About 4.5 million televisions were shipped to <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> in the first half of 2023 with an increase of 8 per cent on a yearly basis. According to a report by International Data Corporation (<keyword id="6377157" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="idc" source="Orion">IDC</keyword>), frequent sales by e-tailers, multiple new launches, and clearing of old inventory before the festive season starts, fuelled the growth. IDC expects 2023 to remain flat or register single-digit growth led by the upcoming festive season. A plethora of offers or discounts are expected to ensure a healthy second half of the year. Share of the online channel grew by 25 per cent in 2023 year-on-year reaching 39 per cent driven by online sales festivals, the global market intelligence and advisory services provider IDC said in the report. "Due to decreasing prices, consumers are opting to buy an affordable smart TV instead of retrofitting non-smart TV with a streaming stick, which is losing popularity, its shipments declining by 85 per cent in 1H23," said <keyword id="3886166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upasana-joshi" source="Orion">Upasana Joshi</keyword>, Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India. While the popular screen sizes of 32-inch and 43-inch remain mainstream with 71 per cent collective share, the larger screens are gaining popularity. Share of the 55-inch, according to IDC, went up to 12 per cent from 9 per cent a year ago, resulting in 35 per cent YoY growth in the USD 400+ price segment. In the first half of 2023, the average selling price of smart TVs stood at USD 380, a 3 per decline from last year. IDC said brands are focusing on low-priced models in the budget segment with regular price drops. "Apart from core features, visual aesthetics like narrow bezel or bezel-less TVs in the affordable price segments and features like HDR, better DCI-P3 coverage, Dolby certification, improved sound output etc. are in demand," says <keyword id="5792358" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="debasish-jana" source="Orion">Debasish Jana</keyword>, Market Analyst, Smart Home Devices, IDC India. India smart TV market grew 8% in first half of 2023

<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s wearable market shipped a record 48.1 million units in the third quarter this year, a 29.2 per cent year-over-year (YoY) growth, a new report showed on Wednesday. Apart from the new smartwatch and earwear models, smart rings became prominent in the third quarter, according to the data from International Data Corporation (IDC). The smart ring category is generating a lot of interest from consumers, particularly due to the interesting form factor and several launches in the past few months. "Smart rings add novelty to the wearable device space, with brands trying to position it as a fashion accessory and a non-intrusive health device. While currently there are very few models, we can expect more mainstream brands launching more affordable options next year," said <keyword id="3886166" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="upasana-joshi" source="Orion">Upasana Joshi</keyword>, Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India. Ultrahuman led the smart ring category with an impressive 75.5 per cent market share, followed by <keyword id="19504357" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pi-ring" source="Orion">Pi Ring</keyword> at 10.9 per cent, and boAt (<keyword id="6494266" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="imagine-marketing" source="Orion">Imagine Marketing</keyword>) with an 8.2 per cent market share in the third quarter. Overall, the domestic wearable market shipped 105.9 million units in the first three quarters of 2023, which is more than 100.1 million units shipped in 2022. The overall average selling price (ASPs) declined by 20.4 per cent from $27.2 to $21.7. "Brands have upped the game with high-end specifications at entry-level pricing. This combined with high-decibel marketing campaigns and promotions will drive Q4 shipments, resulting in strong double digit annual growth in 2023," said <keyword id="218502" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vikas-sharma" source="Orion">Vikas Sharma</keyword>, senior market analyst, <keyword id="1531471" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wearable-devices" source="Orion">Wearable Devices</keyword>, IDC India. boAt (Imagine Marketing) continued to dominate the overall wearable market with 29.7 per cent share, growing by 19.4 per cent. In <keyword id="5617680" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tws" source="Orion">TWS</keyword> too, it maintained leadership with 37.9 per cent share, 33.3 per cent growth YoY. It stood third in the smartwatch category with 14.2 per cent market share. Noise (Nexxbase) stood second in overall wearables with 10.8 per cent share and flat 0.6 per cent YoY shipment growth. It dropped to second in the smartwatch category with 20.7 per cent market share and maintained its fourth position in the TWS segment at 7.7 per cent share, growing by 20.4 per cent YoY, the report mentioned. Smartwatches remained the fastest growing category with 16.9 million units, growing by 41 per cent YoY as incumbent vendors shipped aggressively to stock for the upcoming festive season. Within wearables, the share of earwear dropped to 64.4 per cent from 67.3 per cent a year ago, but shipments still grew 23.6 per cent to 30.9 million units, according to the report. India's wearable market grows 29.2% in Q3, smart ring category shows promise

