The University of Delhi has released a list of 6,100 <keyword id="21977691" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vacant-seats" source="keywords">vacant seats</keyword> for the second round of undergraduate <keyword id="19962926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="admissions" source="keywords">admissions</keyword>, following the conclusion of the first round. Vacant seats have been displayed on the dashboards of the candidates. With 91.98 per cent (65,843) of seats already filled, candidates have been provided the opportunity to re-order their (college and course) preferences from August 22 to 23. The university aims to begin the <keyword id="20248930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="academic-session" source="keywords">academic session</keyword> on August 29. As many as 65,843 candidates have confirmed their admission to undergraduate courses at <keyword id="19927119" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="keywords">Delhi University</keyword> in the first round. The total number of <keyword id="22671029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="undergraduate-seats" source="keywords">undergraduate seats</keyword> in <keyword id="21617246" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DU-colleges" source="keywords">DU colleges</keyword> is around 71,600. Early this month, the university began the allocation acceptance process, offering 97,387 seats in the first round. To ensure optimal seat occupancy, the administration decided to make extra allocations, targeting an academic session starting on August 29. The university is conducting admissions for 71,600 seats (excluding supernumerary seats) in 69 colleges and departments. There are 1,559 programme-college combinations available for admissions. This year, DU has introduced a feature on the candidates' dashboard, enabling them to view the details of <keyword id="22889419" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cutoffs-and-ranks" source="keywords">cutoffs and ranks</keyword> determining seat allocation based on category and quota. Earlier in the month, the University of Delhi (DU) climbed five spots to secure the 6th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (<keyword id="20051367" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirf" source="keywords">NIRF</keyword>) 2024. DU Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh attributed this achievement to the collective efforts of the university's faculty, students, and staff. In the university category at the national level, DU had previously moved up two spots to reach the 11th position last year. This year, the university continued its upward trajectory, also climbing seven places in the overall ranking to secure the 15th spot.

<keyword id="9318857" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-delhi-university">The Delhi University</keyword> on Monday began its first fully <keyword id="6494783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-admission-process">online admission process</keyword> for <keyword id="6364883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="undergraduate-courses">undergraduate courses</keyword> in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, an official said. This year, the admission process is completely being held online and the university has advised students not to visit colleges in person. The university had announced its first cut-off list on Saturday with Lady Shri Ram College pegging the cut-offs for three honours courses at 100 per cent. Shobha Bagai, dean (admissions), said the admission process started at 10 am. She said there are admission branch officials, grievance redressal officials and nodal officers for each college to assist students in the admission process. The official said the guidelines to complete the admission process and calculate the best of four marks have been uploaded on the website and there is an online calculator to help students to calculate whether their best of four marks meet the cut-off criteria of the respective college. The 100 per cent cut-off for undergraduate admissions in Delhi University comes after a gap of five years. The central university's cut-off had last touched the 100 per cent mark in 2015. <keyword id="903643" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lady-Shri-Ram-College-for-Women">Lady Shri Ram College For Women</keyword> has pegged 100 per cent score for three courses for general category aspirants -- BA (Hons) Economics, BA (Hons) Political Science and BA (Hons) Psychology. Delhi University begins its first fully online admission process

