> for the ghastly terror attacks in 2001 which shook the United States of America, Modi said people in India remember 9/11 for a different reason... because of the dynamism and bold leadership of Swamiji. Vivekananda supported experimentation and innovation and his government worked according to the ideals shown by him. While asking students to follow these ideals, Modi batted strongly for innovation and promoting skills among the youth. He also said Swami Vivekananda gave the concept of ‘One Asia’ to the world. Modi also instilled his belief of a Cleaner India on the progressiveness and awareness of the youth, and their willingness to work for the cause. "As I entered, I heard people chanting loudly “<keyword id="6381906" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vande-mataram">Vande Mataram</keyword>, Vande Mataram!”... Emotions of patriotism fills my heart. But do we have the right to say Vande Mataram?... Indians do not have the right to chant Vande Mataram if they go on to spit pan and throw garbage on roads. Those who clean the roads and surroundings have the first right in the country," the Prime Minister said. He urged students, especially university students, to pitch in to take the 'Clean India Initiative' forward. The resolution was moved to initiate discussions between the central government and elected representatives in Jammu and <keyword id="19896255" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir" source="keywords">Kashmir</keyword>, a proposal that drew a furious response from <keyword id="20450486" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP-members" source="keywords">BJP members</keyword> who accused the Speaker of bias and lambasted the ruling National Conference (NC) government. "The mandate (of the Assembly polls) was in favor of abrogation of Article 370 because we (BJP) got 26 percent votes against NC's 23 percent," Sham Lal Sharma argued, framing the election results as support for the Centre’s 2019 decision to revoke Article 370. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary defended the resolution, emphasizing the need to restore special status. In presenting the resolution, Choudhary declared, "This Assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees, which safeguarded the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and expresses concern over their unilateral removal." The resolution also called for the Government of India to initiate a dialogue with the elected representatives of Jammu and Kashmir for the restoration of special status and constitutional guarantees and to devise constitutional mechanisms to achieve these ends. "This Assembly emphasises that any process for restoration must safeguard both national unity and the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir," the document added. As the fallout continues, the resolution has stirred deep-seated <keyword id="21391765" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="political-tensions" source="keywords">political tensions</keyword>, exposing rifts within the Assembly and drawing the spotlight back on the long-running debate over Article 370. Mobile and wearables, IT and industrial segments currently contribute around 80 per cent of the semiconductor revenues in the country in 2021. Further policy reforms and building of a semiconductor ecosystem will reduce reliance on imports going forward, according to the report by the India Electronics &amp; Semiconductor Association (IESA) and <keyword id="6439913" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="counterpoint-research" source="Orion">Counterpoint Research</keyword>. "Before the end of this decade, there will be nothing that will not be touched by electronics and the ubiquitous 'chip'. Be it fighting carbon emissions, renewable energy, food safety, or healthcare, the semiconductor chip will be all-pervasive," said <keyword id="1689498" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="krishna-moorthy" source="Orion">Krishna Moorthy</keyword>, CEO and President, IESA. The Indian government recently announced an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore (around $10 billion), under its PLI scheme, separately for the development of a semiconductor and display manufacturing electronics ecosystem. Meanwhile, Maharashtra has beaten at least 5 states to win a stupendous Rs 2.06 lakh-crore investment by Vedanta Group-Foxconn partnership in the sunrise semiconductors chips and display fabrications sector in Pune. "The gradual shift from feature phones to smartphones has been generating increased proportions of advanced logic processors, memory, integrated controllers, sensors and other components. This will continue to drive the value of the semiconductor content in smartphones, aided by the rise of wearables such as smartwatch and TWS," explained Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint Research. According to Counterpoint Vice President <keyword id="248904" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="neil-shah" source="Orion">Neil Shah</keyword>, the next big boom for semiconductor components will come from across sectors. "However, the telecom sector with the advent of 5G and fiber network rollout will be a key catalyst in boosting the semiconductor components consumption," <keyword id="1858" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="shah" source="Orion">Shah</keyword> said. This consumption will not only come from the advanced semiconductor-heavy 5G and FTTH network infrastructure equipment, which will contribute to more than 14 per cent of the total semiconductor consumption in 2026, "but also from the highly capable AI-driven 5G endpoints, from smartphones, tablets, PCs, connected cars, industrial robotics to private networks," he mentioned. In 2021, India's end equipment market stood at $119 billion in terms of revenue. It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 19% from 2021 to 2026. The electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) sector in India will play a major role in the country's overall growth, from sourcing components to design manufacturing, the report mentioned. New Delhi, Apr 5 () "It's not a party," "It's not Diwali," netizens vented their ire on social media, as people switched off lights at their homes at 9 pm on Sunday and instead of lighting candles, burst firecrackers in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for a nine-minute candlelight vigil.Modi had called for a nine-minute candlelight vigil on Sunday as a means to dispel the darkness spread by the coronavirus pandemic. He had asked people to switch off the lights at their homes and light a candle or a diya at their doorsteps or in their balconies at 9 pm on Sunday.While many put up video clips and pictures of themselves lighting candles, most social media posts came down heavily against those bursting crackers.Netizens put up video clips and pictures of people bursting crackers and shouting slogans as 9 pm approached."Corona ke Bharat aagman par deshwaasi khushi manate hue. Well done (people welcoming the entry of corona to India)," tweeted Arun Arora, taking a dig at those bursting crackers.Twitter user Sparsh Oberoi, however, attributed the celebrations to boredom."I find that we are getting crazier by every activity. Thiruvananthapuram, May 11 (): Fresh COVID-19 casescontinued to rise in Kerala with seven people, including areturnee from Kuwait, who had arrived in the state on May 9,testing positive for the coronavirus on Monday, taking thetotal number of infected people to 27.One region in Wayanad district has been categorised as ahot spot.A day after Kasaragod district was declared COVID-19-freeby the health department, four people who had come fromMaharashtra were found infected with the deadlyvirus,stateHealth minister K K Shailaja said.A 11-month old infantfrom Wayanad, the grandchild of atruck driver who had tested positive after returning from theKoyambedu market, a hot spot in Chennai, also tested positivefor the virus.The man's wife, mother and the truck cleaner's son werealso infectedthrough contact earlier.With the Kuwait returnee testing positive, so far sixpeople repatriated to the state in flights from the Gulf aspart of the centre's 'Vande Mataram' mission, have testedpositive for COVID-19.This person has been admitted to the Manjeri MedicalCollege Hospital.A man from Palakkad, who had come from Chennai, alsotested positive for the virus, a government release said. Meanwhile, there were no negative results in Kerala onMonday and till now, 489 people have recovered."As of now, 1,307 people have reached the state fromabroad in the repatriation flights from the gulf sectoroperated by the Centre.Out of this, 650 are under home quarantine and 641 are incovid care centres. The words “Jai Hind” roughly translates to "Victory to India". The Madhya Pradesh School Education Minister, Vijay Shah, believes that this measure will “foster patriotism” in students and has directed all 1.22 lakh government schools in the state to strictly follow this order. While the directive is not compulsory for private schools, they will be issued an advisory in this regard. They also had a trial run for this purpose wherein children attending schools in the state’s Satna district had to cry out “Jai Hind” from October 1, 2017. Instead, he suggested that the “government should first think about the quality of education and lack of teachers in government schools." A move similar to this was heavily criticised last year when the Centre issued a directive laying out how Independence Day should be ‘celebrated’ in schools. This order dictated that among other things, students belonging to Islamic educational institutions, Madrasas, had to sing the national song “Vande Mataram”. The Ministry of Human Resource Development also ordered schools to conduct quiz contests, lectures and debates and as proof that this was followed, they were asked to submit corroborating videos the office of Sarva Shiksha Mission (SSM) by 31 August 2017. In India, students are being directed to respond to school roll calls with patriotic salutations