In Q2 2023, the share of 5G smartphones in shipments was just 49%. The average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones has decreased to $293. The shipments to online channels grew by 8% year-on-year to reach 50% in Q2 2024, up from 47% in Q2 2023. Due to severe heatwave conditions in several parts of India, offline channel shipments declined by 2% year-on-year in Q2 2024. Indian smartphone market records 7.2% growth in the first half of 2024, Vivo leads the market in Q2

market</h2>Vivo has emerged as the market leader in Q3 2024, with a 15.8% market share, up from a 13.9% market share in Q3 2023. This marks the third consecutive quarter where the smartphone maker has led the Indian smartphone market. Vivo’s shipments have increased by 20% year-on-year. Oppo is second, with a 13.9% market share in Q3 2024, up from a 9.9% market share in Q3 2023. The company’s shipments have increased by 47.6% year-on-year. Samsung, which led the Indian smartphone market in Q3 2023 with a market share of 16.2% has been pushed down to the third spot with a 12.3% market share. The company’s shipments have declined by 19.7% year-on-year. Other notable changes include the increase in Apple’s market share from 5.7% to 8.2%, a decline in OnePlus’ market share from 6.2% to 3.6% and a 149% year-on-year increase in shipments recorded by Motorola. <h2>5G shipments on the rise</h2>The share of 5G shipments increased to 83% in Q3 2024, up from 57% in Q3 2023. Of the 46 million smartphones shipped, 38 million were 5G smartphones. This has been fueled by the decline in the average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones. The ASP has by 20% to $292 (approx. ₹24,650). “Cyclical dip in demand after the festive period and high shipments in 3Q24 will result in higher stock levels across channels in 4Q24. Thus, India's smartphone market is expected to exit 2024 with a low single-digit annual growth,” said Navkendar Singh, AVP – Devices Research, IDC. Indian smartphone shipments grow 5.6% in Q3 2024, Vivo leads the market

In 2023, 146 million smartphones were shipped in the country. While the overall year remained flat, the second half of the year reported a 11% year-on-year growth. According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), consumer demand remained stressed in 2023, leading to excess inventory levels. The year-end showed signs of recovery as Q4 2023 reported a growth of 26% year-on-year with 37 million smartphones shipped in the last quarter. This was partly fuelled by the introduction of new smartphones. “Most brands chose to reduce prices and offer additional channel margins in the last quarter to manage the inventory levels from post festive cyclic dip. The company dominated the super-premium segment which includes smartphones priced above $800 with a market share of 68%. The rout in mobile phone sales in China has affected everyone from local brands like Xiaomi to foreign brands like <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>. In fact, Xiaomi faced a loss of $6.2 billion after experts <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-01-10/xiaomi-woes-deepen-as-three-day-rout-wipes-6-billion-off-stock">projected</a> a further slowdown in China sales. And that may drive these phone makers to the next biggest market, India, which is already a market with hyper competition. At a time when global mobile phone sales are declining, smartphone shipments in India reached an <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/india-smartphone-share/">all-time high</a> in the third quarter of 2018. Top brands in India - including Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo - recorded their highest ever shipments in a single quarter during the local festive season, while the holiday sales in US tanked. The falling Indian rupee had made imports more expensive in dollar terms but that did not affect the sales. Despite that Apple's iPhone shipments over 2018 shrank to half of what they were in 2017 according to Counterpoint, making the last year its worse performance since 2014. The smartphone market has <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/global-smartphone-share/">shrunk </a>3% globally and the US market showed an annual decline of 7% in 2018 <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/us-market-smartphone-share/">according</a> to Counterpoint’s report. The same report has said that the Indian market is going to continue to grow while the Chinese and American markets will decline. The Canalys report further predicted that the situation is only going to worsen estimating another 3% decline in 2019 with sales going below 400 million devices for the first time since 2014 in China. The South Korean brand, Samsung, has taken twice the hit. Not only are its own sales down in China but there’s a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/miscellaneous/a-growing-number-of-companies-are-flashing-a-warning-sign-on-chinas-economy/slidelist/67460024.cms">reduced</a> demand for its chips and screens since its the supplier for Apple and other smartphone manufacturers. India calling As the challenges in US and China mount, it’s an opportunity for Chinese smartphone brands — especially since four of the largest smartphone manufacturers in India are Chinese — in light of the US government’s increased restrictions on companies like Huawei, giving them an additional reason to shift their focus to India. This is great news for Indian consumers as the increased competition is likely to usher in cheaper prices. In India, Samsung and Xiaomi have thrived competing for the top spot for market share. Navkendar Singh and Upasana Joshi from the International Data Corporation <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2018/09/01/chinese-smartphone-makers-are-winning-in-india-the-fastest-growing-market/">told</a> VentureBeat, “A good performance in India could help Xiaomi, OnePlus, Huawei and other Chinese phone makers do better in other global market.” They added, “Those who can sustain and grow their businesses in India prove to the world they can handle large and tough markets.” The ‘Make-in-India’ campaign giving an impetus to foreign manufacturers to set up shop in India is allowing the smartphone brands to keep their <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/made-in-india-apple-iphones-may-get-cheaper-but-they-probably-wont-be-cheap-enough-for-indian-users/articleshow/67285223.cms">prices low</a> with local manufacturing. Indian smartphone market sees a declines in Q2; Vivo in the lead

