All the manufacturing activities at the Indian Pharma company, Marion Biotech Pvt Ltd, have been stopped following allegations by Uzbekistan that at least 18 children died in the country after consuming the medicine. Uzbekistan cough syrup issue: Manufacturing at Marion Biotech stopped after probe

Indian Pharma company <keyword id="15908017" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="marion-biotech" source="Orion">Marion Biotech</keyword> Pvt Ltd has halted the production of cough syrup following allegations by Uzbekistan that at least 18 children died in the country after consuming the medicine. A joint inspection of the manufacturer's Noida facility was carried out by the teams of the Uttar Pradesh Drug Control Department and CDSCO. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) is in contact with the national drug regulator of Uzbekistan regarding the matter. "Immediately on receipt of the information, joint inspection of the NOIDA facility of the manufacturer, Marion Biotech, was carried out by UP Drug Control and CDSCO team and further action as appropriate would be initiated based on the inspection report," said the Union health ministry on Thursday. The samples of the cough syrup have been taken from the manufacturing premises and sent to Regional Drugs Testing Laboratory (RDTL), Chandigarh for testing. Meanwhile, Marion Biotech Pharma company has said that it has sent samples of the said cough syrup for testing and has also halted the production of the product. Hasan, the Legal Head of Marion Biotech, expressed grief over the deaths on behalf of the company and said that an inquiry into the matter was being conducted by the government. He added that samples were collected and action would be taken on the basis of the report. Marion Biotech is a licensed manufacturer and holds a license for manufacturing Dok1 <keyword id="26842" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="max" source="Orion">Max</keyword> syrup and <keyword id="50839" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tablet" source="Orion">Tablet</keyword> for export purposes granted by <keyword id="282629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="drugs-controller" source="Orion">Drugs Controller</keyword>, Uttar Pradesh. Uzbekistan's health ministry, on Tuesday, said that 18 children suffering from an acute respiratory disease died after taking excessive doses of cough syrup Dok 1 Max, manufactured by Marion Biotech. Experts say that cough syrups sometimes contain "unacceptable levels" of Di<keyword id="7488410" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ethylene-glycol" source="Orion">ethylene Glycol</keyword> and Ethylene Glycol. Indian drugmaker Marion Biotech halts manufacture of cough syrup, probe underway

India's drug regulator has given approval for a study to be conducted by the <keyword id="93589" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Christian-Medical-College">Christian Medical College</keyword> (CMC), Vellore on mixing of COVID-19 vaccines <keyword id="9485939" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="covaxin">Covaxin</keyword> and Covishield, official sources said on Wednesday. An expert panel of the <keyword id="170943" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Drugs-Standard-Control-Organisation">Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation</keyword> (CDSCO) on July 29 had recommended granting permission for conducting the study. The trial will involve 300 healthy volunteers. "The aim of the study is to assess the feasibility on whether a person can be given two different vaccine shots -- one each of Covishield and Covaxin -- to complete the inoculation course," a source said. Separately, a recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) involving 98 people, 18 of whom had inadvertently received Covishield as the first dose and Covaxin as the second in <keyword id="413944" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="uttar">Uttar</keyword> Pradesh, showed that combining these two COVID-19 vaccines elicited better immunogenicity than two doses of the same vaccine. The study also found that immunisation with combination of Covishield and Covaxin was safe and the adverse effects were also found to be similar when compared to the same dose regimen. DCGI approves study on mixing of Covaxin and Covishield  COVID-19 doses, say sources

