In Punjab, the Congress pointed out that celebrations for the 555th Prakash Parv of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji are scheduled for November 15, with religious observances starting on November 13. These festivals are expected to draw significant portions of the electorate, particularly in rural areas. The EC has previously demonstrated flexibility to prioritise voter participation by adjusting poll dates to avoid clashes with religious or cultural events. "We need to educate <keyword id="21866171" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-travellers" source="keywords">global travellers</keyword> about the attractions in Uttar Pradesh and make UP known more and above the iconic <keyword id="20045918" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taj-Mahal" source="keywords">Taj Mahal</keyword> in Agra," said Rahul Wadhwa who leads CAL India Tours and Travel. He estimated a growth of 10 per cent across the UP travel agency business. Further, Wadhwa said his Agra-based travel business was seeking collaborations globally to tie up travel arrangements and promote the state as well as India as a tourist destination. There are a growing number of five-star hotels and continuing investments in highways that make travelling across India, including UP, as seamless as the tourists expect, said the <keyword id="20181038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="travel-industry" source="keywords">travel industry</keyword> veteran of 33 years. Technology-wise, the travel industry has also done well, moving away from the telex-based phone-call booked communications to speedier online-offline as well as mobile phone app-led bookings and arrangements for globe trotters. This substantial disbursement, announced by the <keyword id="19900485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Ministry" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Finance Ministry" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Finance Ministry">Finance Ministry</keyword> on Thursday, includes an advance instalment in addition to the standard monthly release, effectively doubling the usual allocation of Rs 89,086.50 crore for October 2024. The largest share of the funds went to Uttar Pradesh, which received Rs 31,962 crore. Bihar followed with Rs 17,921 crore, while Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal received Rs 13,987 crore and Rs 13,404 crore, respectively. This allocation underscores the central government's commitment to ensuring that states have the financial resources needed to stimulate development, especially during a period of increased economic activity ahead of the festive season. Among the other states, Andhra Pradesh received Rs 7,211 crore, Tamil Nadu received Rs 7,268 crore, and Gujarat received Rs 6,197 crore. In the Northeast, Meghalaya was allocated Rs 1,367 crore, Tripura Rs 1,261 crore, and Manipur Rs 1,276 crore. The Finance Ministry noted that the decision to release these funds was aimed at empowering states to ramp up <keyword id="20148453" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-spending" source="keywords">capital spending</keyword> and support essential welfare and developmental projects. This accelerated funding is intended to boost critical <keyword id="19936648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="infrastructure-projects" source="keywords">infrastructure projects</keyword> such as road construction, public facilities, and other state-led development initiatives. This announcement follows a high-level meeting involving the Finance Secretary and the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, emphasising the government’s commitment to sustaining <keyword id="19900794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-growth" source="keywords">economic growth</keyword> through state-level investments. By providing the funds ahead of schedule, the Centre aims to ensure that states are equipped to meet the demands of the festive season, while also fostering sustained growth and long-term development. The Ministry emphasised that this tax devolution aligns with the recommendations of the Finance Commission, which plays a crucial role in determining the distribution of tax revenue between the Union and states. With Indian stock markets touching new highs, people from states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal are participating in share markets actively, highlighted a latest report by the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The report highlighted that these three states are now leading in terms of the number of investors actively participating in the stock market, after Maharashtra and Gujarat which are traditional base of investors in the country. Maharashtra continues to lead the country in registered stock market investors, with 1.7 crore investors, making up 16.8 per cent of the total investor base, according to the National Stock Exchange. Uttar Pradesh holds the second spot, surpassing 1 crore investors in April and reaching 1.1 crore by August and holds 11.1 per cent of the total investors. Gujarat has figured at third place with 88.5 lakh investors (8.7 per cent), West Bengal with 59 lakh (5.8 per cent), and Rajasthan with 57.8 lakh (5.7 per cent). Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal combined now accounts for almost one out of every four investors in the stock markets. In its report, the NSE stated, "It is also interesting to note that the top five states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and West Bengal now comprise nearly half (48 pc) of all investors in the country." This data highlights the significant role these states are playing in shaping the overall stock market landscape in India. The report also revealed an emerging trend, the North and East India region is showing the highest growth in <keyword id="22721561" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-investor-registrations" source="keywords">new investor registrations</keyword>. Over the past year, these regions have added a substantial number of new investors, further broadening the investor base across the country. Interestingly, the report also noted that states outside the top 10 now make up 27 per cent, up from 23 per cent in FY20. Last month the Indian stock markets achieved a significant milestone as the total number of <keyword id="22721559" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="registered-investors" source="keywords">registered investors</keyword> in the country crossed the 10 crore mark in August. This achievement highlighted the growing interest and participation of the Indian population in the <keyword id="19949641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-markets" source="keywords">equity markets</keyword>, marking a momentous shift in the <keyword id="21127208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-landscape" source="keywords">financial landscape</keyword>. The data also highlighted that the journey from 9 crore to 10 crore registered investors took just five months, underscoring the rapid pace at which new investors are entering the market, meaning that an additional one crore investors joined the markets in a remarkably short period. The Indian stock market took over 25 years to reach its first crore of registered investors. Fourteen bodies were retrieved from the accident site in Nepal where a passenger bus bearing <keyword id="19894922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh" source="keywords">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> number plate plunged into a river in Nepal's Tanahun district, a spokesperson for Nepal's Armed Police Force said on Friday. Kumar Neupane, Spokesperson for the Armed Police Force in Nepal said that 14 bodies have been retrieved from the river. Earlier today, a passenger bus bearing Uttar Pradesh number plate and with at least 40 people onboard plunged into the Marsyangdi river in the Tanahun district, Nepal police said. "The bus bearing number plate UP FT 7623 plunged into the river and is lying on the bank of the river," DSP Deepkumar Raya from the District Police Office Tanahun confirmed to over phone. As per the official, the bus was on its way to Kathmandu from Pokhara when the mishap took place. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner said, "Regarding the Nepal incident We are establishing contact to find out if any person from Uttar Pradesh was on the bus." Sub-Divisonal Magistrate Maharajganj is being sent to Nepal and the Additional District Magistrate of Maharajganj will coordinate, the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner said. Further details are awaited in the incident. Indian passenger bus plunges into Nepal river, 14 bodies retrieved

However, despite this surge, the number of active participants remains relatively low compared to the total registered users, though it has been rising steadily since March. According to a report by the National Stock Exchange (NSE), out of the 9.7 crore <keyword id="22721559" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="registered-investors" source="keywords">registered investors</keyword>, only 1.5 crore are active. The report highlights that active investors on the NSE surged by 13.9 % month-on-month, reaching 1.5 crore in June. This marks the third consecutive month of growth in active market users. The NSE report shows that the number of individuals trading at least once a month grew by 13.1% in June, compared to May, reflecting a strong trend in <keyword id="21427519" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-participation" source="keywords">market participation</keyword>. "The number of individual investors who traded at least once in June increased across regions. This individual investor base rose by 13.9 % month-on-month to reach 1.5 crore in June 2024," the report noted. It also points out that there has been a steady rise in active domestic investors after a decline earlier in the year, particularly in March. As of June, the number of active domestic market investors on the NSE from the top 10 states--Maharashtra, Gujarat, <keyword id="19894922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="keywords">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana--stood at 1.2 crore. Maharashtra led the increase in June, significantly contributing to the new and active investor base in the stock markets. "Following a decline in March 2024, the count of individuals who traded at least once has been on a steady rise, increasing by 13.1% month-on-month to 1.2 crore for the top 10 states in June 2024," the NSE report stated. The report also noted a year-on-year growth in the number of registered investors. The total number of registered users reached 9.7 crore at the end of June, up from approximately 7.6 crore the previous year. "The total number of registered investors stood at 9.7 crore at the end of June, up from around 7.6 crore at the same time last year," the report added. Region-wise, Southern and Eastern India saw significant increases, with active investor bases rising by 16.8 % month-on-month to 29.1 lakh and 15.6 % month-on-month to 16.7 lakh, respectively. The Northern and Western regions also experienced growth, with investor bases reaching 55 lakh and 56 lakh, respectively, in June 2024. <h2>Nifty on the rise</h2>The <keyword id="20641216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty-50" source="keywords">Nifty 50</keyword> index began on April 22, 1996, with a starting value of 1136.28 points and has recently crossed 25,000 points, marking a growth of nearly 22 times. In less than four years from its inception, the index climbed to 1592.90 points, showcasing early signs of its potential. By December 2, 2004, just before the start of 2005, the Nifty 50 achieved a historic milestone by crossing the 2000-point mark, setting the stage for further growth amid challenges. The global financial crisis of 2008 tested the resilience of the Indian stock market. At the start of the year, the Nifty 50 was trading around 6,300 points, but by the end of 2008, it had plummeted to 2,500 points, reflecting the global economic turmoil. Despite this setback, India's <keyword id="20172097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-sector" source="keywords">financial sector</keyword> demonstrated remarkable strength. By December 31, 2009, less than a year after the crisis, the Nifty 50 had rebounded to 5,200 points. In September 2010, the Nifty index again reached the 6,000-point mark after a gap of over two years, marking a significant recovery. As 2014 began, the index was around 6,300 points, but by the end of the year, it had surged past 8,000 points, fuelled by optimism surrounding the new single-party majority government at the centre. A major milestone was achieved on July 25, 2017, when the Nifty 50 hit the 10,000-point mark, coinciding with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), a landmark reform in the Indian indirect tax structure. The market faced another significant challenge with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. The Nifty 50, which had been trading around 12,000 points in January 2020, fell dramatically to about 7,500 points by March 2020. This sharp decline was one of the most significant losses for the index in a short span. Nevertheless, the resilience of the Indian stock market was evident, as the Nifty 50 began its recovery as the pandemic subsided. The recovery was swift and robust. By 2021, the Nifty 50 surpassed the 15,000-point mark, and the rally continued unabated. On August 1, 2024, the index achieved a new milestone, reaching 25,000 points. The Nifty 50 hit the 20,000-point mark for the first time on September 11, 2023, and took 221 trading days from that level to reach 25,000 points on August 1, 2024. This journey from the early days of 1136.28 points to the recent milestone of 25,000 points underscores the evolution of the Indian financial sector and its integral role in the country's economic development. Commenting on the Nifty's journey, Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert, stated that "the journey of the Nifty reflects the growth of the Indian economy and various sectors. When the Nifty was created in the mid-1990s, the top companies were very different, from very different sectors. In these three years, IT, Pharma, Real Estate, Autoancillaries, and Telecom have emerged as new sectors with significant shares in the Nifty market cap. Going ahead, in the decades to come, there will again be a sectoral rotation as e-commerce, artificial intelligence, fintech and health tech companies rise to prominence."
