<keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> is rolling out new updates to cut low-quality and <keyword id="14757211" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="unoriginal-content" source="Orion">unoriginal content</keyword> in <keyword id="47576" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="search" source="Orion">Search</keyword> results, making it easier for people to find helpful content.<br /><br />A search ranking update called the "Helpful Content Update" will start rolling out globally to English language users on August 22.<br /><br />"We know people don't find content helpful if it seems like it was designed to attract clicks rather than inform readers. Google to reduce 'low-quality, unoriginal' content in Search results

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Christina Pensa is an unmarried real estate professional in New York City.</li><li>Questions about her choice not to get married come up often in the workplace and her social life.</li></ul><p>Heading into my third round of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/red-flags-interviewing-hiring-process-job-worse-hr-vp-2024-3">interviews for a high-level position </a>at a commercial real estate firm in 2019, I was excited and meticulously prepared. I had analyzed market trends for weeks, brushed up on recent trades, and reviewed industry affairs.</p><p>I wasn't prepared, however, for the covert line of questioning into my personal life.</p><p>Glancing at the top of my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-writing-resume-bad-results-2023-5">résumé</a>, my interviewer made note of the Manhattan neighborhood I lived in.</p><p>"Nice area, my wife and I just had dinner there last night. Do you live alone?" he asked me.</p><p>Suddenly my mind was racing: How do I answer this? I'm already feeling juvenile compared to the family photos, #1 Dad mug, and framed accomplishments displayed around his office.</p><p>If I say I live alone, I'll sound behind in life, or worse, bankrolled by my parents. Should I admit I can only afford it because I also work a night job waitressing and occasionally rent out my second room? If I say <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-no-kids-woman-viral-received-abuse-online-interview-2023-9">I live alone</a>, do I seem like a lonely spinster or an unstable party type? I did have a serious boyfriend at the time who stayed over most nights. Should I stretch the truth and say I have a steady live-in partner to give assurance that I have my life together?</p><p>My mind raced until I caved and said, "Yes, I'm fortunate I got a great deal on an apartment, but my partner and I will be consolidating housing in the near future."</p><p>Why I felt the need to offer disclaimers in my answer may have had more to do with societal conditioning than my own personal neurosis, but nonetheless, now I was berating myself for opening a new can of worms. Now I would run the risk of being considered a soon-to-be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fired-pregnant-maternity-leave-employment-lawyer-advice-workplace-discrimination-2024-2">maternity leave liability</a>. There was really no winning here.</p><p>I was 36 at the time, and felt that women of a certain age are either perceived as severely independent and abrasive or high-risk for personal leave absence.</p><h2>Women get asked loaded questions</h2><p>I recently turned 40 and have called New York City home for the better part of my adult life. After graduating from college, I spent a few years working as a chef and took on various roles in the hospitality industry before transitioning into a full-time career as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lisa-simonsen-luxury-real-estate-agent-schedule-2022-12">luxury real estate broker</a>.</p><p>These days, I manage several large-scale projects and find myself facing a slew of loaded questions regarding my marital status. I'm not alone in this. My fellow <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/women-who-love-being-single-2018-9">single girlfriends</a> agree that questions we receive are out of a playbook, and depending on our answers, we are often met with conciliatory patrimony or harsh criticism.</p><p>Being single can be a mixture of freedom and frustration all at the same time. A survey of 1,064 singles in the US conducted by the <a target="_blank" href="https://thrivingcenterofpsych.com/blog/dating-in-2023-here-is-where-most-singles-are-living-in-the-us/">Thriving Center for Psychology</a> in 2022 found 69% of those surveyed were content with their singleness and 91% said they were enjoying their independence.