However, she said she's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-market-unemployment-rate-interest-rates-fed-cuts-outlook-economy-2024-9">struggled to find a job</a> in her field of study over the last four years. Additionally, she has over $250,000 in student loan debt, according to a document viewed by <keyword id="19935969" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="business-insider" source="keywords">Business Insider</keyword>. "I graduated with my doctoral degree in 2020 and can't find a job to save my life," the Virginia-based 38-year-old told Business Insider via email. She asked for partial anonymity, only using the first initial of her first name and her last name, due to privacy concerns. Since earning her doctoral degree, Rasberry has applied for various business management roles but had little success. She said she's been forced to expand her job search and explore a new career in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/travel-nurse-earning-187k-salary-degree-works-9-months-2023-4">nursing</a> to help her make ends meet. "I thought <keyword id="6355445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="education" source="Orion">education</keyword> was the road to financial freedom," she said. "But I was wrong." Rasberry is among the Americans who are having a tough time <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-looking-job-cant-get-hired-college-degress-entry-level-2024-7">finding work</a>. In part, it's because businesses across the US have significantly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-recent-college-grads-hiring-slowdown-unemployment-higher-than-population-2024-9">scaled back on hiring</a> over the past two years. Rasberry shared why she thinks her job search has been so challenging, how she made her career pivot, and her top piece of advice for people pursuing higher education. <h2>"Most organizations prefer experience over education"</h2>After receiving her doctorate degree, Rasberry's initial goal was to land an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-adjunct-professor-salary-not-enough-live-student-loan-debt-2024-6">adjunct professor</a> position. However, after speaking with people in the education field, she decided to change course. "I've learned how difficult it is to get started in the field," she said. "Essentially, after earning a doctoral degree, I would have to go back to school to take more courses to support a teaching career." She said she was told she'd specifically need more education-related credits. As a result, Rasberry said she decided to give up on teaching and focus on finding other roles in her area of study: business management. But her job search has been challenging. Rasberry said she hasn't landed many interviews, and that when she does — and gets turned down — she's had a hard time figuring out what went wrong. She said she's expanded her job search to non-managerial bookkeeping, accounting, tutoring, and human resources roles, but that she hasn't had much luck with these either. Rasberry said she thinks the biggest obstacle in her job search is her lack of work experience. While pursuing her degrees, she said she gained some entry-level work experience in banking, human resources, and bookkeeping roles. However, she thinks this experience might be insufficient in the eyes of employers. "I am over qualified for most entry-level positions but I am under qualified for management or leadership positions," she said. "Ultimately, my degree has been both a blessing and a curse." Rasberry said her top piece of advice for people who pursue higher education is to do your homework. Before she pursued her degrees, she said she wished she had spent more time evaluating her school's job placement programs, internship partnerships, and the employment rates of recent graduates across different fields. Additionally, she recommended taking time to think about the value of a college degree and the best ways to use it to land a job. "I learned most organizations prefer experience over education," she said. "Had I known that I would not have spent so many years in college." <h2>A healthcare job is helping to pay the bills during her job search</h2>In recent years, Rasberry said she's worked various part-time jobs to pay the bills. "It feels next to impossible to work a single job and earn enough money to cover essentials like rent, fuel, electricity, etc. in the state of Virginia," she said. One analysis found Virginia was the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-least-expensive-states-household-bills-hawaii-california-west-virginia-2024-6">13th-most expensive</a> state when it comes to overall cost-of-living. At the same time, she's also exploring another field: healthcare. Rasberry said that for roughly the past year, she'd been working as much as 80 hours a week as a direct care liaison. She said this involves reviewing the healthcare needs of patients and detailing the support they need. "I am new to nursing, but I find it rewarding and I like the shift flexibility," she said. Rasberry said she found a nursing role that provided free training and certification. However, she said the downside was that this certification wouldn't carry over to any other employers — limiting her opportunities in the industry. This is among the reasons she hasn't stopped applying for business-related jobs. Another reason is that she doesn't think she was paid particularly well in her direct care