<ul><li>The <keyword id="6354335" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> has banned regulated institutions from dealing with crypto exchanges.</li><li>The <keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword>'s decision will come into effect in three months from now.</li><li>The move could effectively ban cryptocurrency in India.</li></ul>When online poker first flourished in India, many players couldn't transfer money from their poker accounts to their bank accounts. This, basically meant that win or lose, they could make no liquid cash from playing Poker online. The solution? Players decided to transfer the money amongst themselves within the poker sites. So, if you transferred $300 to my account on website A, I could transfer $300 from my bank to yours. The rationale being, that I was going to put in $300 in my poker account anyway. That can't happen with cryptocurrencies anymore. The RBI today banned regulated institutions from dealing with crypto exchanges. The rule comes into effect three months from now, which is the time these institutions have to get their affairs in order. The move doesn't ban crypto usage in India, but it's almost like a demonetisation of cryptocurrency. Three months hence, you won't be able to perform NEFT, UPI or other transactions with crypto apps and websites, like Unocoin, Zebpay and more. This is two-way, meaning you can neither deposit nor withdraw from such apps and websites. But India also isn't a stranger to cryptocurrency usage. Many have invested in modes like <keyword id="6354947" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="bitcoin">Bitcoin</keyword>, Ethereum etc. In fact, a Bitcoin <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/cryptocurrency-guru-arrested-for-bitcoin-ponzi-schemes-scam-could-run-into-rs-13000-crore/story/274255.html" data-type="tilCustomLink">entrepreneur</a> was recently arrested for scamming investors out of ₹2000 crore (just over $30 million). Will they just lose all these investments? Well, they obviously have three months to transfer these earnings to banks, converting them to cash and hence paying tax. Or, crypto exchanges could just start considering cold hard cash. That should work, at least as long as Demonetisation 2 doesn't happen. For best results, when you want your cryptocurrencies to be exchanged for real money, exchanges will have to deliver cash to you. And if you think this is an impossible scenario, there's a case study already available. Human Cash Haulers An <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/3067778/the-blockchain-is-going-to-save-immigrants-millions-in-remittance-fees">app called Abra</a> employs "human tellers" to transfer money across the world, using the crypto medium. Unlike crypto exchanges, <keyword id="3110208" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abra">Abra</keyword> operates like a regular e-wallet. Users load cash onto their wallets, which they can transfer to others. Abra, in turn, converts the money to cryptocurrency and uses the blockchain to transfer it across the world, or just a few metres away. The receiver has to find a human teller near him, which can be an individual or business, and take the amount in local currency. Think of them as Crypto Angadias - the traditional Indian community of human couriers from <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword> who haul cash for the diamond and gold industry in the state by operating furtively between Mumbai and Gujarat. It is said that Angadias carry a few hundred crore rupees worth of high-value goods and cash between Mumbai and Gujarat everyday. For a cash-rich country like India, could this be a solution to continue crypto usage within our borders. RBI wants its own cryptocurrency Interestingly, while the government seems keen to ban cryptocurrencies, the RBI doesn't seem to have given up on the idea of floating one of its own. The apex bank has set up a panel to implement India's own fiat cryptocurrency, that's regulated and dispersed by banks. While that may break the core philosophy of crypto modes like Bitcoin, i.e, democratising currencies, it could help reduce the cost of printing bills. It would also be in line with the government's push to promote digital payments in the country. While the RBI's ruling may have effectively banned the use of cryptocurrencies in India, the country doesn't seem ready to give up on it yet.