The protests and counter protests at the Jawaharlal Nehru University are refusing to die out. What started as an event to mark the death anniversary of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, by alleged students of the University, at the campus has snowballed into a gigantic political controversy, resulting in detentions under sedition charges, assault on journalists amongst other things etc. 
 
Here is the timeline of what happened at the JNU campus: 
 
- Alleged students of the JNU had organised an event to protest against judicial hanging of Afzal Guru in 2013 and also to express solidarity with Kashmiri migrants. 
 
- Posters were put up at the Sabarmati dhaba of JNU campus about the same. Also, a programme-‘A country without a post office — against the judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt’-was supposed to take off. 
 
- This didn’t go down well with ABVP members, who protested against the event, demanding expulsion of the organisers. 
 
- A disciplinary enquiry was taken up by the university administration. The administration claimed the organisers went ahead with the event without permission. 
 
- A protest march was also carried out and ABVP members accused JNU students of shouting anti-India slogans. A video also appeared in which students were heard shouting slogans like ‘Kashmir ki azadi se, bharat ki barbadi tak, jangh rahegi jari’. 
 
- Now, ABVP members and JNU students are at loggerheads. In the face-off, JNU students say they did not shout any anti-national slogans. 
 
- A sedition case against unknown students was registered at Vasant Kunj (North) police station and the university also barred eight students from academic activity pending an enquiry. 
 
- JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on sedition charges and ordered to three-day police custody. 
 
- Students of JNU gave a shutdown call and #JNUShutdown started trending everywhere, demanding Kumar’s release. JNU teachers also joined the students in boycotting classes. 
 
- On February 14, the Patiala House saw violence as a mob, wearing lawyer’s robe, slapped and kicked supporters of Kanhaiya Kumar. Journalists and students bore the brunt of the violence. 
 - Over 400 journalists had taken out a procession after mediapersons were attacked by lawyers at the <keyword id="286287" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Patiala-court">Patiala Court</keyword>. The Supreme Court had slammed unruly behaviour of the lawyers and ordered that both the clients and media persons should be given security in the premises of the courts. 
 
 
 
- On February 17 also, violence was witnessed outside Patiala House Court when two groups of lawyers clashed with each other. Pro-India slogans were raised by lawyers who called themselves 'deshbhakts' and referred to those stopping them as 'deshdrohi'. 
 
- The group of lawyers that attacked journalists said that they cannot be termed 'goons'. Lawyers were heard chanting ‘Vande Mataram’. The Supreme Court was also informed that Kanhaiya Kumar was attacked in the court premises. 
 
- Some reports of stone-pelting at the Patiala House court also surfaced. 
 
- SC restricted the number reporters to five and two supporters of arrested students for the hearing. 
 
- Kanhaiya Kumar has been sent to judicial custody till March 02. Before his hearing, journalists were yet again attacked in the scuffle between two lawyer groups. 
 
- Doctor has been called to provide medical aid to Kanhaiya. 
 
- Kumar has maintained that he did not shout any anti-national slogans and few outsiders were involved in raising anti-India slogans.