The average selling price of Indian smartphones has increased despite a flat market

New Delhi, Feb 7 () About 152.5 million smartphones were shipped in India in 2019 registering a "modest" 8 per cent growth over last year, positioning the country as the second-largest smartphone market after China, research firm IDC said on Friday. For 2020, IDC said the Indian smartphone market is expected to see "modest single-digit growth" in the year. According to the IDC data, the overall mobile phone market, with annual shipments of 282.9 million units, declined 12.3 per cent year-on-year in 2019 due to fewer 4G feature phones. Xiaomi registered annual shipments of 43.6 million units in 2019, the highest-ever smartphone shipments made by any brand in a year, with a growth of 9.2 per cent y-o-y and cornered 28.6 per cent market share. Samsung followed in the tally with 20.3 per cent share, vivo (15.6 per cent), Oppo (10.7 per cent) and realme (10.6 per cent). A total of 36.9 million smartphone units were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2019, registering 5.5 per cent year-on-year growth, but a 20.8 per cent sequential decline. In the December quarter, Xiaomi registered a 15.9 per cent y-o-y growth and had 29 per cent share, followed by vivo (18.8 per cent), Samsung (15.5 per cent), Oppo (13 per cent) and realme (12.8 per cent). "This is an extremely exhilarating moment for us at Xiaomi India, as we become the leader in the overall mobile phone market across smartphones and feature phones. It has helped us come closer to our mission of providing innovation for all, and Q4 witnessed several people adopting the smartphone," Xiaomi Vice-President and India Managing Director Manu Jain said. He added that the company is committed to gaining users' sustained trust and appreciation through constant innovation across products, business models and infrastructure. "IDC expects India's smartphone market to see modest single-digit growth in 2020 as well," IDC India Research Director (Client Devices and IPDS) Navkendar Singh said. He added that as organic growth becomes challenging with increasing replacement cycles, it is imperative for the smartphone ecosystem to really put its energy and focus on enabling migration of the massive feature phone user base in India. This needs to be done in addition to continuing to offer compelling propositions at the mid-premium segment to boost faster upgrades, he said. "During the year, we will see launches with newer concepts like under-display cameras, gaming-centric features, and higher refresh rate screens clubbed with efforts by the brands to open new revenue areas like OS monetisation and financing services etc," he added. IDC said the year 2019 also witnessed longer inventory cycles in the offline channel as online exclusive models held back offline sales, resulting in a meagre 1.6 per cent annual growth in the offline channel. "The online growth momentum continued through the year with a record share of 41.7 per cent in 2019, growing by 18.4 per cent y-o-y annually due to deep discounts, cashback offers, buyback/exchange schemes, and complete protection offers clubbed with attractive financing schemes like no-cost EMIs across major model line-ups and brands," IDC India Associate Research Manager (Client Devices) Upasana Joshi said. In 2019, the average selling prices (ASPs) of smartphones rose 2.8 per cent y-o-y to USD 163 (about Rs 11,600). The sub-USD 200 segment still accounted for 79 per cent of the market. The mid-range segment of USD 200-500 accounted for the strongest annual growth of 55.2 per cent and accounted for 19.3 per cent of the overall smartphone market. The mid-premium (USD 300-500) segment was led by vivo with 28 per cent share, followed by OnePlus at 20.2 per cent. In the premium (USD 500 and above) segment, Apple surpassed Samsung for the leadership position with a share of 47.4 per cent in 2019, driven by aggressive price drops on previous generation models, offers, strong e-tailer sales momentum, and a lower iPhone 11 launch price compared to the iPhone XR, IDC said. The feature phone segment continued to decline y-o-y by 21.1 per cent with shipments of 30.1 million units in the fourth quarter. A rise in projects under implementation as well as a decline in the number of stalled projects point towards the fact that there is a pickup in economic activities. 
 Data released by independent economy tracker <keyword id="6493461" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="CMIE">CMIE</keyword> showed an 8.4per cent rise in projects under implementation in the quarter ended June 30, fastest since the September 2012 quarter. 
 Private sector projects under implementation rose 0.8 per cent in the June quarter, the first expansion in eight quarters, providing boost to the <keyword id="6387077" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi-government">Narendra Modi government</keyword> that has faced criticism of late for a slackening of reforms. 
 "Bottom line from this quarter's release is that the data looks encouraging with projects under implementation improving for the fourth quarter," <keyword id="48670" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Morgan-Stanley">Morgan Stanley</keyword> noted in a report analysing the CMIE data. 
 
