Features such as Find my iPhone can be accessed even when iPhone is switched off. According to them, the useful feature comes with the potential to be exploited. iPhone’s Bluetooth chip is responsible for geolocation via the Find My network and it cannot encrypt the code it runs. Researchers from the University of Darmstadt were able to take advantage of this chip’s inability to execute malware. It allowed them to track the iPhone’s position or activate different features while it is switched off. The chip running in low power mode is not the same as iOS low power mode which allows you to save battery. It is a hardware-oriented feature known as LPM- that allows near-field communication, ultra-wideband and Bluetooth chip to work 24 hours even when a device is turned off. Researchers said, “Since LPM support is based on the iPhone’s hardware, it cannot be removed with system updates. Thus, it has a long-lasting effect on the overall iOS security model. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first who looked into undocumented LPM features introduced in iOS 15 and uncover various issues.” Further researchers added, ‘there is a huge possibility for this loophole to be exploited. Our findings have limited value in real-world scenarios because for the potential exploit, jailbroken (bypassing all securities features) iPhone will work.” iPhones compromised with spyware such as Pegasus are likely to be more prone to such infections. Later researchers said, they have informed Apple about their findings but did not get back any feedback. This is when we thought of making our findings public. Andrew Brodsky, a management professor at The University of Texas, explained that boreout is when you're experiencing little "stimulation" at work."Boreout is basically often the opposite extreme of burnout, but also can be just as problematic in terms of our work experience," Brodsky said in an interview with Insider."What people don't often think about is that being under-stimulated can also create stress and negative feelings as well."Ruth Stock-Homburg, chair of the marketing and human resources department at Technische Universität Darmstadt and an expert on boreout, explained that it is "a largely neglected phenomenon," at companies because workers may be ashamed to admit it."In contrast to boreout, burnout is something cool, because a person performs so much, which is so well appreciated in our society," Stock-Humburg said to Insider. Stock-Humburg pointed out that boreout doesn't just affect "losers" or those with low performance. Instead high performers could be prone because they can be impatient and desire exciting work. Job crafting — also known as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quiet-thriving-empowering-career-strategy-joy-work-quiet-quitting-2023-5">quiet thriving</a> — is one way to overcome this feeling of boreout and it's "the idea that we can try and craft our own jobs to fit our motivations and what we're looking for," Brodsky said. This could include mentoring other employees, finding ways to interact with people across your team, or even reframing the work in your own mind so that it's more exciting to you by asking yourself questions like: "How can I make this work more fun in my own head?" <h2>Monitoring employees leads to 'busyness theater' </h2>Some companies are keeping a closer eye on employees by using <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-bosses-use-employee-tracking-software-for-remote-workers-2023-8">technology that monitors</a> how much they're working. Such tech can include tracking keystrokes per hour or monitoring how long they're actually clocked into work. Brodsky explained that boreout is often rooted in workplace cultures where employees are measured on how much they're working rather than the outcomes of their work. In fact, 43% of employees in the US engage in so-called <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-workers-use-productivity-theater-performative-work-to-look-busy-2023-5">"productivity theater"</a> for more than 10 hours a week by doing things like attending too many meetings or sending lots of emails to appear busy, according to a Visier survey in May. "This busyness theatre can be a real source of boredom because someone's really just pretending to work and they're not actually using their mind," Brodsky said.Instead, it should be okay for employees to take a break and engage in stimulating activities from watching a video to relax or going for a 15 to 20-minute jog so "you can come back to work refreshed." Lotta Harju, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at EM Lyon Business School in France, added: "Don't assume that keeping people busy will cure boredom. It does not." She explained it's a popular misconception that boreout comes from having inadequate work — workers can still get bored at companies where work piles up. Harju pointed to factors like red tape, organizational regulations, and role conflict.Ultimately it's not just down to employees to make the work environment more stimulating for themselves. Managers also need to step up and have "open conversations," with their direct reports, Brodsky said. "Very rarely are those in power asking those beneath them 'What can I do to make your job better?' They can find ways to make the jobs objectively better so those employees perform better. Even just asking employees for their feedback makes them feel more involved in the workplace, makes it feel like their voice is more heard."

