New Delhi, May 26 () <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> on Tuesday said it has partnered Vodafone Idea and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to allow <keyword id="1094150" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Feature-phone">feature phone</keyword> users to recharge their numbers using UPI. "Paytm is now empowering feature phone users to recharge for their Vodafone Idea numbers with just a valid UPI ID. Along with the telecom major and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to extend this service throughout the country," Paytm said in a statement. The move would help crore of citizens who mostly use feature mobile phones to now top up their numbers without having the need to visit physical stores, it added. Paytm said that this service is based on the NPCI's payment service *99# which works on the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) channel. This service allows mobile banking transactions using basic feature phones without the need of having a mobile internet data facility for using USSD based banking. "There are over 550 million feature phone users in the country. A majority of them are migrants and daily wage earners. Due to the ongoing lockdown, many people who rely mainly on mobile phone stores, recharge kiosks are finding it difficult to top-up their basic feature phones which rarely have internet data facility," Paytm Senior Vice President Abhay Sharma said. Praveena Rai, chief operating officer of NPCI said the USSD-based service would facilitate feature phone users having a UPI ID to keep in touch with their near and dear ones even if they don't find mobile recharge shops in their localities. "The USSD service would also help people register their UPI IDs on BHIM UPI and provide them with a seamless mobile recharge experience," Rai added. Avneesh Khosla, Director-Marketing of Vodafone Idea Ltd said in the last two months, the company has launched a slew of initiatives to help consumers stay connected. "We believe that this partnership with Paytm will help facilitate a large number of our digitally unconnected customers to recharge through USSD without being dependent on mobile internet, any digital app, or a physical retail touchpoint," he added. If a customer's UPI ID is not registered with BHIM UPI, they then need to dial *99# after which they are shown all bank accounts linked with the mobile number from where the USSD is dialled in. The customer then selects the bank account he wants to register his UPI ID with and sets up a UPI PIN.

Following his announcement in December 2021, the RBI governor has now delivered the promise of bringing the simplified digital payment service to non-smart mobile phones in India. The UPI payment system was limited to smartphones with internet connectivity till now. While UPI turned out to be a hit for fuelling digital payments in the country, its accessibility to the masses with feature phones was awaited for a long time. “While we have been growing impressively in digital payments, a large part of digitisation is limited to people with smartphones. There are about 40 crore <keyword id="1094150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="feature-phone" source="Orion">feature phone</keyword> users who have limited access to digital payments," said T Rabi Sankar, RBI deputy governor. UPI is a platform developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) together with the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks Association (IBA). It is a platform that brings together various banking services and features in a single app. Users have a unique UPI ID that can be used to send and receive payments using a secure PIN. These payments can be made using a mobile number associated with the UPI ID as well. Digital payment via UPI is not only safe, but it fastens and simplifies the way we send and receive money. It also makes payments seamless for new age app-based food delivery, ride-hailing, e-commerce and similar services. In the calendar year 2021, UPI touched record high transactions, both in volume and value terms. <ul><li>Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch a new digital payment solution called <keyword id="11766571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-RUPI">e-RUPI</keyword>.</li><li>Banks will issue electronic vouchers for customers to redeem welfare benefits without having to share bank account details.</li><li>The <keyword id="11772195" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-voucher">e-voucher</keyword> solution has the potential to eliminate fraud and corruption.</li></ul>The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi will be launching 'e-RUPI', an electronic voucher-based digital payment solution at 4:30 p.m IST on Monday. The person-specific, and purpose-specific, payment solution is developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on its Unified Payment Interface (UPI) platform in collaboration with the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Health Authority. What is e-RUPI? According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, e-RUPI is a cashless and contactless digital payment e-voucher in the form of a QR code or SMS string delivered to the beneficiary's mobile phone. The e-voucher can be redeemed at the service provider without needing a card, digital payment app or internet banking service. The e-RUPI is a one-time payment mechanism that does not require any physical interface for transactions and is considered safe as it's prepaid in nature. It ensures that the payment to the service provider is made only after the transaction is completed without involving any intermediary. How is e-RUPI different from a virtual currency? e-RUPI can be used to make payments to a specific person, for a specific purpose, and is not transferable. On the other hand, a virtual or digital currency is just like normal currency but in digital form and can be used for any transaction. How are these