Gas prices hit new record high of $4.60 – just in time for Memorial Day weekend getaway

<b>Aurangabad,</b> The rate of <keyword id="6367091" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="petrol">petrol</keyword> with additives has crossed the ₹100 mark for a <keyword id="88122" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Litre">litre</keyword> in <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>'s <keyword id="1246763" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Parbhani-district">Parbhani district</keyword> on Sunday morning, an office bearer of a petrol dealers' association said.<br /><br /><br />After a 28 paise rise on Sunday morning, the per-litre rate of petrol with additives for retail sale crossed Rs 100.<br /><br />Parbhani District Petrol Dealers' Association President Amol Bhedsurkar told PTI, "The rates of petrol with additives in Parbhani has reached to 100.16 rupees for one litre. The <keyword id="30446" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cost">cost</keyword> of unleaded petrol is 97.38 here."<br /><br />The cost of petrol in Parbhani is one of the costliest in Maharashtra. The cost is higher due to longer distance of transportation.<br /><br />Fuel in Parbhani comes from Manmad in the Nashik district, which is at a distance of 340 km.<br /><br />"We need ₹3,000 extra for every tanker if prices go up by 10 paise. Petrol rates with additives cross ₹100 mark in Maharashtra's Parbhani district

New Delhi, Feb 19 () India will switch to the world's cleanest petrol and diesel from April 1 as it leapfrogs straight to Euro-VI emission compliant fuels from Euro-IV grades now - a feat achieved in just three years and not seen in any of the large economies around the globe.<p>India will join the select league of nations using petrol and diesel containing just 10 parts per million of sulphur as it looks to cut vehicular emissions that are said to be one of the reasons for the choking pollution in major cities.</p><p>Sanjiv Singh, Chairman of Indian Oil Corp (IOC) - the firm that controls roughly half of the country's fuel market, said almost all refineries began producing ultra-low sulphur BS-VI (equivalent to Euro-VI grade) petrol and diesel by the end of 2019 and oil companies have now undertaken the tedious task of replacing every drop of fuel in the country with the new one.</p><p>"We are absolutely on track for supplying BS-VI fuel from April 1. Almost all refineries have begun supplying BS-VI fuel and the same has reached storage depots across the country," he said.</p><p> From storage depots, the fuel has started travelling to petrol pumps and in the next few weeks all of them will only have BS-VI grade petrol and diesel, he said. "We are 100 per cent confident that fuel that will flow from nozzles at all the petrol pumps in the country on April 1 will be BS-VI emission compliant fuel."</p><p> India adopted Euro-III equivalent (or Bharat Stage-III) fuel with a sulphur content of 350 ppm in 2010 and then took seven years to move to BS-IV that had a sulphur content of 50 ppm. From BS-IV to BS-VI it took just three years.</p><p> "It was a conscious decision to leapfrog to BS-VI as first upgrading to BS-V and then shifting to BS-VI would have prolonged the journey to 4 to 6 years. Besides, oil refineries, as well as automobile manufacturers, would have had to make investments twice - first to producing BS-V grade fuel and engines and then BS-VI ones," he said.</p><p> State-owned oil refineries spent about Rs 35,000 crore to upgrade plants that could produce ultra-low sulphur fuel. This investment is on top of Rs 60,000 crore they spent on refinery upgrades in the previous switchovers.</p><p> BS-VI has a sulphur content of just 10 ppm and emission standards are as good as CNG. </p><p> Originally, Delhi and its adjoining towns were to have BS-VI fuel supplies by April 2019 and the rest of the country was to get same supplies from April 2020.</p><p> But oil marketing companies switched over to supply of BS-VI grade fuels in the national capital territory of Delhi on April 1, 2018.</p><p> The supply of BS-VI fuels was further extended to four contiguous districts of Rajasthan and eight of Uttar Pradesh in the National Capital Region (NCR) on April 1, 2019, together with the city of Agra.</p><p> BS-VI grade fuels were made available in 7 districts of Haryana from October 1, 2019.</p><p> Singh said the new fuel will result in a reduction in NOx in BS-VI compliant vehicles by 25 per cent in petrol cars and by 70 per cent in diesel cars.</p><p> The switchover, he said, is a tedious task as every drop of old, higher-sulphur content fuel has to be flushed out in depots, pipelines and tanks before being replaced by BS-VI.