liaison role — she said she was earning $21.50 an hour. Despite the long hours, she said the low pay is why she didn't view it as a full-time job. "It doesn't come with full time pay," she said. Addressing a press conference, Kumar said, "Across the country, a major problem in state universities is vacancies in teaching positions. In some state universities, 50 to 80 per cent of teaching positions are vacant," urging universities to expedite the filling of these positions. He said implementation of NEP is a "journey", which cannot happen overnight, and state governments have been enthusiastically participating in implementing it. Kumar stressed that it is also essential for the universities to formulate an institutional development plan and their own roadmap for the future. With approximately 130 vice-chancellors and other academics participating, discussions at the conference focused on transforming <keyword id="19896809" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-education" source="keywords">higher education</keyword> institutions to empower students in contributing to national development. Key topics include providing holistic education, integrating skill development with degree programs, and utilising digital technology to reach students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds. "We will be discussing how the NEP is being implemented and challenges colleges and universities are facing, so that we can collectively find solutions," he said. Kumar requested the universities to open more off-campus centres to make education accessible and equitable, while stating that UGC was also laying thrust on training teachers in the higher education sector. Highlighting the need to expose students to different parts of the country, he said the Northeastern region is home to many indigenous knowledge systems, whether it be a festival celebrated based on astronomical calculation, bamboo engineering or shifting cultivation. "These are parts of Indian knowledge system and there is a need to expose students to this from different parts of the country," he said. Kumar added that UGC is also working on promoting education in own language, especially with the country having numerous native languages. On implementation of NEP in this region, Kumar said the UGC is in regular touch with state higher education councils and VCs. "We are very happy to inform that state governments are very enthusiastically participating in implementing NEP. Implementation is a journey," he added. He reiterated that achieving the target of a Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of 50 per cent by 2035 requires sustained effort and cannot be achieved overnight. Among initiatives under NEP is the provision of biannual admissions to help students who fail to enroll during July-August to take admission in January-February. Universities with required infrastructure have been requested to implement it to maximise resource utilisation, Kumar said, adding that 90 varsities have also started biannual admissions for online programmes. The UGC chairman also said stress is being laid on strengthening research ecosystem in the universities and bring more young people into it. Though directly UGC funded-research has stopped now, funds for research projects are available through other agencies, like National Research Foundation and other schemes, he added. With focus on online education, internet connectivity and electrification has also received a boost across the country, with common service centres also set up for students in remote areas to access Net, Kumar added.

Vacancies in teaching positions major problem in NEP implementation: UGC chairman

Universities and <keyword id="20257650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-education-institutions" source="keywords">higher education institutions</keyword> in India can now admit students twice a year similar to the admission process followed by universities abroad, according to the <keyword id="19932585" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-Grants-Commission" source="keywords">University Grants Commission</keyword> (UGC) Chairman Jagadeesh Kumar. The two admission cycles will be July-August and January-February from the 2024-25 academic session. "If <keyword id="21269142" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-universities" source="keywords">Indian universities</keyword> can offer admission twice a year, it will benefit many students. Such as those who missed admission to a university in the July/August session due to a delay in the announcement of board results, health issues, or personal reasons. Biannual university admissions will help students maintain motivation since they do not have to wait one full year to be admitted if they miss admission in the current cycle," UGC Chairman Kumar said on Tuesday. Currently, UGC Regulations allow the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to admit students in one academic session in a year starting in July/August. An 'Academic session' is twelve months, beginning in July/August. Indian HEIs, therefore, follow the academic session that begins in July-August and ends in May-June. UGC had decided in its 571st commission held on 25 July 2023 to permit <keyword id="22014108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="biannual-admissions" source="keywords">biannual admissions</keyword> under Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online modes in January