<ul class="summary-list"><li>It sure seems like <keyword id="19959118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter" source="keywords">Twitter</keyword> is more likely to show content from <keyword id="20052066" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Republican" source="keywords">Republican</keyword> or right-wing accounts.</li><li>That's the conclusion from two new reports in The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.</li></ul>Is X, the service many of us still call <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter">Twitter</a>, more likely to show users political posts from Republicans, or right-leaning accounts? Yes. Probably. That's the conclusion from two different deep dives published in The Washington Post and The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/x-twitter-political-content-election-2024-28f2dadd?mod=hp_lead_pos3">Wall Street Journal</a> on Tuesday. Next question: Is Twitter doing this intentionally, at the behest of owner <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a>? That one is harder to answer. Both questions matter, obviously, because we're a week away from the <keyword id="20189882" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-presidential-election" source="keywords">US presidential election</keyword>. And while <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-advertisers-cannes-speech-tweets-twitter-x-peter-kafka-2024-6">Twitter has become a financial disaster under Musk's ownership</a>, it still remains an important news hub for many millions of people. Meanwhile, Musk, who used to support Democrats, has thrown himself completely behind Donald <keyword id="19906203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trump" source="keywords">Trump</keyword>'s campaign. He says "<a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1840409051357696324">Democracy is over</a>" if Trump loses. Neither the Journal nor the Post want to draw a direct line between Musk's politics and Twitter's operations. But there are certainly some suggestions of dotted lines. I've asked Twitter for comment. The details: Both papers used software to analyze what users see on Twitter. The Post looked at a year-plus of tweets from top congressional accounts; the Journal created 14 brand-new Twitter accounts, controlled by bots and spread throughout the US. The Post's conclusion: Tweets from congressional accounts across the spectrum are getting less attention than they did a year ago. But Republican tweets are much more likely to go viral than Democrats. The Journal's findings don't exactly sync with the Post. It finds that its theoretical new users, who told Twitter they are not interested in politics, saw their feeds clogged with <keyword id="20531476" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="political-content" source="keywords">political content</keyword> anyway. And while it says Kamala Harris' campaign was the most-seen account, the platform skewed right overall: "Ten of the other top 14 most-seen leaned right, including Trump's, and overall, pro-Trump content appeared about twice as frequently as pro-Harris material." What accounts for the right-leaning shift? Neither paper wants to say definitively. But they both hover around two possibilities, which aren't mutually exclusive: Theory 1: Twitter is showing users what users want to see. That's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1807089883602956465">the argument Musk makes himself.</a> And there is decent logic behind it. For starters, even before Musk bought Twitter,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2025334119"> its own researchers found that the "political right enjoys higher amplification compared to the political left"</a> on the platform. And it's entirely plausible that some left-leaning users have left the platform during Musk's ownership, in part because he reinstated accounts from right-leaning users, including Trump himself. Conservatives may also be flocking to it for the same reason. And those users may be more likely to engage with right-leaning content, prompting the site's algorithm to show them more of it — the same way all social media sites generally work with popular content. Theory 2: Twitter is showing users what Musk wants them to see. This is a notion that some current and former Twitter users believe, though there's no direct proof that it's the case. But there is plenty of precedent for it, since Musk has repeatedly moved the platform according to his whims in the past. Most famously, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/musk-changed-twitter-algorithm-tweets-didnt-get-attention-book-2024-2">Musk ordered engineers to highlight his own tweets after the 2023 Super Bowl</a>, as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.platformer.news/">Platformer's</a> Zoe Schiffer has reported. Musk has also used the site to host interviews with political figures he's interested in, including a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/desantis-campaign-launch-on-twitter-spaces-off-to-gltichy-start-2023-5">buggy chat with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2023</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzWjFzRMQNA">one with Trump this summer</a>. The Journal also reports that "more recently, Musk complained that a fraction of users saw his livestreams," and compelled his engineers to promote those chats on the site. When President Joe Biden was the presumptive Democratic nominee, it was his biggest vulnerability, despite low unemployment and consistent job gains after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.Inflation has been driving much of the voter anxiety about the economy. On Tuesday, various polling sites in five battleground states were the targets of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/georgia-poll-bomb-threats-russia-election-harris-trump-2024-11">hoax bomb threats from Russian email domains</a>, the FBI said, and that was only part of Russian actions.Georgia's Secretary of State accused Moscow of being "up to mischief," saying that "they don't want us to have a smooth, fair and accurate election, and if they can get us to fight among ourselves, they can count that as a victory."The Russian embassy in Washington denied the accusations as "malicious slander" and said "Russia has not interfered and does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries," including the US, but such activities are well documented.