Backlash has started, as the cashless trend leaves out lower-income customers who may not have a bank account. As of last year, an estimated<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/alanmcintyre/2017/05/10/banks-need-to-focus-on-a-new-customer-the-unbanked/#76f7f3ce59c8"> 15.6 million people in the US</a> do not have a bank account.Philadelphia recently banned stores from choosing not to accept cash. "Most of the people who don't have credit tend to be lower income, minority, immigrants. It just seemed to me, if not intentional, at least a form of discrimination," Philadelphia City Councilman William Greenlee <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/philadelphia-is-first-u-s-city-to-ban-cashless-stores-11551967201?mod=hp_lead_pos5">told the Wall Street Journal</a>. Massachusetts has already banned stores from rejecting cash as payment. Lawmakers in New York City and New Jersey are considering similar measures. A ban like this will predominantly affect chic lunch spots like Sweetgreen, but also Amazon's nascent physical store footprint. Customers can just swipe their app and go. The store's cameras and sensors will see what you take and charge you accordingly.An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment to Business Insider.Amazon had reportedly expressed concern about the law in Philadelphia, telling the city's department of commerce "several times" that it would not open an Amazon Go store in the city if the law passed, <a href="https://www.philly.com/business/retail/amazon-go-philadelphia-cashless-store-ban-20190215.html">according to the Philadelphia Inquirer</a>. The new law does allow for a store to use only app-based transactions, but only if a paid membership is required to shop there. Philadelphia banned stores from refusing to accept cash, and it's a troubling trend for Amazon

Perry sold his startup Kit for an undisclosed amount.</li><li>Perry said his reasons for selling the company came down to three main criteria: alignment, company culture, and his belief in his new boss.</li></ul> After spending nearly a decade as an entrepreneur, Michael Perry never imagined working for someone else.His last company, Kit, made a popular digital assistant for small business owners selling goods on platforms like Etsy and Amazon. It let them email their customers, run ads on Facebook, generate marketing reports, and more, all through text messages.In 2016, Kit had over 2,000 subscribers globally and was raking in $30,000 a month in revenue - revenue that was growing 20% to 30% month over month, according to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/pictures/hedk45ldh/michael-perry-29/#44e9ce185251">Forbes' 30 Under 30</a> list, which named Perry among the best and boldest young leaders."I never envisioned getting acquired. I was on a pipe dream of building a publicly traded company myself, as all naïve founders are," Perry told Business Insider.That same year, Kit sold for an undisclosed amount to e-commerce software company Shopify. Perry decided to double-back on his commitment never to sell the startup, and his reasons for doing so could offer some insight for founders who are considering the same.<h2>Reasons to sell</h2>Founded in 2004, Shopify makes software that helps small business owners run their shops across a variety of platforms, including web, social media, and brick-and-mortar. Three years after going public, this lesser-known tech giant bhas a market cap of $16 billion.Overall, Perry felt a sense of alignment between his mission and the goals of Shopify."It came down to this realization that we were really trying to accomplish the same thing," said Perry, who now works as director of product and marketing at Shopify, where he continues to run Kit as a part of the platform. Early in the process, Perry sat down with Shopify founder and CEO Tobi Lütke."I kind of just left there being like, 'This person is significantly smarter than I am," Perry said."He's like a really really hyper-intelligent guy and he has these eyes - they're like the bluest eyes in the entire world - and when he talks you're kind of transfixed," he added.Piercing blue eyes aside, Lütke was building a company that not only shared Perry's goal of helping entrepreneurs be successful, but it treated employees exceptionally well, according to Perry. The Ottowa-based Shopify provides perks from catered lunches to unlimited vacation time to remote work; plus, the company has an in-house executive coaching team for fostering personal and professional development.Shopify employees receive a spending budget each year to build the skills they want to level up. In the past, workers have taken improv classes to improve their presentation skills, learned a language, and traveled to Art Basel art festivals to find inspiration.The culture is why "even though we're a quiet, sleepy $18 billion company," Perry said, speaking of the company's market cap at the time of the interview. A founder who said he would never sell his startup reveals why he changed his mind for Canada's 'quiet, sleepy $18 billion company'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Mike Manalac, a CPA, left Baltimore for San Francisco to pursue a job at Google.