vouchers issued? The vouchers will be issued by partner banks but the bank account details of the beneficiary are not needed. NPCI has built the e-RUPI system on its UPI platform and anyone who needs to issue the voucher would need to approach partner banks with issuing authority. Entities giving the e-RUPI voucher will have to submit the details of specific beneficiaries and the purpose of the payment to the banks. The beneficiary's identification will be based on their mobile number and name. What's the need for e-RUPI? The Indian government says that e-RUPI is expected to ensure a leak-proof delivery of welfare services and minimise fraud and corruption. Since it removes the middlemen and there's no direct cash involved, it eliminates the possibility of the fund being used for a purpose other than intended. It can be used for delivering services under government welfare schemes like drugs and nutritional support under Mother and Child welfare schemes, TB eradication programmes, drugs and diagnostics under schemes like Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, fertiliser subsidies etc. Not only government schemes but the voucher can also be used by the private sector for employee welfare and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. e-RUPI explained —  India’s new electronic voucher-based payment system to reduce leakage in welfare programmes

New Delhi, May 10 () The coronavirus lockdown has brought a sea change in the buying behaviour of many Indians, such as purchasing vegetables and other consumables without asking for prices, far from the old habit of asking 'dhaniya' or 'mirchi' free from vendors, according to a survey by Enormous Brands. The web-based survey, conducted between March 30 and April 22, took feedback from 3,737 respondents in cities including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune and Ahmedabad. It found that there has also been a sharp increase in adoption of digital technology by older people to join the e-commerce bandwagon for ordering items like milk, grocery and home essentials and paying through wallets and UPI. The study also found that COVID–19 has helped in forming an opinion for pushing the 'Make in India' agenda, with 42 per cent believing that "there is an active and deliberate attempt by China to spread COVID across the world for economic gains" which has led to a strong anti-China sentiment. "The stay-at-home mandate has changed the behavior and attitudes of many Indians. Indians who were born and brought up asking for 'dhaniya' or 'mirchi' free from the vegetable vendors are now buying vegetables and other consumables without asking the prices. Stay-at-home orders have thus caused visible major shifts in people's behavior," said the survey. Around 42 per cent of respondents claimed they buy vegetables and other consumables without asking for prices, which is a drastic shift from a universal value-conscious, penny pinching Indian mentality, it added. The Enormous Brands surevy also found that India's older population adopted digital technology faster during the lockdown, with as much as 47 per cent higher adoption among elders (55-65 years) of e-commerce for ordering milk, grocery and home essentials and paying through wallets/UPI. "The banks have been promoting internet banking for over a decade, in just the last month the data suggest that first time users have increased by 28 per cent. The maximum shift of 33 per cent is among the (elderly) age group," it said. With lockdown forcing people at home, one of the the obvious choices to spend time is television watching. The study found that TV viewership grew from strength to strength during lockdown, shining over OTT platforms. It found that 43 per cent saw cable TV as the primary entertainment in the high-income households and 13 per cent across the sample size re-activated their DTH/cable subscription, it said. "Interestingly, 'news' has emerged as the new GEC (general entertainment category). A staggering 64 per cent of TV viewing time across the TV viewing population is spent on the news channels, while 43 per cent believe that news reporting is unbiased and 27 per cent believe that there is a clear indication that few news channels are pro a particular political party," the survey said. Commenting on the findings, Enormous Brands Managing Partner Ajay Verma said, "The young Indian population is behaving very differently from other parts of the globe. The study suggests a high level of optimism even in a situation that has brought the entire world in a lock-down and also showcased that households feel confident about the revival of the Indian economy." This study was conducted to help brands understand how the current situation is moulding the habits, behaviour and attitudes of Indians, he added. As per the survey, newspapers are poised for a strong return, with 74 per cent of the respondents saying they missed their daily newspaper. While 29 per cent have moved to reading newspapers online, only 4 per cent would unsubscribe from the hard copy. The internet presents a whole host of options and opportunities — however, the digital landscape is also getting more dangerous by the day. Cybersecurity firm <keyword id="970707" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SonicWall">SonicWall</keyword> claims that cyber attacks are getting more targeted in 2020. “Cybercriminals are honing their ability to design, author and deploy stealth-like attacks with increasing precision while growing their capabilities to evade detection by sandbox technology,” said SonicWall President and CEO Bill Conner. On Safer Internet Day, a survey done by OLX shows that more than half of Indian internet users neglect basic cybersecurity safety practices. It points out that 52% of the respondents shared their numbers or personal addresses on public forums online. Another 26% admitted to sharing their one-time passwords (OTPs) with others. The remaining 22% have shared bank account numbers, UPI pins, credit and credit card details.