</p><div type="image" title="Woman with dog on bridge near water in Brooklyn" height="884" width="1179" msid="108600041" hostid="261"></div><p>Recently, I received an unoriginal yet perplexing question via Instagram. A man who had tried to ask me out several times over the years resurfaced after recently divorcing. The message read: "Hi Christina, I have always had such a thing for you, and I hold you in high regard. I am recently separated and would love to take you out. One thing I just can't seem to understand is, how on earth are you still single??"</p><p>How did he expect this to be perceived? Is this a compliment, a question, a judgment, or all of the above?</p><h2>I decided to make things clear on social media</h2><p>It was the third message of this nature I'd received, and I decided to take to the internet with a public reel rather than respond to his poorly received DM. It was not directed at this particular individual, but rather, all men and individuals who invade women's space with these questions and inferences.</p><p>I received applause from various friends — mostly female but a couple of my more supportive and progressive guy friends as well. Then I received quite a defensive and angry response from the man who had messaged me several times questioning my single status.</p><p>The underlying message is that women are damsels, pretty flowers just waiting to be plucked. Those that are seemingly single, are the unchosen ones, and there must be some derogatory explanation as to why they are still on the market.</p><div type="image" title="Woman on an ice hike in Patagonia" height="1199" width="1599" msid="108600043" hostid="261"></div><p>It doesn't seem to occur to many that there are women who are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-youre-better-off-being-single-according-to-science-2019-2">thrilled to be single</a> and happily choose to stay so. The happier the woman, the more we prefer our own company rather than compromise our happiness to meet a status quo.</p><p>Some of us who choose not to get married, or to not marry until a later age, do so because we hold life to a certain standard and are not willing to conform due to pressure.</p><p>I would love to see the narrative change in the coming years. If a woman says, "No, I'm not married." Instead of a sympathetic look, how refreshing would it be to hear, "That's awesome," followed by a new question about our interests?</p><p>Let's celebrate the other accomplishments in a woman's life — because we have many. And one of those is choosing to prioritize ourselves every single day.</p><p>I also chose to turn down the job offer.</p>

I'm 40, unmarried, and not looking for anyone's sympathy

Sensex climbs 113 points in early trade, amid mixed global trends

Since then, an American <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/04/another-round-remake-leonardo-dicaprio-oscar-winner-best-international-film-appian-way-makeready-endeavor-content-thomas-vinterberg-1234744200/">remake with Leonardo DiCaprio has been touted.</a></p><p>But in an interview with <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2021/05/mads-mikkelsen-bad-guy-another-round-1234635183/">Indie Wire</a>, Mikkelsen said: "I'm glad not to be part of it."</p><p>"This is what we did. Unlike theater, where you can do it one year and do it again a couple years later, the little moments we do in films are happening right here and now - something interesting your fellow actor brings on set that day," Mikkelsen explained.</p><p>"I would probably want to change these scenes again. It can never happen. It's a tricky thing to replay the same character. It's better off in someone else's hands."</p><div type="image" title="leonardo dicaprio 2020 oscars" height="1304" width="1738" msid="82631804" hostid="261"></div><p>"Another Round" follows four high school teachers who test out a theory that maintaining a consistent level of being drunk improves one's life.</p><p>While it is unconfirmed as of yet whether DiCaprio will star in the remake himself, his production company Appian Way is one of three behind the project. The others are Endeavor Content and Makeready.</p><p>The proposed movie has been criticized by many, with some calling it an unoriginal idea that "nobody wants."</p><p>But director <a href="https://www.insider.com/thomas-vinterberg-defends-another-round-leonardo-dicaprio-remake-oscars-2021-4">Thomas Vinterberg defended the remake</a>, saying that his work has always been subject to a lot of "various interpretations" throughout his career.</p><p>"It's an interesting artistic thing to see something grow into different versions," Vinterberg said, citing the involvement of DiCaprio as one of the reasons he is "full of hope and curiosity about what they're up to."</p><p>Vinterberg agreed with Mikkelsen that the movie should star a different actor, however.</p><p>"Asking the same actor to do a different interpretation could be a little bit confusing. But I won't be the main creative force in this. That would have to be up to the people who end up doing it," Vinterberg said.</p><p>Even if Mikkelsen were inclined to get involved in the remake, he may not have time - his slate is packed with starring roles in several major franchises.</p><p>Mikkelsen will be starring in the third "Fantastic Beasts" movies and their sequels after <a href="https://www.insider.com/johnny-depp-replaced-by-mads-mikkelsen-fantastic-beasts-3-2020-11">taking over the role of Gellert Grindelwald from Johnny Depp</a>. Mads Mikkelsen said 'he's glad not to be a part of' Leonardo DiCaprio's 'Another Round' remake