and July during an academic year. As per the information furnished by the HEIs on the UGC DEB portal, in addition to a total of 19,73,056 students were enrolled in July 2022 and an additional 4,28,854 students joined in January 2023 in ODL and online programs. Considering the tremendous response and interest from the students in ODL and online programs in biannual admissions, in its meeting held on May 15 this year the UGC took a policy decision to allow Higher Education Institutions who offer programs in regular mode to admit students twice in a year, either in January/February or July/August from the coming academic year, the UGC chairman said. Those institutions that have the required infrastructure and teaching faculty can utilize the opportunity to admit students biannually. Offering biannual admissions is not mandatory for the HEIs; it is the flexibility that UGC provides to the HEIs who want to increase their student intake and offer new programmes in emerging areas. To be able to admit students twice a year, HEIs must make suitable amendments to their institutional regulations. UGC Chairman Kumar said, "With biannual admissions in place, Industries can also do their <keyword id="22014800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="campus-recruitment" source="keywords">campus recruitment</keyword> twice a year, improving employment opportunities for the graduates." Noting that Universities worldwide already follow a biannual admission system, he said that if Indian institutions adopt the biannual admission cycle, they can enhance their international collaborations and student exchanges. You have a teacher hunched over a board with chalk, scribbling and lecturing away to a group of students. The pupils are neatly gathered around in front of the teacher; the attentive ones typically seated at the front while the delinquents loiter around the back. Then came the COVID-19 lockdowns, forcing institutes to render their educational services online. While the title of a ‘backbencher’ might have briefly disappeared due to the recent pandemic, the concept of <keyword id="21072209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="distance-learning" source="keywords">distance learning</keyword> has only found more credence in recent times. The popularity of this new mode of education has exploded due to many reasons, such as its flexibility of class timings, accessibility for students living in remote regions, nationwide improvements in internet infrastructure, reduced social anxiety in students and more. However, it is also important to note that certain programmes that require hands-on training may not be available through open and distance learning. Should you enrol your child in an online university like IGNOU?

In the early 2000s, the business of for-profit college was booming. After the University of Phoenix's parent company, the Apollo Group, went public in 1994, others were close on its heels: Corinthian, ITT Tech, and Kaplan each had IPOs in the 1990s, netting tens of millions of dollars and setting off tremendous periods of growth.Soon, private equity firms caught wind of the opportunity. In 2003, there were just 18 for-profits owned by private equity firms; less than a decade later, that number had more than tripled, to 61. For-profit enrollments were also exploding, from a little more than 425,000 in 2000 to 1.7 million in 2012 — an increase of more than 300%. By contrast, public colleges had grown by just 31%.Increasingly the boom could be characterized as a Wall Street versus Main Street match-up. Even in the 1980s, the majority of for-profit programs were still mom-and-pop affairs: short-term certificate courses in subjects like cosmetology and truck driving. By the early years of the new millennium, students were attending Fortune 500 chain schools for full-fledged degrees in teaching, medical assisting, business, and psychology. In 2012 there were 21 publicly traded for-profit colleges, and less than a quarter of for-profit college students attended a mom-and-pop operation; the other 1.3 million went to publicly traded or private-equity-owned schools.The profits in this new world were beyond belief. One study found that the for-profit industry netted 55% profit margins between 2000 and 2012. In other words, for every dollar they took from students, 55 cents went to shareholders, with overall profits peaking in 2011 at $5 billion. Within a decade of Apollo's IPO, Phoenix's student body had grown tenfold, and thanks to students' easy federal money, the company was bringing in more than $1 billion a year.It was a win-win for just about everyone involved. The schools' profits came almost exclusively from federal grant and loan moneys. The federal government was bankrolling not only their and their investors' windfalls but also those of the financial institutions and guarantee agencies that did the lending and collecting under the Federal Family Education Loan program.But there were two groups left out of the bonanza: the public at large, whose tax dollars kept the machine running, and the students who got sacked with the bill.Then the evidence started coming in, yet again, that the for-profit corporate darlings of the '90s and aughts were no more sophisticated — certainly no more beneficial — than the shady computer schools that had preceded them. In 1970 there had been only 18,333 students enrolled at degree-granting for-profit schools, less than a quarter of a percent of the total