'Boreout' is the opposite of burnout – but can be just as harmful for workers

I have too many passwords. I'm juggling over 200 logins at this point just to access all my accounts and devices. And with password requirements that vary for each website, it's nearly impossible to keep everything straight.Like many people, I gave up on trying to remember all my passwords years ago and handed over that responsibility to a password manager. But offloading my memory to a password manager comes with its own set of problems as companies' sites keep layering in more security. Each login feels like a heist-style safe cracking: Unlock the password manager with its own password. Click. Copy and paste a unique, unpronounceable string of characters into the sign-in form. Click. Confirm it's me with a six-digit code sent to my email or phone. Click. And I'm in.And that's for just one account — I often have to repeat that process several times a day just to complete basic tasks. I'm not alone: The <a href="https://www.newswire.com/news/new-research-most-people-have-70-80-passwords-21103705" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average person has</a> accumulated close to 100 passwords to access everything from their email inboxes and bank accounts to streaming services and their local café's membership program.Despite their abundance, passwords aren't a foolproof way to keep people's information safe. They're notoriously easy to crack: <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=52fe9fcb1b9d7555349c65bcfc88a1d78b66335818ef516b3d69a2086289f75c&amp;postID=64761253255dba783c434cad&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fsecurity%2Fblog%2F2023%2F01%2F09%2Fmicrosoft-entra-5-identity-priorities-for-2023%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Microsoft reports</a> nearly 1,287 password attacks every second, or about 111 million daily. And Cybersecurity Ventures <a href="https://ung.edu/continuing-education/news-and-media/cybersecurity.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that 44 records are stolen from breaches every second. Given the fallibility of a string of letters, numbers, and characters, tech firms have layered a series of defenses on top of passwords since their introduction in the 1960s — from mandating the codes include both numbers and letters to adding a second authentication step, such as security questions. These added complexities have done little to ward off break-ins. Last year alone, <a href="https://www.reliaquest.com/blog/weak-credentials-are-fueling-a-new-generation-of-cyber-threats/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over 24 billion login</a> credentials were exposed, an increase of 65% compared with 2020. To solve the password problem, a coalition of some of the most influential tech firms, including Apple, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, created the FIDO Alliance, which has spent the past decade working on a login system that would kill the archaic password once and for all. The FIDO solution is almost here, and I got to try it out for a few weeks. Though we're nowhere close to an entirely password-free future, the system I tried is already a game changer. <h2>The scourge of passwords</h2>The birth of the internet posed an immediate problem for businesses hoping to operate online. How do we make sure someone is who they say they are? To solve the issue, businesses turned to what Ziming Zhao, a computer-science professor at the University at Buffalo, told me was the simplest solution: text-based logins, or passwords. A <a href="https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~fms27/papers/2012-BonneauHerOorSta-password--oakland.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> by the University of Cambridge compared two decades of proposals for alternatives to passwords, and each did worse than passwords on deployability — a measure of how easy it was for businesses to set them up. Despite their ease of use, passwords come with significant downsides: More than <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=35dd8b99674d9ce863639d18b232a8abfd2ddbc00e576b0f099b7ba83aba05b8&amp;postID=64761253255dba783c434cad&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.verizon.com%2Fbusiness%2Fresources%2Freports%2Fdbir%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">80% of data breaches</a> are the result of weak passwords. While cybersecurity experts have found ways to tighten online privacy, most of the time the responsibility to keep data safe ultimately rests on people — and people are not very reliable. Even though <a href="https://www.logmein.com/newsroom/press-release/2020/lastpass-psychology-of-passwords-report-reveals-91-of-people-know-password-reuse-is-insecure-yet-two-thirds-do-it-anyway#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most people know</a> when their credentials are insecure, only a few people bother to do anything about it. And additional security measures, such as two-factor authentication, are just Band-Aids on the problems that passwords pose. There's always a new threat around the corner, Christiaan Brand, the product manager of Google's identity and security team, told me: "We're at the point where we really need