But, it’s usually only material objects even if that is from nearby stars and planets. <br /><br />The V404 Cygni black hole, on the other hand, seems to be dragging in space itself according to a team of researchers from the <a href="https://public.nrao.edu/news/black-hole-jets-rapid-wobble/">International Center for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR)</a> using the National Science Foundation’s Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA).<br /><br />

<br /><br />That material ends up in a rotating stream of material around the black hole called an accretion disk. The V404 Cygni black hole has a disk 10 million kilometers wide.<br /><br />As the disk inches closer to the black hole becoming denser and hotter, the black hole and inner parts of the disk start to launch material pieces away from the accretion disk in what scientists call a ‘wobble’. <br />

<br />This ‘wobble’ is supposed to be a steady stream of ejected material but in this case, the black hole is spitting out interjected blobs of plasma.<br /><br />In V404 Cygni’s case, the excessive speed of the wobble brings Einstein’s general theory of relativity into play which states that massive objects like black holes can distort space and time itself.<br /><br />

A black hole bigger than the sun is pulling on the fabric of space and time

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>For decades, astronomers have observed the space around black holes for the occasional flare of light, signaling that a cosmic feeding is underway.<p>In the past, it took highly sophisticated, expensive instruments to witness this exotic, rare black hole behavior - but, no longer.</p><p>On Thursday, a large team of more than 70 experts <a href="http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v529/n7584/full/nature16452.html">reported</a> that they had observed eruptions from a nearby black hole in visible light - the light we see with our eyes.</p><p>It's the first time that anyone has witnessed flickers of visible light from a black hole, which are very dense objects in space that have a gravitational grip so strong nothing can escape, including light.</p><p>While this makes black holes inherently invisible, we can still see the nourishing gas they feed on as it orbits around the black hole. Usually, the gas radiates in high-energy X-rays or gamma-rays, but now the team says it's possible to see black holes in visible light, as well.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLx1XbvvfIlc6yvK_ntyCIaMv7pAC4X96J&amp;v=R8bMGpMpd_U">video below</a>, which compiles images taken On June 23, 2015 from Rochester Institute of Technology's observatory, shows what a gobbling black hole looks like over the course of 3.5 hours:</p><p><div></div></p><p>"We find that activity in the vicinity of a black hole can be observed in optical light at low luminosity for the first time," Mariko Kimura, who is an astronomer at Kyoto University and lead author of the team's report published in the journal Nature, told <a href="http://space.com/">Space.com</a>. "These findings suggest that we can study physical phenomena that occur in the <a href="http://www.space.com/19339-black-holes-facts-explained-infographic.html">vicinity of the black hole</a> using moderate optical telescopes without high-spec X-ray or gamma-ray telescopes."</p><p>All it would take to spot the roiling-hot rumblings of this nearby black hole is a modest <a href="http://www.space.com/31532-black-hole-visible-light-telescope-discovery.html">20-cm telescope</a> - that means that the light-gathering component of your telescope, whether it's a mirror or lens, is 20 centimeters (about 7.8 inches) in diameter. That's well within the limits of telescopes <a href="http://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-news/types-of-telescopes/">you can purchase</a> for your backyard.</p><h2>An unfriendly neighbor</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>This particular black hole is lurking 7,800 light years from Earth and is 12 times more massive than our sun.<p>Last June, after 26 years of slumber, it underwent some exciting activity: it began eating, again.</p><p>The black hole is just one half of a two-body system called V404 Cygni, and, right now, it's slurping down strands of gas from its other half, which is a star similar in size to our sun. The last time it had a meal was back in 1989.</p><p>What's going on is that the black hole's gravitational grip attracts the star's gas, which falls into orbit around the black hole.</p><p>As it makes its way to the mouth of the monster, the gas speeds up, generating extreme heat. And similar to how the heated gas from the sun radiates light, we can see this heated gas in what's called an accretion disc around the black hole through telescopes.</p><p>But accretion discs don't usually radiate at constant brightness. Instead, they vary in brightness over time, sometimes erupting to tens of times brighter than average.</p><p>These changes in brightness, or what astronomers call changes in magnitude, can sometimes occur over the span of a single hour. For this black hole, the team witnessed changes over anywhere from 100 seconds to 150 minutes.</p><p>"The observations made on this target were immediately exciting," Bill Goff, who is a member of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) and part of the team led by Kimura, said in an AAVSO press release. "Seeing changes greater than one magnitude [a change in one magnitude is equal to a change of <a href="http://www.stargazing.net/david/constel/magnitude.html">2.5 times</a> in brightness] in less than an hour ... was a wonder to see. A groundbreaking first in astronomy found that black holes can be spotted with backyard telescopes

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Lurking 8,000 light years from Earth is a black hole 12 times more massive than our sun. It's been peacefully sleeping for 26 years.</p><p>But on June 15, it woke up.</p><p>Now, scientists around the world are using highly sophisticated instruments to learn as much as they can about this mysterious beast of nature before the black hole returns to its slumber, which will be soon.</p><p>Black holes are very dense, massive objects in space that have an immensely powerful gravitational field that traps anything and everything that comes too close, including light. But on occasion they'll spit out material as well as suck it in.</p><p>On <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/nasa-missions-monitor-a-waking-black-hole">June 15</a>, one of NASA's satellites picked up a torrent of x-rays all coming from a single source: the black hole.</p><p>"Relative to the lifetime of space observatories, these black hole eruptions are quite rare," said Neil Gehrels, the principal investigator for Swift, the NASA satellite that first identified the eruption in a <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/nasa-missions-monitor-a-waking-black-hole">NASA press release</a>. "So when we see one of them flare up, we try to throw everything we have at it, monitoring across the spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays."</p><h2>A deadly companion</h2><p>This black hole is just one half of a two-body system called V404 Cygni. Its partner is a star slightly smaller than our sun, and it's been nourishing the black hole for at least 77 years. The x-rays that astronomers observed on June 15 were the heated guts from the companion star that had spiraled into the mouth of the black hole.</p><p>When black holes in binary systems, like V404 Cygni, feed, they do so by gravitationally attracting a single thread of gas from the star. The black hole is 12 times more massive than its companion and therefore has a much stronger gravitational grip which slowly pulls gas from the star as the star orbits around it, like in the animation below:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>As the gas gets pulled in, it orbits around the black hole, forming a disc. The closer the gas gets to the black hole, the stronger gravitational force it feels and so the faster it moves, heating up to searing-hot temperatures. When the gas reaches temperatures of more than <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-ray_astronomy">1.7 million degrees Fahrenheit</a>, it emits a jet of high-energy particles, which satellites like NASA's Swift instrument then detect - albeit 8,000 years later because of the time it takes light to travel from the V404 Cygni to Earth.</p><p>But there isn't always a steady stream of gas falling into the black hole, which is why it takes such long naps in between feedings.</p><p>That <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">disc has two regions: and inner, hot region, and an outer cool region. You need a lot of gas to provide enough pressure and push to cross this barrier, which takes time to generate. Once the black hole has consumed all of the gas in the inner region, which it does in a few days, it has to wait for more.</span></p><h2>A once-in-a-professional-lifetime opportunity</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>V404 Cygni's black hole has erupted before.</p><p>Astronomers first took interest in this black hole more than 77 years ago, when they initially detected a strong burst of light from it in 1938.
