Steve Smith gets nod to take over opening duties from David Warner in Test cricket

The 37-year-old <keyword id="19928917" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="warner" source="keywords">Warner</keyword> played his final Test at the SCG on Saturday, helping Australia sweep the series 3-0 against Pakistan. He has already announced retirement from ODIs but will be available for T20Is and T20 leagues across the globe. "Yeah, I've got ambitions later down the track to potentially coach," Warner told 'Fox Cricket'. "I'll have to speak with the wife first to see if I'm allowed a few more days away." The left-handed opening batter was known for his aggressive behaviour against opposition players before the Cape Town ball-tampering saga in 2018. Earlier this week, Australian opener Usman Khawaja claimed that the coaching staff instructed Warner to sledge opponents during the early stages of his Test career, with the Newlands sandpaper scandal prompting an overhaul of the team's culture. "When I came into the team, the way that I went about it on the field was to get in people's faces, to upset them and to get them off their rhythm when they're batting. I was moulded into being that person." He said the art of sledging will soon become a thing of the past courtesy of T20 franchise leagues such as the Indian Premier League, where cricketers share change rooms with their opponents, according to the 'Fox Cricket' report. "I don't think you'll see that kind of sledging or anything like that anymore. I think it'll be just like a bit of laughter, a bit of banter, like me and Shaheen Shah Afridi (in the Test against Pakistan). "I think that's probably the way forward. I don't think you'll see that old aggression again," he said. "It will change. In five, ten years' time, if I am coaching, I think the whole dynamic will be changing, and it'll be more about cricket specifics and how you're winning games, and not about how you get on the skin of batsmen when you're out there." Warner finished his Test career with 8786 runs at an average of 44.59, including 26 centuries and 37 fifties. He is Australia's fifth-leading run-scorer in Test history. As the build-up to next month's WTC final between India and Australia at The Oval intensifies, <keyword id="11712" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="shastri" source="Orion">Shastri</keyword> faced the unenviable task of naming his best combined XI. Former India head coach admitted he found the task a difficult one due to the sheer amount of world-class players on both sides. But, he stuck his neck out and settled on a final XI with four India stars and seven from Australia making the cut. The 60-year old is a long-standing supporter of Rohit Sharma and said the India captain gets the nod as skipper over Australian counterpart Pat Cummins and wins a spot as one of the two openers as a result. "I would give the captaincy to Rohit because he's much more experienced than Pat. He's been around and he's captained sides for a long time," Shastri said in the latest episode of The ICC Review "If Steve Smith was captain of Australia, then maybe it's a different story, but since it's Pat Cummins and Rohit Sharma, Rohit wins it. Plus, you know, as a captain, you're a certainty in the XI so he opens the batting," he added. The decision on who would partner Rohit at the top of the order is a tough one, according to Shastri, with the likes of Australian duo David Warner and Usman Khawaja and emerging India right-hander Shubman Gill all in the mix for the crucial position. Only England star Joe Root scored more runs than Khawaja during the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle and Shastri said the Australian left-hander deserves to get the nod. "It's a tight one between Usman Khawaja and Shubman Gill," Shastri admitted. "Shubman is the rising young star and he's a terrific player, but Usman Khawaja, just by current form and the number of runs he's got over the last couple of years, I think he gets in there," he added. The noted commentator said it was an easy decision as to who bats at No.3, No.4 and No.5, with the No.1 ranked Test batter Marnus Labuschagne and experienced duo Virat Kohli and Steve Smith the obvious choices to fill these vital spots. "Number three is a no-brainer as Marnus (Labuschagne) has been outstanding in Test match cricket. He averages close to 60, so he gets in there straight away," Shastri said. "Kohli at four for just what he's done over the years and Smith at five for what he's done over the years and the kind of quality they bring to the table," he added. Shastri is a massive fan of young Australia all-rounder Cameron Green, but thinks Ravindra <keyword id="4167" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jadeja" source="Orion">Jadeja</keyword> earns the spot to bat at No.6 due to his ability to act as a second spinning option. "At No.6, I get in Jadeja, because I believe he is one of the best all-rounders in the world," he noted. "We know there's (England captain) Ben Stokes, but Ben has had problems with his fitness, so Jadeja comes in there and gives a lot of balance to that side," he added. Australia keeper Alex Carey wins the spot as wicket-keeper and to bat at No.7 ahead of India's KS Bharat, while Shastri admitted he found it difficult to leave out India veteran Ravichandran Ashwin and opt for Nathan Lyon as the front-line spinner in his XI. "The reason why I picked Nathan Lyon ahead of Ashwin is because of Nathan's overseas record. Not just in Australia, but outside Australia and (Lyon is) probably stronger to bowl those overs in England if needed," Shastri said. "So he comes in with Jadeja as the second spinner, with Jadeja more the all-rounder and Lyon the spinner," he added. The former India skipper said the decisions on the pace attack was relatively easy to make, with experienced left-armer Mitchell Starc providing the variety alongside a pair of in-form right-armers. "(Pat) Cummins, of course, for me, he's a top-class operator and Mohammed Shami, he's like vintage and he's just getting better and better as we're seeing in this IPL. And stronger. So he comes in there," Shastri noted. "And then it was a tough one between (Josh) Hazelwood, Starc and Cameron Green also there. But I preferred Jadeja because you get a better balance with two spinners, three fast bowlers, out and out fast bowlers and I would take Starc (to complement them) because of pace and variety being the left-armer. It's a hard choice (to settle on final XI) because Ashwin's world-class, you've got Hazelwood world-class there and you've got (Cheteshwar) Pujara there who could be threatening. So it's not easy," he added. England resumed the session with a score of 154/4 with Harry Brook batting (40*) and Ben Stokes (7*) on the crease. Australia tipped the balance of scale as Mitchell <keyword id="1596377" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="starc" source="Orion">Starc</keyword> dismissed Stokes and Bairstow in quick succession. Starc with his experience ensured Stokes didn't pull off another Headingler miracle on them. The ball glanced off his bat and went straight into the hands of Alex Carey. They got Cameron Bancroft out for a duck but that was the end of England's resurgence in that series. Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith came in and normal service resumed with the Australian batsmen dominating the Englishmen. Khawaja was one of three centurions in that innings, the other two being the Marsh brothers and Australia declared on a mammoth 649/7. They won the match by an innings and 123 runs. Alastair Cook, 235* at Brisbane in 2010 Cook was at his prolific best when England arrived in Australia in a bid to defend their title. They started off on shaky ground though, with Australia taking a lead of 221 thanks to a brilliant pair of centuries by Mike Hussey and Brad Haddin. What followed was two and a half days in hell for the Aussie bowlers as Cook, Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott pushed England to 517/1, a scorecard that broke quite a few records. Cook was unbeaten 235 having shared a 188-run stand with Strauss before putting on 329 for the second wicket with Trott. Steve Smith, 215 at Lord's in 2015 Smith was on overdrive and before this match, his previous totals in Test cricket read as 214,161,206,188,30,253 and 66. Australia made a strong start to the second Test, batting first with a 78-run stand between David Warner and Chris Rogers. What followed that was the end of any hopes England had of taking a 2-0 lead in the series. Smith and Rogers put up 284 runs for the second wicket.  All-rounder Hardik Pandya's last-over heroics helped <keyword id="13880" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Indians">Mumbai Indians</keyword> recover from a mediocre position to post a healthy 184/8 against <keyword id="3315697" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rising-Pune-Supergiant">Rising Pune Supergiant</keyword> (RPS) in the second game of the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Thursday. 
 