It also has some limitations like it can't offer financial products of their own as a business entity, but it can act as a business correspondent and partner with other financial institutions and banks to offer loans, fixed deposits, insurances and mutual funds. Paytm Payments bank is also providing customers with a physical cheque book and Passbook on request but <keyword id="2939236" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satti">Satti</keyword> says that they will always be digital-first, “We have created a customer-centric product which will be easy to adopt on mobile. India’s first mobile bank with zero-fee online transactions and no minimum balance is on your Paytm app

In what is being seen as a tough competition to Paytm, tech giant <keyword id="6355629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> today announced Tez - a mobile app for digital payments and commerce. Built on the Indian government-supported Unified Payments Interface, the app allows users to do financial transactions like sending money, receiving payments directly into their bank accounts and paying bills. The users can link the app to their bank accounts. The app was built for India, working on the vast majority of the country’s smartphones and available in English and seven Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Gujrati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu). The app is available now for download on Google Play (Android) and the App Store (iOS). New Delhi, Two men were arrested for allegedly duping people by hacking food and grocery delivery app <keyword id="19896956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="keywords">Swiggy</keyword> account, a Delhi Police official said on Monday. The accused were identified as <keyword id="20480275" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aniket" source="keywords">Aniket</keyword> Kalra (25), and Himanshu Kumar (23), both residents of <keyword id="19921445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gurugram" source="keywords">Gurugram</keyword>, Haryana. According to police, the duo was using 'Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system to hack Swiggy accounts of the victims. The official said that after hacking the account, the accused used to place orders from the victims account and then used to sell the grocery products at a lower price. Their arrest came after a woman complainant, a resident of Sultanpur was cheated of Rs 97,197 by some unknown persons from her Lazy Pay account linked with Swiggy account. During the investigation, technical analysis of call details and money transaction was made and it was found that complainant received a call in late night hours from an Automated Telephony Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System and she was told in Pre-Recorded Voice Responses that somebody is trying to access her Swiggy account. Thereafter, her Swiggy account was hacked and online orders of Rs 97,197 were placed using her Lazypay account linked with Swiggy. "Further, CDR analysis of the calling number revealed that the mobile number from which the complainant received the call is an application based generated number connected with IVR System. Simultaneously, details from Swiggy were obtained and it came to notice that the alleged orders were delivered in Gurugram," said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Ankit Chauhan. The mobile number used for delivering the products was found registered on fake ownership. "The team worked on all the available aspects of the case. The efforts of the team bore fruits when during IMEI search, the location of suspect was zeroed in Sector 7, Gurugram, Haryana," said the <keyword id="19916219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dcp" source="keywords">DCP</keyword>. Raids were conducted and Aniket and Himanshu were apprehended. On interrogation, Aniket disclosed that he used to work as a delivery boy in Zomato and Swiggy. "Thereafter, he started buying grocery items from online selling platform at lower price through offers and then used to sell them in the market, thus saving 5 per cent-10 per cent on every order. Further, he along with co-accused <keyword id="20646636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ansh" source="keywords">Ansh</keyword>, a resident of Punjab met on telegram and they both started duping people through IVR Calling system," said the DCP. Ansh has the data of people who have linked their credit card/debit card/internet banking with their Swiggy account. "Ansh used to target victims by hacking their Swiggy account through pre-recorded voice responses and thereby accessing confidential data of victims. Then Aniket used to link a phone number registered on fake ownership with the Swiggy account of the victim and then used to place orders of Grocery items for as much amount as available in the account of the victim," said the DCP. The random addresses of Gurugram were provided for delivery of items to avoid any police action. "Aniket and his friend Himanshu used to sell the grocery items in the local market at discounted price and then used to send 50 per cent profit to Ansh via cash depositing machines or various UPI Id's," said the DCP. Himanshu owns a medical shop in Gurugram and under the guise of a medical shop he was involved in transferring the cheated amounts to various UPI IDs and accounts. "Further investigation of the case is in progress to trace the co-accused and to link other cases," the DCP added.

