According to a report by Counterpoint Research, while the shipments have only increased by 3%, the value has recorded a 12% year-on-year growth to reach an all-time record for a single quarter. “The market is increasingly shifting toward value growth, fueled by a premiumisation trend, which, in turn, is supported by aggressive EMI offers and trade-ins,” said Prachir Singh, senior research analyst, Counterpoint Research. Xiaomi’s market share has remained flat and it continues to occupy the second position with a 16.7% market share in Q3 2024, up from 16.6% in Q3 2023. Samsung has recorded a decline in its market share, reporting a 15.8% market share in Q3 2024, down from 17.2% recorded in Q3 2023. Oppo holds the fourth spot, with a significant increase in market share, from 9.8% in Q3 2023 to 13.4% in Q3 2024. Indian smartphone shipments up 3% in Q3 – Vivo leads the market but Samsung wins the value game

The Comptroller and Auditor General (<keyword id="19900713" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CAG" source="keywords">CAG</keyword>) has asked the <keyword id="19900485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Ministry" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Finance Ministry" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Finance Ministry">Finance Ministry</keyword> to identify <keyword id="22837132" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="high-risk-taxpayers" source="keywords">high risk taxpayers</keyword> in the <keyword id="20981418" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST-composition-scheme" source="keywords">GST composition scheme</keyword> on a periodical basis and verify from other sources, including third parties, their declared <keyword id="22837745" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="value-of-sales" source="keywords">value of sales</keyword> to check <keyword id="20121097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-evasion" source="keywords">tax evasion</keyword>. Based on an analysis of 8.66 lakh composition taxpayers under the central jurisdiction between 2019-20 to 2021-22 fiscals, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) found that a significant number of <keyword id="19951327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gst" source="keywords">GST</keyword> taxpayers have a high risk of crossing the <keyword id="22837744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="turnover-threshold" source="keywords">turnover threshold</keyword> for composition levy scheme (CLS). These high risk taxpayers were identified by audit from the data contained in GST returns viz. GSTR-4A, GSTR-7 along with third party data sources such as IT returns, 'Vahan' database etc. The GST composition scheme is available to taxpayers whose aggregate turnover, in the preceding financial year, has not exceeded Rs 1.5 crore. For taxpayers in special category states, this limit is Rs 75 lakh. The CAG said two major risk areas in respect of CLS taxpayers are under-declaration of the 'value of outward supply' by the taxpayers to continue in the scheme; and non-fulfillment of eligibility conditions for availing CLS. The audit also observed that there were certain CLS taxpayers who were continuing in the Scheme despite not fulfilling the eligibility criteria prescribed in the Act and the Rules, and a substantial number of CLS taxpayers were not discharging their obligatory responsibilities of filing returns and payment of tax under reverse charge. "The Ministry should identify high risk taxpayers in the CLS on a periodical basis using a risk-based approach and verify their declared value of outward supply from other sources including third parties to minimize the possibility of misuse by ineligible persons," the CAG said in a report tabled in Parliament recently. The official auditor also suggested that the Finance Ministry may develop a system of identifying ineligible taxpayers and take action to exclude them from the CLS in order to prevent misuse of the intended benefits of the scheme.

India's refurbished smartphone market witnesses accelerated growth

The Mahindra Group company posted a net profit of Rs 493.9 crore in the year-ago period, according to an exchange filing. Revenue rose by 3.49 per cent to Rs 13,313.2 crore in the second quarter of 2024-25 compared to Rs 12,863.9 crore in the same quarter of 2023-24. "Other income includes gain on sale of property of Rs 4,502 million which comprises of freehold land and its related buildings along with the furniture &amp; fixtures sold for a consideration of Rs 5,350 million, receivable over a period of four years along with interest of 8.2 per cent p.a," the company filing said. Sequentially, net profit rose by 46.81 per cent and revenue by 2.36 per cent. "We continue to progress on our strategic improvement efforts even as the overall IT services industry has remained soft. "We have focused on strengthening client relationships and expanding the partner ecosystem while maintaining a sharp focus on operational excellence through project Fortius, which has resulted in an expansion of margins for the third sequential quarter," Tech Mahindra CEO Mohit Joshi said. The CEO unveiled Project Fortius in April, a three-year plan to achieve a 15 per cent operating margin with a focus on organic growth. "This quarter we see consistent performance around increasing deal wins, <keyword id="19965932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-growth" source="keywords">revenue growth</keyword>, cost optimisation and steady free cash flow generation as we continue our journey towards FY27 stated targets. The overall <keyword id="762866" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Passenger-vehicle" source="Orion">passenger vehicle</keyword> (PV) registrations last month stood at 3,09,053 units, as compared to 3,23,720 units in August 2023. "Even with the arrival of the <keyword id="19894908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Festive-season" source="keywords">festive season</keyword>, the market remains under significant strain... Inventory levels have reached alarming levels, with stock days now stretching to 70-75 days and inventory totalling 7.8 lakh vehicles, valued at an alarming Rs 77,800 crore," Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) President Manish Raj Singhania said in a statement. Rather than responding to the situation, PV Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) continue to increase dispatches to dealers on a month-on-month basis, further exacerbating the issue, he added. "FADA urgently calls upon all banks and NBFCs to intervene and immediately control funding to dealers with excessive inventory," Singhania said, adding that dealers must also act swiftly to stop taking on additional stock to protect their financial health. The OEMs, too, must recalibrate their supply strategies without delay, or the industry faces a potential crisis from this inventory overload, he said. "If this aggressive push of excess stock continues unchecked, the <keyword id="23047448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-retail-ecosystem" source="keywords">auto retail ecosystem</keyword> could face severe disruption," Singhania said. Commercial vehicle registrations saw a 6 per cent year-on-year dip in August, while tractor retail sales also witnessed a drop of 11 per cent as compared to the year-ago period. Two-wheeler sales, however, increased 6 per cent year-on-year to 13,38,237 units in August, as compared to 12,59,140 units in the same month last year, on the back of improved stock availability and the onset of the festive season, Singhania said. Three-wheeler retail sales also increased by 2 per cent to 1,05,478 units last month, as compared to 1,03,782 units in the year-ago period. Overall registrations last month saw an increase of 3 per cent year-on-year at 18,91,499 units, as against 18,38,501 units in August last year. On business outlook in the near term, FADA said it remains cautiously optimistic. While the festive season and improved rural demand present promising opportunities for growth, ongoing weather uncertainties and high inventory levels may temper the overall recovery, it stated. To navigate these challenges, strategic inventory management and targeted marketing initiatives will be crucial in maximising festive sales and mitigating risks from adverse weather conditions, it added.