<ul><li>The Delhi High Court on Wednesday observed that <keyword id="6411073" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="final-year-students">final year students</keyword> of the Delhi University "are not thoroughly prepared" to participate in the online open book examination (OBE) proposed by the varsity.</li><li>The data revealed that as against 1,83,376 students who had registered to participate in the OBE in the first phase, 1,86,814 students had registered themselves in the second phase.</li></ul> The Delhi High Court on Wednesday observed that final year students of the Delhi University "are not thoroughly prepared" to participate in the online open book examination (OBE) proposed by the varsity. "This is a clear indication that the final year students are not thoroughly prepared to participate in the online OBE that <keyword id="6562291" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-University-of-Delhi">the University of Delhi</keyword> has proposed to conduct," a division bench of Justices <keyword id="602661" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hima-Kohli">Hima Kohli</keyword> and Subramonium Prasad observed after comparing the data relating to the first and second phase of mock tests that were conducted by the varsity. The data revealed that as against 1,83,376 students who had registered to participate in the OBE in the first phase, 1,86,814 students had registered themselves in the second phase. However, the total number of the students who had logged in during the first phase were 93,185 whereas only 75,593 had logged in the second phase. The total number of papers attempted by the students in the first phase were 60,181 whereas, in the second phase, the total number of papers attempted were 51,176. The data also revealed that the total number of papers submitted in the first phase were 33,162 whereas, in the second phase, the total number of papers submitted were 23,693. After seeing the data, the bench said: "Even for the PWD (person with disability) category students and VH (visually handicapped) students, the data of the second phase of the mock test is no better than that of the first phase, if not worse." The observations were made while the bench was hearing a plea filed by Prateek Sharma, a physically disabled student, highlighting the difficulties that will be faced by disabled students in taking the online exam. The court also granted 10 days time to the varsity to file an affidavit clarifying its position along with the exact date by which the results of the final year students who propose to sit in the online open book examination will be declared. "It shall also be stated as to how many students had actually logged in to participate in the online OBE and the assessment of the number of students who will take the examination physically at a later date, to be indicated by the University," the bench said while slating the matter for further hearing on August 17. Meanwhile, a separate bench of Justice Prathiba M. Singh reserved orders on a batch of pleas challenging the DU's decision to conduct online OBE for final year students. During the hearing, the DU submitted that the OBE were the best option to check the student's knowledge in keeping with the UGC's guidelines while adhering to the restrictions thrown by the global pandemic. "The idea behind OBE was to prevent students from assembling in one hall as it would be difficult to maintain social distancing during the pandemic situation. There were detailed deliberations," senior advocate <keyword id="2985428" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Dutta">Sachin Dutta</keyword>, representing the DU, said. He further told the court that a student does not need very high technology to sit for online OBE as having an email will be sufficient and that connectivity issues will be far more in other modes. While the hearing was underway, with a lot of students too present, music suddenly started playing in the background, following which Justice Singh said: "I don't know what they are celebrating." Initially, the varsity had announced that the online OBE would commence from July 1, which was later postponed by the varsity to July 10 and again, the institution has now postponed the same till August 15, without giving a specific date as to when it would take place. Delhi University students 'not thoroughly prepared' for open book exams: HC