Hackers place order of over ₹97k from victim's Swiggy account, two held

New Delhi, Mar 6 () Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) on Friday restricted transaction settlements, including those done through UPI platform, into cash-strapped Yes Bank's accounts. The decision by PPBL follows the Reserve Bank of India's move to cap withdrawals from Yes Bank accounts at Rs 50,000 per depositor for a month and imposed strict limits on operations at the country's fourth-largest private lender that faced "regular outflow of liquidity" after an effort to raise new capital failed. "Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) today (Friday) announced that they are restricting transaction settlements, including UPI, into Yes Bank accounts to safeguard their users' money," PPBL said in a statement. Yes Bank has been seeking funding since last year to bolster its financial ratios and quell questions about its stability due to its exposure to the non-banking financial company sector entangled in a prolonged crunch in the local credit market. "While third-party apps that rely on Yes Bank have also been affected, the UPI ecosystem has been designed in a way where customers can continue using other UPI apps to transact on UPI. Paytm customers continue to use Paytm UPI and wallet service without any interruption as before," the statement said. The Indian banking system is currently under stress due to rising non-performing assets (NPAs) and other issues, it added. The case of restrictions on Yes Bank is second within a year after the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank crisis in September 2019. PPBL said that in a scenario where banks have been facing crisis in India, payment banks are safe and offer more safety and security to the deposited money. Earlier in the day, PPBL took a dig on its rival PhonePe in the wake of obstruction it faced due to using cash-strapped Yes Bank's platform for transactions. It said payments banks are not allowed to lend and, therefore, do not have the problem of NPAs. PPBL also added that such banks have to necessarily invest 75 per cent of customers' deposit money into government securities, which is the safest form of investment. "Safety and security of our users' money are of utmost importance to us. We have stopped all transactions in Yes Bank accounts so that the money doesn't get blocked. We are also requesting users to change their primary bank account to some other bank. However, these restrictions are temporary in nature till the time we get more clarity on the situation," Satish Gupta, managing director and chief executive officer of PPBL, said. PRS HRS

While the company did not elaborate of any specific instances, the latest assertion comes against the backdrop of reports that suggested Google Pay has launched fixed deposit offerings in partnership with a bank. The company emphasised that in every geography where Google Pay is present, its stance is consistently one of partnering with the existing financial services and banking systems to help scale and enable frictionless delivery of financial products and services and contribute to the goal of financial inclusion. In a blogpost, <keyword id="45395" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-india" source="Orion">Google India</keyword> said there have been a few instances where these offerings have been reported as 'Google Pay's offerings' which "fuels misinterpretation". "To be clear, we have always looked at our role firmly as a partner to the existing financial ecosystem that brings unique skill sets and offerings to drive further adoption of digital payments in the country," it said. According to Google, several of its offerings are built on top of NPCI's pioneering UPI payment network and infrastructure, "which has grown over 190X in the last 4 years, to processing over INR 6 trillion in value today". Furthering that objective, in 2019, "we had announced the launch of the <keyword id="12021446" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spot-platform-on-google-pay" source="Orion">Spot Platform on Google Pay</keyword>, a surface for merchants of all types -- offline or digital native, small or large, across use cases - to find payment-ready users," it noted. The <keyword id="6357247" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internet" source="Orion">internet</keyword> major also noted that its spot platform works as an additional discovery channel for many businesses to build and offer new experiences to users to drive adoption of their services. The use cases span across ticket purchase, food ordering, paying for essential services like utility bills, shopping and getting access to various financial products. Providing a detailed explanation, Google said that many of these Spot experiences especially in the financial products/ service categories -- be it insurance, wealth management, credit or other financial services -- are regulated industries and each merchant is required to be duly authorised to provide those services before they are onboarded onto the platform. "Today we have close to 400 merchant spots on Google Pay, and in this journey, we have seen that financial product offerings perform especially well, with offerings from spot experiences delivered by financial services players like CashE, Groww, 5paisa, Zest Money etc. seeing significant growth and engagement from users on Google Pay," the blogpost said. Also, the company noted that this engagement underscores that payments platforms are a great surface to deliver financial services to users across the country. "As Google Pay, our role is firmly circumscribed to providing these merchants a surface where Google Pay users can discover and gain from these offerings -- be it credit products, insurance or any others... We are committed to play our role by using technology as a means to level social inequalities and contribute to this vision operating within the purview of India's legal and regulatory frameworks," it stated. The bank, however, said that the pandemic situation had a minimal impact on its books in FY 2019-20 as the nationwide lockdown was imposed in the last few days of March, by which time most of bank's collections had already come. The 2019-20 annual report said the lockdown "did impact the typically high year-end growth momentum of March, and our volumes stood lower than that envisaged earlier and significantly lower than that in the