number of college students. By 2009 there were 1.85 million — almost 10% of the total. The grift had grown a hundredfold."I had worked in the sales industry for many years," the admissions supervisor stated. "But Ashford [University] had the most aggressive sales floor I have ever seen." The supervisor's employer was putatively an accredited institution that offered a wide variety of bachelor's and advanced degrees; in reality it was effectively a money-printing operation.The school's many sordid practices were revealed in a 2017 lawsuit filed against the institution by the attorney general of California. Among them were the tales of Ashford's salespeople — aka "admissions counselors" — who made hundreds, sometimes even a thousand, cold calls a week. Still their managers berated and taunted them, forcing underperformers to stand all day, jangling keyrings with the ID cards of their fired former colleagues in their faces. Some of them cried; some had mental breakdowns; eventually most quit or were fired. Managers created "lowest performer lists" and then fired the bottom 10th of recruiters. When the salespeople did manage to land a mark, they celebrated by ringing cowbells or flapping plastic hand clappers. "The sales floor had a true boiler room atmosphere," said the supervisor, not unlike that "portrayed in the movie The Wolf of Wall Street." And if they all misled some naive fools in the process, say, a few hundred a month, well, that was just the cost of doing business. It wasn't like they were going to get fired for calling loans "grants" or promising a program would lead to high-paying jobs or guaranteeing that if things didn't work out at the school, any credits earned there would transfer elsewhere (as they almost certainly would not). One Ashford admissions counselor got 25 violations in eight months and the managers dished out only a slap on the wrist. The risk of punishment by the company's Compliance Department was low, but the reward was irresistibly high: admissions counselors got paid by the sale, and the best of them made in the six figures. Recruiters preyed on their marks' naiveté about higher education, convincing them that they couldn't receive their financial aid until well into the semester (when it would be too late to get a refund), lying about what their degrees would qualify them to do, and encouraging them to spend their federal aid funds on things like cars or expensive vacations (against federal law).Ashford University was owned by Bridgepoint Education, which was backed by Warburg Pincus, a private equity firm. And the secret to its success was a foolproof tactic that for-profit financiers had discovered for getting their business off the ground and gaining access to the all-important stream of federal aid money. The trick was to gobble up existing mom-and-pop proprietary schools — as well as small, financially struggling nonprofits — and to acquire their accreditations, assets as valuable as New York City taxi medallions.But for students, the business model was a bust — at Bridgepoint, just as at any number of for-profit giants. With only seven full-time faculty for almost 74,000 students, Bridgepoint, like many of its competitors, spent way more on recruiting than it did on instruction. And it showed: Only about a quarter of students in any given year went on to get their "diplomas" within six years (public and nonprofit schools consistently graduated about two-thirds of students in that timeframe). Those who did graduate tended to leave with a hefty amount of debt — nearly $35,000 on average. By 2017 almost 20% of alumni were unemployed, and almost half didn't do anything related to their degree.Five years after California filed suit against Ashford, a state superior court judge found that the company had engaged in widespread deception — estimating that over an 11-year period, its recruiters had spread misinformation in more than 1.2 million calls — and issued more than $22 million in penalties. (In 2024, an appeals court reduced the penalty by nearly $1 million).The beneficiaries of Bridgepoint's grift were its shareholders and managing partners. The losers were everybody else. And if theirs wasn't a particularly victimless crime, so what? Nobody cared much about students anyway. "You stop thinking of these students as people," said one recruiting manager.In 2010, Tom Harkin, chair of the Senate's education committee, began a two-year investigation into for-profit schools. Harkin's assessment of the sector was scathing. He declared for-profits expensive, exploitative, and concerned only with their own profits. "They are not focused on the success of their students," Harkin declared.A number of these schools were held by private equity firms like Goldman Sachs. In 2011, one Goldman-backed chain took in more than $350 million in Pell Grant funds and made a little more than that in profit. At a time when the federal government was refusing to help unemployed, down-on-their-luck, and defrauded borrowers, it was bailing out banks like Goldman Sachs twice over: They had already benefited from billions of dollars in Great Recession recovery funds, and now they were scooping up ill-begotten federal student aid via failing for-profit colleges. Fifteen of the schools Harkin's team investigated were publicly traded. These schools received, on average, 86% of their revenues from federal sources, right up to the line of what was legal. One of the ways they did this, Harkin found, was