A central bank digital currency (CBDC) can play a key role in providing access to digital payments without the requirement of a bank account and the access would be facilitated by a central bank-issued digital wallet, said industry stakeholders. The rollout of the e-rupee has been one of the most sought-after developments, since its announcement in the FY23 Union budget. Jaya <keyword id="3655832" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vaidhyanathan" source="Orion">Vaidhyanathan</keyword>, CEO of BCT Digital, said that the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>'s commencement of the pilot of the digital rupee marks appreciable progress in the journey toward digital payments. "The initiative has started in the low volume, high-value wholesale (interbank) segment from where learnings would be used to roll out reliable, built-to-scale retail payments," said Vaidhyanathan. The pilot announcement involves nine banks, including the SBI, the Bank of Baroda, the HDFC Bank, the Yes Bank, the Kotak Mahindra Bank, and the ICICI Bank, settling secondary market transactions in government securities, thereby reducing settlement risk and transaction costs. "A successful pilot and by extension, a full rollout of the digital rupee is expected to boost the reach of payment and financial needs of a wider category of users while ensuring transparency and low operational cost, and in this regard, it is encouraging to witness the RBI's support for innovation in creating a world-class, future-ready digital ecosystem," Vaidhyanathan stressed. India has one of the most technologically-evolved currencies in the world, and the e-rupee will put it in the forefront of true digital payments and improve financial inclusion. "The popularity of a digital rupee backed by the RBI will help bring legitimacy to other private digital currency like crypto. While we wait for clarity on how it is implemented, it is a positive step towards the acceptance of digital currency," said <keyword id="219963" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prashant-kumar" source="Orion">Prashant Kumar</keyword>, Founder and CEO at weTrade. According to Arjun Khazanchi, Co-Founder and Chief Legal and Strategy Officer at Rooba.Finance, the CBDC is an ambitious project where the government has been silently working to disrupt the financial system which has traditionally been opaque, cash dependent, and highly-inefficient. "The first use case is going to be for the secondary market transactions in government securities. This move may even boost liquidity, remove inefficient and redundant processes while reducing transaction costs. This would also enable increased transparency between the participants," Khazanchi contended. Through this, the government expects to also be able to reduce settlement risk which is one of the biggest use cases for Blockchain in financial markets. There are some fears regarding the privacy and overt control that the government may possess over the CBDCs. "However, some commentary may be over exaggerated with intent being presumed. Retail CBDC is still far away and would require a lot of education and technical training before being imposed," said Khazanchi. The CBDCs could help preserve the role of public fiat in monetary policy, securing central banks' role in protecting financial stability in their markets. It provides a public, digital alternative to cash and private digital money. "Public-private partnerships will be essential to the success of a CBDC launch, enabling central banks to leverage established infrastructure and client relationships. Such alliances will help central banks implement use cases aligned with end-user needs, complementing their gaps in capabilities and knowledge of consumption habits, particularly in a retail scenario," <keyword id="445" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sharma" source="Orion">Sharma</keyword> said. By engaging commercial banks and other private stakeholders (technology enablers, merchants, users) in the launch process, central banks will also foster a broader sense of ownership, manage fears of displacement, and increase the probability of successful adoption. Indian e-rupee to boost digital payments sans bank accounts, say industry stakeholders

For the first time, Californian city of Cupertino got a Indian-American woman as it Mayor. 
 <keyword id="3963500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="savita-vaidhyanathan">Savita Vaidhyanathan</keyword> was sworn-in as the Mayor of the city, which is famous for <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> headquarters. 
 
Vaidhyanathan is an MBA who worked as a high school Math teacher and an officer in a commercial bank as well as in non-profit management. 
 
"This is definitely a very momentous moment in my life," Vaidhyanathan told a packed house at community hall in Cupertino, 'The Mercury News' reported. 
 
Two days after taking charge, she issued her first proclamation as the Cupertino Mayor in education. 
 
Savita is the first Indian-American Mayor of Cupertino, which according to Forbes is one of the most educated small towns in the country with local public schools ranking highly. 
 
According to her campaign website, Savita has been a Cupertino resident for over 19 years and has been deeply involved in several community activities in the city. 
 
"I've had several congratulatory messages saying that I'm the first woman mayor of Indian-origin," said Savita. 
 
"Yes, I do take a lot of pride and prestige in that, but I do want to thank the residents of the city of Cupertino that voted me in not looking at ethnicity at all. Thank you for your trust in me, and maybe we did break that silicon ceiling and put a few more cracks in that glass ceiling," she said.