</p><p> "We are confident of disruption-free switchover to BS-VI supplies across the country," he said. "What we will be supplying is the best quality available anywhere in the world. You don't have any better fuel that is supplied in any part of the world. Perhaps our BS-VI fuel will be better than equivalent fuel in some parts of the US and Europe."</p><p> India adopted a fuel upgradation programme in the early 1990s. Low lead gasoline (petrol) was introduced in 1994 in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. On February 1, 2000, unleaded gasoline was mandated nationwide.</p><p> Similarly, BS-2000 (Euro-I equivalent, BS-1) vehicle emission norms were introduced for new vehicles from April 2000. BS-II (Euro-II equivalent) emission norms for new cars were introduced in Delhi from 2000 and extended to the other metro cities in 2001.</p><p> Benzene limits have been reduced progressively from 5 per cent in 2000 to 1 per cent nationwide. Lead content in gasoline was removed in phases and only unleaded gasoline is being produced and sold from February 1, 2000. </p><p> The octane number of gasoline signifies the improved performance of the engine. Loss in octane number due to phasing out of lead was made up by installing new facilities in the refinery and changes in refinery operation. RON (Research Octane Number) of gasoline for BS-2000 spec was increased to 88. Italy has some of the highest fuel prices in Europe.</p></div><p></p></div></div>British holidaymakers planning a European road trip can fill up the car with cheap fuel this summer after a dramatic drop in petrol prices across the continent, according to new data from Post Office Travel Money.</p><p>The Post Office's 10th annual <a href="http://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-money/motoring-on-the-continent" target="_blank">Motoring on the Continent</a> report surveyed the cost of unleaded petrol and diesel in 20 European countries to find the most and least affordable places to drive.</p><p>Drivers in Andorra can find the best value in both unleaded petrol - which costs £0.82 ($1.18) per litre - and diesel, priced at £0.66 ($0.95) per litre.</p><p>Austria has the second-cheapest unleaded petrol, at £0.84 ($1.21), followed by Cyprus, where drivers pay £0.86 ($1.24) per litre. Luxembourg came in fourth place, with fuel costing £0.87 ($1.26) - keeping the cost of a litre in the top four countries under £0.90 ($1.30).</p><p>Luxembourg is also the second-cheapest place to drive if you have a diesel-powered car. Fuel in the tiny nation, which is one of <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/the-richest-countries-in-the-world-2016-3" target="_blank">the world's richest countries</a>, is priced at just £0.72 ($1.04). Austria - where a litre of diesel costs motorists £0.76 ($1.10) - came in third place.</p><p>While British motorists can enjoy cheap prices in most other European countries, the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> is among the least affordable countries to drive, with the second-most expensive diesel priced at £1.08 ($1.56) per litre. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A Greek state-owned TV station stunned viewers by airing advice on how to siphon gasoline.</li><li>On the program, a car expert showed viewers how to pierce a <keyword id="12233232" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fuel" source="Orion">fuel</keyword> tank from under a vehicle.</li></ul><p>A Greek state-owned TV station has been ridiculed for airing a tutorial on how to siphon gasoline from a car and puncture a fuel tank to drain its contents, as the country grapples with a <keyword id="14276806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fuel-crisis" source="Orion">fuel crisis</keyword>.</p><p>In the segment aired on Wednesday morning by the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, a car expert explained how to insert a tube into a vehicle's fuel tank and suck the gasoline within into a container.</p><p>The station's reporter, Costas Stamou, who was with the car expert, said the task is "not something terribly complicated," according to a translation by <a href="https://www.barrons.com/news/greek-state-tv-mocked-for-gasoline-theft-tips-01656001809">Agence France-Presse.</a></p><p>"You don't even need a special tube, even a hose for balconies will do," Stamou said, per AFP.</p><p>The car expert is also seen underneath an elevated car, showing Stamou and viewers how to pierce a fuel tank from below to obtain its contents.</p><p>The TV segment has since been mocked online. This is called the WCOL (World Cost of Living) Index.