previous month, which affected the interest and fee income". The surplus liquidity carried as a buffer for the crisis period has led to a slight increase in finance cost for the last week of March, it said. "Although we shall continue to accrue interest income on the outstanding portfolio including those accounts that opt for moratorium, there will be an overall contraction in interest income and fee income on account of lower business volumes due to lockdown and adherence to social distancing norms," the bank said in it outlook for 2020-21. However, the bank said it expects a steady reduction in cost of funds due to the several stimulus measures of the RBI to enhance liquidity in the banking system. The lender added that the impact on credit cost remains to be seen at the end of the moratorium and the end of dispensation on NPA (non-performing assets) classification at the end of August 2020. Citing customer surveys, Ujjivan SFB said there have been temporary dip in household income levels in the wake of COVID-19 crisis and addressing the credit needs of this segment would help customers resurrect their businesses and livelihoods. "Given the ongoing crisis situation, we visualise it to be a good time to sensitise our customers and their families on basic savings and banking behaviour and promote goal based deposits, as our deposit rates remain attractive," it said. The bank said as digital payments have increased due to the pandemic, Ujjivan considers it as a good opportunity to expand initiatives and increase adoption to digital channels. "Our continued efforts on contactless and digital banking services will stand us in a good stead to further our outreach and build on this opportunity. Moreover, the volatility in the market yields is expected to help in the growth of institutional deposits," it said. Going forward, bank's strategy would be to manage the effects of lockdown and it will set in motion initiatives such as curtailing credit cost, re-starting business with repeat clients, scaling deposits and Sampoorna banking business. Bank's Sampoorna Family Banking solution was launched to address every household's comprehensive banking requirements, ranging from the youngest member to the senior citizens. The bank said it will also penetrate into new geographies and further push the growth of rural banking. "We will also introduce consumer durable loan, micro loan against property and use an analytics-based model to graduate group loan customers. Additionally, we will simplify our digital pre-approved loan process with the help of data analytics and expand our UPI QR based payment solutions for merchants via UPI acquirer platform and our UPI PSP Mobile app," Ujjivan SFB said in the report. Besides, the lender said that it will step up its cashless repayment further through its Money Mitra initiative and will offer banking services from neighbourhood shops and pilot cash collection points. "We are also planning to launch a voice-, video- and vernacular-based, easily navigable mobile banking app for microfinance customers to drive digital usage," it said. Moving ahead, the bank will expand the product base with new channels of loan EMI payment via popular and easy-to-use platforms -- Popular UPI apps, BBPS, CCAvenue and Billdesk and use of BC and digital pre-approved individual loans via phone banking and mobile app, it said. Also, the bank will concentrate on semi-formal and formal MSME segments, led by its diversified product offering and relationship based approach. Further, the bank said it plans to launch fintech partnerships in supply chain finance domain to provide an additional lead channel and will also introduce digital onboarding platform for improved delivery processes. During 2019-20, Ujjivan SFB registered a 28 per cent growth in its gross advances at Rs 14,153 crore as on March 30, 2020. Deposits of the bank were up by 46 per cent at Rs 10,780 crore while the retail deposits rose 73 per cent to Rs 4,724 crore. Bank's total income in FY20 jumped by 49 per cent to Rs 3,026 crore, earning net profit of Rs 350 crore, which was higher by 76 per cent from a year ago. Ujjivan SFB, which began its operations in Februray 2017, got listed into the capital market in December 2019, which was termed as one of the most subscribed IPOs in 2019. The bank with its branches spanning across 24 states and union territories had a customer base of 54.4 lakh as on March 31, 2020.

Mumbai, Mar 7 () Fintech startup PayNearby, which has a tie-up with Yes Bank to offers cardless and pinless ATM services to customers, on Saturday said its systems are running without any disruptions.The statement comes in the wake of disruption of Unified Payment Interface (UPI) offered by fintech players after Yes Bank was put under moratorium by the RBI.The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a moratorium on the bank and restricted withdrawals to Rs 50,000 per depositor till April 3.Following the restriction, the net banking facility of the bank was affected and customers were not able to log in."At PayNearby, its business as usual. Sarvatra said as the government has announced the Rs 1.7 lakh crore financial support to the needy due to coronavirus pandemic, its AePS (Aadhar enabled Payment System) platform has witnessed an exponential rise of 353 per cent in cash withdrawals. Sarvatra's wide range of offerings have also enabled other financial institutions such as BCs (business correspondents) to successfully extend money transfer and cash disbursal services. The financial services provider said money transactions through its platform are serving customers of over 600 small co-operatives, district as well as scheduled commercial banks apart from small finance banks in the 30 states and union territories during the pandemic. The list also has large banks like ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, besides new generation small finance banks like Equitas, Jana and Capital, it added. "In the 30 days of lockdown, in addition to transactions conducted at regular ATM machines, hundreds of mobile ATM Vans and thousands of micro ATMs of our banks have provided doorstep banking services across India to 15 lakh unique customers, including senior citizens," said Mandar Agashe, founder and managing director, Sarvatra Technologies. Banking in the rural areas where Sarvatra provides its PaaS (platform as a service) services has remained unaffected in the midst of the lockdown.