</li><li>He faced challenges, including initial rejection from tech giants and a grueling commute to Google.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mikefromaccounting.com/">Mike Manalac</a>, a 39-year-old accounting manager at Google in Chicago. It's been edited for length and clarity.I'm a CPA who started my career in 2008 during the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-warned-great-recession-2008-brooksley-born-wall-street-sexism-2024-3">Great Recession</a>. I spent eight years working as an auditor, first at CohnReznick in Baltimore and then at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remote-work-good-for-productivity-here-to-stay-pwc-2024-9">PwC</a> in San Francisco, where I worked for about five months while looking for tech jobs.After a brief stint in financial reporting with Walmart's e-commerce division, I <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-bureaucracy-working-from-home-office-eric-schmidt-wfh-rto-2024-8">joined Google</a> in 2017 as a senior accountant based in Sunnyvale, California. I transferred to Google's Chicago office in 2019.<h2 id="aebbdeae-cdb3-4d2f-91c7-1520000be47b">At CohnReznick, I put in 70-hour workweeks crammed in a cubicle under the glow of fluorescent lights</h2>It wasn't all bad, but it wasn't the fun and fulfilling career I had dreamed of. Meanwhile, Silicon Valley employees were <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/perks-that-silicon-valley-workers-can-take-advantage-of-2019-9">showered with perks</a> and would spend their days riding around a corporate campus on colorful bikes (at least, that's what I saw in the media). It felt like a distant utopia for a normie like me.One of my favorite movies was the 2013 comedy "The Internship." One day, after watching Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson parade around Silicon Valley for the millionth time, I decided I needed to make a change. Baltimore was my hometown, and I loved it, but it didn't offer the job opportunities of a top-tier city. I felt stuck.I realized that if I wanted a coveted job at Google, I would have to go out and get it. I spent the next few days convincing myself that I wasn't crazy.<h2 id="b50d63d2-863b-4458-b130-99f4226b516c">I quit my job, emptied my house, sold my car, and hopped on a one-way flight to San Francisco</h2>I said goodbye to everything I had ever known. I had never visited San Francisco and arrived without a place to live. I had a job lined up with PwC, but that was always meant to be temporary. Once I got my bearings in San Francisco, I would start chasing after the dream job for which I uprooted my life.It didn't take long to get hit with a reality check. The recruiters at giants like Google and Facebook wouldn't give me the time of day. I had never worked for a Fortune 500 company and needed additional experience before the Big Tech companies would take me seriously.I accepted an offer with Walmart's e-commerce team in San Bruno to do financial reporting. One of my highlights was supporting the launch of Walmart's two-day shipping initiative to compete with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/deals/is-amazon-prime-worth-it">Amazon Prime</a>. This was the type of work experience I needed to get on Big Tech's radar.A year and a half later, I was back interviewing with all the heavy hitters in Silicon Valley: Facebook, Amazon, Salesforce, Uber, Tesla, etc. I mostly secured these interviews by initiating a discussion with recruiters on LinkedIn. I fine-tuned my approach with every failed interview and started seeing repeated success. I'd later share my strategies in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.mikefromaccounting.com/store-1/p/no-flux-given">playbook</a> I wrote and illustrated, where I help other stuck accountants land their dream jobs.I then found myself knocking on Google's door again. This time, it answered.