to start from scratch." The quest to kill passwords isn't new. In 2004, Bill Gates <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/privacy/gates-predicts-death-of-the-password/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">famously</a> envisioned the death of traditional passwords, and there have been several attempts to replace them. But none have been able to find an alternative — until now. FIDO Alliance's solution, referred to as "passkeys," shifts the burden of security from the user to technology. With passkeys, you don't have to worry about saving unique passcodes for each website, nor do you have to navigate a maze of security steps to log in. In FIDO's passwordless world, you are the password. All you have to do to log in anywhere is scan your face or fingerprint. "You literally cannot steal a password if the password doesn't exist," Steve Won, the chief product officer of 1Password, a premium password manager and a member of the FIDO Alliance, told me. If successful, passkeys can put to rest some of the most pressing online security concerns. Following FIDO's latest update, several major companies in the past year have rolled out support for passkeys to their devices and websites. Platform owners from Apple to Mastercard are on board, so there's a real chance they can take hold. Florentin Putz, a security researcher at the TU Darmstadt in Germany, told me that the widespread support among tech companies was what made passkeys exciting.<h2>How passkeys work</h2>To use the new passwordless login, you first need to set up a passkey on your laptop, phone, tablet, or other device. You don't need to install an extra app — Apple, Microsoft, and Google now offer passkey systems by default. When I want to create a passwordless login for one of my accounts, such as for Best Buy or Google, I visit their passkey sign-up page. The website or app scans my face or fingerprint. If my device doesn't have a biometric scanner, it asks me to enter the device's lockscreen PIN or password. (This step is a temporary solution for devices that aren't able to scan your face or fingerprint to verify you — but the goal is to remove the PIN requirement.) Once the site has verified my identity, it generates a unique pair of virtual keys. One of them remains on the website's server. The other is private and stays on my device. The next time I log in to that account, all I have to do is tap a little key icon in the login form. The site then verifies my identity with Face ID, and in seconds, I'm in. I don't have to punch in a long alphanumeric password or deal with any extra login steps, such as two-factor authentication. Behind the scenes, the website or app reads the private key I saved on my device earlier, and it unlocks the door only if it matches with the one on its server. Though it sounds complex, it all takes place in the background and happens instantly — you don't have to remember or manage a thing. It's as simple as unlocking an iPhone. It's also far safer and more private than passwords. Because your biometric information and passkeys never leave your devices, there's little chance of your logins getting compromised in a data breach. In the few weeks I spent with passkeys, I found their convenience and hands-free authentication unmatched — but the system is still far from perfect.<h2>Mass adoption is needed</h2>The biggest hang-up with passkeys is how many sites accept them. Right now, the list of websites and apps with passkey support is limited to a couple dozen companies, and I had to resort to text-based passwords for most of the services I visited frequently. But the passkey movement is spreading: More companies are joining the FIDO Alliance and adopting passkeys. Andrew Shikiar, the executive director of the coalition, said that the number of firms wanting to join the alliance "demonstrates the imperative of the password problem." He added that "momentum will significantly increase over the next 12 to 18 months."The other big challenge is connection across different kinds of devices. At the moment, when you set up a passkey with Apple or Google, they sync it only to their ecosystems. That's great if all of your devices are from one company — your Apple passkey would work across an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. But if you have an iPhone and a PC laptop, you couldn't easily transfer your passkey between those devices. To log on, you would have to visit the website you want to log onto, enter your username, and then link via Bluetooth with a nearby device that's storing your passkey. If you don't have a device with the passkey you need close by, you'll have to fall back on your traditional password. So if you lost your phone where your passkey was stored, you would need to log in to the service on your computer with a traditional password.While this process ensures a hacker can't manipulate your accounts (unless they're physically within a few meters of you), it poses a bunch of usability challenges. Bluetooth sharing, in general, is finicky. On several occasions, when I tried to send passkeys between devices, it failed. Plus, FIDO equips vendors like Apple with far too much control, allowing them to make it hard to export passkeys to non-Apple devices. <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2211.07161.