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>If you're excited to use Apple's new Night Shift feature for the iPhone, which automatically shifts the display's color to warmer hues as the sun sets, don't assume that it's a cure-all - especially if you're still reading in bed.<p>You've probably heard that the crisp blue light emitted by everything from TVs to tablets to smartphones is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/smartphone-is-destroying-your-sleep-2014-5">wreaking havoc on our health</a>.</p><p>As far as the range of <a href="http://science-edu.larc.nasa.gov/EDDOCS/Wavelengths_for_Colors.html">visible light</a> goes, blue light - which is also given off by the sun - is near the brightest. (If our phones and tablets weren't also graced with this blue light, we'd never be able to see our screens on a sunny day.)</p><p>But blue light also tamps down on the production of <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/flux-review-2015-10">melatonin</a>, a key hormone our brains use to tell our bodies to start preparing for sleep. That's something you don't want to be doing at night, especially right when you're heading to bed.</p><p>Enter Apple's ingenious (<a href="http://www.techinsider.io/flux-review-2015-10">albeit unoriginal</a>) solution to the problem: a feature on iPhones that transitions the screen's <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/how-to-use-iphone-night-shift-mode-2016-1">hue from blue to red</a> as the sun sets.</p><p>When we talked Keck School of Medicine professor of clinical medicine and fellow of the <a href="http://www.aasmnet.org/">American Academy of Sleep Medicine</a>, <a href="http://www.doctorrajd.com/">Raj Dasgupta</a>, about whether Night Shift could solve our sleep woes, his answer caught us off-guard.</p><p>"If you can't sleep, good sleep hygiene suggests that you get up, get out of bed, and do something else, something relaxing, like going and reading a book. But nowadays people aren't doing that, they're pulling out their phones and scrolling," Dasgupta told Business Insider.</p><p>There are two major problems with this, both of which run contrary to a broader set of healthy behaviors that Dasgupta encourages in people with sleeping problems known as sleep hygeine.</p><h2><strong>1. It might encourage more night-time cellphone use, which could make things worse.</strong></h2><p>Stimulus control, which the <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/insomnia/in-depth/insomnia-treatment/art-20046677">Mayo Clinic includes on its list</a> of components of good sleep hygeine, refers to the practice of getting rid of factors that condition the mind to resist sleep. This includes setting rules like using the bed only for sleep and leaving the bedroom if you stay awake for longer than 20 minutes.</p><p>For people who already have sleep problems, apps and features that encourage <em>more</em> night-time cellphone use could end up making the problem worse.</p><p>"There are lots of apps that are great that are designed to help you sleep," says Dasgupta, "but it's almost a double-edged sword because my patients are using their phone in bed to use these apps."</p><h2><strong>2. The content most of us scroll through on our phones - as opposed to what we'd read in a book - is more likely to be the kind that interferes with sleep. </strong></h2><p>Another component of good sleep hygeine is preparing for sleep by decreasing our exposure to stimulating content, like TV, social media, and the news, as we get closer to bedtime. Some experts suggest avoiding devices for <a href="http://www.aasmnet.org/jcsm/ViewAbstract.aspx?pid=29249">an hour</a> before bed.</p><p>"When you're going to bed, you want to do things that are relaxing, like reading a book. You want to gradually transition into sleep; you don't want your mind to be stimulated," Dasgupta says.</p><p>I'm not sure about you, but I find pretty much everything on my phone stimulating. First there are the pop-up news notifications. Then there are the group texts (not to mention the Slacks and Tweets). And, when I just can't look away, there's my Facebook newsfeed.</p><p>"At bedtime, you want to be at peace," says Dasgupta. We asked a sleep scientist if the iPhone's new Night Shift feature will actually help you sleep, and his answer surprised us