Bengal medium pacer Ashoke Dinda was the culprit for the home side conceding 30 runs in the final over when Hardik (35 not out) hammered the right-armer for four sixes (including three consecutive) and a four to change the course of the game. 
 
Earlier, South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who went unsold in the auctions and was a late addition to the Pune squad, brought the hosts back into the game with three quick wickets after the Mumbai opening duo of Jos Buttler (38) and Parthiv Patel (19) added 45 runs for the opening wicket. 
 
Introduced in the fifth over, Tahir struck in his second ball when he bowled Parthiv round his legs before packing Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma (3) and Buttler in his next over to reduce Mumbai to 62/3. 
 
Rohit, who has been out of action for almost five months, was slow on his feet and it was enough for Tahir to break through his defence. One ball later, Tahir trapped the dangerous Buttler in front although television replays later showed that the Englishman had got a thick inside edge. 
 
Before his dismissal, Buttler lived up to his billing, milking his English teammate and IPL-10's costliest buy Ben Stokes (Rs 14.5 crore) for two consecutive sixes and then dispatching rookie Rajasthan medium-pacer Deepak Chahar for a four and a six off back-to-back deliveries. His 19-ball knock was laced with three hits to the fence and as many maximums. 
 
After the strategic time-out, Pune skipper Steve Smith introduced veteran all-rounder Rajat Bhatia, who responded well by taking a simple return catch to pack Ambati Rayudu (10) before dismissing Krunal Pandya (3) cheaply. 
 
Australian leggie Adam Zampa then added to the misery for the visitors by picking the crucial wicket of Nitish Rana (34), comfortably caught by Bhatia at deep midwicket. 
 
Rana looked good for his 28-ball knock, consisting a four and two sixes, but it was the 30-run fourth-wicket stand with Rayudu and 18 runs with Keiron Pollard (27) that mattered more. 
 Pollard, who was dropped by <keyword id="6397" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dhoni">Dhoni</keyword> on 22, struggled to get the big shots before falling to a stunning running catch by Mayank Agarwal at the long-on boundary off Stokes. 
 
The West Indian struck three boundaries and a six in his 17-ball innings as he added 21 runs for the seventh wicket with Hardik Pandya. 
 
Hardik then added 37 runs for the eighth wicket with New Zealander Tim Southee (7) to put Mumbai in a commanding position.