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research</a> by Istanbul Technical University found that inconsistent passkey interfaces across platforms could significantly deter users from switching to them. This is also where third-party password managers such as 1Password can help. I use 1Password as my password manager, so I tried out its new passkey system, which helped solve some of the interoperability issues. Since 1Password's apps are available across all platforms, it can easily sync my passkeys no matter the device I'm on. When I switched from a Mac to a Windows PC, for example, I didn't have to fiddle around with FIDO's cumbersome option for QR code sharing to sign in to Best Buy with a passkey — 1Password's Chrome add-on automatically logged me in. While 1Password's passkey update at the time of writing was limited to computers, Won told me support for Android phones was on the way. On the other hand, iPhones are another roadblock, as Apple has refused to let third-party password managers store passkeys on its devices. Participants in a <a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2302.07777.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> that Putz, the security researcher, conducted raised another concern with the passkey system. Many users reported sharing accounts with friends and family members, complicating the use of passkeys that rely on biometric information. This may be useful for some businesses, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-password-sharing-ban-clampdown-world-2023-4">streaming platforms</a>, that are already cracking down on account sharing, but it poses a problem for customers who are trying to legitimately use a shared service. At the moment, websites that support passkeys also offer a traditional login so that when I want to share account access with someone who's, say, in another country, I can just text them the password. But if a site had only a passkey option, there would be no way to let people use my account unless the other person was in my Bluetooth range.That's by design: Firms such as Google don't want you to share a passkey because that would beat the entire premise of a passwordless future, and leave it vulnerable to phishing — a common kind of attack where hackers trick their targets by pretending to be someone they are not. "Similar to our recommendations when it comes to other forms of authentication, we advise against the sharing of passkeys, passwords, etc. — even if you think you're sharing with a trusted source," Google's Brand said. However, 1Password says it plans to allow its users to share passkeys remotely. Shikiar agreed that the movement to passkeys would be a slow migration, but he expects most of these issues to be resolved in the next three to five years as the costs of making the transition are outweighed by increased revenue from reduced data breaches and fraud. The University at Buffalo's Zhao told me that there were still vulnerabilities with passkeys. For instance, to set up a new iPhone, you still need your Apple ID passcode, or PIN — a loophole that could prove fatal as recent <a href="http://wsj.com/articles/apple-iphone-security-theft-passcode-data-privacya-basic-iphone-feature-helps-criminals-steal-your-digital-life-cbf14b1a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> have highlighted how criminals can take over a person's digital life simply by eavesdropping on their lockscreen PIN. Yet Zhao is rooting for passkeys. They "do not completely eliminate security issues," he told me, adding: "But they do raise the bar for hacking attempts, making them more difficult."In all, the ability to navigate the internet without jumping through countless security hoops is refreshing. The flaws I ran into felt like nothing more than first-generation bugs. Companies from Google to Mastercard are close to killing off passwords forever

London, Popular mobile messengers like <keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword> expose personal data via discovery services that allow users to find contacts based on phone numbers from their address book, say researchers. When installing a mobile messenger like WhatsApp, new users can instantly start texting existing contacts based on the phone numbers stored on their device. For this to happen, users must grant the app permission to access and regularly upload their address book to company servers in a process called mobile contact discovery. The study from the Technical University of Darmstadt and the University of Würzburg in Germany, shows that currently deployed contact discovery services severely threaten the privacy of billions of users. Utilizing very few resources, the researchers were able to perform practical crawling attacks on the popular messengers WhatsApp, Signal and <keyword id="1275203" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telegram">Telegram</keyword>. The results of the experiments demonstrate that malicious users or hackers can collect sensitive data on a large scale and without noteworthy restrictions by querying contact discovery services for random phone numbers. For the study, the researchers queried 10 per cent