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Google recently introduced the Nexus Player, a TV set-top device designed to rival Apple TV and Amazon's Fire TV. </p>
<p>It costs the same as those two competing products - $99 - and it offers similar features: It has rows of different applications to choose from, a dedicated gaming controller like the Fire TV so you can play Google Play games on your big screen, and the ability to stream or "cast" Google applications like Chrome and YouTube from one's computer or mobile device to the TV.</p>
<p>Once you've signed in with a Google account, any movies, music, or games you've previously purchased through Google Play will show up on the Nexus Player. </p>

<p>I was happy to see all my music already waiting <span>on the device </span>for me - and using it was a pleasure. Songs and media loaded quickly (super-fast 802.11 ac Wi-Fi certainly helps) and it all looked beautiful: Google applied its "Material Design" look from Android 5.0 Lollipop to all the Google-built applications on the Nexus Player.</p>
<p>One of my favorite aspects of the Nexus Player was casting. It was super easy to cast content from my iPhone and MacBook to the TV screen, using a "cast" button that instantly pops up on any application that can cast to the Nexus Player. There was no setup involved; it all just worked.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, many of the Nexus Player's positive attributes end there.</p>
<p>Google's top row of curated items, while presented beautifully, was a bit buggy and generally useless. At one point, it promoted a video from YouTube user Pewdiepie, but when I clicked on it, I got a completely different video, which was about farmland, I believe. When I returned back to the home screen, that farm-related video was nowhere to be found, but clicking on the Pewdiepie video kept bringing me back to my unwanted content.</p>
<p>Third-party applications were also buggy. While trying to sign in with Netflix, the interface froze and wouldn't let me leave, and I needed to shut off the device after about 10 minutes of this:</p>

<p class="embed-spacer"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We reached out to Google about these bugs, and the company was very accommodating and willing to send us another demo unit. If this is a software issue, however, these bugs will be ironed out in time.</span></p>
<p class="embed-spacer"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I also tried gaming on this device: You can use Google's remote control, or you can use a dedicated Nexus Player controller built by Asus. The controller is identical in look and feel to an Xbox 360 controller, so it's comfortable to use, albeit totally unoriginal.</span></p>

<p>I downloaded and booted up Badland, one of the more beautiful mobile games for iOS and Android. It looked and played great on the big screen, but my experience was totally marred by Google's obnoxious preferences, which will share everything you do on the game - how many times you play it, your high scores, etc. - to Google+ by default.</p>
<p>If I want to share<em> anything</em> with <em>any</em> social network, I'd like the ability to share that myself. I don't need a TV set-top sharing content by default, on my behalf, all the time. And more importantly, I shouldn't need to rifle through settings for each individual game I download to turn off these "public" settings.</p>

<p>The Nexus Player also comes with a voice search feature that works well - when it actually works. Unfortunately, the Nexus Player froze on me half the time I used this feature, and I was unable to navigate elsewhere until the interface managed to unfreeze - this took about 5 minutes on each occasion. Hopefully that's just a software bug limited to the demo products, and not the finished Nexus Player.</p>
<p>When it's not malfunctioning, voice search can be relatively useful. You hold the microphone button on the Nexus Player's remote control, search for your content, and the Nexus Player will tell you where it's available. But like the Amazon Fire TV, the Nexus Player can't search the libraries of Netflix or the other applications you download, so voice search queries and results are limited to what can be found on the Google Play store.</p>

<p>All in all, the Nexus Player offers a visually pleasing experience thanks to the Material Design look and the fluid interface. But for a Google product, it's extremely unimaginative. Seriously, it couldn't do hardware or software <em>any differently </em>than Apple or Amazon? After all these years, we're still looking at a black, flat square or circle with a small, simple remote.</p>