</p><p><span>The cost of living in Asia's rapidly expanding cities like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Seoul has surged in recent years, and in the last two rankings Asian cities have dominated. That means EVs make up roughly 2% of sales, and the important context here is that excellent EVs have been available here for 10 years, and just prior to that period there was a serious gas-price spike that sent a gallon of regular unleaded to $4.</p><p>A variety of reasons have been cited for the objective failure of electric vehicles to live up to expectations: range, charging infrastructure, cost. But the real reason that EVs haven't sold better, despite there being lots of dandy EVs to buy, is that gas-powered vehicles have gotten so good that there aren't enough compelling reasons for consumers to make a big switch.</p><p>In and around the auto industry, one often hears gas-burners compared with horses: what the EV is to the internal-combustion engine, the IC engine was to the horse.</p><p>The analogy is terrible. Horses are living beasts that have to be fed, watered, and cared for in an elaborate way, and even if you did everything right, you could travel just about 30 miles a day at 10 miles per hour. You are exposed to the elements the whole time. The horse has mood swings. And you're not going to be listening to Spotify in the saddle.</p><p>Even a cheap modern car can hit 100 mph without much effort, cruise at 65 mph while serving up a bounty of media to occupants and maintaining a quiet environment whose temperature can be fixed at 70 degrees. Car seats are much, much more comfy than saddles. And assuming you're motoring in developed regions, you can go basically forever, racking up 400 miles between refueling stops that consume 10 minutes, maybe a few more if you buy a couple of cans of Red Bull and some beef jerky.</p><p>I like to say that when the automobile was invented, humans moved to a different planet. Our sense of time and space was completely changed.</p><p>EVs are really just that radical innovation powered by a different drivetrain: stored electrons versus cracked hydrocarbons, magnets in motors against pistons in engine blocks. Probably better on balance, but not better enough to put the old system out to pasture.</p><h2>The EV buyers don't actually exist in major numbers</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>The core problem since around 2010, when the latest generation of EVs started to appear (the Nissan Leaf, the Tesla Model S), is that all the people who were supposed to buy EVs didn't go out and buy them. The EV narrative has been relentless for almost the entire time I've been covering the car business, but ten years after the hoopla started, a crummy 2% of sales was all EVs were able to capture.</p><p>What a catastrophe! Well, maybe not. That 2% actually looks kind of stable, and for automakers playing the regulatory compliance game, it's not too expensive to serve that meager buyership. A low plateau, to be sure, but a decent place to start from when the next major wave of innovation arrives, probably in the form of batteries that are much smaller, more efficient, energy dense, and faster to recharge.</p><p>So what about Tesla?</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>Tesla is astonishing, and not just because it's the first successful new auto brand to come along in the US in decades. As I've already explained, pre-Tesla demand for EVs was pathetic. Tesla altered that situation by <em>creating</em> demand. This is important because although Tesla likes to argue that it's taking buyers away from traditional auto brands, it really isn't. Instead, Tesla is capturing buyers who always wanted a premium electric car but were <em>making do</em> with a gas-powered car.</p><p>This indicates that there isn't much of an EV market, without substantial government support (China could be the model here, if it forces its market to accept EVs). There <em>is</em> a Tesla market. And the billion-dollar question there is, "Can Tesla grow this market?"</p><p>Perhaps. I'm not that optimistic. For my money, Tesla's best strategy for prosperity would be to become a premium automaker, selling electric BMWs. That could lead to healthy annual profits, delighted customers, and wouldn't require massive new investment in factories.</p><p>Tesla CEO Elon Musk probably hates this idea, despite its obviousness. All along he's been a world-changer, committed to getting humanity off fossil fuels; for that, Tesla needs to sell millions of EVs, and to induce other automakers to follow its lead.</p><h2>Quit wasting time on fully electric vehicles as a solution for global warming</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>I've spent months thinking about Musk's master plan while simultaneously digesting the Democrats' Green New Deal, accepting that we have only about a decade to massively move the needle on global warming out of the red zone.