Another report said the stock of stalled projects has declined for the fifth successive quarter. 
 From a peak of 8.4 per cent of <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword> in the quarter ended March 31, 2014, stalled projects' stock declined to 6.6 per cent in June 2015 quarter, helped by the government's emphasis on capital spending at the start of the new fiscal. 
 "Since March 2014, projects worth about 2 per cent of GDP have been installed. Progressing steadily, they have now reached a critical mass and can potentially start impacting domestic activity notably," <keyword id="6358584" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HSBC">HSBC</keyword> noted in a report, which however also noted that new projects were conspicuous by their absence. This view is consistent with a rise in production of capital goods as per <keyword id="6427912" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="IIP">IIP</keyword> data. 
 
Investments worth Rs 1.15 lakh crore were announced during the June quarter, a 33 per cent rise from a year ago but on a weak base, CMIE had said on July 1. 
 
Also, the first quarter of fiscal 2015-16 saw around 165 projects getting scrapped, which is up from 106 projects stalled in June 2014 quarter. 
 
A heavily indebted private sector has largely been unable to step up investment in the face of weak demand while banks, struggling with bad loans, are finding it difficult to cut rates or lend more to stimulate consumption.

"Broad-based recovery seems far off. There might be green shoots here but both domestic and external demand remains extremely weak. There are noisy signals in the economy. Private investments will still take time to pick up. We should see action in the infra sector, which should push investment, but the financial institutions data does not reflect that. Who would lend to the infra sector at this juncture," said DK Joshi, chief economist, Crisil. 
 
Morgan Stanley says recent government action should sustain the revival in capital expenditure. 
 
"We believe that recent government action to accelerate the pace of medium term reforms (addressing issues related to land, labour and taxation) will help sustain the recovery in capex..." the report, authored by Chetan Ahya, Upasana Chachra and Nupur Gupta, noted. 
 It sees the economy growing at 6.5 per cent in FY16 as per the old GDP series, by which measure growth in FY14 was 4.9 per cent. Under the new GDP methodology <keyword id="6356076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="indian-economy">Indian economy</keyword> expanded by a perkier 7.3 per cent in FY15 and is expected to accelerate to near 8 per cent in the current year. 
 
 
 
HSBC said that installing projects would provide momentum for some time in the absence of new factories and mines. 
 
 
 
"True, new projects are not showing any increase, but they may not really be the right indicator to track turning points. Right now, resolving a substantial number of stuck projects could in itself trigger notable investment spending," said Pranjul Bhandari, chief India economist, urging government to get state-run companies to step up investments. 
 
Much of the improvement is visible in the roads and railways sector where higher spending and policy initiative has resulted in investment picking up. 
 
In the April-May period, the government has managed to spend 14.8 per cent of its budgeted spending for the year. Within that, 13 per cent of plan funds for the entire year have been spent in the first two months, a fast start to the year. 
 
Many economists caution that investment activity remains weak. "While macro numbers, right from inflation to current account look under control, the domestic private investment remains weak. 
 
The credit growth does not show that manufacturing pickup is on way. It will take a while to gather momentum. As far as project implementation numbers go, they are coming from a very low base. Government's planned capital expenditure slowed down in May versus April," said Soumya Kanti Ghosh, chief economic advisor, SBI.