<p>Here's the thing: Who needs another remote control in their living room? If Google were smart, it'd ditch the physical remote and make the Nexus Player an entirely digital experience. People always have their phones on them, and it'd be extremely easy to summon an application instead of trying to find another slim remote control between your couch cushions. The remote and player are designed well, but when you compare them to other TV set-tops, it lacks "googleyness," or that special spark that makes it a unique product to Google.</p>
<p>At the interface level, the various bugs were annoying, but I would return the Nexus Player solely based off the default sharing permissions attached to games and applications alone. Yes, it bothers me that much. Google has a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-changes-its-privacy-policy-another-reminder-to-use-offshore-email-2012-2">long history of</a> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-ftc-fine-2012-8">privacy-related</a> <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/05/wifi-data-collection-update.html">issues</a>, and yet, there are countless default settings, and you don't know what they are unless you visit each setting individually - Google tries to hide your settings so you can't see them all at a distance. Therefore, in this respect, I find Google's approach to app permissions on the Nexus Player to be particularly loathsome. </p>
<p>Compared to other TV set-top boxes, the Nexus Player is basically equivalent to the Fire TV, in terms of features, and especially the standalone gaming aspect. Simply switch out Amazon's various platforms and stores with Google's, and you've got the Nexus Player. But unless you plan on doing a lot of mobile gaming on your TV, your $99 would be much better spent on an Apple TV or Roku, which are simpler, easier to use, and more stable than rival services. (And they also have HBO GO, which neither Google nor Amazon have yet.) Otherwise, save yourself $60 and buy a <a href="http://www.google.com/chrome/devices/chromecast/#cc-video">Chromecast</a>.</p>

<ul><li><keyword id="758541" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Prime">Amazon Prime</keyword>’s latest <keyword id="878518" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Social-Media-Campaign">social media campaign</keyword> ‘Missing Me’ reminded us of <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>’s ‘WherestheF’ campaign from September 2020. </li><li>This made us wonder if <keyword id="6354632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-media">social media</keyword> has normalised stealing original ideas in the name of ‘trends.’ </li><li>We reached out to experts to understand what are the perils of working on such similar ideas in today’s world. </li></ul>In the social media world, brands often use a creative template that is conceptualised by one agency and tweak it a little to jump on the bandwagon. Brands don't just take ‘inspiration’, they use almost the same template and put their logo on it without seeking consent from the creator. We have normalised replicating one brand's idea for another by calling it a 'trend.' Nobody has a ‘unique voice’ anymore -- everything today is a copy of a copy of a copy. (For example, take Snapchat’s stories, Twitter Stories, Instagram Stories, Facebook Stories)<br /><br />              <div type="javascript" title="Instagram" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div><br />(Most of us are pretty clueless about who started this ‘India vs US’ trend first)<br /><br />At the end of the day, advertising is a business of ideas and without ideas, no agency would exist. After the advent of social media, however, agencies have violated their own code of conduct about idea duplication that they have been following for years now. It has become convenient for brands to adopt original ideas and formats on social media, in the name of ‘trends’, to grab their consumer’s attention. <br /><br />While one might argue that a brand only draws inspiration from the original idea to jump on the bandwagon, the same format can help another brand become more popular and even viral -- leaving the brainchild behind the campaign’s idea feel betrayed and boiling in rage. The creative person behind this brilliant idea, in return, can only calm his/her rage by commenting on the post, “Hey, that was my idea” and the industry moves on. Another day comes by, another post is uploaded without credit and another brand goes viral for an unoriginal idea. <br /><br />At the same time, brands also consciously try to put out formats that can be deemed worthy enough to be picked up and go viral.<br /><br />In March 2020, digital agency Schbang had written an open letter to the advertising industry titled ‘It is time to kill that #trendingformat’ after it saw thousands of content creators following their formats and the agency even agreed to have jumped on the bandwagon in the past. <br /><br />It read, “Every day some of us have lost our unique voices to a trend. Not entertaining consumers anymore. Just high-fiving each other on the ‘earned media. Let’s make mediocrity unhappy and hard work great again. Let’s make art that’s tailor-made for brands.”