Cybersecurity firm SophosLabs points out that ransomware attacks are increasing and getting better at slipping past security measures. “The creators of ransomware have a pretty good grasp of how security software works and adapt their attacks accordingly. While the company did not elaborate of any specific instances, the latest assertion comes against the backdrop of reports that suggested Google Pay has launched fixed deposit offerings in partnership with a bank. The company emphasised that in every geography where Google Pay is present, its stance is consistently one of partnering with the existing financial services and banking systems to help scale and enable frictionless delivery of financial products and services and contribute to the goal of financial inclusion. In a blogpost, <keyword id="45395" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-india" source="Orion">Google India</keyword> said there have been a few instances where these offerings have been reported as 'Google Pay's offerings' which "fuels misinterpretation". "To be clear, we have always looked at our role firmly as a partner to the existing financial ecosystem that brings unique skill sets and offerings to drive further adoption of digital payments in the country," it said. According to Google, several of its offerings are built on top of NPCI's pioneering UPI payment network and infrastructure, "which has grown over 190X in the last 4 years, to processing over INR 6 trillion in value today". Furthering that objective, in 2019, "we had announced the launch of the <keyword id="12021446" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spot-platform-on-google-pay" source="Orion">Spot Platform on Google Pay</keyword>, a surface for merchants of all types -- offline or digital native, small or large, across use cases - to find payment-ready users," it noted. The <keyword id="6357247" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internet" source="Orion">internet</keyword> major also noted that its spot platform works as an additional discovery channel for many businesses to build and offer new experiences to users to drive adoption of their services. The use cases span across ticket purchase, food ordering, paying for essential services like utility bills, shopping and getting access to various financial products. Providing a detailed explanation, Google said that many of these Spot experiences especially in the financial products/ service categories -- be it insurance, wealth management, credit or other financial services -- are regulated industries and each merchant is required to be duly authorised to provide those services before they are onboarded onto the platform. "Today we have close to 400 merchant spots on Google Pay, and in this journey, we have seen that financial product offerings perform especially well, with offerings from spot experiences delivered by financial services players like CashE, Groww, 5paisa, Zest Money etc. seeing significant growth and engagement from users on Google Pay," the blogpost said. Also, the company noted that this engagement underscores that payments platforms are a great surface to deliver financial services to users across the country. "As Google Pay, our role is firmly circumscribed to providing these merchants a surface where Google Pay users can discover and gain from these offerings -- be it credit products, insurance or any others... We are committed to play our role by using technology as a means to level social inequalities and contribute to this vision operating within the purview of India's legal and regulatory frameworks," it stated. Earlier this week, Google Pay's partnership with Equitas SFB was announced under which consumers can book fixed deposits fully digitally, without needing to open a savings account with the lender through its 'spot' integrated with the Google Pay platform.