<h2 id="193769f6-1321-4ffb-b08c-2325bce96246">Rising levels of interference</h2><div type="image" title="Russian President Vladimir Putin and then-US President Donald Trump sit in chairs opposite each other, shaking hands." height="3327" width="4889" msid="115115440" hostid="261" sizebytes="445288"></div>Experts and officials began to seriously take note of efforts by Russia and other US adversaries, such as China and Iran, to disrupt US politics in 2016, and it's continually gotten worse."Undoubtedly we've seen an uptick in the scope and scale and, really, the kind of brazenness of Russian election interference in the information environment," Doug Livermore, a member of the US special operations community and the director of engagements at the Irregular Warfare Initiative, told Business Insider.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nato.int/docu/review/articles/2024/04/26/russias-hybrid-war-against-the-west/index.html">Hybrid warfare</a> covers a range of tactics, such as assassinations, espionage, cyberattacks, electoral interference, and disinformation, intended to deniably influence or disrupt national security and domestic affairs.2016 saw the rising influence of Russian bot farms and mass disinformation while the 2020 election saw major efforts by Russia and other US foes to stoke violence and unrest, particularly as then-President Donald Trump contested the results and inspired the January 6th insurrection on the US Capitol.A month prior to the 2024 election, the National Intelligence Council released a report <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.dni.gov/files/ODNI/documents/assessments/NICM-Declassified-Foreign-Threats-to-US-Elections-After-Voting-Ends-in-2024.pdf">warning that Russia, China, and Iran were better equipped to influence the election</a> and undermine confidence in the results due to lessons from 2020; the council cited a range of tactics that could be used, including cyberattacks, artificial intelligence, and encouragement of electoral chaos and violence.<div type="image" title="capitol riot january 6" height="1666" width="2500" msid="115115445" hostid="261" sizebytes="414688"></div>Then, on Monday, the head of the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said disinformation was being spread by US adversaries "at a greater level than ever before."The efforts were designed to prompt distrust, fear, and misunderstanding in American voters and raise doubts over the integrity of US democracy. The 2024 presidential election was likely of particular interest to Russia, though, because of what was on the line: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-win-clocking-ticking-on-ukraine-aid-2024-11">US support for Ukraine</a>, of which Trump has been less supportive.<h2 id="a4700f32-0a7c-4d04-93ea-ed4b4b837c59">More than an American problem</h2>This hybrid warfare is a broader problem for other Western countries, too. In recent months, Russia was accused of attempting to undermine Moldova's election in favor of a pro-Moscow candidate, using tactics such as a vote-buying scheme, organizing transportation to get Russians to vote at Moldovan missions in other countries, and cyberattacks and fake bomb threats to out-of-country voting operations.Russia was also recently accused of attempting to interfere in the Republic of Georgia's parliamentary election, as well as elections in France, the UK, Germany, and others. The big difference between <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/the-west-must-respond-to-russias-rapidly-escalating-hybrid-warfare/">how Russia engages in hybrid warfare in the US versus some European democracies</a> comes down to the political systems that exist in those countries, Livermore said. "They don't really care about the ideology of the organizations," Livermore said, so long as it "advances the Kremlin's interests."These interference efforts also undermine democracy more generally, working in favor of autocratic governments. In the run-up to the US presidential election, Chinese state media emphasized deep divisions, dysfunction, and fears of violence in the US.The state-run Beijing Daily, for example, wrote: "the US election, once considered a highlight of the so-called 'beacon of democracy,' may now become the starting gun of 'social unrest.'"Livermore said such efforts allow Russia and China to indict democracy in favor of their authoritarian governments. Notably, experts have assessed Russia, China, and Iran are growing increasingly closer in efforts to challenge the US-led world order. He said Russia, China, and Iran were likely "hoping that they were going to have a couple of months of chaos in the US," but that is now much less likely.US stability in the transition of power can be attributed to lessons learned from 2020, from local and federal governments to law enforcement, on how to maintain trust in the election process and suppress post-election violence.