<br /><br />              <div type="javascript" title="Instagram" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div><br />Schbang articulated and reflected upon what we are trying to convey with this story, almost a year ago. It is about how social media has allowed brands and agencies to leech on each other’s ideas and breed mediocrity. <br /><br />This week, Amazon Prime India dropped 'Me' from its logo across social media pages and soon, everyone was talking about it. A few more brands like Dunzo, Pepsi, Parle G and Tinder India picked up on this and removed 'me' from their creatives, which was possibly a collaboration between the platform and these brands. <br /><br />              <div type="javascript" title="Instagram" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[ ]]></cdata></div><br />But wait a minute. Did you also feel a déjà vu? We have heard of this before. Sounds too similar, doesn’t it?<br /><br />We couldn't help but compare Amazon Prime Me (Mobile Edition) campaign with Flipkart and Samsung's '#WhereTheF' campaign from September 2020 and spot the uncanny resemblance. <br /><br />Allow us to refresh your memory. <br /><br />For a few days in September 2020, Flipkart had tweeted without using the alphabet ‘F.’ Some of the words in its tweets were like ‘rom’, ‘itness’, ‘irst’, ‘inds’, and others. A-listers and brands joined in and started looking for Flipkart’s ‘F.’ Users were curious about what’s cooking and Flipkart later announced that it was a marketing ploy for Samsung's phone launch. Both of these campaigns have a similar strategy: make a typo to get noticed on the platform, edit your social media bio, support it with a hashtag and get more brands to tweet about it so that there’s a continuous momentum on social media to earn organic PR. <br /><br />While it wasn’t a trending format, it is a similar idea and template, executed a few months apart with little changes: brand name, colour and timing. Had it been a TVC or a giant billboard, Amazon Prime would probably have been accused of plagiarism. While on social media, it is okay to revise and pass the derivative ideas as their own. <br /><br />So, we reached out to experts to understand the perils of working on similar-looking ideas today and discuss if social media has normalised <keyword id="10590919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="idea-theft">idea theft</keyword>.<br /><br />Here is what they said: <br /><br /><strong>Lloyd Mathias, Angel Investor and Business Strategist:<br /></strong><br />I think this a cool twist in moment marketing, where brands pick on ongoing conversations and insert themselves with casual banter weaving their brand messaging. When brands indulge in casual repartee, it helps them come through as casual and friendly and in a sense endear themselves to their audiences. <br /><br />When Flipkart kicked off the #WheresTheF trend back in September the obvious reference was to the more commonly used WTF so part of GenZ speak. It also played on Flipkart’s logo that used the F! Brands like Samsung and Swiggy were quick to pick on this pitching their own lines dropping the letter F. Amazon taking this on with its own variant for Amazon Pri….with the ME missing now has other brands latching on taking the opportunity to up their social media game. This campaign - on the missing ME - that's creating immense curiosity, is driving both interest and sparking off reactions from other brands, fuelling the conversation. <br /><br />These catchy, smart, low coats conversation builders help boost excitement in social media platforms, helping the brand up it's salience and is a welcome trend in an increasingly digitally savvy society. <br /><strong><br />Harish Bijoor, Brand Guru &amp; Founder, HarishBijoor Consults Inc:<br /></strong><br />Good ideas have a restricted shelf-life. Once a brand has used it, it becomes part of used-lore, and loses its original sting. That is the risk of using ideas used once, time and again by others. Social media is really an anarchy. Ownership of ideas is seldom respected. People lift thoughts and ideas without a qualm. Chasing idea-theft is therefore a very laborious task out here. When a brand does have an original idea, the best way to protect it is to go hammer and tongs on it, and go to town with its exposure. If the exposure is large enough, the one who wants to copy it will think thrice before doing it.