</p><p>The conclusion I've come to is that although Tesla has done a magnificent thing by creating real demand for EVs where there was none, it's a drop in the climate-change bucket. Ten years, for the car business, is two product cycles. There are over a billion gas-burning vehicles in the world today. We can't afford to waste time on electric cars.</p><p>Instead, we need to substantially improve the efficiency of our total energy use. As <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/green-new-deal-is-right-and-we-dont-have-to-wait-for-ambitious-goals-2019-2">I've already pointed out</a>, we could get started on this ... today. I mean, like literally today. At 9:59 a.m. EDT, on June 20, 2019, as I type this sentence.</p><p>So why aren't we? I call this the Boring Now Problem. Hybridizing the next two cycles of vehicle engines - engineering them to run on gas and electricity - has a been-there-done-that quality. It's also already been invested in; the Toyota Prius has been around for 20 years. Nobody on Sand Hill Road is going to get excited about that.</p><p>It also has the collateral damage of turning Tesla into a perfectly nice niche automaker whose destiny is to see its stock trade like all other car companies: in a dreary, routinely profitable (much of the time), but slow-growing manner.</p><p>And it kills the Tesla demand debate. Tesla sells half-a-million vehicles per year. End of story. Stable, sustainable demand, created where there was none before.</p><p>From where I sit, that's wonderful news. For Tesla bulls and extreme fans, it's a disaster. I hate to break it to them, but a very solid and successful Tesla could mitigate global warming barely at all. My advice for them is to accept that Tesla demand is finite and, you know, <em>move on.</em> They need to throw their support behind climate strategies that could actually work.</p><p>Every second they spend arguing about whether Tesla can sell just a few hundred thousand cars a year or a million is another nail in the species' coffin, one we've been building since we started burning dead dinosaurs.</p><p class="tagline">Get the latest Tesla stock price<a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/TSLA-Quote"> <strong>here.</strong></a></p>

<p>Gas hasn't been this cheap since 2010 in the U.S.</p>
<p>And it was this OnCue Express station in Oklahoma City that led us pas that critical mark on Wednesday, according to GasBuddy.com, a site that tracks gas prices nationwide. Other stations in the region have now followed suit. One station, as of Thursday, is selling a gallon of regular unleaded for $1.98.</p>
<p>(For the record, the Google Street view photo above was taken back when gas was around $2.50 a gallon in Oklahoma City.)</p>
<p>As a kid growing in the post-1970s gas-crisis era of relatively inexpensive petrol, I can remember people saying that Americans would never - <em>never - </em>pay $2 a gallon for gas. </p>
<p>Well, we zoomed past $2 just about everywhere a long, long time ago. But the crashing price of oil globally is translating into major savings at the pump.</p>
<p>In the past decade, the lowest price I can remember paying for gas was about $1.25 a gallon - and at the time, given that I was living in Los Angeles (gas is always more expensive in California, for tax and regulatory reasons), that wasn't all that cheap compared to other places in the U.S.</p>
<p>Cheap gas is something that makes the average American feel rich in a hurry - even they aren't rich. The savings at the pump are turned into spending on other stuff, which is good for the overall economy. </p>
<p>When I was gassing up a few years ago, it was costing me upwards of $60 per tank to keep rolling (in my admittedly not-very-fuel efficient 1998 Saab 900S). The recent gas price drop wouldn't have me shelling out $2 per gallon versus than $3.50-4.00, but it would save me more about $25 every time I refueled. </p>
<p>$100 a month, $1,200 per year? That's probably not money that I would save - it's money that I would spend, at someplace other than the gas station.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see how much stimulus to the rest of the economy cheaper gas will deliver. For some, it will mean more eating out. For others, a couple of flatscreen TVs. If you're more forward-looking, you might grab some shares of Apple stock.</p>
<p>On thing is for sure: Carmakers are going to be able to sell a lot more big trucks and SUVs to people who, back when gas was pricier, wouldn't have gone for such vehicles.</p>