PM Modi will be visiting the US from September 21 to 23. Speaking on Tuesday at his first public appearance following the recent apparent assassination attempt, Trump said Modi will meet him next week when he is in the US. "So when India, which is a very big abuser. He (Modi) happens to be coming to meet me next week, and Modi, he's fantastic. I mean, fantastic man. A lot of these leaders are fantastic," Trump said, reiterating that India imposes heavy tariffs on imports. The former president revealed the information as he spoke about trade and tariffs while responding to a question at a town hall meeting in Flint, Michigan. He went on to say, "These people are the sharpest people. They're not a little bit backwards...You know the expression, they're at the top of their game, and they use it against us. But India is very tough. Brazil is very tough....China is the toughest of all, but we were taking care of China with the tariffs." "So we're going to do a reciprocal trade. If anybody charges us 10 cents, if they charge us USD 2, if they charge us a hundred per cent, 250, we charge them the same thing. And what's going to happen? <ul class="summary-list"><li>US presidential candidates Biden and Trump both vow to get tough on China.</li><li>EIU predicts worsening US-China economic and diplomatic ties over the 2020s.</li></ul>The US presidential election is less than six months away, and Democratic and Republican presidential nominee frontrunners Joe Biden and Donald Trump have both vowed to get tough on China.Despite this, China will likely extend its reach in the global supply chain, the Economist Intelligence Unit, or EIU, wrote in a note on Tuesday.The EIU, which is expecting Biden to retain the US presidency, expects "a sustained worsening" in economic and diplomatic ties between China and the US over this decade — regardless of who wins the election."Either president will pursue policies aimed at exerting further pressure on China's technology sector, while also justifying future trade and investment restrictions based on national security concerns," wrote the EIU analysts.In April, President Biden <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-sells-blue-collar-workers-american-dream-failing-china-steel-2024-4">called for</a> a tripling of tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum imports, echoing former <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariff-china-trade-war-consumer-goods-2018-9">President Donald Trump's levies</a> on a range of goods from China.Trump said in February he would slap tariffs of over 60% on Chinese goods if he's elected.Should Biden win the presidency, he is expected to continue to continue working with like-minded governments."The primacy of US security and economic goals in Mr Biden's diplomatic agenda will still ensure a degree of collateral damage to economies that have deep trade and investment linkages with China," wrote the EIU analysts.They added that if Trump wins the presidency, he is likely to take a "much more antagonistic approach" to the US-China relationship, which risks collateral damage to third-party economies."This would return bilateral diplomatic and trade relations to the state of volatility that characterized his first term," the EIU analysts wrote.However, the EIU said it doesn't expect either Biden's or Trump's trade policies to reduce China's role in global production networks significantly.It is instead expecting the extension of China-linked supply chains via "capital-hungry markets" in Latin America and Southeast Asia."These same dynamics will ultimately make many of these emerging markets vulnerable to an escalation of trade hostilities with the US," EIU's analysts added.As it is, Chinese manufacturers may already be skirting sanctions by using <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-using-mexico-skirt-us-import-tariffs-trade-economy-2024-3">Mexico as a backdoor</a> to get exports into the US.Even Chinese manufacturers are shifting their production out of China to other <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-supply-chains-moving-companies-outside-mainland-2023-4#soon-to-be-the-worlds-most-populous-country-india-is-an-attractive-manufacturing-base-due-to-its-vast-lands-and-young-populations-1">low-cost manufacturing hubs</a> in Asia, including Vietnam and Bangladesh, to avoid geopolitical risks.

Nonetheless, Kedmi opined on Russian state media that Putin is electable in Western nations."It was said that [the West] is winning a propaganda war but I'm not so sure about that," Kedmi said, per the Daily Beast. "Look at any country in Europe. US President-elect <keyword id="99719" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joe-Biden">Joe Biden</keyword> was an early supporter of the India-US relationship and his administration will continue to prioritise the defence and security partnership with New Delhi, a key area which has progressed during Donald Trump's tenure as president, a senior official from the Barrack Obama-era administration has said. The US media has projected Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election. However, incumbent Trump is yet to concede defeat, vowing to mount legal fights in several key battleground states. There is much speculation on how the India-US relationship will shape during Biden's time in the White house. "Based on the priorities articulated already by President-elect Biden, I would anticipate that the Biden-Harris administration will continue to place a high priority on the defence and security relationship with India, the major area that has advanced during the Trump administration," Alyssa Ayres Senior fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) told . Author of 'Our Time Has Come: How India is Making Its Place in the World,' Ayres had served as deputy assistant secretary of state for South Asia from 2010 to 2013. Former vice president Biden was an early supporter of the US-India relationship, she said, adding that the president-elect, 15 years ago, viewed the US and India as "the two closest nations in the world". Biden had even championed the civil-nuclear agreement with India in Congress, Ayres recalled. Biden's election campaign website speaks on partnering with India to support rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific region. Biden's