<br /><br /><strong>Abhik Santara, Director and CEO ^ a t o m:</strong><br /><br />It is sheer lazy marketing - by clients and agencies. And both are to be blamed equally. If an agency goes with a new idea/innovation, clients are asking to see a reference. How is that possible? It's a new idea. Similarly, agencies are getting too comfortable to present ideas which have topicality built in. It is easier to ensure a certain amount of engagement on popular subjects. But does that create any difference or add to the core of the brand? Null! A good performance campaign should help the brand and a good brand campaign must deliver performance. It's not either or. Agencies which are equipped to understand and deliver this, will drive the future.<br /><br />The battle of communication between rivals is not new in marketing. It has been happening for many decades. But that was when communication was one sided, and markets were fragmented. Today, in the digital era, it is walking into fire. Consumers will pick it up, competitive brands will lash out. And probably the brand which is being copied gets more mileage out of it.<br /><br /><strong>Ashish Khazanchi, Managing Partner, Enormous Brands:</strong><br /><br />I think the online world is all about conversations and fueling those conversations and making sure that you are the guy who's benefiting the most from those conversations. Couple of years back, if I came across a campaign that somebody else has already, we would put an end to ours. But what I see happening is, if I'm the originator of that kind of a thought, and lots of people wanting in on that one, you got a good thing going: you got a campaign you started off, more and more people joining in the conversation. The conversation that you started is actually working in your favor: the world is talking about it. They get some reflected glory, but the main glory, the guy who started off the conversation, that just exactly how the whole hashtagging of it or how you started all those conversations the way it works.<br /><br /><strong>Akshara Vasavda, Creative Lead, Schbang:</strong><br /><br />Amazon’s campaign definitely feels similar right now, but how they take it forward might change everything. But yes, they've chosen a route that now begs scrutiny because of its obvious similarities to campaigns of well known competitor brands. <br /><br />Personally, I don't think following a trend is that big a deal. Almost every single thing we consume today is a copy of a copy. Of course outright plagiarism is wrong, but when it comes to creativity in advertising, it's not just the idea on a conceptual level that makes things happen. So yes, the idea might be similar, but how it's executed, in what context it's executed, the end objective, all of that determines the success of the idea. Even if we copy a Cannes winning idea and slap it on a random brand, it won't work if the rest of the aspects aren't fitting in. If Amazon is intentionally or unintentionally copying Flipkart - a) the consumers are smart enough to see through this and it won't appeal to people as much because the intrigue factor will be lost. b) if the consumers do end up liking it, it automatically means that they did something that stood out and made people like the idea despite it being similar to a competitor brand that is also equally well known in India. Basically, in the end, the consumers decide if the brand can get away with 'copying' or not. It would be a very different conversation for things like films, shows, music, etc. But this is advertising we're talking about. Creativity is simply an added layer in the process of marketing the product - the end goal is to generate buzz, get outreach, get sales, etc. If that happens, all is good. If that doesn't happen, even the most unique idea won't be appreciated. <br /><br />The Internet largely works on meme culture. This culture has now trickled down to digital advertising as well where 'formats' essentially become 'memes'. It's got its pros and cons. If your brand puts out an innovative format, and other brands end up using it as a trend, that's big validation for your own brand. Most brands wouldn't look at it as idea theft. In fact, brands today consciously try to put out formats that can be 'picked up' and go viral. But the flipside is that while some brands are pushing for innovation to be the leader of the trend, some brands are happy following trends instead of creating them. That comes down to the agency culture and the creatives working on these brands. It definitely doesn't feel like a case of idea theft right now. And where there have been cases of lazy plagiarism, like I said earlier, the consumers (and even agencies) are smart enough to call it out. <br /><br /><strong>P.G Aditya, National Creative Director, Dentsu Webchutney:<br /></strong><br />Similarities like these exist across the spectrum, everywhere. There are multiple campaigns over the years that have removed a part of their brand name/logo/core asset as a teaser to launch something (the most popular global example is the I-Hop, the pancake chain, which changed its name to I-Hob on the internet to announce its new range of Burgers).