by recruiting veterans. In the years after World War II, legislators reinvented the GI Bill several times to reward veterans of later conflicts, like the Vietnam and Iraq wars, and to adapt to the evolving military, which had become an all-volunteer force in the 1970s. A loophole allowed them to count Defense Department moneys, including GI Bill funds, as non-federal money. In 2009, a Bloomberg News reporter uncovered a tactic used by Ashford University recruiters. They were targeting a wounded warriors unit at Camp Lejeune, signing up veterans with brain injuries who couldn't remember which classes they were taking. Each veteran was a lucrative prospect, allowing schools to gobble up yet more federal funds.And gobble they did. By 2010, Harkin found, for-profits were taking in a third of all GI Bill education funds. But even more shocking, federal money flowing to for-profit schools accounted for 25% of all federal student aid and 47% of eventual loan defaults. This, in spite of the fact that the schools enrolled little more than 10% of all American college students.So what happened to all the extra money for-profits took in? Harkin's investigation found that for-profits spent nearly a quarter of all revenues on marketing and recruiting and often paid their executives multimillion-dollar salaries, far above the average rates for public- or nonprofit-university presidents. In 2015, a separate study found that job applicants got just as many call-backs by listing no educational experience on their résumés as they did by listing for-profit credentials.When for-profit grads did find employment, Cellini found, they earned about a 10th less than the public program certificate holders. In fact, these for-profit students were actually worse off than if they hadn't gone to school at all. When taking into account their debt loads, for-profit graduates were projected to lose about $1,200 on their educational "investments" over the course of their lifetimes.In short, a simple equation summed up the for-profit ethos at this time: charge as much as federal student aid will supply, and cut costs to the bone. Everything in the middle could be harvested as profit. Wall Street tried getting into higher education. Disaster ensued. 

In an ever-evolving world driven by technology, <keyword id="19904566" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence" source="keywords">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI) has been making waves in nearly every sector. Workers are constantly threatened by the prospect of “AI taking their jobs”. But what if we told you that the tool could just as easily dominate our classrooms as well? William Hersh, M.D., a seasoned professor at Oregon Health &amp; Science University (OHSU), was particularly intrigued by AI's growing influence in his field. As a medical informatics educator, he sought to explore just how well <keyword id="19896272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="generative-AI" source="keywords">generative AI</keyword> could compete with his human students. The results? Surprising, to say the least. <h2>An experiment in education</h2>Hersh’s curiosity led him to conduct an experiment where he pitted six large-language <keyword id="19924380" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-models" source="keywords">AI models</keyword> — including ChatGPT — against students enrolled in his introductory course on biomedical and health informatics. The goal was to see how AI would perform when tasked with the same assessments as his students. The <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41746-024-01251-0">findings</a>, published in npj <keyword id="20320357" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-medicine" source="keywords">Digital Medicine</keyword>, showed that AI models outperformed up to 75% of the class. "This does raise concern about cheating, but there is a larger issue here," Hersh commented. "How do we know that our students are actually learning and mastering the knowledge and skills they need for their future professional work?" <h2>The role of <keyword id="23201889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-in-knowledge-based-learning" source="Orion">AI in knowledge-based learning</keyword></h2>The study analysed the performance of 139 students who took the course in 2023, with AI models tackling multiple-choice questions and short-answer prompts. The AI models scored impressively, landing in the top 50th to 75th percentile. According to Hersh, these results raise essential questions about the future of student assessment, particularly in knowledge-heavy subjects like biomedical informatics. Although the AI excelled in this particular course, Hersh was quick to point out that generative models might not fare as well in more hands-on or participatory academic settings, where critical thinking and complex skills development are vital. For Hersh, this balance between mastering knowledge and applying it in real-world scenarios is at the heart of <keyword id="19918893" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medical-education" source="keywords">medical education</keyword>. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113364057" title="AI is entering classrooms in Italy, new learning tools to be tested in 15 classrooms across four regions" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> <h2>A new era for medical students</h2>The AI's performance has stirred up an age-old debate in the academic community: how much information should students be expected to memorise versus being able to access through technological tools? Hersh recalls a time in medical school when one of his attending physicians insisted that every doctor should carry all medical knowledge "in their head." Even back then, Hersh saw the limitations of such an approach. "The knowledge base of medicine has long surpassed the capacity of the human brain to memorise it all," he noted, emphasising the importance of making smart use of available technology. <h2>Striking the right balance </h2>Despite the impressive capabilities of AI, Hersh remains confident that medicine — and most academic disciplines — will always require a "human touch." Critical decision-making, nuanced judgement calls, and compassionate patient care cannot be fully replaced by machines. "There are a lot of things that healthcare professionals do that are pretty straightforward, but there are those instances where it gets more complicated and you have to make judgement calls," Hersh said. "That's when it helps to have that broader perspective." As fall classes approach, Hersh isn’t worried about AI encouraging cheating. His solution? Continuously updating the curriculum and ensuring that assessments go beyond what AI can quickly retrieve. "In any scientific field, there are new advancements all the time," he remarked. "Large-language models aren’t necessarily up to date on all of it." Hersh’s experiment underscores the broader implications of <keyword id="8581687" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-in-education" source="Orion">AI in education</keyword>. While AI has the potential to assist in areas such as medical knowledge recall, it cannot — and should not — replace the critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and human interaction that healthcare professionals need to succeed. According to the "Industry 5.0 and <keyword id="19899640" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="AI" source="keywords">AI</keyword> Report," compiled by <keyword id="22094332" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BML-Munjal-University" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BML Munjal University" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="BML Munjal University">BML Munjal University</keyword>, 44% of organizations have experienced a significant boost in productivity through <keyword id="20230984" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-integration" source="keywords">AI integration</keyword>. Additionally, 21% reported that AI can play a pivotal role in driving innovation, enabling the development of new products, services, and business models, particularly in sectors like finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and marketing. "Approximately 33% of organizations focus on product development, while 29% leverage AI for customer service through chatbots and robotic process automation (RPA). Marketing teams, representing 19% of businesses, utilize AI for trend analysis, while 13% apply AI to improve supply chain management. Financial planning, though less prominent (6%), benefits from AI's efficiency-boosting capabilities," the report added. Based on responses from 1,000 professionals and in-depth interviews with 50 industry experts, the report highlighted a significant shift in how businesses are integrating AI into their strategies. While AI has delivered numerous benefits, the report also highlights some key challenges. "Around 34% of organizations face a critical shortage of AI-trained personnel, which hinders their ability to fully leverage AI's potential. This skills gap highlights the need for better AI education and continuous learning programs. In fact, 31 %of organizations have started mentorship initiatives to help develop talent," the report said. AI's impact varies by sector; in mergers and acquisitions, 28% have seen benefits in personalized campaigns, but data privacy remains a hurdle for 22%. IT and augmented reality sectors report enhanced productivity (44%), but struggle with talent shortages. "In finance, AI improves risk management, though 18% face regulatory challenges. Healthcare has seen advancements in diagnostics, yet ethical concerns remain significant for 18% of professionals. In manufacturing, 23% recognize process optimization benefits from AI, but 21% struggle with legacy system integration," it said. Qualitative interviews with industry professionals reveal that transparency in AI decision-making is crucial, with 21% expressing concerns about the "black box" problem. "There are also ethical concerns, with 20% of respondents mentioning algorithmic bias and 22% expressing worries about data privacy. These issues show the need for responsible <keyword id="20355187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-governance" source="keywords">AI governance</keyword>, prompting 38.3% of organizations to adopt <keyword id="21198326" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ethical-AI" source="keywords">ethical AI</keyword> guidelines to ensure transparency," it said. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked as the best university in the country followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. IIT Madras ranked best higher educational institution in India

