Gold is getting crushed by the US Federal Reserve

With the rupee witnessing a downward spiral for the past several weeks, even crossing the 83 mark against the US dollar, <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> on Wednesday said that the Indian currency has behaved in an orderly manner and its trajectory shouldn't be looked at emotionally. Das, while addressing industry body FICCI's banking summit in Mumbai, said that capital flows will resume as the <keyword id="6356435" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="Orion">US Federal Reserve</keyword> will not resort to tightening rates for a long time. The RBI Governor's comments on the rupee came just hours before the US Fed is scheduled to meet later in the day to review key rates. It is anticipated that the <keyword id="6355253" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="federal-reserve" source="Orion">Federal Reserve</keyword> may hike rates to curb rising inflation. Meanwhile, referring to the RBI's Monetary Policy Committee's (<keyword id="6369693" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mpc" source="Orion">MPC</keyword>) scheduled meeting on Thursday to discuss its reply to the government, for failing to keep inflation within its tolerance limit of less than 4 per cent, Das said that the central bank won't immediately release details of the deliberations. The RBI does not have the authority to release these details, he said. The central bank is mandated to keep inflation within the tolerance limit of 2 per cent to 4 per cent. However, its failure to do so for the past nine months has warranted a response from the Centre. Defending the RBI's handling of price rise, Das said that acting prematurely on inflation would have exerted a heavy cost on the economy and citizens. Though he agreed that inflation has not been under control, the RBI Governor at the same time added that the central bank prevented a "complete collapse of the economy by keeping rates lower and stayed away from premature tightening". Speaking on the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), Das said that RBI wants to iron out all aspects related to it before its launch. He said that the e-rupee launch was a landmark moment in the history of currency in the country and it will transform the way business is done and the way transactions are conducted. On Tuesday, the RBI launched a trial of the digital rupee. Rupee has behaved in an orderly manner, says RBI Governor

The rupee plunged by 30 paise and touched 68.22 against US dollar. This was following strong dollar demand and investment outflows from the country against the backdrop of buoyant dollar sentiment largely kept home currency under immense pressure. 
 
Besides, the rupee also plummeted due to demand for the American unit from importers and corporates. 
 
Indian bourses had a softer start to 2017 as equities were buffeted by concerns surrounding over the post demonetisation drive and upcoming Q3 corporate earnings outlook. 
 
The domestic currency resumed on a weak note at 67.95 from last Friday's closing level of 67.92 in an extremely quiet trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange Market. 
 
But it witnessed a sudden bout of volatility in mid- afternoon deals and drifted down to hit an intra-day low of 68.25 before ending at 68.22, revealing a steep loss of 30 paise, or 0.44 per cent. 
 
Meanwhile, the rupee finished the year-2016 with a 2.68 percent annual fall, scripting its sixth consecutive years of decline against the greenback. 
 
A large part of the outperformance was attributed to heavy capital outflows during the fag-end of the year, although it rebounded after plunging to historic lows. 
 Hedge funds and overseas investors have pulled out a massive USD 4 billion from the Indian capital market in December following rate hike by the <keyword id="6356435" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-Federal-reserve">US Federal Reserve</keyword>.

Rupee slides to 68.22, here’s why

The <keyword id="6355302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rupee" source="Orion">rupee</keyword> on Monday touched a high of 83.01 against the US dollar ahead of the key <keyword id="137604" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="federal-reserve-bank" source="Orion">Federal Reserve Bank</keyword> meeting this week. The rupee opened at 82.57 but touched a high of 83.01 during intraday trade. It eventually closed at 82.74. Analysts are hoping that US Federal Reserve chairman <keyword id="1727754" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jerome-powell" source="Orion">Jerome Powell</keyword> may be less hawkish while reviewing key rates. Traders are also awaiting the manufacturing <keyword id="104215" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pmi" source="Orion">PMI</keyword> and trade deficit data, which is expected to be released on Tuesday as it may significantly impact the rupee movement. Rupee touches 83.01 against dollar amid key rate hike expectations by US Fed

But I can't tell you sitting here that I thought that was necessary."The Fed regulation on 'total loss-absorbing capacity' means banks must have cash on hand to cover writing off 18% or more of 'risk-weighted' assets in the event of a loss. That means Wells Fargo will have to add billions to its balance sheet in cash reserves.Stumpf isn't the first Wells Fargo executive to sound off on the Federal Reserve's latest requirement, which is particularly onerous for the biggest bank in the US by market capitalization. Last month, Wells Fargo CFO John Shrewsberry called the bank <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/wells-fargo-must-issue-about-40-billion-in-debt-to-meet-requirement-1446819110">"victims" of the Fed's new rule.</a>Stumpf was quick to point out that Wells Fargo and other firms have already shored up cash reserves."The industry has more than doubled its capital [reserves]," he told Tausche. The biggest bank in the US is miffed at the Federal Reserve

<keyword id="35140" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword> <keyword id="6484188" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex">Sensex</keyword> and <keyword id="6354813" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="nifty">Nifty</keyword> surged high in the intra-day trade today, but the gains were capped as the US central bank terminated its stimulus programme. Nifty was 18 points (0.23%) higher at 8109.10, touching a high of 8112.65 and a low of 8085.20 in the early trade. 
 The US dollar jumped to a three-week high against the yen after the <keyword id="6356435" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="US-Federal-reserve">US Federal Reserve</keyword> ended its quantitative easing programme. 
 