When the Honourable <keyword id="15204227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shri-Hardeep-S-Puri" source="Orion">Shri Hardeep S. Puri</keyword> wrote to me about his plans to publish an anthology to celebrate the centenary of <keyword id="6360099" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="Orion">Delhi University</keyword> and invited me as a celebrated alumnus to write a few words on this magnificent occasion, I wrote back and told him that I was the wrong person to be asked to do this. I did not believe that I fell into the category of 'eminent personalities' he had given reference to, as my years at the university (1958-61) were an academic embarrassment to me. If I were to write something, it would all be rather frivolous and not in keeping with the grace and intent of the anthology, I told him. But he persisted, and I relented. The DU (North Campus) where I sought admission and studied was, perhaps, patterned along the lines of the Cambridge and Oxford universities in the United Kingdom (UK), where several colleges stood side by side at one prominent location, many sharing common boundaries - not just of the physical built environment but also of a deeper educative ethos of imparting the requisite attitudes, values and knowledge to build generations of leaders. This is shared situatedness imbued immense camaraderie among the students. We would stroll into each other's colleges, mix with fellow students, relax at each other's canteens, travel in the same university bus to our home locations, become bitter rivals at intercollegiate competitions, and immediately forget all that animosity to join our voices in cheering for the university when it played against another. This was 1958, and I was at Kirori Mal College pursuing the BSc General course, from which I just about graduated in my final year. Academically, it was the wrong decision to take up Science, but the years spent there were an education in many other spheres, which has proved to be invaluable in my life. Looking back at the influence of my education on my career, I realize that it is the amalgamation of diverse disciplines that inspires every form of creative activity. For instance, where would writers be without a printing press, stage thespians without a proscenium and lights, painters without pigments and canvas, and, in my case, film actors without a camera? Education engenders myriad symbiotic opportunities in the spheres of technology and humanities. Chances are very high that I would not have been in cinema or in any other creative aspect of life without a grounding in education-education which is in consonance with the belief that 'what sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul'. Before leaving the hallowed grounds of university, we sculpt our identity; we strengthen and fortify our convictions in a manner that we do not fall into a trap-the trap of being swayed by the prejudices of caste and creed, and race and religion. During my days at the university, classes were held at the main university building, while the subsidiaries and practicals were conducted at the various individual colleges. It goes without saying that there is a palpable nostalgia as I think back on the hours spent at the Coffee House, or at the bus stop outside Miranda House (yes, always outside Miranda House), or on the sports field that would host intercollegiate and inter-university cricket matches, and, of course, in the classroom where regular attendance paid its dividends when it came to term-end examinations. If I may be permitted to stroll down memory lane a little more, it was at DU that I received my first serious encouragement as an actor. The tall and imposing Mr Frank Thakurdas of the dramatics club paid me my first compliment when I performed in a stage production of Maxwell Anderson's "Winterset". He recommended me to the USIS drama company to play the part of Abraham Lincoln, and chose me for the part of Zeus in Benn Levy's "The Rape of the Belt", staged at Miranda House. Mr Thakurdas remains a part of me. So does Dr Swaroop Singh, a messianic educationist who was the principal of Kirori Mal when I was studying there and later became the university's vice chancellor. Without saying it in so many words, he made us realize that we needn't aspire towards a graduation degree merely because of peer or parental pressure. He reminded us that we should aspire to become graduates because we feel the desire to be complete with the advantage of formal education. For argument's sake, some may opine today that education isn't mandatory any more, with the proliferation of what some may call 'unconventional' jobs and vocations. Some may wonder about the relevance of a degree if one cannot apply it later in one's profession. To my mind, these arguments are superfluous. To be sure, it is a bonus if we can use our education directly in our everyday work-in fact, that would be ideal. However, even if that weren't to be the case, the years spent on campus serve a much more vital purpose-they broaden our knowledge about the world around us, besides aiding personality development. Clearly, initiative in reading at the library, participating in cultural events, and asking more of ourselves and of our educationists, add up to making us aware and concerned citizens. As the proverb goes: Whatever is good to know is difficult to learn. Moreover, no one can argue against the fact that campus life is the formative stage in every individual's life; that is when we 'remove the shackles', as it were. Suddenly, from a regimented life, we are free to make our decisions and heuristically zero in on the subject we want to study or the vocation we want to take up. It is a key period in any young person's life - one of choice. My father taught English and poetry, and he expected me to opt for Arts in college. When I didn't, he was accommodative and understanding. Certainly, the youth of today - in fact, of any day and age - does not want to be preached at. As time goes by, they become more clued-up and more aware of their needs and aspirations. They can see which route to take on the highway of the future. But, believe me, that is not enough. They must also know their speed limits, when to turn and when to apply the brakes. The <keyword id="151282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-delhi" source="Orion">University of Delhi</keyword> was absolutely essential in that regard. Time sped its way along, and then one fine day, almost 50 years after I joined Kirori Mal, I was informed that Delhi University was decorating me with an honorary doctorate. The first sentiment was to express my limitless gratitude. Who would have thought that an ordinary student graduate would someday be accorded such an overwhelming homecoming? My immediate response after that was to ask myself if I deserved an honour of such magnitude. Was I worthy to be honoured by my university, my very own family, which gave me some of the most wonderful years of my life? This was the same institution that inculcated in me the values and principles of life that I cherish deeply and will abide by to my dying day. Among all the accolades that I have been extremely fortunate to have received, it is, perhaps ironically, being bestowed with this honorary doctorate that I regard as one of the highest honours. A lifelong debt is owed to the University of Delhi. I feel it is only fair that I reciprocate the tremendous faith and honour the university has shown me. This anthology, edited by Shri Hardeep S. Puri ji and including some fascinating entries by other more deserving alumni of the DU family, allows me to pay my respects. Indeed, it was a privilege to be at the nation's premier seat of learning-one which has always championed the cause of education since its inception a hundred years ago. My best wishes to the University of Delhi. 'I don't believe I fall into the category of eminent personalities': Amitabh Bachchan

<ul><li>The University of Delhi (DU) has directed the colleges to conduct a forensic examination of the documents supplied by applicants for admission. </li><li>The admission process is expected to begin from 30 May 2019. </li><li>The university will access the class 12th results of applicants from Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) database.</li></ul>The University of Delhi is getting in detective mode. It’s mission: weed out fake documents submitted in student applications. While the students brace up for the admission process in Delhi University Board exam results, the university has <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/delhi-university-contacting-cbse-to-get-marksheets-directly-for-du-admissions-to-reduce-fake-document-submission-html-1480006-2019-03-17">directed the colleges to test the documents</a> submitted by the students to keep its authenticity in check. The authority has asked for the forensic analysis of the documents at the time of admission, which is expected to commence from 30 May 2019. The document forensics will be initiated in association with the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) database. The move will allow the University of Delhi to access the class 12th results of the students. This comes in the back of raising concerns around the fraudulent cases in the recent past. Last year, the DUSU President Ankiv Baisoya was accused of <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/delhi-news/delhi-university-files-police-complaint-in-ankiv-baisoya-fake-degree-case-1950085">submitting fake documents</a> to the university, which led to the cancellation of his admission. Stressing on the need to have a policy in place for analysing applicants’ documents, a university official reportedly raised concerns over uniformity among the students across the varsity colleges. “Till now, different colleges had different identity cards and there was no uniformity. From this year, the identity cards will look similar but have the name of the college stamped on it. It was also found that some colleges were issuing identity cards after six months of a student getting admission, so it was felt that smart ID cards needs to be introduced,” <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/education-2/du-admission-2019-varsity-directs-colleges-to-carry-out-forensic-examination-of-documents-furnished-by-students/1591648/">PTI reported.</a> The verification and admission process While almost <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/education/news/du-directs-colleges-to-carry-out-forensic-examination-of-documents-furnished-by-students/articleshow/69549289.cms">80% of the applicants</a> come from CBSE, the varsity will have to conduct a separate examination of the remaining 20% of potential students. The students applying for admission will reportedly have to register in the university portal, following which they have to confirm their affiliation with CBSE. Given that, the filtered category will then undergo forensic evaluation of documents. As a standardised mechanism, the Delhi University admissions will access the students on a 70:30 ratio — for theory and practical exams, respectively. University of Delhi, CBSE will now use ‘forensics’ to detect fake documents submitted by students