Rioters were pictured in the Capitol bearing Confederate banners, wearing far-right insignia, and chanting far-right slogans.At the heart of Carlson's persona is a challenge to those he portrays as smug liberal elites, who he claims have sought to disenfranchise ordinary Americans for decades. It's a stance that made him one of the defining conservative voices during the Trump years.But when applied to downplaying the threat of white nationalist violence, it's a view that has imperiled lucrative advertisement deals on his show.Back in August 2019, numerous advertisers abandoned Carlson's show after he claimed white supremacy was a "hoax" in the wake of a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, by a gunman who posted a white nationalist manifesto on social media before murdering 22 people.Matt Gertz, a researcher at the progressive media-monitoring group Media Matters, said Carlson's core narratives had a common strand and sought to play on fears about shadowy elites."Carlson's narrative is that white supremacists pose no significant threat, that those who argue otherwise are lying elites who are dividing the country in order to gain and retain power, and that the real targets are everyday Republicans like the viewers watching at home," he told Insider."He's stuck with that argument in spite of a rash of white supremacist violence, which he either ignores or lies about."<h2>Carlson mainstreams white nationalist rhetoric, say critics</h2>Siva Vaidhyanathan, a professor of media studies at the University of Virginia, said that since the '60s Republicans had sought to covertly appeal to the racist fears of white voters, but also broaden their appeal. It's a balancing act Fox News hosts have also long performed, he said.On the one hand, he said, Carlson was seeking to shield the <keyword id="107894" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Republican-Party">Republican Party</keyword> from claims that in the Trump era it became closely entangled with white nationalist extremism."Tucker Carlson is trying his best to repeat this mantra," Vaidhyanathan said. He's among the best-known conservative media voices in America, and clips of his show are widely shared on social media and covered by other news outlets, including Insider.As the raw shock of the Capitol attack fades, some conservatives are adopting Carlson's line that the violence was not a stark warning of the peril America faces from the threat of far-right extremism but has instead been exaggerated and distorted by liberals.Republican Sen. Ron Johnson in an interview on March 13 said he "never really felt threatened" by the Capitol rioters, whom he described as largely "people that love this country, that truly respect law enforcement, would never do anything to break a law."For Gertz, Carlson instead of moderating his rhetoric in the wake of January 6 is dialing it up as he seeks to continue building his huge audience.And it's a key factor, he said, holding the Republican Party back from attempting to seriously confront the threat from white nationalist extremism."He has created a clear disincentive for Republicans to join any effort to stem the growth of white supremacist violence, lest they provoke his wrath and the ire of his legions of fans," he said.

Siva Vaidhyanathan, the director of the Center for Media and Citizenship at University of Virginia, suggested in his book that Facebook uses casino-like techniques to keep users hooked on its platform, as <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2018/08/06/its-no-accident-that-facebook-is-so-addictive/">The Washington Post</a> reported. Sean Parker, the founding Facebook president and Napster cofounder, <a href="https://www.axios.com/sean-parker-unloads-on-facebook-2508036343.html">also said</a> at an Axios event that the social network was designed to "consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible."And although leaving Facebook has presented a few inconveniences, some former users say it's also taught them an important lesson: They don't need Facebook to stay in touch with the people that are truly important — even as the coronavirus pandemic is preventing people across the United States from socializing in person. "I'm not getting anything out of this anymore," Bradford said of her decision to leave Facebook. "They're doing everything through Facebook, and so sometimes I do get excluded because of it."It's unclear whether people who have deleted or deactivated their accounts tend to return to Facebook. For others, text messaging has become an easy and reliable way to keep in touch. Andreas Kielczynski has adopted a more creative approach to <keyword id="25293" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="texting">texting</keyword>. A 46-year-old digital marketing professional living in Hoboken, New Jersey, Kielczynski said he typically uses Apple's Messages app on his laptop and sometimes keeps between 30 and 40 messages open at a time. Instead of typing, he'll also sometimes recite short messages and send them as audio clips. And even though he's not on Facebook, he'll still occasionally use Facebook's Messenger app to contact certain people he can't reach otherwise."I use texting in kind of a strange way," said Kielczynski. "I'm not as much of a phone person as other people are. I'll always default to my laptop whenever possible."Long before the coronavirus pandemic made it impossible to see loved ones in person, ex-Facebook users had taken to alternative modes of communication to keep in touch. For some, like Kermisch in Minnesota, not being on Facebook has been a motivator to call contacts they haven't spoken to in a while."I said, 'Hey, you know what? I'm going to give them a call just to see how they're doing,'" Kermisch said.