"We expect a highly volatile session today (Thursday). First, we shall be seeing participants reacting to the Fed meeting outcome in early trade followed by the F&amp;O expiry," says Jayant Manglik, President-retail distribution, Religare Securities Limited. 
 
"Besides, the Nifty index closed near the psychological barrier of 8,100 so we can't ignore the possibility of profit taking prior to next directional move," he added.

If you are very particular about the latest trends, keep your eyes open while picking up the pieces. During the sales, old stocks (at least a season or two old) are also on offer. But surely, you would not like to buy those. Buying trendy clothes during sales has another negative, too. 9. Thou shall be fittingly dressed and well fed

The decision by the <keyword id="6356435" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="Orion">US Federal Reserve</keyword> to raise the interest rate by 0.75 percentage points, the highest on-shot increase since 1994, to tackle inflation that is at its highest in 40 years, also weighed on the stocks. The rate hike was announced at the end of the two-day policy meeting of the <keyword id="45672" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fed" source="Orion">Fed</keyword>. Sensex sheds 1,000 points and Nifty 331 as fear of a recession looms

New Delhi [<keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>], February 5 (ANI): The Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) in its February review meeting is expected to again put a pause on the repo rate, according to <keyword id="20112035" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sbi-research" source="keywords">SBI Research</keyword>. In its December meeting, the RBI unanimously decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent, thus maintaining the status quo for the fifth straight time. The repo rate is the rate of interest at which RBI lends to other banks. "We expect the RBI to continue pause stance in upcoming policy. Strong US non-farm payroll data and wages seem to have pushed back on market expectations for a quick pivot to rate cuts," said the research report Ecowrap as a prelude before the three-day RBI meeting that starts Tuesday. The reports said that the first repo rate rate cut could be on the table from June 2024. "Aug'24 looks the best bet now...," it said. The RBI typically conducts six bimonthly meetings in a financial year, where it deliberates interest rates, money supply, inflation outlook, and various macroeconomic indicators. A relative decline in inflation, barring the latest spike, and its potential for further decline may have prompted the central bank to put the brake on the key interest rate. Inflation has been a concern for many countries, including advanced economies, but India has largely managed to steer its inflation trajectory quite well. Barring the latest pauses, the RBI raised the repo rate by 250 basis points cumulatively to 6.5 per cent since May 2022 in the fight against inflation. Raising interest rates is a monetary policy instrument that typically helps suppress demand in the economy, thereby helping the inflation rate decline. The retail inflation in India though is in RBI's 2-6 per cent comfort level but is above the ideal 4 per cent scenario. In December, it was 5.69 per cent. The <keyword id="19901377" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="keywords">US Federal Reserve</keyword> in its January meeting voted to leave the key interest rate unchanged at 5.25-5.50 per cent, keeping the policy rate unchanged for the fourth straight time on a trot. The US monetary policy committee in its statement said that the recent indicators suggested that economic activity has been expanding at a solid pace. <keyword id="19951097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-fed" source="keywords">US Fed</keyword> had raised interest rates from near zero to now 5.25-5.50 per cent in the fight against inflation, post-COVID. The free fall in the global cryptocurrency market continued on Thursday as over $275 billion were wiped off from its global market cap within 24 hours and Bitcoin dropped to nearly $27,000 - a level it saw in December 2020. The global cryptocurrency market cap reached the $1.25 trillion mark, down 13 per cent in the last 24 hours. Bitcoin accounts for about a third of the cryptocurrency market. The global crypto mayhem was triggered by the total collapse of Terra Luna cryptocurrency that was linked to the US dollar. Tether (USDT) cryptocurrency dropped to 97 cents, losing its parity with US dollars. According to <keyword id="11929735" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="coindesk" source="Orion">CoinDesk</keyword>, traders sold USDT for US dollars amid poor sentiment for stablecoins in crypto communities. Also, rising inflation across the globe have left investors worried over the looming economic slowdown. Ethereum also dropped around 20 per cent in the past 24 hours. Bitcoin investors are likely to lose up to $545 million this year, owing to various reasons like forgetting passwords to their wallets or making a mistake in recording their "seed phrases", according to a new report. A seed phrase is a series of words generated by your cryptocurrency wallet that give you access to the crypto associated with that wallet. Analysts have estimated that at least 20 per cent of all Bitcoin is lost and that the majority of those funds are irretrievably lost. According to research from CryptoAssetRecovery.com, between $272 million to $545 million of Bitcoin will be lost this year.
