New Delhi, The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> appreciated 3 paise to 83.37 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, amid sustained inflow of foreign funds and bullish sentiment in the domestic equity market. An upward movement in crude oil prices, however, weighed on the Indian currency, according to forex traders. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.39 against the dollar and rose to 83.37, up 3 paise from its previous close. On Friday, the rupee depreciated 4 paise to close at 83.40 against the US dollar. Gaurang Somaiya, forex and bullion analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, said that investors will keep a close eye on monetary policy decisions from <keyword id="6356435" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="Orion">US Federal Reserve</keyword> and other central banks to be announced this week. "... the commentary from the (US Fed) Governor will be important to watch and gauge a view for the major crosses. Today, volatility could remain low as no major economic data is expected to be released from the US. We expect the USD-INR (spot) to trade sideways and quote in range of 83.20 and 83.50," Somaiya added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.03 per cent higher at 103.66. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.59 per cent to USD 76.29 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex breached the 70,000-level for the first time on Monday and was trading 198.72 points or 0.28 per cent higher at 70,024.32 points. The broader NSE Nifty also jumped 39.70 points or 0.19 per cent at 21,009.10 points. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Friday as they bought shares worth Rs 3,632.30 crore, according to exchange data. Mumbai, The rupee appreciated 7 paise to settle at 83.30 (provisional) against the US dollar on Friday, following positive cues from equity markets and strong domestic macroeconomic data. Forex analysts said easing crude oil prices in the international markets also favoured the local currency. Global crude price retreated from the level of USD 84 to USD 80 per barrel as oil-producing countries' grouping OPEC+ agreed not to reduce output in 2024, they added. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened stronger at 83.29 against the dollar and traded between the peak of 83.25 and the lowest level of 83.36 against the American currency intra-day. It finally settled at 83.30 (provisional) against the greenback, registering a gain of 7 paise over the previous close. The rupee settled 5 paise lower at 83.37 against the dollar on Thursday. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.19 per cent lower at 103.30 on Friday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures declined 0.23 per cent to USD 80.67 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex surged 492.75 points, or 0.74 per cent, to settle at 67,481.19 points. The Nifty advanced 134.75 points, or 0.67 per cent, to 20,267.90 points. A monthly survey on Friday said India's manufacturing sector continued with its robust performance in November. The seasonally adjusted S&amp;P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to 56 last month from the eight-month low of 55.5 recorded in October. Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital market on Thursday as they purchased shares worth Rs 8,147.85 crore, according to exchange data. Also, another data released simultaneously showed that the output of eight key infrastructure sectors jumped 12.1 per cent in October 2023 against 0.7 per cent expansion in the year-ago period. The S&amp;P 500 rose 2.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day up a whopping 3.5%.But even as prices soar, it's important not to get caught up in the mania beyond your normal risk tolerance, warns Morningstar Senior US Market Strategist Dave Sekera."Don't let any of these dire headlines that you may see here in the short term dissuade you from your long-term investment objectives," Sekera said in a webinar on Wednesday morning."Based on your risk tolerance, I probably wouldn't be making any changes here today," he continued. "And when you do make changes, make sure that you're only making changes when there's really a change in your underlying fundamentals and only make changes in your portfolio based on an informed analysis."While not letting near-term developments derail your plan for your portfolio is classic advice, Sekera said there's another reason to be extra cautious: stock valuations are at some of their most expensive levels in the last decade-and-a-half."When I look at the market today, it is trading, with today's bump, probably a 3% to 4% premium above fair value," he said. "Now, a lot of investors may say, 'Eh, 3% to 4% doesn't sound like that much from a market point of view,' but when I look at our valuations going back to 2010, less than 20% of the time have we seen the market trade at this much of a premium or more."While Morningstar has its own proprietary valuation measures, common metrics show the S&amp;P 500 is indeed expensive. Below is the Shiller cyclically-adjusted price-to-earnings ratio, for example. Even what some investors may view as negatives, like tariffs and the potential inflation that could result from them, may end up being a boon for stocks, he said."From the stock point of view, for those companies that have pricing power, that actually could end up helping them generate some additional earnings growth," he said.If Republicans end up taking a majority in the House of Representatives alongside their victory in the Senate and the White House, bullishness around more tax cuts may especially be well founded, according to Sekera.Still, markets are unpredictable, and investors shouldn't overreact to events like elections, as there are many variables at play beyond who is in political power — like starting valuations. Sekera pointed to a recent article from his colleague John Rekenthaler, where he highlighted that oil stocks have done much better under President Joe Biden than they did during Trump's first term, despite their differing attitudes toward the fossil fuel industry.That's again why Sekera is urging restraint, with the market being expensive. That is particularly true for growth stocks, which trade at a "very large premium," he said.Value stocks and small-caps are where Sekera sees the most opportunity — especially in the latter."The small-cap space, even with today's bump, it's still the most undervalued part of the market in our view," he said.