<h2 id="20d86a68-48e2-4d13-afbb-700677a1d303">After a rigorous two-month interview process, my desire to work at Google became a reality in the fall of 2017</h2>Google offered me a senior accountant position with a lucrative compensation package that included a sign-on bonus, a six-figure salary, an annual performance bonus of 10% or more of my salary, and stock awards. The perks were as good as advertised, and Google met my expectations of a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-hired-me-without-college-degree-imposter-syndrome-2024-8">dream job</a>. The commute, however, was more like a nightmare.I was required to work from the Sunnyvale office, up to two hours from where I lived in San Francisco. I had moved across the country for my dream job, so I wouldn't let a four-hour daily commute stop me now. I spent the next year commuting 20 hours a week on a corporate shuttle bus, and it was grueling.I'd leave my apartment at 6:30 a.m. and head toward the bus stop. My workday started the moment I stepped onto the bus. When I arrived at the office around 9 a.m., I felt like I had already worked a half day.I'd do the same two-hour commute in the evening, leaving Sunnyvale at 5 p.m. and returning to San Francisco at 7 p.m. The hefty commute meant a lot of late dinners, an achy back, and limited time to go to the gym.<h2 id="12e6b3f1-2a82-4295-ad3b-6571130ee967">A year later, I volunteered for a transfer to Chicago to help with an office expansion</h2>At the time, leaving the so-called Bay Area "mothership" was seen as a risky move. I knew I'd miss beautiful San Francisco and the buzzing energy of working in the world's tech capital. I also knew Chicago was an amazing city, with a more manageable cost of living and closer proximity to my hometown.I left my heart in San Francisco, but Chicago is my kind of town. I <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-and-advice-for-first-time-homebuyer-2023-2">bought a house</a>, started a family, and shaved 15 hours off my weekly commute. I take the train to the office three days a week and spend the rest <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wfh-fears-impacting-kids-parenting-remote-work-2024-7">working from home</a>. I now have plenty of time to relax, and I can sit down with my family for dinner at a more reasonable time.<h2 id="fb9cbc66-29b0-4f56-9375-dd2b6721d258">Leaving the mothership hasn't slowed me down a bit</h2>I was promoted to manager in 2020 and now lead an accounting team supporting Google Search and YouTube.For anyone feeling stuck in their career, don't be afraid to take some risks and make some sacrifices. I ultimately had to bounce around the East Coast, West Coast, and Midwest to find the pleasant and fulfilling career I sought, but I found it.It started by uprooting my life and commuting four hours a day for my dream job at Google, and it was totally worth it.Want to share your story? The administration justified the move by pointing to today's extreme US unemployment and saying the suspension would prevent immigrants from taking jobs that would otherwise go to Americans. But the move is also in keeping with Trump's desire to reduce all immigration, not just illegal immigration and asylum.The idea that reducing immigration preserves jobs for Americans may sound reasonable, but it's wrong. The US economy does not have a finite and fixed number of jobs. If it did, we would have run out of jobs centuries ago. Instead, the US job market continually expands as the population grows. Like Americans, immigrants who work and live in the United States spend the money they earn. And the money they spend, combined with ever-increasing productivity, creates more jobs.H1-B visas, in particular, are big job-creators. Studies suggest that the economic contribution from each H1-B immigrant <a href="http://www.newamericaneconomy.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/H1B_Effect.pdf">creates another 2 to 5 jobs for Americans.</a> An estimated 30% of the US science and tech workforce was born outside the country. More than <a href="https://www.inc.com/arnobio-morelix/inc-entrepreneurship-index-2018-q1.html">40% of Fortune 500 companies</a> were started by immigrants and their children.America was built by immigrants, and immigration helps keep America's economy the largest and most innovative in the world. Reducing immigration, especially skilled immigration, won't "protect" jobs for Americans. It will reduce the number of jobs that the US economy creates. It will also make the US less competitive, as ambitious, skilled people who weren't born here decide to build their companies in other countries.In short, Trump's visa suspension will hurt America, American companies, and Americans. — HB Why is the Trump White House falling apart now? Why not six months ago? The Trump White House, never exactly a well oiled machine, has been belching black smoke all week — every statement ill-planned, every venture half-baked. Peter Navarro announced that the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navarro-retracts-claim-china-trade-deal-over-after-trump-tweet-2020-6">China trade deal was "over," </a>spinning <keyword id="31671" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="markets">markets</keyword> into confusion, then recanted. President Trump <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-too-good-a-job-coronavirus-testing-cases-scripps-interview-2020-6">bragged about slowing down coronavirus testing</a> — essentially confirming an accusation made by critics. An agitated White House said he was joking. The Vice President said he was making an offhand remark. Then the President rejected both excuses, and said he meant it.Attorney General Bill Barr tried to axe Manhattan US Attorney Geoffrey Berman and replace him with a crony, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sdny-us-attorney-geoffrey-berman-says-he-will-step-down-2020-6">was unprepared when Berman refused to leave</a>, had to drag the President into the mess, and then ended up with a legendarily incorruptible prosecutor taking Berman's place. Half the administration is preparing for a second wave; half is saying the virus is over.And of course the Tulsa rally turned into Trump's very own Fyre Festival.After three and a half years, none of these incidents of incompetence surprises. Trump is ruled by caprice. Plus he has chopped through staff so relentlessly that his White House is down to the D students. Still, this week marks a new low, and perhaps a fundamental change in the administration. When a system of the body or brain has been worn down by age, stress, and fatigue, it often suddenly collapses. The term for this is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decompensation#:~:text=In%20medicine%2C%20decompensation%20is%20the,function%20despite%20stressors%20or%20defects.">decompensation</a>. A previously functioning system just falls apart, no longer able to handle all the stressors it was previously able to compensate for (Hence, "decompensation"). For years, the Trump administration has compensated brilliantly — more brilliantly than its critics expected. When threatened, Trump distracted with chaos. Or the good economy mollified people. Or conservative allies protected him with excuses. But the last few weeks have introduced too many stressors: virus, recession, mass protests, falling poll numbers, Trump's obsession with reelection. Not even this president can withstand it. The system has broken. The area, encompassing about six square blocks, has been operating under its own authority, with some likening it to a cross between Occupy Wall Street and a festival. Protesters have monitored the perimeters, and very few agents of the city have been allowed to enter.Seattle authorities had been tolerant, even supportive, of the protests and the occupation of public space. Last week the mayor's office <a href="https://durkan.seattle.gov/2020/06/city-of-seattle-responds-to-the-capitol-hill-organized-protest/">issued a statement</a> saying the city "is committed to maintaining space for community to come together, protest and exercise their first amendment rights." But after three shootings this weekend in the CHOP area — one fatal — Mayor Jenny Durkan said Monday that "It's time for people to go home." It's unclear whether the shootings had anything to do with the protests or were just part of the reality of inner-city life in the heavily-armed United States. Rather than emulate the harsh <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/blog/2011/nov/15/occupy-movement-police-crackdowns">overnight crackdowns</a> on Occupy encampments that effectively ended that movement in 2011, Durkan says she <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/seattle-police-will-return-to-east-precinct-where-chop-has-reigned-durkan-says/">wants to phase out the CHOP area</a> by encouraging people to leave at night, which the CHOP organizers have also been encouraging so that the area stops "being a chaotic, immobile zone" overnight.This experiment in anarchic community-building was not built to last. This is not to lay blame on CHOP's organizers and protesters, but violence was always the most likely way the city's tolerance for a cop-free zone would end.Polls show the public is firmly behind the protests against racism and police brutality, but they're not ready to abolish police, nor abandon the rule of law in chunks of their cities. — Anthony FisherStill CHOP should be an inspiration for other protests and other experiments.Well, Anthony Fisher, I can't say that I'm surprised that Seattle police are returning to CHOP after a spate of violence. But given the crisis of confidence in policing, we could use lots more experiments like CHOP. Could a city set up a carless-precinct, where cops only walk? Or a precinct with just nighttime patrols? Or one where the cops all live within precinct boundaries?