global priorities on fighting the coronavirus pandemic and tackling climate change will necessitate close cooperation with India, Ayres said. "I've seen a lot of attention in the Indian media to the question of whether President-elect Biden will criticise India on questions of democracy and human rights -- he has stated that he has concerns, and given his decades of diplomatic experience would be likely to convey his views privately -- but I've seen little on the question of climate change and clean energy," Ayres said in response to a question. Ayres expects clean energy and climate cooperation to return to the forefront of the agenda during the Biden administration as was the case during Barrack Obama's term. "We can see the catastrophic effects of climate change before us. Our country is on fire, and our coasts regularly hit by hurricanes, while India battles floods, drought, and extreme weather events; and we cannot solve this without dramatically scaling up clean energy," she said. "India has emerged as a global leader in solar (power) and it will be in all of our collective interest to renew cooperation on this area (which) the Trump administration set aside," Ayres said. Originally trained as a cultural historian, Ayres has carried out research in India-Pakistan geopolitics. Before serving in the Obama administration, Ayres was founding director of the India and South Asia practice at McLarty Associates, a Washington-based international strategic advisory firm, from 2008 to 2010. From 2007 to 2008, she served as special assistant to the undersecretary of state for political affairs as a CFR international affairs fellow. Prior to that she worked in the non-profit sector at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for the Advanced Study of India and at the Asia Society in New York. Although the weeks preceding an election are always tense, this year the stakes are especially high, with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-prepare-coronavirus-winter-holidays-new-wave-epidemiologist-2020-10">global pandemic</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/george-floyd-protests-defining-history-politics-election-black-lives-matter-2020-6">social-justice reckoning</a>, and an open seat that could affect the Supreme Court for decades.As a result, people on both sides of the political aisle are extra invested in this year's election. Kids are picking up on all of that. "I recommend having age-appropriate conversations with children about politics; children will hear about things via various technological platforms and friends, and consequently, it is important for them to speak openly with their parents," said <a href="https://www.communitypsychiatry.com/providers/leela-magavi-m-d/">Leela Magavi</a>, MD, a psychologist in California. Kids as young as three can pick up on political divides, Magavi says, so it's important to facilitate open conversation. Here are five ways to have productive and kid-friendly conversations about politics and the election. <h2>Teach them about the government</h2>The government and the election cycle can be confusing, so it's empowering to give kids an age-appropriate breakdown of how American democracy works. "We can talk about how we can make a difference in government, both during and after the election," said Shannon Brescher Shea, author of<a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/625190/growing-sustainable-together-by-shannon-brescher-shea/"> "Growing Sustainable Together: Practical Resources for Raising Kind, Engaged, Resilient Children</a>."Brescher Shea teaches her own sons, four and seven, how to be engaged citizens, by writing to lawmakers, attending rallies and, of course, thinking about voting. "My older kid even put in his own comment on the Army Corp of Engineers request for comments on the Keystone XL pipeline," Brescher Shea said. "He looked quite pleased when I told him that the people in charge of making the decision are required to read his input!"<h2>Use books to start conversations</h2>In addition to encouraging their own civil engagement, Brescher Shea uses books to talk to her boys about how individuals — including kids — can make a difference in politics. "It's not a matter of right or wrong for a political party, but what best aligns with the things she wants to see happen in the world," Elle said.This is important to Elle as a Black mother, who says that she sees the political as personal. "When we discuss issues like health care or equal rights, it is not about each sides' 'views,' but I ask her to make a decision about what she would support if these issues were about her best friend," Elle said. <h2>Make room for their emotions, and yours</h2>Elle is an expert on wholeness <keyword id="6381498" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="parenting">parenting</keyword> — embracing all the emotions that come with being a parent in today's political atmosphere. "I give way to the full range of emotions surrounding [my daughter] navigating and digesting the current events," she said. Elle didn't hide her heartbreak and worry after George Floyd's murder, for example. Having emotion is a normal response to political movements, she said.Removing the emotions threatens to separate political decisions from real life, which just isn't realistic, Elle said. "When topics like [racial justice] are politicized it allows us to be removed from the indictment that our choices affect another person's life," she said. "If they do not directly affect our personhood then we can make light of filling in a bubble on a ballot."<h2>Remain hopeful</h2>No matter what happens on November 3, it's important to keep a positive outlook for kids, and empower them to engage with our political system, experts say. "When talking to kids about politics, we need to be realistic without being depressing," said Brescher Shea. "We don't want to burden them with a sense of hopelessness."Touching on the ways that engagement can make a difference — on the local, state, or federal level — can help kids keep their chins up. It's important that they know political engagement is about more than just the pressure cooker in the weeks leading up to a general election. "It's important to make sure that we don't place all of our hopes and dreams on the election," Brescher Shea said.