As India reopened after two dreadful years of Covid-19, the country saw a re-emergence of infectious diseases and a new variant of the hand-foot-and-mouth disease, also known as <keyword id="13885432" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tomato-flu" source="Orion">tomato flu</keyword>, created quite a scare across many states. <keyword id="6384473" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tomato" source="Orion">Tomato</keyword> flu is a rare viral infection that could be a new variant of the viral hand-foot-and-mouth disease, a common infectious disease targeting mostly children aged one to five years. Initially, <keyword id="28504" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kerala" source="Orion">Kerala</keyword>, <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword> and Odisha reported tomato flu cases. Tomato flu was first identified in the Kollam district of Kerala, on May 6, 2022. The Kerala Health Department took precautionary measures to monitor the spread of the viral infection and prevent its spread in other parts of India. In September, Assam reported over 100 cases of tomato flu, sounding an alarm for the state health department. The maximum number of cases were reported from two schools in Dibrugarh district. The <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> and Tamil Nadu governments had also issued advisories on tomato flu. Though the tomato flu disease is not seen as life-threatening, healthcare experts warned that any further spread of the disease may hit schools again after the Covid-19 pandemic. Health officials also said that the chances of adults contracting the disease are feeble. Bhawuk Dhir, dermatologist at Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, said that this is a clear sign of heading towards an era of viral diseases. "Clearly, we are heading towards an era of viral diseases with the rampage of Covid-19, Monkeypox and now hand-foot-and-mouth disease -- as was predicted by various researchers in the past," Dhir had told IANS. "Tomato flu is caused by Coxsackie virus A16 (a non-polio enterovirus), which is highly contagious and spreads through secretions from the nose, throat, fluid from the blisters and fecal-oral route," Dhir added. In most cases, it is a mild self-limiting viral disease and requires supportive care for recovery. A few may develop complications such as meningitis and disseminated infection. The Union Health Ministry also issued guidelines on Tomato flu, underlining that its treatment is similar to other viral infections like isolation, rest, plenty of fluids and hot water sponge for relief from irritation and rashes. Supportive therapy of paracetamol for fever and body ache and other symptomatic treatments are required. "Tomato flu is a self-limiting infectious disease as the signs and symptoms resolve after a few days," the ministry guidelines said. No antiviral drugs or vaccines are available for the treatment or prevention of Tomato Flu. "The term tomato fever was used because of the red-coloured blisters which resemble a tomato. A similar outbreak was reported in Kerala in 2007," according to Dhir. Although not many new cases are being reported now, the best way to prevent this disease is maintaining proper hygiene and sanitisation of the surrounding environment as well as preventing the infected child from sharing toys, clothes, food, or other items with other non-infected children.

A report by the <keyword id="67999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> (CPCB) has found that the air quality of holy city Varanasi is most polluted among the 42 cities monitored recently. Following this, the Director of IIT Kanpur, Manindra Agarwal told the media that the state government has asked the civil aviation ministry for its approval regarding artificial rains since the area where artificial rains are required need cloud cover. IIT Kanpur was given a grant of Rs 15 lakh from the state government to experiment on the option of artificial rains. The scientists have finished their experiments and are ready to execute. The UP residents therefore will soon see airplanes flying over Lucknow to create artificial rains to bring down the pollution levels. IIT-K has even agreed to modify its six-seater Cessna aircraft to load it with salt for being dropped on the high altitude 'supercooled' clouds. “The measure will definitely reduce air pollution levels. Aerospace, civil engineering and industrial management engineering departments are working on this project,” said Agarwal. How far will this help bring the pollution levels down in Uttar Pradesh, and the rest of the country is being questioned by human rights organisations across India.

How IIT Kanpur scientists are planning to curb pollution in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, The Uttar Pradesh government has said that all <keyword id="37180" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="schools">schools</keyword> for <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> of <keyword id="6405739" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Classes">Classes</keyword> 9, 10, 11, and 12 will run in a single shift from Tuesday. The Classes will be run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for all educational boards as per the notice. Schools across the country were shut due to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. The schools and colleges in Uttar Pradesh were reopened on October 19 in two shifts, with several safety guidelines set into place by the state government and the health department. However, most schools recorded abysmally low attendance as many students preferred to stay away. Safety measures like strict social distancing, thermal checks at entry points, wearing of masks and face covers, and regular washing of hands have been made mandatory for all the students and staff attending regular classes in schools. Additional Chief Secretary, <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="education">Education</keyword>, Aradhana Shukla, said, "Keeping in mind the weather conditions, it has been decided to allow schools to run in one shift." An order to this effect was issued on Monday night. The representatives from unaided private schools had met Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, who also holds the education portfolio, and had sought permission to hold classes in one shift only.