<ul><li>The <keyword id="151282" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Delhi">University of Delhi</keyword> (DU) enrolled more students than the available number of available seats for 2019. </li><li>Nearly 6,000 new seats were added this year — including 282 for the undergraduate courses. </li><li>The number of students scoring 95% and above has increased by 38.4% this year. </li><li>To accommodate the increased number of students, the colleges have allotted 80 students per teacher.</li></ul>The University of Delhi (DU) enrolled more students than the number of available seats for 2019. Many colleges under the university are admitting 20-40% more than their capacity. This is despite the fact that the university had already increased the number of seats, after implementing reservations for EWS (economically weaker sections). Recently, the Indian government announced that <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/ews-quota-in-du-mostly-vacant-due-to-high-cut-offs-1567442-2019-07-12">10% reservation</a> for the EWS category in government jobs and educational institutions. Nearly 6,000 new seats were added this year — including 282 for undergraduate courses. The university has 62,000 seats in total for undergraduate and postgraduate admissions this year. Foreign admissions are also on the rise this year. As many as 1,000 foreign students were admitted this year. Stressed infrastructure The ‘over admissions’ is not new to the university. However, increase in student admissions is unmatched compared to the previous years. For instance, Miranda House enrolled roughly 1,814 students, 714 more than the number of seats. “We opened a new academic block and have turned some board and seminar rooms into classrooms as well,” Principal Bijayalaxmi Nanda <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/education/du-admits-students-beyond-its-capacity-despite-addition-of-6000-seats/story-jWgd2sGlfo5yp8k91wCdqL.html">told</a> HT, addressing the infrastructure crunch. In fact, to accommodate them, colleges allotted 80 students per teacher. “Teachers have taken over and above their share of the workload with the increase in the number of students,” Nanda added. Zakir Hussain College witnessed 1,816 admissions against 1,580 available seats — 236 more than the designated course seats. The college is trying to accommodate students in different sections and combinations, Hindustan Times <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/education/du-admits-students-beyond-its-capacity-despite-addition-of-6000-seats/story-jWgd2sGlfo5yp8k91wCdqL.html">reported</a> citing PK Shishodia, admission official of the college. The number of students scoring 95% and above has increased by 38.4% this year, which has led to higher cut-offs in the university. According to the HT report, over 17,000 students scored 95% and above in CBSE highschool exams, which is 4,956 more than last year. Given that, the University of Delhi is considering one percent relaxation for students from government-run and rural schools. DU enrolls upto 40% more students, breaching its capacity causing infrastructure crunch

The number of students scoring 95% and above has increased by 38.4% this year, which is expected to impact the cut-off criteria of universities. This year, the National Testing Agency will conduct an entrance examination for the University of Delhi, for certain courses. While admissions to most of the undergraduate courses will take place according to their respective cut-offs.

<ul><li>The Indian government is likely to announce names of 14 more institutes that can get the ‘Insitute of Eminence status.’ </li><li>It had earlier decided to bestow with the high- value status 20 institutions but it ended up selecting only six as most of the institutions were not eligible to be considered for the Eminence status. </li><li>Some of the public institutions being considered by the government include IIT-Madras, Delhi University, <keyword id="6361218" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="jadavpur-university">Jadavpur University</keyword>, IIT-Kharagpur and Anna University. </li></ul>The Central government is all set to add as many as 14 names of educational institutes of the list of ‘Institute of Eminence’. The government is likely to announce the shortlisted names of the educational institutes as soon as the assembly polls in the state of <keyword id="6355588" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword> and <keyword id="68884" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword> in India are over. The process to shortlist the names of institutions is still in progress and the committee has still not submitted the report, said Economic Times citing EEC chairperson N Gopalaswami Among the public institutes on government’s radar include IIT-Madras, Delhi University, Jadavpur University, IIT-Kharagpur and Anna University. According to the report, the government may also shortlist KREA University and another greenfield varsity like the Jio Institute.