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I went to Columbia for grad school and had to take out a loan to afford the high tuition.</li><li>The classes, professors, and student life alone weren't worth the amount of debt I now have.</li></ul>Growing up in Mexico allowed me to live the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-11-nations-of-the-united-states-2015-7">American culture</a> in a unique way: I could choose exactly which facets to experience. For me, there was nothing quite like attending a US college.I did some research and discovered the prestigious group of universities known as the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/daughters-take-student-loans-ivy-league-schools-2024-9">Ivy League schools</a> — some of the oldest and most renowned educational institutions around the globe. I was sold. However, I also discovered the high cost of attending one of these schools. Pursuing an undergraduate degree was not financially feasible.So, I completed my undergraduate studies in Mexico and postponed my US college experience for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/grad-student-waiting-masters-better-student-2024-9">graduate program</a>. When the time came, I applied to a master's program at Columbia University, was admitted, and took out a substantial loan (and a big leap of faith).Now that it's over, I can't help but wonder: Was the price worth it? Yes, but not for the reasons you might think.<h2 id="147c93bb-3e5a-4daf-b06a-17e0d9fcb195">The academic aspect: courses and professors</h2>One of the reasons people choose to attend an Ivy League institution is their academic excellence. Since I received the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-acceptance-wait-anxiety-2024-1">acceptance letter</a>, the university has not missed an opportunity to inform me about its distinguished faculty and cutting-edge classes. And they were not wrong.I was surprised by the professors' extensive resumes and the variety of teaching methods in my classes, but I wasn't incredibly impressed. Having completed my undergrad in Mexico, my point of comparison allowed me to understand that my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-average-salaries-of-ivy-league-university-professors-2019-8">Ivy League professors</a> didn't fully justify paying three times as much.It truly depends on your specialization, but we can't pretend that in a globalized world, the best classes are exclusively found at a dozen universities in the US. I'm not saying there isn't any added value, but I'm certain that a professor from a reputable university around the world can provide a similar <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employers-dropping-degree-requirements-slow-to-hire-for-skills-2024-10">educational experience</a>.<h2 id="1812ebca-de8b-4d5d-ba68-0449b8f11ca7">The extra-curricular aspect: campus and activities</h2>An important part of the Ivy League experience is what's offered outside the classroom. In fact, the term "Ivy League" originates from the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-football-recruiting-athletes-locker-rooms-training-facilities-texas-florida-2024-2">college football</a> division.For this particular aspect, you might think my opinion is biased because I did my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-getting-masters-degree-in-europe-cheaper-better-belgium-2024-9">master's degree</a> in 2021 during the pandemic — and you wouldn't be entirely wrong. We missed out on many activities, conferences, and trips because of the pandemic.But this made me think afterward: Were there any events or things the university could have organized to make this experience worth the thousands of dollars paid? The answer was no. There wasn't a match, concert, or symposium that could justify the debt I was in.If the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yale-university-clubs-organizations-competitive-hard-participate-2024-1">academic and extracurricular</a> aspects didn't make it for me, what did?<h2 id="051f5abb-4b5a-417c-8403-503c47547866">The professional aspect: job hunting, impression and networking</h2>The value of the Ivy League degree came from what it could do for me outside the university. And no, I'm not talking about bragging rights; we all have that Harvard friend whose personality only revolves around their <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-donations-billionaires-donations-endowments-2024-10">Harvard years</a>. I'm talking about everything that comes after you study there.Did you know there are exclusive <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/metaverse-job-fair-avatar-creepy-careers-2022-2">job fairs</a> for Ivy League schools? Did you know most prestigious banks, firms and companies use universities' names to filter resumes? I went to one of these job fairs, secured a job in London, and when I got there, I found out all of my colleagues across the board held an Ivy League degree. Yes, of course, there are exceptions, but that's all they are — exceptions.Not only that, people see you differently. Once, I was on a date, and their interest suddenly (and drastically) changed when they found out about my Ivy League degree.The reasons mentioned above might come with an element of luck. But there is one thing that is guaranteed in your journey through an Ivy League degree: networking. You can be an introvert or an extrovert, but you will meet people. From all kinds of backgrounds, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-systemic-racism-in-charts-graphs-data-2020-6">races, and ethnicities</a>.