of all US mobile phone numbers for WhatsApp and 100 per cent for Signal. Thereby, they were able to gather personal (meta) data commonly stored in the messengers' user profiles, including profile pictures, nicknames, status texts and the "last online" time. The analyzed data also reveals interesting statistics about user behaviour. For example, very few users change the default privacy settings, which for most messengers are not privacy-friendly at all. The researchers found that about 50 per cent of WhatsApp users in the US have a public profile picture and 90 per cent a public "About" text. Interestingly, 40 per cent of Signal users, which can be assumed to be more privacy concerned in general, are also using WhatsApp, and every other of those Signal users has a public profile picture on WhatsApp. Tracking such data over time enables attackers to build accurate behaviour models. When the data is matched across social networks and public data sources, third parties can also build detailed profiles, for example to scam users. For Telegram, the researchers found that its contact discovery service exposes sensitive information even about owners of phone numbers who are not registered with the service. "Which information is revealed during contact discovery and can be collected via crawling attacks depends on the service provider and the privacy settings of the user," the researchers wrote. Since there are no noteworthy restrictions for signing up with messaging services, any third party can create a large number of accounts to crawl the user database of a messenger for information by requesting data for random phone numbers. "We strongly advise all users of messenger apps to revisit their privacy settings," the team said. The study is scheduled to be released in February 2021 at the 28th Annual Network and Distributed System Security Symposium (NDSS), a top conference for IT security. A Deloitte consultant wrote a cringeworthy pop song to celebrate being hired - and it's being shared round the world

A study just published by the Public Library of Science, conducted by Ethan Kross of the University of Michigan and Philippe Verduyn of Leuven University in Belgium, has shown that the more someone uses Facebook, the less satisfied he is with life.
Past investigations have found that using Facebook is associated with jealousy, social tension, isolation and depression. But these studies have all been "cross-sectional"-in other words, snapshots in time. As such, they risk confusing correlation with causation: perhaps those who spend more time on social media are more prone to negative emotions in the first place. The study conducted by Dr Kross and Dr Verduyn is the first to follow Facebook users for an extended period, to track how their emotions change.
The researchers recruited 82 Facebookers for their study. These volunteers, in their late teens or early 20s, agreed to have their Facebook activity observed for two weeks and to report, five times a day, on their state of mind and their direct social contacts (phone calls and meetings in person with other people). These reports were prompted by text messages, sent between 10am and midnight, asking them to complete a short questionnaire.
When the researchers analysed the results, they found that the more a volunteer used Facebook in the period between two questionnaires, the worse he reported feeling the next time he filled in a questionnaire. Volunteers were also asked to rate their satisfaction with life at the start and the end of the study. Those who used Facebook a lot were more likely to report a decline in satisfaction than those who visited the site infrequently.
In contrast, there was a positive association between the amount of direct social contact a volunteer had and how positive he felt. In other words, the more volunteers socialised in the real world, the more positive they reported feeling the next time they filled in the questionnaire.
A volunteer's sex had no influence on these findings; nor did the size of his (or her) social network, his stated motivation for using Facebook, his level of loneliness or depression or his self-esteem. Dr Kross and Dr Verduyn therefore conclude that, rather than enhancing well-being, Facebook undermines it.
Their study does not tease out why socialising on Facebook has a different effect from socialising in person. But an earlier investigation, conducted by social scientists at Humboldt University and Darmstadt's Technical University, both in Germany, may have found the root cause.
These researchers, who presented their findings at a conference in Leipzig in February, surveyed 584 users of Facebook aged mostly in their 20s. They found that the most common emotion aroused by using Facebook is envy. Endlessly comparing themselves with peers who have doctored their photographs, amplified their achievements and plagiarised their bons mots can leave Facebook's users more than a little green-eyed. Real-life encounters, by contrast, are more WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get).
What neither study proves is whether all this is true only for younger users of Facebook. Older ones may be more mellow, and thus less begrudging of their friends' successes, counterfeit or real.
